There is general acknowledgement that both the anterior cingulate and orbitofrontal cortex are implicated in reinforcement-guided decision making, and emotion and social behaviour. Despite the interest that these areas generate in both the cognitive neuroscience laboratory and the psychiatric clinic, ideas about the distinctive contributions made by each have only recently begun to emerge. This reflects an increasing understanding of the component processes that underlie reinforcement- guided decision making, such as the representation of reinforcement expectations, the exploration, updating and representation (...) of action values, and the appreciation that choices are guided not just by the prospect of reward but also by the costs that action entails. Evidence is emerging to suggest that the anterior cingulate and orbitofrontal cortex make distinct contributions to each of these aspects of decision making. (shrink)

Das Phänomen des Todes fordert wie kein anderes das philosophische Thaumazein heraus, das Sich-Wundern und das Stellen grundlegender Fragen. Deshalb ist er ein stets wiederkehrendes Thema der Philosophie. Es ist zugleich eines der Themen, dessen philosophische Behandlung im Zeitverlauf die radikalsten Wandlungen erfahren hat. Während viele der Aussagen über den Tod, die wir etwa in der Philosophie des Hellenismus finden, heute noch ebenso gültig sind wie vor mehr als 2000 Jahren, haben sich andere überlebt oder sind Gegenstand von Kontroversen geworden. Ursächlich dafür sind sowohl der medizinische und technische Fortschritt, der es erlaubt hat, den Tod weit über seine jahrtausendealten Grenzen hinaus zeitlich zu verschieben, als auch die zunehmend naturalistischen Sichtweisen von Leben und Tod. Der Band diskutiert primär aktuelle Fragen im Umkreis des Todes, wobei anthropologische, metaphysische und ethische Fragen gleichberechtigt angesprochen werden, u. a. Todesdefinition, Möglichkeiten eines "guten Todes", ärztliches Handeln am Lebensende, Überlebenshoffnungen und die auf den Tod gerichteten Emotionen. Although living conditions have improved throughout history, protest, at least in the last few decades, seems to have increased to the point of becoming a normal phenomenon in modern societies. Contributors to this volume examine how and why this is the case and argue that although problems such as poverty, hunger, and violations of democratic rights may have been reduced in advanced Western societies, a variety of other problems and opportunities have emerged and multiplied the reasons and possibilities for protest.

Ziel der Untersuchung ist zu zeigen, inwiefern Hegels Charakterisierung des Schönen als ‚das sinnliche Scheinen der Idee‘ auch für die Deutung des Naturschönen Erklärungswert hat. Vorausgesetzt ist die für den Idea- lismus Hegelscher Prägung zentrale Doktrin, derzufolge der Natur Ideel- les zugrunde liegt. Schön sind dann Naturphänomene, in denen jener ideelle Grund der Natur durchscheint. Das Erfassen von Ideellem scheint ein Privileg geistiger Wesen zu sein. Dem stehen evolutionsbiologische Argumente entgegen, die dem Schönen einen positiven Selektionswert, etwa bei der sexuellen (...) Partnerwahl, zusprechen. Auch der Mensch hat stammesgeschichtliche Wurzeln, die in ihm weiter wirken. Doch sobald der Geist auf der evolutionären Bühne erscheint, herrscht das Biologische nicht länger mit der uneingeschränkten Macht, die es im Rahmen natürli- cher Selektion hat. Hegels Deutung des Schönen, auch des Naturschönen, ist wesentlich bezogen auf den Geist. Ich verdeutliche dies an einigen Exempeln (Schneekristall, musikalische Harmonie, Abendhimmel, Ge- birgslandschaft, organische Blüten- und Körperformen). Aber wodurch sind Naturschönheit und Kunstschönheit dann voneinander unterschie- den? Die Hervorbringungen der Natur sind lediglich Zufallskonstellatio- nen. Allerdings, so Hegel, hat der Zufall es ‘recht’ gemacht, d.h. hat er etwas reizend Stimmiges gefügt, gewahrt der Geist darin das im Sinnli- chen durchscheinende Ideelle. Eben darin wird, mit Adorno gesprochen, die gemeinsame Wurzel des Kunstschönen und des Naturschönen erkennbar. Wer das Naturschöne preist, begebe sich „an den Rand der Afterpoe- sie“, des Kitsches, meint Adorno. Gleichwohl sei es wahr zu sagen, „die Landschaft der Toscana sei schöner als die Umgebung von Gelsenkirchen“ (Adorno 1993, 110, 112). In der Tat. Doch was meinen wir, wenn wir Landschaften, Blumen, Sonnenuntergänge ‘schön’ nennen, und welche Kriterien bringen wir dafür in Anschlag? Im Folgenden möchte ich darle- gen, inwiefern Hegels Charakterisierung des Schönen als „das sinnliche Scheinen der Idee“ diesbezüglich erhellend und klärend ist. Hinweise auf Adornos ästhetische Theorie ergänzen diese Überlegungen. Dem stehen evolutionsbiologische Argumente entgegen, die zunehmend Einfluss auf die ästhetische Diskussion gewinnen. (shrink)

With the current changes driven by the expansion of the World Wide Web, this book uses a different approach from other books on the market: it applies ontologies to electronically available information to improve the quality of knowledge management in large and distributed organizations. Ontologies are formal theories supporting knowledge sharing and reuse. They can be used to explicitly represent semantics of semi-structured information. These enable sophisticated automatic support for acquiring, maintaining and accessing information. Die Studie unterscheidet sich durch die Konzentration auf die spezifisch natur- bzw. vernunftrechtlichen Lehrstücke des Strafrechts von entsprechenden Forschungen in den benachbarten Disziplinen wie der Strafrechtsgeschichte oder den Kulturwissenschaften. Die Untersuchung hat gezeigt, dass die Strafrechtsphilosophie der neuzeitlichen Naturrechtslehre ein Ergebnis einer Anwendung säkularer Prinzipien auf das Problemfeld staatlicher Strafe ist. Behandelt werden die strafrechtstheoretischen Überlegungen von Grotius, Hobbes, Pufendorf, Wolff, Beccaria und Kant im Hinblick auf die Frage nach dem Ursprung bzw. Geltungsgrund der Strafkompetenz und dem Strafzweck (Abschreckung, Besserung (...) oder Vergeltung). Darüber hinaus werden die Gründe der Affinität der Strafrechtstheorie zu deterministischen psychologischen Modellen sowie die Kritik der kriminalpolitischen Aufklärung an der Strafpraxis des Ancien Régime untersucht. Weil die Naturrechtslehrer im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert in erster Linie an der philosophischen Rechtfertigung der Strafe bzw. der Legitimation der staatlichen Strafgewalt interessiert sind, spielen die soziologischen oder gesellschaftstheoretischen Aspekte der Kriminalität bei ihnen kaum eine Rolle. Die Naturrechtstheoretiker interessieren sich m. a. W. nur für die Geltungsbedingungen des Strafrechts, während die Fragen der Genesis kriminellen Verhaltens weitgehend ignoriert werden. Aber gerade die Konzentration des Blicks auf die spezifisch rechtsphilosophischen Argumetationen eröffnet einen neuen Blick auf die Strafrechtsphilosophie der Aufklärungsepoche. (shrink)

Three phases of a cultural-philosophical criticism can be distinguished during the last 100 years: Firstly, the metaphysical critique of Heidegger, Wittgenstein, and Adorno, secondly, the poststructuralist critique of representation as put forward by Roland Barthes, Michel Foucault, and Jacques Derrida and thirdly ecological critiques as a countermovement, as emanating from Speculative Realism, New Materialism, and Latour's Actor-Network-Theory. Beyond critiques of rationality and of power and discourse, ecological critiques situate the human being in the exterior, which in some traits allows a (...) vitalism of matter to return. Most importantly, ecologism, where it sees itself as relationalism, confuses network relations with interpersonal relationships, which are always already socially terminated. Consequently, they prefer ontology over social philosophy. (shrink)

It is shown how Bohmian trajectories can be derived without the need for Bohmian assumptions such as the guidance law or equilibrium postulate. According to the standard Copenhagen interpretation, Bohmian trajectories cannot be understood as physical paths of particles but must be considered in the framework of descriptive statistics. This does not render them useless but clarifies the field of applications. Without the necessity of the non-crossing rule, the conservation of probability between two Bohmian trajectories can still be proven. The (...) concept is further extended to momentum space and is demonstrated explicitly using general Gaussian wave packets as example. (shrink)

Esse paper pretende introduzir alguns argumentos no debate atual em Filosofia da Religião, especialmente na controvérsia contra o Naturalismo. Nossa abordagem irá focar no significado moral da ideia de Deus, bem como em outros conceitos morais relevantes, a saber, os conceitos de consciência moral, mundo moral e a ideia mesma de “bem”. Em suma, é nossa intenção demonstrar que a maioria de nossas ideias morais está relacionada a uma Pessoa: Deus. Essa conclusão, como pretendemos demonstrar, refuta o Naturalismo.

The critical analysis of habit is regularly complemented by scenarios of how to defy it. Heidegger’s conceptual pairing for taking on this twofold task is “everydayness” and “authenticity.” In this paper, his account is put to test. By choosing an unusual line-up of authors – Heidegger, Hegel, and Diderot –, it identifies three different strategies for overcoming the danger of being ridden by a type. They appeal to authenticity, universality, or individuality. After discussing Hegel’s and Diderot’s accounts, the paper turns (...) to Heidegger’s confrontation between everydayness and authenticity and shows that it remains inconclusive. In order to create a bulwark against habit Heidegger establishes a link between authenticity and the anticipation of death which makes Dasein turn away from the “multiplicity of possibilities” and secures the “simplicity” of resoluteness. This total demolition of particularities and differences paves the way to a totalitarian conception of overcoming customs: The individual is prone to affirm a destiny marked by total homogeneity and equalization. The paper comes to the conclusion that, among the different readings of habit and its discontents, Diderot’s account is the most plausible. (shrink)
