Ancient Chinese history holds a quality which has syncretized traditional thought with its cultural wealth unified of mystical and mythological figures in the background. Such that classical documents, which had begun to be written before Common Era, has directly influenced the political regime, education system and status of society in China. One of the most prominent features of these works is to propound collective knowledge about perception of cosmology, attitudes to earthiness, community standards, policy and morality. Among Five Classics works (...) of these masterpieces of Chinese philosophy, Book of Changes which stands closest to metaphysical narrative, mainly consists of the texts about prophecy. While this piece of work had been referred as a divination guide in Western Zhou Dynasty (1046-771 BC), it turned into a cosmological text that included a range of philosophical commentary during Warring States Period (475-221 BC). The mainstay of this remarkable change is the direct correlation of all the concepts and terms that characterize the worldly beyond along with the relevant text, especially yin-yang dualism, which symbolizes an extraordinary harmony in early Chinese thought. Traditional idea suggests reciprocity in which heaven, earth and man are interconnected to maintain natural order. However, the superiority attributed to human beings also brings compulsive responsibilities to idealize a compatible society. This paper aims to discuss influences of cosmological and anthropological items on human behaviors explained in prescriptive perspective. (shrink)

The Zhouyi is the first of the Chinese classics and has, since medieval times, fascinated scholars from different parts of the world, who have produced numerous studies and expressed a dazzling array of views on its nature. It is argued that the Zhouyi has retained its exalted status and enduring appeal largely because it is an open book amenable to all kinds of appropriations and manipulations, and its openness comes from its being a semiotic system whose principle of composition (...) warrants unlimited interpretations. Through a semiotic-cum-philosophical inquiry, it is shown that the Zhouyi is first and foremost a system of representation, and because of its unique structure and principle of signification it forms an open hermeneutic space with infinite possibilities of interpretation. The present paper gives a systematic account of the concept of virtue represented by de 德 in the “Book of Changes.” It starts with a short summary of the impact of this concept on later Song dynasty philosophy. In this traditional view, “virtue” is considered to be a natural entity which contains intrinsic dynamics. This naturalistic view of morality is later contrasted with earlier notions of de or “virtue” in the canonized edition of the “Changes.” The paper (...) first examines its meaning in the oracle sayings and then moves on to the “Traditions of the Changes,” Yizhuan 易傳. The West's foremost translator of the I Ching, Richard Wilhelm thought deeply about how contemporary readers could benefit from this ancient work and its perennially valid insights into change and chance. For him and for his son, Hellmut Wilhelm, the Book of Changes represented not just a mysterious book of oracles or a notable source of the Taoist and Confucian philosophies. 이 글은 미학에 관한 논문이다. 미학 가운데서도 특히 『주역』을 대상으로 하여 『주역』경문과 괘효상에 나타나는 미를 분석하였다. 『주역』은 그래도 기본적으로는 글로 쓰인 문헌이기 때문에 본 논문에서는 『주역』의 경문經文과 전문傳文에 나타나는 문예미를 분석하였다. 그 결과 『주역』의 경문은 시적 요소가 많았음을 밝힌다. 그리고 전문에서는 경문을 설명하고 있는데 이러한 설명은 대부분 효위爻位에 근거하여 설명하고 있다. 그러나 『주역』에서 설명하려고 했던 것은 괘상과 효상이다. 괘상과 효상은 상징적인 것이면서 한편으로 회화나 서예처럼 감상자나 품평자에게 그림을 보고 그림 이면의 이치를 깨닫게 해 준다. 이것은 마치 동양 회화론에서 그림을 해석하는 (...) 것과 같다. 비록 괘상과 효상이 뛰어난 화가가 그린 그림과는 차이가 있어도 그림이 표상하는 바와 괘상이 표상하는 바는 같다고 할 것이다. 사람은 이것을 터득하고 깨달을 수 있다.BR 또한 『주역』은 동양 형이상학의 기반이 되는 책이다. 『주역』의 형이상학에서 문자적으로 의미가 있는 것은 ‘도’와 ‘태극’이라 할 수 있다. 아울러 본 논문에서는 ‘음양’을 형이상학으로 취급하였다. 일반적으로 음양은 ‘기氣’로 이해되나 『주역』의 형이상학적 요소 가운데 중요한 부분은 차지하는 것이 ‘생생불이生生不已’이므로 생생을 현실적인 모습에서 바라보지 않고 우주가 지닌 본체적 모습으로 바라본 것이다. 아울러 우주의 ‘생생불이’의 관점에서 다시 인간을 바라보면서 인간은 최고의 창조품이자 결정품으로 보았다. 이 때문에 『주역』은 우주 본체를 해석하는 것이었으나, 다시 미감으로 인성을 해석하고자 하였다. 그러나 이 작업은 매우 정미하고 난해하므로 우선 대체적인 안을 세워 놓고 다음의 연구 과제로 돌렸다. This work attempts to respond to Tomas Aquinas' Cosmological Argument in a way that combines Set Theory with the idea of the ‘Book of Change’. The study defines the ith Cause Set on which to operate on, which leads to the ontological commitment of austerity that the ‘First Cause's Compromise with emergence’ cannot be avoided. It is argued in the present paper that the concept that ‘emergence only consists of Synchronic Emergence and Diachronic Emergence’ should be extended to a (...) broader notion of emergence, which is made up of the two discussed elements and a third one ‘No-Boundary Emergence’ (beyond the time dimension). The article defines the concept of No-Boundary Emergence, proves why it is a type of emergence that differs from the traditional two types, and asserts that it underlies the bottom layer of the cosmos. This study describes the common feature of all emergence as communication protocols between layers. The assemblage of all emergences behaves similar to a distributed system that cannot be restricted by Gödel's theorem. The paper provides evidence (in Big Bang Cosmology, Conformal Cyclic Cosmology, Superstring Theory, Quantum Gravity) for this point of view, and notes that emergence (in the context of No-Boundary Emergence) is not only a simple scientific theory but also a progressive scientific research programme that can spontaneously grow from scientific theory based on Platonism at the expense of a degenerating shift to the ontological commitment of austerity. This paper proposes an improved model of Schrödinger Cat that provides a new explanation for quantum measurement and argues that there must be a forbidden zone of thought experiments. The study also introduces the implications of ancient Chinese thoughts (namely, the ‘Book of Change’ and Confucius). The paper comes to the conclusion that emergence (crossing the gap between ‘being’ and ‘nothing’, while ignoring the forbidden zone of thought experiments) relieves ‘cosmological insufficiency’ in the sense of Neo-Aristotelism. Erwin Panofsky developed the postulate of clarification to explain the mental habit common to Gothic architecture and Western medieval scholasticism, but the postulate is equally applicable to the commentary tradition of Song-dynasty China. The commentary on the Book of Changes authored by Cheng Yi (1033–1107) provides a good example of how the Confucians of the Song dynasty took their concern for clarity to a recognizably medieval extreme. By looking at how Cheng Yi understands and foregrounds the clarity of (...) the Book of Changes, we can begin to see both what was medieval about Song-dynasty China and why the medieval method continues to be viable for interpreters of the Book of Changes. In the current "Eastern culture fad" now engulfing the East Asian mainland, the Book of Changes, that repository of "shining mysteries" that symbolizes the special quality of East Asian culture, has attracted considerable attention. Over the past several thousand years, the Book of Changes has played an extremely important role in molding the foundation of China's great intellectual tradition. It is for this reason that this work has always been so highly regarded as "the first of (...) the Six Classics," as "one of the three mysteries." But the extent and depth of the present studies of the Book of Changes are unprecedented. The Book of Changes was first introduced to the West in the seventeenth century and, arousing the interest of Western scholars, was translated into one language after another. But never before have so many scholars in so many countries been so caught up in studying the Book of Changes as at present. The reason this work has attracted such universal attention is in part the particular conditions of the times and in part the timeless, lasting value of the Book of Changes itself. (shrink)

본 논문에서는 『주역』을 중심으로 우환의식이라는 동양의 독특한 사고를 살펴보고자 한다. 우리는 흔히 우환과 우환의식을 구분하지 않고 사용한다. 그러나 우환은 마음 안에 걱정이 있는 상황이다. 그러한 상황 속에 놓여 있는 인간은 제대로 주변을 인식하거나 판단할 수 없다. 이에 반해 우환의식은 고난이나 곤경에 처한 인간의 심리상태인 우환을 적극적으로 개선해 나가고자 하는 의식적 깨달음이자 행위이다. 따라서 우환이 생겼다고 하더라도 우환의식을 가지면 현재의 상황을 개선시키고 나아갈 수 있는 발판이 될 수도 있다. 이러한 우환의식은 인간의 주체성에 대한 자각으로부터 출발한다. 이는 자기 상황에 대한 책임 및 (...) 결정을 외재의 신에게 맡기는 것 이 아니라 스스로의 행위의 결과로서 책임을 지겠다는 태도이다. 이러한 우환의식이 『주역』의 발생배경이 되었다. 은말주초에 제작된 『주역』은 믿음의 대상이 ‘신’에서 점점 인간 행위에 대한 노력과 결과로 바뀌어가는 시대적 배경 속에서 등장했다. 이런 변화는 인간의 주체성이 도덕적 책임의식으로 나아가는 발로가 되었다. 기존의 사고라면 우환이 닥쳤을 때 하늘에 제사를 지내고 그 뜻을 알아내려는 것에 더 중점을 두었는데 반해, 『주역????에 서는 하늘의 뜻도 중요하지만 그 보다는 개인이 스스로 우환에 당면했을 때 극복하기 위해 어떻 게 행동해야하는가에 역점을 두고 있다. 『주역』에서 우환을 극복하는 방법은 두 가지가 있다. 그것은 계신공구와 무구이다. 삼가고 두려워하는 마음을 가지고 항상 나의 행동을 돌아보고 반성 하는 태도이다. 여기에서 우환의식의 철학치료적 요소가 드러난다. 우리는 길흉화복을 주어진 결과로서 수동적으로 받아들이는 것이 아니라 자신의 행위에 의해 얼마든지 개선할 수 있는 변 화의 상황으로 인식하게 되면 더 이상 주어진 상황에 휘둘리지 않고 상황을 적극적으로 개선해 나가려는 의지를 가질 수 있다. 바로 자기 주체적인 삶을 살 수 있는 것이다. 이에 본 연구에서 는 우환의식을 통한 삶의 적극적인 태도가 필요하다고 본다. 또한 이러한 태도가 철학치료로서 충분한 가치가 있음을 밝히고자 한다. 이 논문은 『주역』 에 나타난 미래 예측의 특성에 대해서 논한 것이다. 아울러 오늘날 대중적으로 알려진 명리사주 이론에 대해서도 어떠한 특성이 있는지 살펴보았다. 이 과정에서 이 논문은 미래 예측에 대한 것을 거대 미래 예측과 단순히 개인의 운명을 점치는 소규모 미래 예측으로 구분하였다. 거대 미래 예측이란 국가나 사회, 나아가서는 세계의 운명을 예측하고 만약 거기에 부정적이거나 좋지 않은 일이 있다면 이를 피하는 방안까지 제시해야 한다는 것이다. 이와 반대로 소규모 미래 예측은 예측의 정확성에 있어서도 확률이 떨어질 뿐만 아니라 예측함이 거의 불가능하다고 하였다. 논자는 이를 (...) 결론 마지막에서 거대한 강물을 그 물줄기도 바꿀 수 있고 나아가서는 그 흐름을 예측할 수 있지만, 그 강에서 발생하는 작은 소용돌이는 예측하기 힘들다고 비유하였다.BR이러한 경향은 원래 선진 시기의 『주역』 경문에서도 나타난다. 이 논문에서는 예시를 많이 들지는 않았지만 경문에 나타나는 특성이 사회 전반의 정치 및 경제와 긴밀히 관련되어 있으며, 선진 시기 사람들도 이것으로부터 역리易理를 찾아내려고 하였던 점을 지적하였다. 이는 곧 『주역』이 한 사람만을 위한 것이 아닌 공동체의 이익을 위하여 공헌한 것임을 말하였다. 이러한 것을 또한 점친 용례에서 찾으려 하였다. 선진 시기 점을 친 용례는 『좌전』과 『국어』에 밖에는 나타나지 않는다. 점을 친 용례를 분석해 보았을 때도 순수하게 점사만을 보고 판단을 한 것이 아니라, 사람과 상황 등 여러 가지 요소를 종합적으로 보아 결정함을 논증하였다.BR그렇다면 이것이 과연 『주역』의 미래 예측에 한정된 것인지를 파악하기 위해 사주명리의 이론을 살펴보았다. 구체적인 사주 이론은 다른 논문이나 책에서 잘 설명하였으므로 여기에서는 그 기본 원리만 설명하고 다시 사주 이론의 공부론에 주목하였다. 즉 사주 이론 역시 처음에는 정명론적 요소에서 출발하지만, 공부론으로 들어가면 불리한 사주를 없애야 한다고 주장하였다. 이것이 명리사주의 공부론인데, 이를 볼 때 사주 역시 『주역』의 미래예측의 방향과 동일한 방향으로 흐름을 알 수 있다. 이에 본 논문에서는 거대 미래 예측에 주목하여 인간 공동체의 이익을 위한 예측을 해야 한다고 주장하였다. The I Ching, probably the oldest book in existence, provides a system of knowledge that makes it possible to analyze the patterns of changes in life governed by the Immutable Law of Change. Whether we use the I Ching for divination or to study the principles involved with it, if we allow ourselves to be governed by its teachings, we shall enrich the content of our lives, free ourselves from anxiety, and become harmless or even intelligently helpful to (...) others and pleasant companions to ourselves. This translation of the I Ching has been especially prepared for practical use in divination. This book discusses political change in the view of Confucian thought. This study focuses on the Book of Change, which is one of the nine basic books of Confucius School, and has dominated oriental thought in this field for more than three thousand years.

In the 1932 version of his New Treatise on the Uniqueness of Consciousness, Xiong Shili interprets the classical Chinese Book of Changes as an illustration of the basic configurations of consciousness. His interpretation relies on concepts developed by Yogācāra Buddhism, which he criticizes, adapts, and translates into language that can then be applied to the Confucian and Neo-Confucian traditions. As a result, Xiong’s interpretation of the Book of Changes bears comparison with more recent phenomenological readings of (...) both Yogācāra Buddhism and Neo-Confucianism. (shrink)

Abstract:This article enquires into a transcultural aesthetic: bi-xing (inspired metaphor) in China and symbolic representation in the West, which share the common logic of correlative thinking. By examining its earliest provenance in the Zhouyi (Book of Changes) and Shijing(Book of Songs) in China's high antiquity in relation to divination, symbolization, and poetic creation in the West, it argues that this aesthetic arose from omen readings in divination, went through symbolism in linguistic representation, and became a poetic principle (...) in aesthetic thought. It concludes that correlative thinking was an approach to knowledge production and conception in traditional thought across cultures. (shrink)

이 글의 목적은 『주역』의 ‘대대원리’에 입각하여 삶과 죽음간의 본질적 관계를 탐색함으 로써 삶과 죽음의 의미를 이해하고, 어떻게 잘 살다가 어떻게 잘 죽을 것인가에 대한 철학 적 관점을 제시하는데 있다. 음ㆍ양 간 상관성, 동시성, 상함성, 그리고 상보성의 대대 인 식원리는 삶과 죽음간의 본질적 관계를 깨닫게 한다. 대대적 사고는 잘 산다는 것과 잘 죽 는다는 것이 어떤 관계에 있는지를 명확히 인식시켜주는 중요한 핵심 논리가 된다. 우선 삶과 죽음 관계의 철학적 의미는 선행연구 탐색을 통해 정리하고, 『주역』의 대대․변역논리에 근거하여 삶과 죽음의 관계를 파악하였다. 전일론적 (...) 관점에서 보면 삶과 죽음은 하나의 통합된 대대관계이며, 상호적 관계 속에서 서로 영향을 주고받는 동시적이 며 상함적 관계임을 알 수 있다. 사례로 본 예괘의 풀이에서도 삶에서 겪게 되는 기쁨과 근심, 쾌락과 우환 등 길함과 흉함은 언제라도 상호 전화할 수 있음을 보여준다. ‘삶’과 ‘죽음’은 결코 분리하여 설명할 수 없다는 대대적 인식은 죽음의 문제를 삶의 중심으로 끌어들여서 회피하지 말고 직면할 것을 요구한다. 삶과 죽음의 본질을 깨닫게 되면 품위 있 고 의미 있는 삶을 살아간다는 것이 곧 좋은 죽음을 맞이하기 위한 필요조건이 되기 때문 이다. 연구의 시사점은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 삶을 영위하는 동안에 죽음을 잘 준비함으로써 당 하는 죽음이 아닌 기꺼이 맞이하는 죽음이 가능하다. 둘째, 쾌락만을 추구하는 삶에 방향 전환의 계기를 만들 수 있다. 셋째, 웰빙과 웰다잉은 반드시 함께 논의되어야 한다. 넷째, 잘산다는 것의 참의미는 서로 배려하고 나누며 함께하는 공동체의 삶임을 자각하게 한다. 다섯째, 물질만능의 비인간적인 현재 삶의 방식에 성찰의 기회를 제공한다는 점 등이다. Kit Pedler, the scientist who co-created the ?DoomwatchOCO television series to warn us of the dangers of technology, presents his vision of a totally different way of being in the world. Mankind, Pedler believes, stands at a critical point in history and has to reassess its relationship and the web of interactions that make up the total life-form of the planet. Pedler calls this life-form Gaia, after the Greek earth mother goddess, a being whose sole concern is the survival of (...) the planet itself. Mankind is provoking the wrath of the life-form by its high technology, accelerating entropy and production of planetary disorder. Can we halt the technological Behemoth and live in harmony with the planet again? Kit Pedler says ?yes, we can, indeed, that we have no choice but to do soOCO. He outlines highly practical ways every individual can change his or her way of life to reduce our personal entropy debt. Do we need to eat factory-farm beef rather than, the sun-product, grain? Must be build homes from steel and concrete rather than, the renewable earth-product, timber? Is there an alternative to expensive, and ecologically destructive, drugs? From experiments with his own lifestyle Kit Pedler comes to some profoundly optimistic conclusions. He demonstrates how low-entropy living can have unexpected rewards, from restoring our respect for the creatures with which we share the earth, greater independence and freedom through learning abandoned skills and, above all, by the recovery of a lost vision, once possessed by our forefathers, which enables us to see and feel in ways forgotten by industrial man. The article focuses mainly on linguistic aspects, paying special attention to meanings of the word ZHEN 貞. The research is based on the text version and commentary by Wang Bi 王弼 from Wei Dynasty, classical Ten Wings commentaries from the 1st mil. BC, works by scholars from Han, Tang, Song and Qing Dynasties, as well as translations by Western sinologists. In the first part of the article, the semantic approach is applied, in order to trace origins and existing definitions of (...) the term ZHEN. In the second part, a creative deconstruction approach will be used to analyze the entire text, revealing atypical meanings within various schemes: 1) in the layer of hexagram succession chain and judgments, 2) in relationships of lines, 3) in problematic and inauspicious situations where the word is mentioned. 본고에서는 『주역』의 강령을 현대화하는 작업의 하나로서, 인간경영의 관념에 착안하여 變通의 원리 속에 활용된 時中觀을 조명하고자 한다. 이른바 ‘인간경영’은 지식과 지혜의 통합적 지평에서 살아가는 실천적 삶과 관련이 있다. 현실적 세계는 變通의 실재(reality)로서, 이 실재의 과정을 운용하는 방식에 時中의 기제가 있다. 시중은 변화하는 세계에서 세계를 변화시키는, 시의적절한 조화나 질서, 즉 中道의 원칙이다. 그것은 인간이 삶의 가치를 인식하고 예측하고 판단하고 선택하고 결정하는 創發性과 創新性의 방법이다. 이러한 기제는 하늘과 땅의 원리에 입각한 乾과 坤의 합일, 즉 易簡의 정보와 그에 따라 구성된 64괘의 관계망으로 표상된다. 인간은 (...) 이러한 관계망을 이해함으로써 삶의 지침을 설정하고 실천적 행위를 올바르게 선택하고 정확하게 판단할 수 있는 것이다. 시중의 원칙에 따른 삶이 바로 道義의 관문에 들어서는 것이다. 道義의 관문은 온전한 인격체가 지닌 성숙한 삶을 위한 인간경영의 통로이다. 그것은 인간이 변화하는 세계 속에서 세계를 창조적으로 변화시킬 수 있는 자아실현의 통합적 지평을 여는 통로이다. 인간은 시중의 기제를 통하여 내면적 덕성을 함양하고 개인의 욕구와 사회의 이념을 합치하는, 善과 美가 연속선상에 있는 공동체적 가치를 지향할 수 있는 것이다. 『주역』은 도를 음양의 작용으로 신을 음양으로 헤아릴 수 없는 것이라 정의하고 있다. 신은 만물이 묘합되어 있음을 말로 표현한 것이라 하고, 신묘함으로써 덕을 밝히고 그 덕을 백성들이 모두 사용한다고 하였다. 신은 음양이 묘합되어 있는 형이상의 존재로 도덕적이며 형이상‧하를 아우르는 개념이다. 건곤책수와 역을 통해 신을 도울 수 있다고 하고, 기미를 아는 것이 신이라고 하였다. 신이 책수를 통해 표상되었음은 곧 신이 시간과 변화를 주재하는 주재적 존재임을 알 수 있다. 신도는 천지신도라 하여 하늘의 속성으로 보고 있다. 사시가 틀리지 않는다고 하고, 신도로 가르치니 천하가 복종한다고 (...) 한 것으로 보아 형이하까지 아우르는 시간성의 원리적 개념임을 알 수 있다. 신덕행은 덕행을 신스럽게 한다는 것으로 덕행이 바로 신과 소통할 수 있는 근거가 되며, 신과 통할 수 있는 방법이 된다. 따라서 신스럽다(신묘하다)는 것은 신의 인격성·도덕성을 깨닫고 실천한다는 의미이다. 신화는 즉 신묘하고(신스럽고) 조화롭게 한다는 것은 신의 의지·도덕성에 순응하여 신을 궁구함으로써 신을 닮아가는 것이 덕을 키워 신을 돕는 것이다. 신명에서의 신은 신스러움으로써 덕을 밝힌다고 하고, 신스럽게(신묘하게) 하여 밝힘은 사람에 있고 묵묵히 이루게 하여 말하지 않아도 믿음은 덕행에 있다고 한 것으로 보아 신스러움은 신의 도덕성인 덕이 드러나는 모습이다. 신물은 천지의 도를 밝히고 백성의 연고를 살펴서 신물을 일으켰다고 하여, 신의 도덕성을 드러내는 표상체계가 신물임을 알 수 있다. 귀신은 길흉과 합하여 하나가 되는 존재이다. 삼재지도와 함께 언급하고, 혼이 변함이 된다고 하며, 천지지수가 변화를 이루고 귀신을 행한다고 하였다. 따라서 귀신은 떠돌아다니는 인격성(혼)을 가진 존재이며, 형이상적인 존재이며, 길흉을 판단하는 존재 즉, 돌아간 선성인의 인격성임을 알 수 있다. The intangible refers to the law of change caused by the interaction between yin and yang, and the law is expressed by the divinatory symbolic system (卦爻符号, the trigrams or hexagrams). The epistemic stances of both Whitehead and the Book of Changes are founded on the assumption that process is reality; there are important resonances with respect to perception, meaning and significance. Such a process-oriented approach is productive for developing non-representational and non-dualistic theories in the fields of epistemology, philosophy of language and philosophy of mind. An exploration of these resonances will further provide an appropriate foundation for dialogue between the philosophy of the Book of Changes and (...) that of contemporary Euro-American philosophy. 食⋅酒는 인간의 생리적 요구를 충족시킬 뿐 아니라 인간의 문화적 정서를 내포하고 있어 일정부분 인간의 정서적 요구를 만족 시켜주기도 한다. 따라서 食, 즉 인간이 음식물을 먹고 마신다는 것은 생명의 유지는 물론 인간의 기본적인 욕구와 감성, 이성 등의 잠재된 능력을 균형적으로 발달하게 하여 인간이 인간으로서 주체적 삶을 지속적으로 가능하게 한다. 또한 인간은 먹고 마시는 행위를 통하여 사회생활에서 화합과 처세술을 펼칠 수 있는 좋은 수단으로 활용하기도 한다. 『주역』에 등장하는 성인들은 먹는 문제를 해결하기 위한 방편으로 다음과 같은 일을 시행했다. 복희는 ‘노끈을 매어서 그물을 만들어 (...) 사냥을 하고 물고기를 잡게 했다.’ 사냥할 때 쓰는 그물과 물고기를 잡을 때 쓰는 어망을 발명하여 먹거리를 해결하도록 했고, ‘신농은 논과 밭을 갈아 농사를 지을 수 있는 가래나 쟁기를 발명하여 나무를 깎아 보습을 만들고, 나무를 휘어 쟁기를 만들어 밭을 갈고 김매는 이로움을 천하에 알렸다.’ 이로써 곡류의 먹거리를 해결했다. 이는 백성의 먹거리를 안정적이고 지속적으로 해결할 방법을 알려 줌으로써 안정된 사회를 유지하도록 했다. 『주역』에서 ‘食’ 자는 27번 언급되는데 「잡괘전」의 “噬嗑食也”을 포함하여 12괘에서 언급하고 있다. ‘술(酒)字’는 8번 언급되는데 4괘에서 그 내용을 담고 있다. 그 4괘는 需卦, 坎卦, 困卦, 旣濟卦인데 여기에는 모두 坎卦(☵)가 들어있다. 본고에서는 ‘마시고 먹고 잔치하며 즐거워한다(飮食宴樂)’, ‘우물에 진흙이 있어 먹지 않는다(井泥不食)’, ‘머리를 적실 정도로 마신다(飮酒濡首)’.‘술과 음식을 먹는 것을 절제하다(節飮(酒)食)’ 등의 함의를 통하여 배우는 처세술에 관한 것이다. 따라서 본고는 『주역』에서 음식과 술에 부여된 의미와 그것을 다루는 인간의 태도를 분석하여, 이를 근거로 현대인이 먹고 마시는 행위를 할 때 교훈으로 삼을 수 있는 처세술을 제시하려는 논문이다. 역학에서 호체는 괘의 구성 및 경문해석에 있어서 긴요한 역할을 한다. 그러나 호체에 대한 연구나 그 활용도에 대한 인식은 박약한 것이 현실이다. 본 논문은 본괘와 호체 그리고 호체의 호체(호호체)사이에 이어지는 연관성을 규명함으로써 역의 구성과 해석에 있어서 호체가 갖는 중요성을 재조명하고자 한다. 64괘는 16개의 호체로, 16개의 호체는 4개의 호체로 모인다. 4개의 호체는 중천건⋅중지곤⋅수화기제⋅화수미제가 된다. 즉 본괘의 호체로 성립된 6획괘에서 다시 호체를 추출하여 6획괘를 만들면 건⋅곤⋅기제⋅미제 4개의 괘로 수렴된다는 것이다. 본고에서는 호체의 호체를 호호체라 명명하고 이 호호체 4개 괘와 그에 각각 소속되어 있는 호체 (...) 및 본괘는 그 의미 해석에 있어서 일정한 연관이 있음을 주장하고자 한다. 본고는 호호체의 「단전」과 「대상전」을 중심으로 그 소속된 호체 및 본괘의 공통적인 의미를 드러내었다. 중천건과 중지곤은 호호체⋅호체⋅본괘에 모두 존재하므로 본호체(本互體)라 명명하였고 수화기제와 화수미제는 상대에 근원을 두고 있으므로 피호체(彼互體)라 명명하였다. 그 외의 호체(互體)들은 호체라 명명하였다. 호호체 중천건은 본호체 중천건을 비롯하여 택천쾌⋅천풍구⋅택풍대과 4개의 호체를 두었으며 이 4개의 호체는 열여섯 개의 본괘와 함께 중천건의 「단전(彖傳)」 중 만물이 바탕 하여 비롯되는[萬物資始] 위대한 시작[大始]에 참여하고 있다. 호호체 중지곤은 본호체 중지곤을 비롯하여 산지박⋅지뢰복⋅산뢰이 4개의 호체를 두었으며 이 4개의 호체는 16개의 본괘와 함께 중지곤의 「단전」 중 만물이 바탕하여 생하며[萬物資生] 만물을 이룸에 참여하고 있다. 호호체 수화기제는 피호체 화수미제를 비롯하여 화택규⋅뇌택귀매⋅뇌수해 4개의 호체를 두었으며 이 4개의 호체는 16개의 본괘와 함께 수화기제의 「단전」 중 ‘초길(初吉). 종지즉란(終止則亂)’이란 의미대로 처음에는 길(吉) 하지만 나중은 어지러워짐을 알려주고 있다. 호호체 화수미제는 피호체 수화기제를 비롯하여 풍화가인⋅풍산점⋅수산건 4개의 호체를 두었으며 이 4개의 호체는 16개의 본괘와 함께 화수미제 「단전」의 의미를 공유하고 있다. 즉 ‘가운데를 지났으니 돌아올 수 없다[未出中也].’ ‘계속하여 끝마치지 못하기 때문이니 비록 자리가 마땅하지 않지만, 굳센 양과 부드러운 음이 호응한다[不續終也 雖不當位 剛柔應也].’는 의미대로, 계속하여 끝나지 않은 채 맞지 않는 것들끼리 묶여서 끝없이 이어지는 인간의 삶이 내재(內在)되어 있다. 『주역』은 중천건⋅중지곤으로 시작하여 수화기제⋅화수미제로 끝난다. 64괘의 호호체가 이 4괘로 귀결된다는 것은 이 4괘가 시작과 마침을 주관하며 그 사이의 모든 괘들은 이 4괘의 범주 속에서 작용함을 보여주는 것이라 할 것이다. 호호체 「단전」과 「대상전」의 내용은 호호체로 귀속되는 호체 및 본괘를 해석함에 있어서 일정한 의미상 연관성을 지니며 그 해석의 방향성을 가리킨다고 생각된다. 이는 호체를 『주역』 괘 성립의 핵심적 원리로 조명해 볼 수 있는 여지를 열어주며, 동시에 호체가 주역해석에 있어서 중요한 의미를 지니고 있음을 시사하는 것이다. This semester-long research project examined the use of social studies trade books to thematically teach about six individuals who served as change agents in the United States during the late 19th century and early 20th century. Three of the individuals were African American men, Robert Smalls, Frederick Douglass, and John Roy Lynch, who took civic action to address racial discrimination faced by the Black community in the half century following the U.S. Civil War. The other three indivduals were women women, (...) Ida B. Wells, Clara Lemlich, and Jane Addams, who challenged social inequities and injustices within their communities. Over the course of the semester-long research project, sixth-grade U.S. history students read selected trade books, examined primary sources, completed graphic organizers, and crafted writing assessments about each of the six individuals. Students demonstrated complex historical thinking, integrated economic and civic thinking, and communicated thematic ideas of systemic oppression of minorities, women, and the poor. They struggled to make connections between examples of historic oppression and contemporary examples of societal oppression. (shrink)

Experimental tests about cross-cultural differentiation of cognitive style conclude that East Asian and Western cognition differ. Tendencies described as East Asian include holism, non-linearity, expectation of change, relationalism, field dependence, causal pluralism, dialecticism, and a tolerance of contradiction. Cross-cultural psychologists generally refrain from discussing the intellectual history or cultural evolution of these differences, preferring to explain results on cognitive scales in terms of results on social scales assessed using present-day participants. The present article attempts to partially close this explanatory gap (...) through detailed discussion of tendencies of East Asian cognitive style as represented in what is probably the most influential book in the history of East Asia, The Book of Changes. This study purports to show that the content of the Yijing 易經 and its commentaries is best described in terms of the cognitive tendencies just mentioned, that reading the Yijing activated those cognitive tendencies, and that the Yijing attained prodigious influence on subsequent Chinese and East Asian cultures through four known mechanisms of cultural transmission. Informed by this case study, researchers of cross-cultural cognition may be positioned to develop a richer appreciation of the cultural representation and evolution of East Asian cognitive style in historical context. This book is a translation of a key commentary on the Book of Changes, or Yijing, perhaps the most broadly influential text of classical China. The Yijing first appeared as a divination text in Zhou-dynasty China and later became a work of cosmology, philosophy, and political theory as commentators supplied it with new meanings. While many English translations of the Yijing itself exist, none are paired with a historical commentary as thorough and methodical as that written by (...) the Confucian scholar Cheng Yi, who turned the original text into a coherent work of political theory.
