Provocatively, David Armstrong's properties are supposed to be both universals and spatio-temporal. What does this amount to? I consider four of Armstrong's views, in order of ascending plausibility: (1) the exemplification account, on which universals are exemplified by space-times; (2) the location account, on which universals are located at space-times; (3) the first constituent account, on which spatio-temporal relations are elements of what I call the form of time; and, the true view, (4) the second constituent account, on which universals (...) are spatio-temporal only 'derivatively' by being constituents of states of affairs which are so 'primarily'. The first two accounts are rejected because they entail that space-times must be substantival. In making plausible the second constituent account, I distinguish primitive and derivative spatio-temporality. Something is primitively spatio-temporal when it is at a space-time, or stands in spatio-temporal relations. Something is derivatively spatio-temporal when it is a constituent of something primitively spatio-temporal. (shrink)

Pace Benovsky's ‘Presentism and Persistence,’ presentism is compatible with perdurantism, tropes and bundle-of-universals theories of persisting objects. I demonstrate how the resemblance, causation and precedence relations that tie stages together can be accommodated within an ersatzer presentist framework. The presentist account of these relations is then used to delineate a presentist-friendly account of the inter-temporal composition required for making worms out of stages. The defense of presentist trope theory shows how properties with indexes other than t may be said to (...) exist at t. This involves an account of how times other than t exist at t, and how times may be multiply located at any given time. Benovsky's objection to bundles of universals is shown to assume that a bundle of properties must have the properties of its element properties. (shrink)

Despite having been solved numerous times, the surprise quiz paradox persists in the intellectual imagination as a riddle. This dialogue aims to dispel the fallacies of the paradox in an intuitive way through the causal format of a dialogue. Along the way, two contributions are made to the literature. Even if the student knew there would be a quiz at the end of a quizless Thursday, the fact that the quiz will be a surprise Friday would provide a Gettier-style defeater (...) for his supposed knowledge that he will have a quiz Friday. In addition, pace Sorensen (1988), the dialogue explains why the temporal retention of knowledge is essential to the puzzle and not a mere accident. (shrink)

A partir da oposição entre “sonho literário” e “sonho político”, pretendemos analisar a crítica que Foucault faz à “literatura da peste”, na qual se inclui o conhecido livro de Albert Camus. Ao final, procuramos sinalizar para o fato de que, tomando o caso do Brasil, é pertinente dizer, com Foucault, que as relações entre medicina e política constituem o pano de fundo das formas de normalização instituídas durante a pandemia do covid 19, mas que também, apesar das críticas de Foucault (...) ao sonho literário, não podemos deixar de ver que as transgressões do necessário isolamento social, tem um ar de festa e de êxtase, num jogo permanente com a própria morte. This paper focuses on the major work of Edith Stein, Finite and Eternal Being. It seeks to determine whether her mature philosophical synthesis is correctly viewed as Thomist. It strives to accomplish this by focusing mainly on her treatment of the problem of individuation.

The author of the paper presents some critical opinions (including her own) on Habermas' conception of language and discourse. At the same time she strives to explain the main controversies which arise from Habermas' key categories. For example Habermas seems to compare the structure of society with the structure of language, underlining the importance of common practice of speech acts. But is there still any room for such communicative activity in the modern postindustrial world? And, first of all, must we (...) really concentrate all our efforts on promoting the communicative rationality? The results of universalization principle, as well as the interrelations between communicative action and discourse (both highlighted in the paper) belong to other problems of Habermas' philosophy. The paper discusses weak points or even inconsistencies which can be noticed in these conceptions. Finally the author reflects on Habermas' ideal speech situation and on "the utopia touch" in Habermas' seemingly practical concepts. (shrink)

Partindo da discussão a respeito da pertinência e do uso do termo fisiologia na obra de Nietzsche, este artigo pretende apresentar, nas suas linhas gerais, o alcance desse projeto para a (...) discussão das relações entre arte e verdade, arte e ilusão. Among the more significant developments of the twentieth century, the widespread attention given to 'rights issues' must surely justify ranking it somewhere near the top. Never before has the issue of rights attracted such a wide audience or stirred so much controversy. Until very recently 'rights' were traditionally recognized as attributable only to humans. Today, we increasingly are hearing a call to extend 'rights' to the nonhuman animal and, on occasion, to the environment. In this book, James B. Reichmann, (...) S.J., undertakes an investigation of the metaethical grounds of 'rights' theory, with special focus on the controversial issue of whether creatures other than humans can and should be considered true subjects of 'rights.' He contends that before assigning rights to this or that individual or group, whether human or not, we need to be very clear about what it is we are assigning, to whom, and why. The book argues forcefully that the various recent efforts to build a case supporting animal and environmental 'rights' fail in their quest, and that any such effort resting on a Darwinian evolutionary base is likewise condemned to fail. In furtherance of this claim the author first investigates life phenomena, followed by a detailed comparative study of knowing, communicating and doing, as these are observed in the human and the nonhuman animal. This in turn is followed by an overview of diverse views advanced by contemporary environmental ethicists and animal 'rights' advocates, including Peter Singer, Tom Regan, J. Baird Callicott, Laura Westra, and Don E. Marietta, Jr. Representative though doubtless provocative conclusions drawn from this study include the claims that: (1) Classic Darwinian theory provides no admissable premise from which to derive a theory of inherent, inalienable rights. (2) No satisfactory explanation of the origin of rights and obligation can derive save from within the context of natural law theory. (3) The human person alone unqualifiedly possesses rights. (4) The view that vegetarianism is an ethical mandate is neither compatible with the Christian world view, nor philosophically sound. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: James B. Time passes iff: P and then Q, for any tensed P and Q. Mary sits; and then she stands. The view—dynamic succession—accommodates the intuition that time passes when events change their A-characteristics: my next birthday is 11 months future and then 10 months future and so on. The view implies an intimate connection between passage, persistence, and change. Persistence and change both presuppose passage. The view charts a path between A-theories (invoking past, present, future) and B-theories (invoking succession). A-theories of (...) passage fail to uncover what makes the passage process go (i.e., succession). B-theories negate tense and therefore mistakenly treat succession as a static relation. Genuine succession makes it so that what comes after replaces what came before. (shrink)

The Growing Block Theory of time asserts that temporal reality encompasses all present and past things. The world grows as things come to be present. When something becomes past it does not cease to be, it simply moves away from the growing edge of reality. Thus past things are just like present ones, except not present. But if past things are just as real as present ones, and qualitatively just like them, how can I tell if what is happening is (...) present and not past? It seems everything would look the same to me whether I was past or present. And so I don’t know that I am present. To avoid this intolerable result, I argue on behalf of the Growing Block Theorist that the present does not look the same as the past. Experiences exemplify the property of presentness when they are present, and I can be directly acquainted with that fact. My direct acquaintance enables me to be justified in believing my experiences are present and to know the same. I develop this view and conclude by responding to objections. (shrink)

O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar e analisar a questão do papel dos “intelectuais” a partir de um diálogo entre Foucault e Deleuze, publicado no Brasil com o título de “Os intelectuais e o poder”, no livro Microfísica do poder. A partir deste diálogo, mostramos em que medida Foucault e Deleuze, posteriormente, vão conceber a relação entre a figura do intelectual e ação política, de maneira nem sempre congruente e, muitas vezes, oposta. Trata- se, portanto, de indagar as questões que (...) dizem respeito às relações entre verdade e poder, formas de intervenção na luta política e o deslocamento da ideia clássica de intelectual como aquele que vai falar pelos outros, em nome de outros, por trazer consigo as insígnias de portador do saber verdadeiro e universalizável. Na chamada primeira geração da Teoria Crítica, a de Adorno e Horkheimer, Nietzsche, ao lado de Marx e Freud foi um interlocutor privilegiado. A crítica de Habermas, nome central da segunda geração, separou Nietzsche da Teoria Crítica, ou melhor, atribuiu a Nietzsche parte dos problemas da crítica que a primeira geração dirigiu à razão. Já a terceira geração, da qual Axel Honneth é o nome mais conhecido, volta a problematizar a relação entre Teoria Crítica e Nietzsche, por meio do pensamento (...) de Michel Foucault. Esse artigo visa mostrar alguns aspectos dessa retomada, na qual os nomes de Nietzsche – como um dos precursores – e Foucault – como um continuador – são incluídos no horizonte da Teoria Crítica. O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar nas suas linhas mais gerais alguns aspectos da análise que Foucault fez do cristianismo, com a finalidade de apontar o que há neste de singular. Para isso, vamos centrar nossa atenção nos quatro livros publicados no interior do projeto de uma História da sexualidade, cujos três primeiros volumes foram publicados em 1976 e 1984, enquanto o último volume apenas em 2018. Esta análise, por sua vez, pressupõe a genealogia do sujeito de desejo, que podemos (...) considerar como o último programa de pesquisa de Foucault. Para tal, se faz necessário retomar a comparação feita reiteradamente por Foucault entre a experiência grega dos aphrodisia, a experiência cristã da carne e a experiência moderna da sexualidade. Esse desvio nos facilitará compreender a singularidade do cristianismo ligada não à repressão da sexualidade, mas a uma nova forma de governamentalidade, a do poder pastoral, baseada no “governo das condutas”, no interior das quais o corpo e seus prazeres assume um lugar central. O artigo pretende explorar, a partir de Michel Foucault, a ligação entre biopolítica, neoliberalismo e a chamada guerra às drogas, a fim de tentar esclarecer as motivações econômicas e políticas que fundamentam o tipo de combate às drogas que impera no mundo contemporâneo. O Brasil não está distante desse tipo de política que, apoiada em discursos legitimadores, tais como o discurso médico e mesmo o psicologizante, estabelecem não apenas a partilha entre os que devem viver e os que precisam morrer, (...) como também as condições para justificar toda forma de exclusão e desqualificação das populações periféricas, justificativa que, em última instância, também repercute na formulação das leis. This article intends to run through the appropriation made by Judith Butler about the theme of mourning, and how this concept is modified and mixed in her work, when she works it initially in a debate as an inceptive political category and more radically in its clinical meaning in Psychic Life of Power, until her transition work and the theoretical construction of her ethics and/or political philosophy in Precarious Life, a book in which she will explicitly develop mourning as an (...) ethical-political category and one of the fundamental vectors of her theory. Furthermore, the text intends to present an attempt, still latent, to understand or hypothesize the way Butler makes a dialogue between Psychoanalysis and Politics, in a much less simple way than may appear in the externality of her texts. This study compares the teachings of Thomas Aquinas and John Duns Scotus on the issue of being and individuality. Its primary aim is to contrast Scotus’s individuating principle, haecceitas, with Aquinas’s actualizing principle, esse, attending both to their rather striking similarities as well as to their significant differences. The article’s conclusion is that, while Scotus’s crowning principle, haecceitas, is the unique entity internal to each thing, rendering the nature complete and singular as nature, Aquinas’s crowning principle, esse, actualizes the nature (...) without individualizing it. This is not to imply that Scotus overlooked the importance of a thing’s being, any more than Aquinas overlooked the importance of a being’s singularity. It does mean, however, that the primal integrating focus and the resulting philosophical synthesis of these two seminal thinkers of the Middle Ages did significantly differ. The conclusion of the paper might be stated thus: what most distinguishes their respective philosophies is that, while Scotus’s primary concern was with the existing individual, Aquinas’s was with the existing individual.
