The open and clopen Ramsey theorems in the Weihrauch lattice.Alberto Marcone & Manlio Valenti - 2021 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 86 (1):316-351.
We investigate the uniform computational content of the open and clopen Ramsey theorems in the Weihrauch lattice. While they are known to be equivalent to $\mathrm {ATR_0}$ from the point of view of reverse mathematics, there is not a canonical way to phrase them as multivalued functions. We identify eight different multivalued functions and study their degree from the point of view of Weihrauch, strong Weihrauch, and arithmetic Weihrauch reducibility. In particular one of our functions turns out to be strictly (...)

Conscientious commitment, professional obligations and abortion provision after the reversal of Roe v Wade.Alberto Giubilini, Udo Schuklenk, Francesca Minerva & Julian Savulescu - 2024 - Journal of Medical Ethics 50 (5):351-358.
We argue that, in certain circumstances, doctors might beprofessionallyjustified to provide abortions even in those jurisdictions where abortion is illegal. That it is at least professionally permissible does not mean that they have an all-things-considered ethical justification or obligation to provide illegal abortions or that professional obligations or professional permissibility trump legal obligations. It rather means that professional organisations should respect and indeed protect doctors’ positive claims of conscience to provide abortions if they plausibly track what is in the best (...)

  6. When probabilistic support is inductive.Alberto Mura - 1990 - Philosophy of Science 57 (2):278-289.
This note makes a contribution to the issue raised in a paper by Popper and Miller (1983) in which it was claimed that probabilistic support is purely deductive. Developing R. C. Jeffrey's remarks, a new general approach to the crucial concept of "going beyond" is here proposed. By means of it a quantitative measure of the inductive component of a probabilistic inference is reached. This proposal leads to vindicating the view that typical predictive probabilistic inferences by enumeration and analogy are (...)

Reassessing the role of informed decision-making in cardiac xenotransplantation.Alberto Aparicio, Peyton Swanson & Daniel Aillaud De Uriarte - forthcoming - Journal of Medical Ethics.
With the pressing shortage of human organs and recent breakthroughs in gene editing, xenotransplantation—using animal organs, tissues or cells for human transplants—offers new hope for patients on wait lists. The use of genome editing technologies to produce xenotransplants from pigs with reduced immunogenicity has recently brought renewed attention to the field while also raising a host of ethical dilemmas. These concerns include animal welfare, the risks of zoonotic diseases, the moral implications of crossing species boundaries and the potential inequities in (...)

The Platonist view in philosophy of linguistics states that grammars are theories of abstract objects. In this paper I will focus on the Platonist view in philosophy of linguistics as stated in Katz's "An Outline of Platonist Grammar" (1984) and Soames' "Linguistics and Psychology" (1984) and "Semantics and Psychology" (1985). I will begin explaining which are the core ideas of the Platonist view in philosophy of linguistics. Then, I will comment on the argument offered by Katz's in order to argue (...)

‘Racism without racists’: A clarification and refutation of the hypothesis.Alberto G. Urquidez - forthcoming - Philosophical Quarterly.
Sally Haslanger's notion of ‘pure structural oppression’ is the idea of an institution or structure that is unjust independent of any and all agential wrongdoing, and for which no agent is liable. Haslanger argues that pure structural oppression is possible, but she does not defend it as a viable phenomenon in the actual world. The rough equivalent of ‘pure structural oppression’ in the racial domain is the ‘racism without racists hypothesis’. This is the claim that institutional racism without racist agents (...)

Meanings of Basqueness: An Account from Brandomian Inferentialism on Basque Identity and Its Evolution.Alberto Morán Roa - forthcoming - Social Epistemology.
In this paper, I will analyze how the conceptualization of the term ‘Basqueness’, and the meaning of ‘being Basque’, have been instrumental in determining the way in which citizens of the Basque Autonomous Community (BAC) have chosen to identify themselves. What it means to be Basque has experienced a significant evolution from its ethnic and linguistic origins to being a matter of feeling and doing; however, the way Basque citizens felt about Basqueness, and what actions participated in Basqueness, was substantially (...)

Causal Language in Context in advance.Alberto Tassoni - forthcoming - International Philosophical Quarterly.
What, if anything, does singular causal language teach us about causation? I start with some observations about causal language and then explore some lessons about causation. This note has two major parts. First, I rehearse and reinforce some arguments that purport to show that the context-sensitivity of causal language is semantic. Second, I discuss how this could inform the metaphysics of causation, ultimately arguing that it leads to a novel form of causal pluralism. The main claim is conditional: if the (...)

Regiomontanus's Paduan lecture of 1464, the Byzantine intellectual heritage and the Graeco-Arabic roots of astronomical studies in early modern Italy.Alberto Bardi - forthcoming - British Journal for the History of Science:1-16.
The inaugural lecture, or oration, delivered by Regiomontanus at the University of Padua in 1464 is deemed a document of remarkable significance in the history of science. Although it has attracted much scholarly attention, few efforts have been directed towards identifying the traces of Byzantine influence it might carry; that is to say, the extent to which Regiomontanus might have been influenced by the views of his patron, Bessarion. This paper responds to the need for such a study, arriving at (...)

Some remarks on the history of Ricci’s absolute differential calculus.Alberto Cogliati - 2024 - Archive for History of Exact Sciences 78 (6):717-761.
The article offers a general account of the genesis of the absolute differential calculus (ADC), paying special attention to its links with the history of differential geometry. In relatively recent times, several historians have described the development of the ADC as a direct outgrowth either of the theory of algebraic and differential invariants or as a product of analytical investigations, thus minimizing the role of Riemann’s geometry in the process leading to its discovery. Our principal aim consists in challenging this (...)

Negativity and Zwischen: An Account of Byung-Chul Han’s Aesthetics.Alberto Morán Roa - 2024 - Journal of Aesthetics and Phenomenology 11 (1):119-134.
Byung-Chul Han’s reflections on aesthetics are heavily influenced by Martin Heidegger’s hermeneutic reading of phenomenology and the theses of his Doktormutter, Utte Guzzoni, on the mutual determination of opposites and the intermediate space (Zwischen) that serves as a background for their constitution. Once these foundations have been explored, it can be seen how Hanian approaches to the aesthetic dimension of phenomena are connected with his criticisms of the philosophical development of the West and the problems of its contemporary facet. Therefore, (...)

Hegel and the present of art's past character.Alberto L. Siani - 2023 - New York, NY: Routledge/Taylor & Francis Group.
This book reclaims Hegel's notion of the "end of art"-or, more precisely, of "art's past character"-not just as a piece of the history of philosophy but as a living critical and interpretive methodology. It addresses the presence of the past character of art both in Hegel and contemporary philosophy and aesthetics. The book's innovative contribution lies in unifying the Hegelian thesis with discussions of contemporary art and philosophy. The author not only offers a Hegelian exegesis but applies the idea of (...)

De Finetti on the Insurance of Risks and Uncertainties.Alberto Feduzi, Jochen Runde & Carlo Zappia - 2012 - British Journal for the Philosophy of Science 63 (2):329-356.
In the insurance literature, it is often argued that private markets can provide insurance against ‘risks’ but not against ‘uncertainties’ in the sense of Knight ([1921]) or Keynes ([1921]). This claim is at odds with the standard economic model of risk exchange which, in assuming that decision-makers are always guided by point-valued subjective probabilities, predicts that all uncertainties can, in theory, be insured. Supporters of the standard model argue that the insuring of highly idiosyncratic risks by Lloyd's of London proves (...)

Reflection on “the contemporary crisis” must take into account that, beyond financial problems in global capitalist administration, the crisis works over a fall of the human in relation to which every postulation of an affirmative biopolitics seems insufficient. The biopolitical condition responds to a process of nomic self-consecration of technical structures that dramatically increase the capacity to oppress without doing much for the capacity to tolerate it. This essay engages with Heidegger, Keynes, Weber and Schmitt, as thinkers of the “crisis,” (...)

The paper provides an analysis of Giuseppe Vitali’s contributions to differential geometry over the period 1923–1932. In particular, Vitali’s ambitious project of elaborating a generalized differential calculus regarded as an extension of Ricci-Curbastro tensor calculus is discussed in some detail. Special attention is paid to describing the origin of Vitali’s calculus within the context of Ernesto Pascal’s theory of forms and to providing an analysis of the process leading to a fully general notion of covariant derivative. Finally, the reception of (...)
