The Phenomenology of Internal Time-Consciousness is a translation of Edmund Husserl's Vorlesungen zur Phänomenologie des inneren Zeitbewußtseins. The first part of the book was originally presented as a lecture course at the University of Göttingen in the winter semester of 1904–1905, while the second part is based on additional supplementary lectures that he gave between 1905 and 1910. In these essays and lectures, Husserl explores the terrain of consciousness in light of its temporality. He identifies two categories of temporality—retention (...) and protention—and outlines how temporality provides the form for perception, phantasy, imagination, memory, and recollection. He demonstrates a distinction between cosmic and phenomenological time and explores the relevance of phenomenological time for the constitution of temporal objects. The ideas Husserl developed here are explored further in his Ideas and were pursued until the end of his philosophical career. (shrink)

In this paper we investigate computable isomorphisms of Boolean algebras with operators (BAOs). We prove that there are examples of polymodal Boolean algebras with finitely many computable isomorphism types. We provide an example of a polymodal BAO such that it has exactly one computable isomorphism type but whose expansions by a constant have more than one computable isomorphism type. We also prove a general result showing that BAOs are complete with respect to the degree spectra of structures, computable dimensions, expansions (...) by constants, and the degree spectra of relations. In this article I will discuss how clinicians might best treat adolescents who may die. I initially discuss these patients’ cognition, emotional tendencies, and sensitivity to interpersonal cues. I next discuss their parents’ feelings of loss and guilt and their clinicians’ risk of imposing their own moral views without knowing this. I then address the practical concerns of helping these patients gain or regain resilience and to identify strengths they have had in the past. I finally explore who, among staff, (...) might be best able to do this. I highlight as the main goal that patients, their parents, and ideally also their clinicians are able to come to agree on the best course the patients should take. (shrink)

Ethics consultants’ grasp of ethical principles is ever improving. Yet, what still remains and will remain lacking is their ability to access factors that lie outside their conscious awareness and thus still effect suboptimal outcomes. This article will explore several ways in which these poor outcomes may occur. This discussion will include clinicians’ implicit biases, well-intentioned but nonetheless intrusive violations of patients’ privacy, and clinicians’ unwittingly connoting to patients and families that clinicians regard their moral values and conclusions as superior. Der vorliegende Band enthält den Text der vierstündigen Vorlesung, die Husserl im Wintersemester 1908/09 unter dem Titel "Alte und neue Logik" in Göttingen gehalten hat. Es handelt sich bei dieser Vorlesung zum einen um eine Umarbeitung und Neugestaltung seiner Logikvorlesung von 1902/03, die im Band 2 der Materialien veröffentlicht wurde, zum anderen um eine Vorstufe der in Band XXX der Gesammelten Werke unter dem späteren Titel "Logik und Allgemeine Wissenschaftslehre" veröffentlichten Vorlesung "Einleitung in die Logik und Erkenntnistheorie" von 1910/11. Husserl (...) konfrontiert in der Vorlesung nicht, wie der Titel anzukündigen scheint, die traditionelle Logik mit den zeitgenössischen Reformversuchen dieser Logik, sondern er entwickelt in kritischer Abwehr des Psychologismus, zu dem er ausdrücklich auch Brentanos Reform der Logik rechnet, seine eigene Konzeption der reinen Logik. Konstitutiv für diese Konzeption ist die Zweischichtung in Bedeutungslehre als reine Formenlehre der logischen Bedeutungen ("reine Grammatik") und Geltungslehre. In this piece I discuss two ways in which providers may become able to treat patients better. The first is for them to encourage all medical parties, including medical students, to always speak up. The second is to take initiatives to learn of pain that patients feel but neither show nor spontaneously report. They may refer to this pain as invisible pain, often bitterly, in that others not seeing their pain judge them wrongly and harshly. Providers, once seeing this pain, (...) are encouraged to then take additional measures to try to alleviate it. Clinical examples provided to illustrate the range of treatments providers may add are post-traumatic stress disorders, problems involving substance use, and hoarding disorders. Similar concerns regarding people who are deaf and hard of hearing are also addressed. (shrink)

In den Bernauer Forschungsmanuskripten nimmt Husserl seine frühere, in Husserliana Band X dokumentierte Phänomenologie der formalen Struktur des inneren Zeitbewusstseins neu auf. Dabei stehen die Fragen, welche die Anwendung des Schemas `Auffassung - Auffassungsinhalt' auf das Zeitbewusstein und die Gefahr des unendlichen Regresses betreffen, noch immer im Vordergrund. Es ergeben sich aber auch entscheidende neue Einsichten. Diese betreffen vor allem das auf die Zukunft gerichtete `protentionale' Zeitbewusstsein in seiner Verflechtung mit der `Retention' der Vergangenheit sowie eine spezifisch noematische Bestimmung der (...) Zeitmodalitäten, die zu einer neuen Phänomenologie der Individuation führt. Auch dem Zusammenhang zwischen zeitlichem Urstrom und ichlicher Zeitigung widmet Husserl erstmals eingehende Untersuchungen. Insgesamt handelt es sich bei den vorliegenden Nachlasstexten um eine Phänomenologie des Zeitbewusstseins in einer neuen, `genetischen' Perspektive, die sich nicht nur am Paradigma der Wahrnehmung orientiert, sondern auch den Akten der Erinnerung und der Phantasie Aufmerksamkeit schenkt. Darauf weist uns schon die Mehrheit verschiedener Zahlworter hin, die in der Sprache des gewohnlichen Lebens auftreten und von den Grammatikern unter 5 folgenden Titeln aufgefiihrt zu werden pflegen: die Anzahlen oder Grundzahlen (numeralia cardinalia), die Ordnungszahlen (n. ordinalia), die Gattungszahlen (n. specialia), die Wiederho­ lungszahlen (n. iterativa), die Vervielfaltigungszahlen (n. multi­ plicativa) und die Bruchzahlen (n. partitiva). DaB die Anzahlen 10 als die ersten in dieser Reihe genannt werden, beruht ebenso wie die (...) charakteristischen N amen, die sie sonst tragen - Grund- oder Kardinalzahlen -, nicht auf bloBer Konvention. Sie nehmen sprachlich eine bevorzugte SteHung dadurch ein, daB die samt­ lichen iibrigen Zahlworter nur durch geringe Modifikationen aus 15 den Anzahlwortern hervorgehen (z. B. zwei, zweiter, zweierlei, zweifach, zweimal, zweitel). Die letzteren sind also wahrhafte Grundzahlworter. Die Sprache leitet uns hiermit auf den Gedan­ ken hin, es mochten auch die korrespondierenden Beg r iff e samtlich in einem analogen Abhangigkeitsverhaltnisse stehen 20 zu denen der Anzahlen und gewisse inhaltsreichere Gedanken vor­ steHen, in welchen die Anzahlen bloBe Bestandteile bilden. Die einfachste Uberlegung scheint dies zu bestatigen. This introductory article presents some subtle and, perhaps, controversial aspects of providing care to adolescents who identify as transgender. I will describe (1) how praise from careproviders can benefit parents who have difficulty accepting the gender identity of their child that was not assigned at birth; (2) how adolescents who identify as transgender may follow the internet advice of peers on how to “con” careproviders; (3) how it may be difficult for careproviders to decide whether to further patients’ felt needs (...) and to protect them, paternalistically, from making an irreversible decision they may later regret; and (4) how careproviders can benefit adolescents by taking the initiative to discuss sex and how to say “no.” I emphasize how careproviders who see these patients, even when they have no special expertise in this area, may be able to enhance patients’ equality in every respect, even when they otherwise might not choose to do so. In this special issue of The Journal of Clinical Ethics, different views on both the ethical desirability of women delivering in hospitals or at home with midwives are discussed. What careproviders, including midwives, should recommend to mothers in regard to the place of giving birth is considered. Emotional concerns likely to be of importance to mothers, fathers, midwives, and doctors are also presented. Finally, possible optimal approaches at the levels of both policy and the bedside are suggested.

Clinicians and ethicists routinely encounter complex ethical dilemmas that seem intractable, which have been described as ethical Gordian knots. How can they best assist patients and surrogate decision makers who are entangled in struggles around the capacity to make life-or-death treatment decisions? In this article I describe unconventional and unorthodox approaches to help slice through these dilemmas.

The author suggests that a “first generation” task in bioethics is to give patients the information they need; a “second generation” task is to do this in the most effective way; and a “third generation” task is to avoid harming patients by imposing value biases. The author discusses ways to pursue this third generation task.
