Christian non-resistance.Adin Ballou - 1846 - Providence, R.I.: Blackstone Editions. Edited by Lynn Gordon Hughes.
Christian Non-Resistance (1846) is the major philosophical statement by the nineteenth-century theorist of nonviolence, Adin Ballou. Ballou argued that the Biblical injunction "resist not evil" should be understood as "resist not personal injury with personal injury." While prohibiting the injury of any person under any provocation whatsoever, Ballou taught that Christians have a duty to resist, oppose, or prevent evil by all uninjurious means, including the use of "uninjurious benevolent force." He believed that this would allow a community to (...)

A concise guide to mahshava: an overview of Jewish philosophy.Adin Steinsaltz - 2020 - Jerusalem: Koren Publishers, Steinsaltz Center.
The Erez Series, A Concise Guide to Mahshava contains an anthology of passages that address profound questions that have challenged the greatest minds throughout Jewish history. We focus not only on the content of the passages and descriptions of events, but on responses to questions such as: Why? What is the meaning of this? Much of the material brought here relates to the content of the other books in this series, but this volume also contains a selection of various problems (...)

  12. Happy Lives and the Highest Good: An Essay on Aristotle's "Nicomachean Ethics".Gabriel Richardson Lear - 2005 - Princeton University Press.
Gabriel Richardson Lear presents a bold new approach to one of the enduring debates about Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics: the controversy about whether it coherently argues that the best life for humans is one devoted to a single activity, namely philosophical contemplation. Many scholars oppose this reading because the bulk of the Ethics is devoted to various moral virtues--courage and generosity, for example--that are not in any obvious way either manifestations of philosophical contemplation or subordinated to it. They argue that Aristotle (...)
  13. Aristotle: The Desire to Understand.Jonathan Lear - 1988 - New York: Cambridge University Press.
This is a 1988 philosophical introduction to Aristotle, and Professor Lear starts where Aristotle himself starts. The first sentence of the Metaphysics states that all human beings by their nature desire to know. But what is it for us to be animated by this desire in this world? What is it for a creature to have a nature; what is our human nature; what must the world be like to be intelligible; and what must we be like to understand it (...)

Radikale Hoffnung: Ethik im Angesicht kultureller Zerstörung.Jonathan Lear - 2020 - Berlin: Suhrkamp. Translated by Jens Pier.

Aristotle and Logical Theory.Jonathan Lear - 1980 - Cambridge, England: Cambridge University Press.
Aristotle was the first and one of the greatest logicians. He not only devised the first system of formal logic, but also raised many fundamental problems in the philosophy of logic. In this book, Dr Lear shows how Aristotle's discussion of logical consequence, validity and proof can contribute to contemporary debates in the philosophy of logic. No background knowledge of Aristotle is assumed.

  27. Technique and final cause in psychoanalysis: Four ways of looking at one moment.Jonathan Lear - unknown
This paper argues that if one considers just a single clinical moment there may be no principled way to choose among different approaches to psychoanalytic technique. One must in addition take into account what Aristotle called the final cause of psychoanalysis, which this paper argues is freedom. However, freedom is itself an open-ended concept with many aspects that need to be explored and developed from a psychoanalytic perspective. This paper considers one analytic moment from the perspectives of the techniques of (...)

Love and its place in nature: a philosophical interpretation of Freudian psychoanalysis.Jonathan Lear - 1990 - New Haven, CT: Yale University Press.

In this fully updated second edition, Jonathan Lear clearly introduces and assesses all of Freud's thought, focusing on those areas of philosophy on which Freud is acknowledged to have had a lasting impact. These include the philosophy of mind, free will and determinism, rationality, the nature of the self and subjectivity, and ethics and religion. He also considers some of the deeper issues and problems Freud engaged with, brilliantly illustrating their philosophical significance: human sexuality, the unconscious, dreams, and the theory (...)

Wisdom Won From Illness: Essays in Philosophy and Psychoanalysis.Jonathan Lear - 2017 - Cambridge, Massachusetts: Harvard University Press.
What is the appropriate relation of human reason to the human psyche--indeed, to human life--taken as a whole? The essays in this volume range over literature and ethics, psychoanalysis, social theory, and ancient Greek philosophy. But, from different angles, they all address this question. Wisdom Won from Illness probes deep into the heart of psychoanalysis to understand how it illuminates the human condition. At the same time it goes back to the origins of psychological thinking in ancient Greece--and the effort (...)

Whether aristotle wrote a work on mathematics as he did on physics is not known, and sources differ. this book attempts to present the main features of aristotle's philosophy of mathematics. methodologically, the presentation is based on aristotle's "posterior analytics", which discusses the nature of scientific knowledge and procedure. concerning aristotle's views on mathematics in particular, they are presented with the support of numerous references to his extant works. his criticism of his predecessors is added at the end.
