We present two experiments that cast doubt on existing evidence suggesting that it is impossible to suspend belief in a comprehended proposition. In Experiment 1, we found that interrupting the encoding of a statement's veracity decreased memory for the statement's falsity when the false version of the statement was uninformative, but not when the false version was informative. This suggests that statements that are informative when false are not represented as if they were true. In Experiment 2, participants made faster (...) lexical decisions to words implied by preceding statements when they were told that the statements were true than when the veracity of the statements was unknown or when the statements were false. The findings suggest that comprehending a statement may not require believing it, and that it may be possible to suspend belief in comprehended propositions. (shrink)

We study the behaviour of stable types in rosy theories. The main technical result is that a non-þ-forking extension of an unstable type is unstable. We apply this to show that a rosy group with a þ-generic stable type is stable. In the context of super-rosy theories of finite rank we conclude that non-trivial stable types of U þ -rank 1 must arise from definable stable sets.

Generalising Hrushovski's fusion technique we construct the free fusion of two strongly minimal theories T₁, T₂ intersecting in a totally categorical sub-theory T₀. We show that if, e.g., T₀ is the theory of infinite vector spaces over a finite field then the fusion theory Tω exists, is complete and ω-stable of rank ω. We give a detailed geometrical analysis of Tω, proving that if both T₁, T₂ are 1-based then, Tω can be collapsed into a strongly minimal theory, if some (...) additional technical conditions hold—all trivially satisfied if T₀ is the theory of infinite vector spaces over a finite field Fq. This article addresses the question raised by the Anthropocene of rethinking the concept of autonomy which, in the conditions of the new geological epoch, is subject to a crisis of legitimation. It explores the ‘strong hypothesis’ according to which nature is a necessary condition of our qualitative experience of the world and a constitutive relation of autonomy defined as the self-realisation of individual identity. With this aim in mind, the article attempts to rethink the concept of recognition in order to (...) conceive a recognising attitude of nature in the form of love of nature as a form of adequate recognition. Rethinking recognition can serve as foundation of an ‘objective’ theory of autonomy, that is, a theory that explains how nature can be defined as a condition and constitutive relation of autonomy. The article, therefore, proposes to reformulate the concept of autonomy as the self-realisation of an ecological or environmental identity in the form of the self-realisation of an ecological ethos, that is, an attitude of respect and care for nature. This enquiry, ultimately, is a contribution to the task of rethinking the basis of our conceptions of autonomy and freedom in the Anthropocene, so that the idea of autonomy can legitimately constitute the central value of the social transformation that is needed to face the ecological crisis. Partiendo de los desarrollos de Hegel sobre el derecho de propiedad de la persona sobre su cuerpo, este artículo intenta esclarecer ciertos límites para su ejercicio e hipotetizar argumentos para defender derechos subjetivos que involucran al cuerpo. En primer lugar, se aborda el concepto hegeliano de persona. La autorreferencia del yo y el reconocimiento intersubjetivo son dos elementos claves para su configuración. En segundo, se presenta el enfoque hegeliano de los derechos de propiedad. Se explica (a) por qué la propiedad (...) privada es una institución jurídica necesaria, (b) qué relación establece la persona con su cuerpo y (c) cuáles son los límites en el ejercicio de los derechos sobre el cuerpo. Finalmente, se examinan las tesis hegelianas centrándose en cuestiones contemporáneas e hipotetizando argumentos para rechazar el derecho a la venta de órganos y defender el derecho al aborto y a la reasignación de sexo. We construct a strongly minimal set which is not a finite cover of one with DMP. We also show that for a strongly minimal theory T, generic automorphisms exist iff T has DMP, thus proving a conjecture of Kikyo and Pillay.

Despite a great deal of feminist work that has highlighted its social construction, menstruation seems a self-evidently “natural” bodily process. Yet, how menstruation is defined or what “counts” as menstruation is rarely questioned. Examining menstruation alongside technologies that alter it highlights these definitional questions. In this article, I examine menstrual suppression through an analysis of medical journal articles and FDA advisory committee transcripts, paired with websites used to market menstrual suppression to consumers. Across these contexts, new definitions of menstruation converged (...) on a distinction between bleeding that occurs when women are taking hormonal birth control and when they are not. The case of menstrual suppression birth control pills provides an opportunity to study the work of redefining a biological process understood as quintessentially natural and deeply significant for gendered embodiment, as well as a challenge to consider both the social and material construction of gendered bodies. The use of batteries became essential in our daily life in electronic devices, electric vehicles and energy storage systems in general terms. As they play a key role in many devices, their design and implementation must follow a thorough test process to check their features at different operating points. In this circumstance, the appearance of any kind of deviation from the expected operation must be detected. This research deals with real data registered during the testing phase of a lithium iron (...) phosphate—LiFePO4—battery. The process is divided into four different working points, alternating charging, discharging and resting periods. This work proposes a hybrid classifier, based on one-class techniques, whose aim is to detect anomalous situations during the battery test. The faults are created by modifying the measured cell temperature a slight ratio from their real value. A detailed analysis of each technique performance is presented. The average performance of the chosen classifier presents successful results. (shrink)

A large part of technological advances, especially in the field of industry, have been focused on the optimization of productive processes. However, the detection of anomalies has turned out to be a great challenge in fields like industry, medicine or stock markets. The present work addresses anomaly detection on a control level plant. We propose the application of different intelligent techniques, which allow to obtain one-class classifiers using real data taken from the correct plant operation. We explore the relationship between evidence and knowledge when knowledge is described by a standard partition over a finite state space, and evidence is represented by a state-dependent collection of finite sets of messages. When the collection is measurable with respect to the partition, there is evidence for an event only if the event is self-evident—i.e., known at every one of its states. Thus, an event is commonly known in and only if there is _mutual_ evidence that implies that the (...) event has occurred, and all knowledge can be proved only when the agent is informed about the state or knows nothing. En este artículo exploro algunos de los tópicos vinculados tradicionalmente con el problema de la normatividad del derecho: autonomía, racionalidad, relevancia práctica, razones para la acción y autoridad. Trataré de construir un marco conceptual que refleje la complejidad teórica del problema y las posiciones filosóficas desde los cuales puede ser abordado. Particularmente, me centraré en el análisis de las asunciones filosóficas relacionadas con ciertas posturas y la revisión de su coherencia mutua.

We show that any structure of finite Morley Rank having the definable multiplicity property has a rank and multiplicity preserving interpretation in a strongly minimal set. In particular, every totally categorical theory admits such an interpretation. We also show that a slightly weaker version of the DMP is necessary for a structure of finite rank to have a strongly minimal expansion. In this paper I aim to think about a set of different issues in relation to Marx’s philosophy on the light of the experience of Paris Commune. More specifically, I would like to point out that Marx’s experience facing the Commune could be constituted as a revealing indicator of some of the most significant outlines of his philosophy. Firstly, I am proposing an analysis of the letter from Marx to Ruge in Kreuznach with the purpose of thinking over young Marx’s (...) revolution idea by identifying two critical aspects that modify and project it transformed towards the Commune. In second place, I present a re-reading of The Civil War in France crossed by an internal disjunction between the scientific, political and philosophical words that are present in Marx, but that resist to be reappropriated in a single speech. Nowadays, the quality standards of higher education institutions pay special attention to the performance and evaluation of the students. Then, having a complete academic record of each student, such as number of attempts, average grade and so on, plays a key role. In this context, the existence of missing data, which can happen for different reasons, leads to affect adversely interesting future analysis. Therefore, the use of imputation techniques is presented as a helpful tool to estimate the value of missing (...) data. This work deals with the academic records of engineering students, in which imputation techniques are applied. More specifically, it is assessed and compared to the performance of the multivariate imputation by chained equations methodology, the adaptive assignation algorithm based on multivariate adaptive regression splines and a hybridization based on self-organisation maps with Mahalanobis distances and AAA algorithm. The results show that proposed methods obtain successfully results regardless the number of missing values, in general terms. (shrink)

According to Husserl, the mathematization of the lifeworld involves reducing it, as object of knowledge, to what is measurable, as well as excluding other forms of knowledge of it. This has important implications in relation to the modern conception of rationality, and, significantly, of practical rationality. More precisely, it issues in an impoverishment of the notion of reason. This article examines the idea that the process of commodification associated with the consolidation and expansion of capitalism has motivated another aspect of (...) the mathematization of nature to which Husserl alludes: the mathematization of value. Born from capitalist economy and from practical attitudes, this mathematization of value is a tendency to reduce all value to use value. In such context, this article offers a phenomenological reflection on the crisis of modern rationality, especially in relation to the difficulty to undertake collective actions that follow logics that are different from that of the accumulation of capital, based on the examination of this other aspect of the mathematization of the lifeworld. The objective structured clinical examination is a method for assessment clinical competencies and skills. However, there is a need to improve its design in psychology programs. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of the different scenario's presentation order with different complexity/difficulty on the autonomic stress response of undergraduate students undergoing a Psychology OSCE. A total of 32 students of Psychology Bachelor's Degree were randomly selected and assigned to two OSCE scenarios of different complexity. While undergoing the (...) scenarios, participants heart rate variability was analyzed as an indicator of participant's stress autonomic response. Results indicate that the order of presentation of different complexity/difficulty scenarios affects the autonomic stress response of undergraduate Psychology students undergoing an OSCE. Students who underwent the high-complexity scenario first, reported significantly higher autonomic stress response than students who began the OSCE with the low-complexity scenario. Highly complex or difficult scenarios require good executive functions or cognitive control, very sensitive to autonomic stress responses. Therefore, OSCE design will benefit from placing easy scenarios first. (shrink)

Si algo así ocurriere, se explicaría porque el agente ignoraba que estaba haciendo un mal. However, on many occasions Aristotle gives part of reason to the Socratic position. The aim of this work is twofold: to review a specific aspect of the way in which Aristotle may have understood Socratic intellectualism specially regarding someone who is actually knowing that what he or she is aboutto do is wrong; to review why, in that specific aspect, Aristotle's own position is not, as is often said, so distant from the Socratic. Es harto conocido el análisis aristotélico de las distintas clases de acción humana en función de su voluntariedad e involuntariedad en Ética nicomaquea III, 1. Algo que suele llamar la atención de los especialistas es la inclusión de las acciones emocionales entre las voluntarias. En el presente trabajo intentaré dar cuenta de las razones para dicha inclusión, argumentando que surgen del marco racional que orienta la acción emocional, marco en función del cual Aristóteles puede catalogarlas como voluntarias. The Aristotelian analysis (...) of the different kinds of human action according to their voluntariness and involuntariness in Nicomachean Ethics III, 1 is well known. Something that usually draws the attention of specialists is the inclusion of emotional actions among the voluntary ones. In this paper I will try to show the reasons for such inclusion, arguing that they arise from the rational framework that guides emotional action, a framework based on which Aristotle can classify them as voluntary. Las redes sociales contribuyen a la expansión del espacio biográfico y a la ampliación de la esfera de las intimidades públicas. Distintas personas que padecen depresión, un diagnóstico históricamente portador de estigmas que conduce a la vergüenza y al ocultamiento de esta condición, emplean las tecnologías digitales para compartir estas experiencias íntimas a un extenso público. Este artículo indaga cuáles son las finalidades de salir del armario de la depresión en las redes sociales. El objetivo es describir y analizar narrativas (...) biográficas de personas que padecen y/o padecieron depresión y residen en Argentina. Concretamente, aborda el repertorio de motivaciones e intereses de hacer públicas experiencias consideradas íntimas por parte de figuras mediáticas, YouTubers y personas sin un perfil público en videos de YouTube. A partir del método biográfico en su vertiente de relatos de vida, se analiza un corpus de 37 videos audiovisuales disponibles en YouTube desde 2018 hasta 2024. En base a estos documentos biográficos, se elaboran categorías que distinguen una pluralidad de motivaciones e intereses asociados a publicar las experiencias personales de depresión. Dentro de esta multiplicidad de formas, que son complementarias, identificamos un arco que comprende desde la transformación del propio sujeto, pasando por formas de ayudar y aconsejar a otras personas, hasta comunitarizar el sufrimiento. Este artículo busca realizar una contribución sociológica al estudio de las transformaciones de las intimidades públicas, con especial énfasis en las narrativas contemporáneas sobre experiencias de depresión en internet. The present study examines the representation of Arabic and Hebrew in Covarrubias’s Tesoro de la lengua castellana o española from a comparative perspective. Analyzing the lexicographer’s ideological and meta-linguistic discourse, I reconstruct his postulates regarding the respective histories of Arabic and Hebrew, their interrelationship, and place in the history of Spanish. In light of these postulates, and taking into account the lexicographer’s access to knowledge, sources, and informants, I examine some of his etymological practices, focusing on his attempts to use (...) grammatical and lexical knowledge of Hebrew to illuminate Arabic etymologies of Spanish words. Combining the ideological and technical levels of the text, I reflect on the interplay of knowledge and ignorance in Covarrubias’s treatment of Semitic languages. (shrink)

In many coevolutionary systems members of one party select members of a second party based on quality differences existing among members of the latter (e.g., predators and prey, pollinators and flowers, etc.). We examined the fate of characters that increase (amplifiers) or decrease (attenuators) the perceived amplitude of differences in the quality upon which choice of the selecting party is based. We found that the evolution of such characters depends on (i) the relationship between the cost of the character and (...) the relative benefit it gives to the high quality individuals (if an amplifier) or low quality individuals (if an attenuator), and (ii) the frequency, among members of the selected party, of the quality sought by the selecting party. Automatic control of physiological variables is one of the most active areas in biomedical engineering. This paper is centered in the prediction of the analgesic variables evolution in patients undergoing surgery. The proposal is based on the use of hybrid intelligent modelling methods. The study considers the Analgesia Nociception Index to assess the pain in the patient and remifentanil as intravenous analgesic. The model proposed is able to make a one-step-ahead prediction of the remifentanil dose corresponding to the current state (...) of the patient. The input information is the previous remifentanil dose, the ANI variable and the electromyogram signal. Modelling techniques used are Artificial Neural Networks and Support Vector machines for Regression combined with clustering methods. Both training and validation were done with a real dataset from different patients. Results obtained show the potential of this methodology to calculate the drug dose corresponding to a given analgesic state of the patient. (shrink)

Se expondrá el modo en que en la música serial, a pesar de su progresismo, que el filósofo medía por el trato con la modernidad radical representada por la escuela vienesa de Schönberg, resonaban elementos que neutralizaban las fuerzas productivas de la nueva (...) música. El artículo indaga en la publicación Kokena, revista creada por una organización indígena a fines de la década de 1970. El trabajo se interroga sobre el vínculo entre una publicación de indios e indias, y un territorio que se definía (y define) sin población indígena. Para reflexionar en torno a esa relación, se reconstruye el contexto político-social en que surge la revista y se rastrean los antecedentes etnopolíticos urbanos. Además, se precisan las características y acciones del Centro Kolla (Cenko), encargado (...) de publicar la Kokena, y del indianismo, marco ideológico que reivindicó la organización. Se analizan dos ejemplares de la revista, en los que se busca precisar similitudes y diferencias. Las publicaciones permiten comprender particularidades de la organización y reflexionar sobre la etnicidad de un conjunto de individuos en la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires (CABA). La Kokena fue parte de un conjunto de estrategias que le permitieron a un grupo de personas configurar sus identificaciones y habitar una ciudad que los negaba e invisibilizaba. De esta forma, en y desde la ciudad, kollas, indígenas y porteños/as construyeron una revista india. (shrink)
