The extraction process of palm seed oil was optimized. Using palm seed as raw material, oil extraction rate was used as an index. The effects of flash extraction, ultrasonic-assisted extraction, supercritical extraction, and aqueous enzymatic extraction on the yield of palm seed oil were investigated. The extraction methods and technological conditions of palm seed oil were optimized by the orthogonal method on the basis of single factor. The seed oil was analyzed and detected. The results showed (...) that the water enzymatic extraction method was the best, and the optimal extraction conditions were as follows: enzymatic hydrolysis time 16 h, enzymatic hydrolysis temperature 50°C, and enzymatic content 2.0%. The oil yield of palm seed was 16.48%. Conclusion. Water enzymatic extraction process of palm seed oil is reasonable, the active ingredients are rich, and the quality of seed oil is better, providing reference for the development and research of palm seed oil. The emergence of new obstetrical and neonatal technologies, as well as more aggressive clinical management, has significantly improved the survival of extremely low birth weight infants. This development has heightened concerns about the limits of viability. ELBW infants, weighing less than 1,000 grams and no larger than the palm of one's hand, are often described as of late twentieth century technology. Improved survivability of ELBW infants has provided opportunities for long-term follow-up. Fille de l’Encyclopédie (1751-1772, 28 vol.) de Diderot et d’Alembert, l’Encyclopédie méthodique (1782-1832, 212 vol.) de Panckoucke conserve la palme du gigantisme. Est-ce cette raison qui l’a fait passer dans l’oubli ou a-t-elle été elle-même dépassée tant par les événements historiques que par les développements scientifiques fulgurants? Pourtant, cette encyclopédie « par ordre de matières » revêt un intérêt considérable. En synthétisant ce moment particulier des savoirs liant mots et choses, elle représente un chaînon incontournable entre l’épistémè des Lumières et (...) celle du xixè siècle. La Méthodique met en évidence le circuit étendu de chaque science et son utilité sociale. Par ailleurs Panckoucke choisit les directeurs de Dictionnaires pour leur qualité d’expert et ils font autorité. Il faut aussi prendre en compte qu’entre Diderot et Wikipédia, il y a eu la Révolution française qui, dans le domaine de la pensée n’a rien changé ni aboli, mais qui « a changé les conditions d’exercice » au cœur desquelles travaille Naigeon, auteur des trois tomes du Dictionnaire de Philosophie ancienne et moderne présentés, sous forme d’extraits, dans ce Vol. IV de nos Anthologies. Malgré les tragédies individuelles de la Terreur, la voie vers la démocratie a été ouverte. Dans la conception de son Dictionnaire, Naigeon ne cache pas son militantisme athée qui fait qu’à la discussion de la dimension politique du religieux s’ajoute le point de vue de l’historien des sciences. L’éditrice, Claire Fauvergue, montre comment à travers le Discours préliminaire et les 14 articles recueillis qui vont de d’Alembert à Religieux-Irréligieux en passant par Condillac, Hobbes ou Diderot et Fréret, Naigeon renouvelle non seulement les sources de l’histoire de la philosophie mais aussi leur usage et leur analyse. Attentive à l’efficacité de son travail original d’auteur, veillant à la diversité de ses choix éditoriaux, privilégiant ce qui est représentatif du genre encyclopédique et de son évolution, Fauvergue illustre avec précision comment la figure de l’éditeur se mêle indissolublement à celle de l’auteur. Un système philosophique peut-il se maintenir à travers le temps ? Peut-il renaître après des siècles ? Oui, s'il peut faire l'objet d'une pensée vivante et, donc, personnelle.C'est pourquoi le cardinal Mercier estime que le thomisme authentique est appelé à se rajeunir sans cesse et à prendre la forme d'un néothomisme. Pour renouveller le thomisme, dit le Cardinal, « il ne peut s'agir simplement de retourner en arrière » ; il ne peut être question de considérer la doctrine thomiste comme (...) « une momie ensevelie dans un tombeau et autour duquel nous n'aurions qu'à monter la garde, mais comme un organisme toujours jeune, toujours en activité » ; en l'occurrence, ce qui importe avant tout, c'est esprit » dont la doctrine est animée. Pour saisir exactement l'idée du cardinal Mercier, il faut se référer à l'époque de son enseignement à l'Université de Louvain. En particulier, on doit se rappeler l'importance attachée à l'organisation universitaire de la recherche scientifique, au cours des dernières décades du dix-neuvième siècle, et il est nécessaire de se souvenir de la distinction introduite alors entre la « science faite » et la « science qui se fait » . Le cardinal Mercier n'a pas hésité à appliquer ces vues à la philosophie et dès lors au thomisme, qu'il considérait comme la philosophie vraie . Cependant il ne lui était guère possible, à cette époque, d'établir, à ce point de vue, une nette différence entre les sciences et la philosophie. Depuis lors, les résultats obtenus par la « critique des sciences », ainsi que certaines considérations de la philosophie d'aujourd'hui, sont venus jeter quelque lumière sur ce point capital. Au lieu d'étudier directement le problème, examinons le comportement du philosophe, pour savoir en quoi il diffère de celui de l'homme de science. Dans une étude philosophique se rencontrent régulièrement des références aux philosophes anciens, dont on discute les idées. On remarque que tout philosophe véritable garde indéfiniment son actualité : il ne se trouve jamais entièrement remplacé, annulé, par les penseurs qui le suivent. Assurément, personne ne songerait à prétendre, par exemple, qu'au vingtième siècle il n'y a plus aucun profit à étudier les classiques grecs ; et qui donc s'aviserait de nier que la disparition des œuvres de ces philosophes constituerait une perte irréparable ? A considérer l'histoire, il semble que tout se passe comme si un « colloque philosophique » se poursuivait depuis des siècles. Quelques dizaines de penseurs y prennant une part active. Or, il est remarquable qu'aucun des membres effectifs de ce Symposion ne s'efface jamais, ni ne cède la place à un autre. De fait, le groupe des penseurs déjà réunis voit, de temps à autre, de nouveaux se joindre à eux, mais toujours les derniers venus reconnaissent l'autorité des anciens et ils ne manquent pas de s'expliquer avec eux. Dans le secteur des sciences, il en va tout autrement. Pour s'y mettre au courant, c'est uniquement aux auteurs les plus récents qu'il convient de s'adresser. Les hommes de science du passé n'ont plus qu'une importance historique. Dès lors, on ne s'y réfère pas, on ne discute plus leurs opinions. A la lumière des résultats obtenus grâce à la critique des sciences, il est devenu possible de se faire une idée exacte de la valeur des sciences modernes, de définir la nature de leurs méthodes et la portée de leurs résultats. En conséquence, l'on peut poser le problème de la distinction entre les sciences et la philosophie avec quelque chance d'aboutir à une solution précise et dûment fondée. L'homme de science considère les données d'un point de vue objectif , du « point de vue de Sirius ». C'est notamment ce que fait le physicien lorsqu'il utilise des instruments pour enregistrer les faits et pour noter la régularité de leurs rapports spaciaux et temporels. Tout au contraire, le philosophe s'attache à « intelliger » ces mêmes réalités et à déceler les « significations » qu'elles comportent. Dès lors, en philosophie, un facteur personnel intervient immanquablement, tant en ce qui concerne la richesse des données d'expérience qu'en ce qui concerne la force du regard intellectuel qui les pénètre et les saisit. Ce qui n'autorise nullement de conclure au subjectivisme, bien au contraire. Dès lors, on comprend que tout système philosophique porte la marque de la personnalité « incommunicable » de son auteur et que, pour autant, il demeure irréductible à tout autre, — ce qui entraîne la condamnation de l'éclectisme. En effet, comme la personnalité humaine, tout en demeurant liée à la matière, est essentiellement fonction de l'esprit et, par conséquent de l'activité libre, on comprend que l'œuvre d'un philosophe ne puisse remplacer adéquatement celle d'un autre, même lorsqu'elle lui est de beaucoup supérieure : l'une et l'autre demeurera donc actuelle et chacune vaudra d'être entendue, discutée, fût-ce pour être réfutée. Par ailleurs, on ne voit pas le moyen de prévoir comment la pensée philosophique s'orientera dans la suite. A cet égard, il y a bien des traits communs à l'art et à la philosophie. Cependant la différence demeure profonde, car le propre de la philosophie est de tendre à découvrir la vérité dans sa valeur absolument universelle ; et en cela son activité de recherche rejoint celle de l'homme de science. C'est pourquoi, les différents systèmes ne présentent pas la même valeur philosophique ; et, comme il nous est donné de suivre les échange de vues du grand « colloque philosophique », nous sommes en droit de donner la palme à tel ou tel penseur, par exemple S. Thomas, s'il nous paraît être le meilleur. Il reste, que les autres penseurs se trouvent, eux aussi, d'une manière qui leur est propre, en possession de quelque vérité, même s'ils s'égarent sur les questions fondamentales ; ainsi qu'aimait à le répéter le cardinal Mercier : « dans toute erreur il y a une âme de vérité » Il en résulte que si l'on veut se faire le disciple de S. Thomas, c'est par un effort personnel qu'on doit poursuivre l'œuvre de celui-ci. Sans doute, le thomiste est-il supposé reprendre la structure essentielle du système, l'ensemble des thèses doctrinales, mais c'est pour les faire vivre, à savoir pour les rendre fécondes en les gardant enracinées dans une expérience de base, comme S. Thomas, sans aucun doute, a dû le faire lui-même. C'est à partir de pareille expérience que le Docteur Angélique a abstrait ses dées et qu'il a établi les catégories fondamentales de son système ; et c'est à ces données d'expérience qu'il n'a cessé de se référer, pour éclairer toujours davantage ses idées et en équilibrer le contenu, pour les compléter et, au besoin, les corriger. Il faudrait donc découvrir où se situe cette expérience chez S. Thomas, — par exemple, en rapport avec sa conception si personnelle de l'unité substantielle de l'homme et celle non moins personnelle de la signification de Y esse ; — travail difficile, car S. Thomas se retire modestement derrière l'exposé sincère de sa doctrine, sans fournir la description « phénoménologique » de son expérience personnelle, comme les auteurs actuels se plaisent à le faire ; travail ardu, qui suppose l'étude attentive et scrupuleuse du texte authentique, du milieu doctrinal, des sources littéraires et de la manière dont S. Thomas les utilise. Les résultats de pareille étude permettront de voir se profiler l'expérience qui fut la terre nourricière de la doctrine élaborée par le Docteur Angélique. Il faudra s'efforcer de faire soi-même une expérience analogue, tout aussi personnelle, c'est-à-dire liée étroitement au tempérament de la personne qui la fait, à la formation qu'elle a acquise, dès lors aux conditions de temps et d'espace dans lesquelles elle s'est développée, à l'atmosphère philosophique qu'elle respire, etc. : bref, une expérience réelle, vivante, donc « d'aujourd'hui ». C'est à partir de là que surgira la doctrine et que pourra se construire le système ; comme c'est à partir de là que l'idée thomiste pourra croître, se renouveller, garder sa perpétuelle jeunesse et sa fécondité. An aging population is often taken to require a profound reorganization of the prevailing health care system. In particular, a more cost-effective care system is warranted and ICT-based home care is often considered a promising alternative. Modern health care devices admit a transfer of patients with rather complex care needs from institutions to the home care setting. With care recipients set up with health monitoring technologies at home, spouses and children are likely to become involved in the caring process and (...) informal caregivers may have to assist kin-persons with advanced care needs by means of sophisticated technology. This paper investigates some of the ethical implications of a near-future shift from institutional care to technology-assisted home care and the subsequent impact on the care recipient and formal- and informal care providers. The existence of a mathematical theory determining the shape of the Great Pyramid is a long‐standing assumption, and speculation on the subject dates back to Herodotus. Roger Herz‐Fischler's study presents and discusses eleven major theories and their proponents in the light of archaeological and philosophical considerations. The historiographical aspect of the study is very useful, as is the formulation and discussion of some of the problems. A brief sociological case study of the Pi‐theory and the reasons for its propagation and (...) popularity in Britain is particularly interesting. But although this book offers much that will be of interest to professional and amateur historians of mathematics and pyramid enthusiasts, it does not provide a definitive conclusion to the 2,500‐year‐old debate.Having dismissed all but three of the theories and unable to decide among them, Herz‐Fischler reaches the rather extraordinary conclusion that there may have been no true theoretical basis for the angles of inclination that might have been established “by eye” . In settling for this interpretation, however, he fails to consider how the angle would have been replicated on the different sides of a pyramid or how angles of inclination would have been maintained or transferred to other pyramids of different sizes: for example, Khufu's three queens' pyramids have slopes virtually identical to those of the main pyramid .The three theories among which Herz‐Fischler cannot decide are all proportion‐based theories, two relating to the angle of inclination and one to the angle of the arris . This conclusion is significant in its own right and relates to practical building considerations. Herz‐Fischler is keen to distinguish mathematically between integer proportional systems and the seked theory , a system attested in ancient Egyptian mathematical texts and related to the division of the cubit into seven palms, each of four fingers. But the close relation between these two methods of measurement in practical terms is clear, and either one could have been used with ease by an ancient builder.Herz‐Fischler states that “there simply is no archaeological evidence for the above three rise over run based theories” . Here he is too quick to dismiss the evidence presented by Flinders Petrie from a mastaba at Meidum . Outside the corners of the structure are walls with traces of horizontal lines at cubit intervals and sloping lines marking the inclination of the faces. Herz‐Fischler points to the lack of marks to indicate how the slope was constructed, but he fails to consider how an identical slope was constructed eight times around the structure if such a horizontal measurement was not used. Nor are the corners of the structure level; thus the correct measurements must be calculated relative to the depth. Mark Lehner, in his Complete Pyramids , page 220, offers evidence from Giza that the builders constructed the corners by measuring in a certain distance from reference points outside the sides. The pyramid drawing from Meroe based on a rectangular grid does not necessarily conflict with a rise and run theory and certainly shows that a proportional system was used relating side length to height. I find this archaeological evidence for the use of rise over run theories convincing, if limited, and it strongly supports side‐inclination based theories over those relating to the arris.The Meroe drawing cannot be taken as reliable evidence that the seked theory was not used in Fourth Dynasty structures , as it dates to over 2,000 years after the Great Pyramid was constructed and lies outside Egypt. As for the question of whether a seked‐based system or integers were used to construct the angle of the sides, Herz‐Fischler could have used the measured angles of sloping corridors and shafts inside the Great Pyramid that must have been constructed using similar techniques. Further, he makes no attempt to apply these theories to the slopes of other pyramids, although in some cases he does consider examples presented by other authors. Applying these theories more broadly might lead to more decisive results. Before readers undertake to do so themselves, however, they should be alerted that some of the measurements given in Appendix 2 are out of date. Corrected figures are: Abu Rawash, c. 52° ; Bent Pyramid, 55° 00′ 30″ , 43° 01′ 30″ ; Red Pyramid, 44° 44′ . In this last example considerable variation was noted in the inclination of different stretches of the same pyramid face, which suggests that an angle of 45° was intended. This observed variation is very significant considering how little of the casing of the next pyramid constructed—the Great Pyramid—is preserved .Although I find Herz‐Fischler's conclusions rather weak and some of his treatments of archaeological sources too dismissive, this volume provides a useful introduction to the subject and a clear formulation of the problems involved. It is, then, a thought‐provoking contribution to a long‐standing debate. (shrink)

Tekniken medger en rad olika fördelar, exempelvis tätare tillsyn, kontinuerliga mätningar av vitala funktioner, med möjlighet att kontinuerligt ställa diagnos, och snabb respons på larm, men de tekniska lösningarna får också etiska implikationer. Aging populations have become a major concern in the developed world and are expected to require novel care strategies. Public policies, health-care regimes and technology developers alike stress the need for a more individualized care to meet the increased demand for care services in response to demographic change. Increasingly, care services are offered to individuals with diseases and or disabilities in their homes by means of Personalized Health-Monitoring (PHM) technologies. PHM-based home care is typically portrayed as the key to a (...) cost-effective future care that better can accommodate the needs of an aging population and promote care recipients’ independence. In light of the emerging technology-based home care, this article sets forth to investigate the significance and implications of a strong emphasis on independence in relation to this novel care form. Notions of independence as used by care planners, care providers and technology developers are examined in relation to ICT-based home care and the reasonableness of independence as an aim for future health-care is critically discussed. In conclusion, the need for a shift from a strong emphasis on independence to a right to healthy dependence is advocated. (shrink)

Throughout the longstanding debate on privacy, the concept has been framed in various ways. Most often it has been discussed as an area within which individuals rightfully may expect to be left alone and in terms of certain data that they should be entitled to control. The sphere in which individuals should be granted freedom from intrusion has typically been equated with the indisputably private domestic sphere. Privacy claims in the semi-public area of work have not been sufficiently investigated. In (...) this article, the case is made that employees have reasonable expectations on privacy at work. Firstly, in a descriptive analysis, employees’ need for workspace privacy is spelt out. Secondly, a normative analysis explicates the reasons why privacy should be protected. The main thrust is to provide a more inclusive privacy concept and hence, a more adequate basis for privacy protection legislation and codes in the area of work. Contrary to prevailing workplace privacy protection, employees’ need for local privacy should be accommodated as well as informational privacy. (shrink)

We specify two problems in syllogistic: the lack of functoriality of predicates (although a thief is a person, a good thief may not be a good person) and the change of grammatical role of the middle term, from subject to predicate, in some syllogisms. The standard semantics, the class interpretation, by-passes these difficulties but, we argue, in a manner that is at odds with logical intuition. We propose a semantics that is category theoretic to handle these difficulties. With this semantics (...) we specify when syllogisms are valid and we set limits to the class interpretation. To perform this task we show how to construct the categorical notion of an entity in a system of kinds. We devote two brief sections to an argument that our approach is very much in the spirit of Aristotle. (shrink)

This article discusses how decentered understandings of addiction might benefit from ongoing debates in Lacanian psychoanalysis. Departing from recent critiques in critical addiction studies, it claims that psychoanalysis offers a framework that both challenges abstract, essentialist ontologies and recognises addiction as a valid phenomenon. Crucial to this framework is a notion of freedom linked to the symbolic break with bodily enjoyment, which, according to Lacan, lies at the origin of the constitution of subjectivity and which neither presupposes the existence of (...) a conscious will nor rejects freedom as a mere product of abstract bio-political governmentality. The article explores how, in Lacanian psychoanalysis, addiction is seen as a way of denying this freedom through the realisation of an enjoyment independent of the symbolic order. Moreover, the article argues that its definition of addiction allows for both a decentered understanding of addiction and a critical challenging of current societal processes of addictification. "Thick" terms such as "work", "people" or "community" are the nodal points of this intellectual construct. The contributions in this volume are not only concerned with the historical presentation of National Socialist normativity. Rather, they also make suggestions for the analysis of these concepts. Can state sovereignty justify privileged receiving countries exercising authority over non‐members in a third country to safeguard their own interests? Under the current migration governance of the EU, state sovereignty is manifested in migrant interdiction, interception and detention policies employed to prevent unauthorized migrants from reaching the EU, and even from attempting to embark on cross‐Mediterranean journeys. While reinforcement of the Schengen region's external borders is a key aim of the EU's internal migration politics, collaboration with third countries regarding migration (...) control has, in the last decade, become a key feature of its external migration policy. In close collaboration with third countries, the EU has managed to curb the outflux of migrants from transit and sending countries. In effect, irregular migrants are prevented from exiting as well as from entering. This article explores the justifiability of such practices, by questioning commonly invoked models of justification such as the sovereignty “model”, with a special focus on partnership agreements regarding migration control between the EU and Libya. Steven Rose's book is essentially a plea for considering the variety and complexity of life and against simplistic reductions of human and animal behavioral phenomena to single genetic causes.

Perhaps one of the most difficult passages in Hegel's Science of Logic is his treatment of contradiction. If each moment of Hegel's logic is understood to constitute a sort of proof and since contradiction itself is presented as a moment of the logic, then in what sense can one comprehend a proof of contradiction as such? It is difficult to formulate this in any way that does not sound fundamentally incoherent, since it is not just at odds with our ordinary (...) way of thinking but also with the overwhelming majority of the Western philosophical tradition. The basic problem, essentially, is this: if Hegel's logic includes contradiction as one of its moments, then how is Hegel's entire philosophical project not simply incoherent? In the first part of this article, I will attempt to demonstrate one way in which Hegel's treatment of contradiction could in fact be considered coherent, through a close reading of the relevant passages. In this reading, I will particularly focus on the function of Hegel's dialectical concept of sublation (aufheben), and attempt to show (by example) how analysing Hegel's nuanced use of sublation can help us to work through some of his logic's complexities. The overall purpose here will be to present a systematic (as opposed to historical) exposition of Hegel's concept of contradiction and to illustrate the important role that this concept (as the contradiction of contradiction) plays in Hegel's logical method.
