Enrico Berti has had a profound influence on the birth and development of Italian studies in ancient philosophy. His sizable work has shaped a great part of Italian studies on Aristotle and other ancient philosophers. To celebrate him and express their gratitude for his work, some of his disciples, under the impulse of the late Franco Volpi, have brought together a volume in his honour, requesting the participation of some foreign scholars particularly close to him. The volume comprises essays (...) by Pierre Aubenque, Jonathan Barnes, Terence H. Irwin, Tomás Calvo-Martínez, Jaap Mansfeld, Pierre Pellegrin, Gerhard Seel and Alejandro G. Vigo. I discuss Enrico Berti “Saggezza o filosofia pratica?” published in the current issue of “Ethics & Politics”. I argue that Kant’s normative ethics was in fact a kind of virtue ethics and most of the opposition between Aristotelianism and Kantian ethics in the last three decades has been basically an exercise in cross-purpose.

Ce recueil comprend une vingtaine de mes articles, pour la plupart deja publie par ailleurs. Plusieurs d'entre eux ont paru en francais, la langue que je prefere pour la communication internationale; mais il n'y a pas tout ce que j' ai ecrit ou publie dans cette langue: je n'ai retenu que les etudes concernant la dialectique, la physique et la metaphysique d'Aristote, et parmi celles-ci seulement celles qui me paraissent les plus significatives. J'y ai ajoute cinq traductions d'articles publies en (...) italien ou en anglais et qui me semblaient constituer un complement utile aux theses developpees dans les autres. Le but de cette publication est avant tout de mettre a la disposition d'un public plus large les resultats de mes etudes sur ces differents themes, en lui permettant d'en avoir une vision pour ainsi dire synoptique - au risque de comporter des repetitions, dont je tiens a m'excuser ici. Comme il s'agit d'ecrits s'etendant sur une trentaine d'annees - le plus ancien remonte a 1979, mais il avait ete presente au Symposium Aristotelicum de 1972 -, il est inevitable que, sur plusieurs points, il y ait eu des changements d'opinion. Mais ceux-ci ne sont pas vraiment significatifs et il s'agit dans la plupart des cas de nuances, de differences d'accent ou encore de mises au point. Si j'ai choisi d'inclure ainsi des opinions que je ne soutiens plus de la meme maniere aujourd'hui, c'est dans une intention dialectique, au sens aristotelicien du terme, c'est-a-dire pour fournir tous les arguments en faveur d'une these aussi bien que tous ceux qui lui sont opposes, de maniere a developper les apories dans les deux directions, ce qui, pour Aristote, constitue la meilleure maniere de distinguer le vrai du faux. After a short summary of the interpretation of Thomas Aquinas’ conception of being given by E. Gilson, according which the actus essendi is existence, the article sets out the criticisms addressed to this conception by P.T. Geach and A. Kenny, showing that they converge with the criticism developed by the author himself in an article of 1979 on Aristotle. In the author’s view, the best reply to this criticism given by the Thomists is the reply of S.L. Brocks, who has (...) shown that the actus essendi is the perfect way of being which belongs only to God. The author shows that this conception is confirmed by some passages of Thomas’ De ente et essentia. (shrink)

The so called “revival of practical philosophy”, started in 1960 by H.G. Gadamer with his Wahrheit und Methode e metodo”, has often provoked a confusion between the authentic prac-tical philosophy of Aristotle and the virtue he calls phronêsis or wisdom. Actually, they repre-sent two forms of knowledge very different. Wisdom is the virtue of practical reason which consists in the ability of correctly deliberate, that is in the ability of individuating the action more suitable for realizing a good end. On (...) the contrary, practical philosophy is a science, that is an habit of theoretical reason, even if it is a practical science, which has as its end in the good action and has a degree of rigour inferior to that of theoretical sciences. Practical philosophy is the science of the supreme good for man, that is happiness – the full flourishing of all human capabilities-, which is determined by means of a dialectical discussion with the thesis of the various philosophers. En su libro Verdad y Método H.G. Gadamer fomentó el renacimiento de la filosofía práctica de Aristóteles. Sin embargo, de acuerdo a su interpretación, la filosofía práctica tiende a ser identificada con la phrónesis, i.e. con la sabiduría práctica. Para Aristóteles, la filosofía práctica es un conocimiento científico, si bien es menos rigurosa que la filosofía teórica, y hace uso de demostraciones, aunque sus demostraciones no son siempre válidas, sino sólo en la mayoría de los casos. Además, la filosofía práctica (...) emplea un método dialéctico que consiste en la discusión de diferentes opciones a la luz de las premisas más aceptadas. La phrónesis, por el contrario, es una virtud, i.e. una excelencia de la razón, que consiste en la capacidad de llevar a cabo una deliberación correcta, i.e. escoger los medios que resulten más aptos para alcanzar un fin adecuado. Consecuentemente, para Aristóteles el phrónimos no necesita ser filósofo pero, en cambio, el filósofo que desea alcanzar la sophía, debe ser un phrónimos. (shrink)

Translating in his Arati Phaenomena the Aratean myth of Orion and the scorpion, Germanicus introduces a series of allusions to the parallel episode in the proem of Nicander’s Theriaka, which was modelled in turn on the passage of Aratus’ Phaenomena. In so doing, Germanicus emphasizes the intertextual connection between the two hellenistic poems, and incorporates both of them in his Aratean translation. At the same time, some of these Nicandrean borrowings are reformulated through the use of Virgilian vocabulary. The Orion (...) episode can therefore be seen as a sample of Germanicus’ poetical technique and allusive art, highlighting the various components of his refined literary culture. (shrink)

Based on seventeenth- and eighteenth-century accounts written by and for slavers, this article investigates the provisioning of the French Middle Passage. As the transatlantic trade in African captives developed, foodstuffs for the feeding of both Europeans and Africans figured prominently in a specifically Atlantic system of commodity exchanges. The trade in foodstuffs depended most heavily on African subsistence systems encountered along the coasts of West Africa, but a surprising quantity of French and other European foodstuffs were embarked specifically for the (...) Middle Passage, revealing, I argue, the precariousness of conditions of trade and of European slaving factories. As a key element of Atlantic political economy, the study of food and its transatlantic provisioning networks sheds light not only on the governance and regulation of the networks themselves, but also on the ability of early modern states to establish and maintain metropolitan control, on the growth of local, colonial forms of autonomy and authority, and on the complex systems of ‘national’ and colonial interdependence that lay behind the expansion of every Atlantic colony. I conclude that this study of provisioning demonstrates that however fractured and differentiated, imperial power was an irrefutable aspect of colonial continuity. (shrink)

A literatura crítica sobre Aristóteles ainda discute se a forma é universal ou individual. A doutrina do livro Lambda da Metafísica afirma que as causas dos indivíduos são individuais, mas é no De generatione animalium que essa doutrina é justificada: o sêmen paterno transmite ao mênstruo uma série de movimentos que determinam a alma do feto e o seu desenvolvimento corporal. Portanto, o pai é causa motora do filho e produz sua alma, que pode ser individual.
