This initial volume of the Collected Works of Edith Stein offers, for the first time in English, the unabridged biography of Edith Stein (Teresa Benedicta of the Cross), depicting her life as a child and young adult. Her text ends abruptly because the Nazi SS arrested, then deported, her to the Auschwitz concentration camp in 1942. Edith Stein is one of the most significant German women of the 20th century. At the age of twenty-five she became the (...) first assistant to Edmund Husserl, the founder of Phenomenology. She was much in demand as a writer and lecturer after her conversion from atheism to Catholicism. Later, as a Discalced Carmelite nun, she maintained her intellectual pursuits until she, like so many others, became a victim of the Nazi persecution that raged across Eastern Europe. By making this landmark work available in English, the Institute of Carmelite Studies provides an eye-witness account of persons and activities on the scene at the time when psychology and philosophy became separate disciplines. In addition to photographs and a map, this volume is enhanced with a preface, the foreword and afterword, notes, and a list of places associated with Edith Stein’s life. It is our aim that these, together with Edith Stein’s text, may help bring into relief the many background details of the rich autobiographical work she has left us. (shrink)

Edith Russell had already written the lives of Carey Thomas and Wilfrid Scawen Blunt when she married Bertrand Russell in 1952. She preserved his files as no one before had, and took a great interest in his earlier years as she did in his current campaigns and family. When Clark’s Life appeared in 1975, she reacted strongly to it. She wrote three drafts of her comments, each draft more extensive, and including information only she would have, such as Russell’s (...) views on personal matters, even his habits of dress. Empathy and sympathy are feeling-acts which bring the self into direct encounter with other persons. In empathy a self grasps the affective act of another self; in sympathy x n persons apprehend a common object while immersed in similar feeling acts. Since touch is the paradigmatic sense for bringing what is felt into proximity with feeling, structural affinities between touch and these feeling acts can be shown. This relationship has been obscured by classical theories of touch in which it is (...) interpreted on analogy with the other senses. When the subject of touch is seen as the living body as a whole, the full range of its possible relationships to affective states can be explored. In this connection the theories of touch of Aristotle, Berkeley and Condillac are critically evaluated. While none recognizes the uniqueness of touch, each sees difficulties in incorporating touch in a general theory of sense. No other thinker so engaged the Russian cultural imagination of the early twentieth century as did Friedrich Nietzche. The Revolution of Moral Consciousness shows how Nietzschean thought influenced the brilliant resurgence of literary life that started in the 1890s and continued for four decades. Through an analysis of the Russian encounter with Nietzsche, Edith Clowes defines the shift in ethical and aesthetic vision that motivated Russia's unprecedented artistic renascence and at the same time led its followers to the brink (...) of cultural despair. Clowes shows how in the last years of the nineteenth century a diverse array of writers and critics discovered Nietzsche's thought, embracing or repudiating it with equal vigor. The literary storm brewing around Nietzsche and the concurrent relaxation of censorship combined to attract a public eager to follow the new intellectual fashion. Young writers, such as Andreev and Kuprin, welcomed the idea of the "superman" as a promising path to personal fulfillment. The tragic fates of their protagonists and the alluring gospel of the vulgar Zarathustra-like characters of such bestselling authors as Boborykin, Artsybashev, and Verbitskaia found enthusiastic, if indiscriminating, audiences ready to be "taught" how to "find themselves." By considering this Nietzschean cult, Clowes draws fresh insight into the nature of the budding popular-culture industry in Russia and the fast-growing reading public. From this ferment emerged the greatest Russian literary voices of the early twentieth century. The revolutionary romantics, Gorky and Lunacharsky, sought in Nietzsche's writing a new vision of total social and cultural change. Merezhkovsky led a generation of mystic symbolists in the search for a literary myth of resurrection. Ivanov, Blok, and Belyi appropriated the image of the "crucified Dionysus" as the central symbol of spiritual transfiguration. Their encounters with Nietzschean thought disclose an even more profound creative struggle with their own cultural past and its established formulations of nation and individual, culture and history. Clowes uses the term future anxiety to speak of a creative mentality that strove to assert itself by diminishing the impact of powerful literary precursors, such as Tolstoi, Dostoevsky, and Solovyov, and opening to the imagination the vision of a future full of vast creative possibility. El problema de la Subjetivación sustantiva en Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, el retorno a la ciencia nativa de Gregory Cajete como ciencia Otra, y la subjetivación adjetiva de la Naturaleza sujeto de derechos en Caroline McDonough son los aspectos que tematiza el presente trabajo; autoras y profesor cuyos aportes, aparentemente no relacionados, guardan cierto paralelismo y complementariedad para la disertación acerca de la protección a la naturaleza, que no solo puede hablar, sino que también requiere estudios y acciones afirmativas para que (...) en efecto, pueda hacerlo. Se trata de un diálogo filosófico interdisciplinario a tres voces acerca del Sujeto y las nuevas Otras (la naturaleza y la ciencia nativa) con respecto al Sujeto de Occidente. Esto, bajo el supuesto según el cual en el estudio de la protección a la naturaleza como sujeto de derechos es importante y enriquecedora la reconstrucción, resignificación y relación de los conceptos de Sujeto, de Ciencia y de Otro, en aplicación. Lo anterior se aplica al estudio y fundamentación crítico-reflexiva de los conflictos en las relaciones socio naturales. La naturaleza como sujeto de derechos es una nueva Otra y se encuentra en estado de subalternización con respecto a los poderes y saberes hegemónicos de Occidente. De igual forma la ciencia nativa es otra Otra con la cual se dialoga y se fundamenta la discusión sobre la naturaleza. La principal contribución de este artículo es proponer la categoría de subalternización para el estudio del problema de la naturaleza. Es geht um die eine absolute Wahl: Gott oder das Nichts!Nietzsche eröffnet die zu ,Jacobi gegen Fichte' analoge Alternative: Gott und das im Glauben an einen guten, gerechten Gott ewig geborgene konzentrische Ich oder Leugnung/Verlust/,Tod' Gottes und ein (...) dezentriertes, aus der Mitte des Kosmos verstoßenes Selbst, das seinen unbedingten Wert im Weltall verloren hat.Das was bei Nietzsche der ,Tod Gottes' und die aus ihm entspringende Heimatlosigkeit bzw. der Sinnlosigkeitsaffekt ist, dem entspricht bei Heidegger die ,,Seinsverlassenheit" des Menschen. So wie für Nietzsche der ,Tod Gottes' es ist, der den Nihilismus auf den Plan ruft, so ist es analog für Heidegger der ,Seinsentzug', der die nihilistische Befindlichkeit des Menschen erwirkt.,Gott ist tot' ist für Heidegger das Ende der abendländischen Metaphysik, von dem sein Denken den Ausgang nimmt. Diotima’s speech claims that philosophy ranks among the erōtica. The standard reading of this holds that erōs manifests in philosophical activity. This is puzzling. Eros has a reputation for overpowering the psyche, making reasoning impossible. The major interpretive discussion of this puzzle suggests that Diotima must therefore accept either non-rationalist philosophizing or rationalist erōs. This paper argues for an alternative. The “ancillary activities view” posits that the erōtica do not manifest erōs but are activities undertaken to achieve its telos. Sans être exhaustif, ce volume constitue sans doute une des plus importantes contributions à la question des rapports que « les » philosophes ont entretenus et entretiennent avec la Shoah, qu’il s’agisse de philosophes adeptes du nazisme exterminateur ou, au contraire, d’opposants, ou encore de victimes rescapées, comme enfin aussi, de contemporains muets. Dans (...) la grande diversité de leurs horizons et de leur nationalité, les contributeurs sont unis par l’engagement philosophique personnel avec lequel ils présentent les philosophes dont ils sont spécialistes, loin de tout exposé doxographique. Loin de clore sur des certitudes, ce numéro rend problématique non seulement un enseignement philosophique de la Shoah, mais plus radicalement interroge l’idée même d’une philosophie de la Shoah.
