De manière remarquablement constante, la question de l'éducation a été une préoccupation majeure du mouvement anarchiste tout au long de son histoire. Malheureusement, cet héritage demeure en général méconnu, si ce n'est ignoré. Une des ambitions de cette anthologie, qui réunit des textes importants de penseurs et de praticiens anarchistes d'horizons divers, est précisément de nous permettre de redécouvrir la riche tradition dans le domaine de l'éducation de ce courant politico-philosophique. Qu'est-ce que l'éducation? Sur quels plans et pour quelles raisons (...) l'éducation, telle que généralement pratiquée, est-elle déficiente? Comment devrait-on s'y prendre pour former des êtres libres? À ces questions et à de nombreuses autres semblables, des théoriciens ont tenté de répondre, tandis que des praticiens anarchistes se sont efforcés de mettre en oeuvre leur idéal d'une éducation réellement émancipatrice. La présente anthologie, qui comprend deux tomes, réunit les principaux écrits consacrés à l'éducation de ces théoriciens et praticiens anarchistes, des écrits trop peu connus et souvent difficilement accessibles. On retrouve dans ce premier tome, qui couvre les années 1793 à 1918, des textes de Michel Bakounine, Sébastien Faure, Francesco Ferrer, William Godwin, Pierre Kropotkine, Fernand Pelloutier, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, Paul Robin et Max Stirner. Ils mettent en lumière une riche et toujours inspirante tradition de pensée, de militantisme et de réalisations concrètes. (shrink)

This book explores the possible relations between Western types of rationality and Buddhism. It also examines some cliche;s about Buddhism and questions the old antinomies of Western culture (“faith and reason,” or “idealism and materialism”). The use of the Buddhist notion of the Two Truths as a hermeneutic device leads to a double or multiple exposure that will call into question our mental habits and force us to ask questions differently, to think “in a new key.” Double Exposure is somewhat (...) of an oddity. Written by a specialist for nonspecialists, it is not a book of vulgarization. Although it aims at a better integration of Western and Buddhist thought, it is not an exercise in comparative philosophy or religion. It is neither a contribution to Buddhist scholarship in the narrow sense, nor a contribution to some vague Western “spirituality.” Cutting across traditional disciplines and blurring established genres, it provides a leisurely but deeply insightful stroll through philosophical and literary texts, dreams, poetry, and paradoxes. Ante la consideración general de que el principio verum/factum es una fórmula de implicación revolucionaria sólo con Vico, se pretende examinar la tesis del Quod Nihil Scitur de F. Sánchez, con objeto de mostrar que, lejos de ser una idea marginal e incidental, el principio se encuentra en la base de la teoría epistemológica del filósofo ibérico. De hecho, el presente trabajo intenta demostrar la formulación viquiana como una respuesta a la crisis escéptica que surgía de la teoría del concimiento (...) de Sánchez. Aceptando la premisa básica del escepticismo, Vico puso fin a la crisis escéptica.As to the general view of the verum/factum principle as a revolutionary formula of implication embodied in Vico’s Philosophy, this paper aims to examine the main thesis of F. Sánchez’s Quod Nihil Scitur in order to show that the principle, far from being a casual or incidental idea, lies on the bottom of his epistemological theory. In fact, this paper intends to present the vichian formula as a response to the esceptical crisis which came out from Sánchez’s very own theory of knowledge. Once the basic assumption of scepticism has been retorted, Vico brought to an end the sceptical crisis. (shrink)

A contribution to the sixth installment of the Common Knowledge symposium “Apology for Quietism,” this article addresses a) the extent to which the familiar term “Buddhist quietism” is legitimate, b) the use of the term by Jesuit missionaries in Asia at the time that Catholic quietism was briefly flourishing in Europe, and c) the use of the term in the European philosophical controversy over Spinozism. Faure argues that, in most cases, the European critique of Buddhism was aimed at European (...) enemies. Chan Buddhism in China and Zen in Japan came to be associated with nihilism as well as quietism, and the association proved resilient down into the twentieth century, but the Jesuit critique has a peculiar provenance. The Jesuits in China borrowed arguments against Buddhism from neo-Confucianist allies, yet the Confucian critique of Buddhism was itself indebted to arguments that had been directed by Buddhist schools against one another. Certain Chan schools had accused other Chan schools of quietism and nihilism, and Western scholars even in the later twentieth century have taken sides in these disputes as well. However, Faure argues, the “no-thought” of Chan is not the “blank slate” of Christian quietism, on which God engraves his will and blessings. Nor does Buddhist quietism lead to the extasis of mystical union. Moreover, Buddhism was perceived by East Asian rulers mainly as an ideological weapon and only secondarily as a soteriological doctrine. Indeed “warrior monks” in Japan formed bands that attacked all who threatened their interests, and the country could not be unified under Tokugawa rule until this activist Buddhism was quelled. The article concludes with an expression of admiration for quietism and a wish that there might be more of it in Buddhism now. (shrink)

Prise en un sens englobant, la notion d’affordance permet de penser en première approximation notre rapport perceptuel aux objets et surtout à ce que nous faisons du dit rapport comme sujets. Transférer cette notion psychologique à l’observation des données langagières paraît d’autant plus bienvenu qu’elle porte sur le rapport à l’activité de signifiance, au sens de Gibson. Toutefois, outre les relectures successives qui ont contribué à en ajuster l’application à l’émergence aux conventions culturelles, ou en tant que disposition à agir, (...) certaines approches liées à la phénoménologie – ethnométhodologiques et énactivistes, en particulier – ont pu en discuter l’opérativité. Pour questionner sous sa robustesse la précision de ce concept tel qu’on peut en comprendre la manifestation en discours et en interaction, on posera le caractère transitoire de sa valeur opératoire avant d’observer comment il peut croiser diverses catégories praxéologiques. Une étude de cas d’utilisation d’artefacts pour visualiser et communiquer servira de support à la réflexion. (shrink)

Gregory Bateson’s career from anthropologist, through his development of cybernetics and systems theory, to developing ideas around ‘the sacred’, has parallels with Roy Bhaskar’s intellectual journey. This paper proposes that as well as Bateson’s theory of cybernetics and systemic thought making a contribution to basic and dialectic critical realism, his final and posthumously published Angels Fear: Towards and Epistemology of the Sacred adds to our understanding of Bhaskar’s metaReality. Similarities between the development of Bateson’s work from 1936 to 1987 and (...) Bhaskar’s work from 1975 to 2016 enable the development of theory that adds to both of their respective appreciations of metaReality and the sacred. Thus, by starting a conversation between Bateson and Bhaskar, we can develop a higher order understanding of the world than proposed by Bhaskar’s metaReality alone. (shrink)

Le deuxième défi concerne les joutes quotidiennes qui mettent aux prises les différents acteurs de la décentralisation pour trouver concrètement des solutions aux problèmes de logement, de déplacement, d'éducation, de sécurité ou d'emploi. En dos ensayos el autor aborda las afinidades entre Vico y los judíos: Vico y los hebreos, al defender sus respectivas tradiciones del embate del racionalismo secular, pudieron apreciar los métodos y los valores desarrollados en ellas, para aplicarlos en el seno de su propia interpretación. El primer artículo, tras examinar las concepciones de Voltaire y Vico sobre el hombre y la historia y sus influencias sobre el judío en la sociedad contemporánea, y antes de ofrecer algunas notas acerca de (...) la similitud entre la tradición hebrea y la romana, muestra el caso relevante de ciertos pensadores sefardíes, quienes en su afán de reivindicación de su propia tradición espiritual, percibieron el significado de las contribuciones de Vico en cuanto humanista religioso y aplicaron algunas de sus ideas para afrontar los retos del racionalismo secular. El segundo artículo contiene algunas observaciones sobre Vico y la tradición rabínica, con el fin de explicar cómo defienden la unicidad del "logos" frente a la escisión occidental entre filosofía y retórica: para el judío, el humanismo religioso y el pluralismo cultural viquianos, vinculados por su intento de recuperar el verdadero sentido de la tradición romana, que fue desplazada en favor de la griega, representaba la primera alternativa moderna al idealismo-racionalismo griego y a fortiori y a las dificultades en que lo envolvían la epistemología cartesiana y el racionalismo secular de la llustración. The meaning and grammatical status of ‘a notional’ in the schema for critical discourse analysis (CDA) from Bhaskar’s posthumously published Enlightened Common Sense (2016) is somewhat ambiguous. An ambiguity that has persisted through a subsequent development of the schema. Following the publication of Bhaskar’s original manuscript, it can now be seen that erroneous grammatical changes were made to the manuscript during the publication process. The original version provides a more coherent schema for CDA. This paper discusses the implications of the (...) original version coming to light. This shows that Bhaskar created a more coherent schema for CDA than the published version indicated. Clarifying the meaning and grammatical status of ‘a notional’ in Bhaskar’s schema for CDA and a schema that was subsequently derived from it is an important corrective for future critical realist critical discourse analysts. Le sens et la fonction de la Déclaration des droits de l’homme et du citoyen furent l’objet de longues et nombreuses controverses. Parmi les différentes approches du texte, juridiques ou sociologiques, nous retiendrons la méthode conçue à propos de Ténoncé performatif par le philosophe anglais J. L. Austin, car elle nous permet de découvrir sur quelles procédures conventionnelles s’appuie la bonne réception de la Déclaration, à quelles règles de conduite existantes, les constituants ont-ils fait appel. Ces conventions, en l’occurrence l’acte (...) de serment et de promesse, apparaissent dans le texte à l’état d’indices, cette dimension étant masquée par l’intensité de la rupture que la Déclaration instaure au plan politique. Ce décodage des intentions des constituants nécessite le recours à une analyse des contextes: contexte socio-historique immédiat et environnement conceptuel.The meaning and the function of the Declaration of the rights of Men and Citizen has been discussed for a long time. We prefer, among different lectures of the text, the method contrived for an explanation of performative utterances, by the english philosopher J. L. Austin: it can enable us to discover on what convention a good reception of the Declaration is based, what rules of conducts the " constituants " have choosed. These conventions - oath and promise - appear in the text as mere indications. The intensity of the political rupture hide them. To decode the " constituante " intentions, a contextual analysis is needed, that is both immediate socio-historical context and conceptual context. (shrink)

This paper deals with the claims of industrial operators and their insurers that expanding liability is being experienced in many legal systems in Europe and will lead to the uninsurability of certain risks. In this paper we address some aspects of this insurability problem by trying to identify precisely what might make an expanding liability risk uninsurable. Then we examine whether there are remedies for expanding liability that might result in certain risks remaining insurable. In that respect we shall consider (...) alternative compensation systems, financial caps, differentiation of risks, and the application of insurance policies over time, more specifically related to so-called ‘long-tail’ risks. Although each of these aspects might merit a separate paper, we prefer to discuss them in an integrated way by providing a balanced answer to current questions concerning the insurability of modem industrial hazards. ABSTRACTThis paper explores the impacts of the PREVENT Counter-Terrorism Strategy. The conclusion is reached that violence may be being promoted rather than prevented by government attempts to counter ‘radicalisation’ and ‘extremism’. The motivation for this paper is the author's experience of the PREVENT Counter-Terrorism Strategy in a school in east London; and its main recommendation is that counter-extremism strategies can and should be contested. This conclusion, and the explanation for it, is reached by using a critical realist approach to Critical (...) Discourse Analysis, supported by the framework of the semiotic triangle in the context of Bhaskar's transformational model of social activity. This brings in a time dimension that, it is argued, has previously been neglected in critical realist versions of Critical Discourse Analysis. (shrink)

Peter Strawson makes a crucial distinction between reactive attitudes and the objective attitude. Reactive attitudes such as gratefulness, anger and indignation imply that we take each other seriously as responsible agents. The objective attitude implies that we stop taking each other seriously. Strawson argues that the objective attitude is not merely psychologically difficult: it is inconceivable that we would systematically refrain from taking each other seriously and stop discussing with each other or blaming ourselves or others. Strawson, however, only discusses (...) the reactive attitudes from a general point of view. In this paper, we argue that the reactive attitudes of remorse and moral indignation are forms of ”symbolic restoration’. Retributive punishment should also be interpreted from this perspective. Consequently, our concern with moral blame cannot be understood independently from a concern with the harm that has occurred. Our attitude to the outcome determines our attitude to the agent. The concern with the mental state is secondary: it is structured by its place within the practice of symbolic restoration. (shrink)

Alors que toutes les langues romanes connaissent les deux types de topicalisation à gauche : le topique suspendu (HT, dans les propositions principales) et la dislocation gauche (LD, dans les propositions principales et les subordonnées), quelques dialectes occitans (et peut-être quelques dialectes italiens) se distinguent en présentant aussi un topique suspendu enchâssé. Cet article met en évidence les difficultés soulevées par les analyses antérieures, notamment celle de Sauzet (1989) qui suppose qu’un rôle prédicatif spécifique légitime ce type de topique et (...) celle de Lahne (2005) qui postule que le topique n’est pas enchâssé. Nous montrons que, en Occitan, la tête fonctionnelle la plus à gauche (FORCE° de Rizzi 1997) porte un trait (déclaratif) fort qui attire le DP topicalisé dans la périphérie gauche de la proposition. La force de ce trait est ainsi paramétrée, ce qui permet de faire des prédictions typologiques intéressantes. (shrink)

The Dynamic of the Avant-garde Group around Unu Literary Magazine. Going through the history of Unu literary magazine, the article describes the dynamic relationship of its group members taking into account their artistic and cultural-political stance. The evolution of the group towards a radical approach and its ideology is grasped on taking on two study cases: the Contimporanul– unu debate and the relationship carried among the group’s members. The purpose of the study is to point to how the group’s ideology (...) had an impact on its progress and dynamic constitution. Moreover, finally, the study indicates how the internal and exterior pressure led to the magazine’s dissolution. (shrink)

The Jewish Question in the Pages of Contimporanul. It is my interest to investigate how one of the Romanian leading interwar avant-garde magazines, Contimporanul (1922-1932), tackled the Jewish question. In this respect, I will consider the various standpoints the contributors took on the matter, presenting it in all its facets and complexity, as both a political and a cultural phenomenon. The analysis of the numerous articles covering the Jewish question, its causes and consequences, is meant to illustrate the sensibility Contimporanul (...) demonstrates in regard to the Jewish question. Finally, I will conclude that, as in all matters covered, the magazines’ ideological position is democratic – For its contributors’ main claim is that the young Romanian state should prove itself to be united, modern, democratic based on the principles of integration and plurality, and not a nation-state based on ethnic and religious discrimination. Les temporalités journalistiques connaissent-elles des ordres et des crises? Le cas de l’Unité populaire au Chili montre que les routines pratiques et les habitudes discursives du journalisme sont historiquement situées et connaissent des métamorphoses. Ces transformations s’appuient sur les normes en vigueur, mais font émerger une autre logique temporelle qui prend peu à peu le dessus. Dans le cas chilien, la temporalité de la mise à l’agenda et la figure du gatekeeper sont de plus en plus contestées par l’événementialisation politique (...) et l’urgence médiatique. La sélection et la hiérarchisation des nouvelles ne disparaissent pas, mais elles s’opèrent dans un autre but. Elles laissent la place à la temporalité de la fluidité, par laquelle les journalistes doivent nourrir un flux de nouvelles plus étendu et accéléré. La réactivité se redéfinit alors. L’Unité populaire, ce sont donc les temps agités où se métamorphose, au Chili, la temporalité de la mise à l’agenda. Et tout l’intérêt de ce cas réside dans le décalage historique entre ces métamorphoses journalistiques et la succession des régimes politiques puisque la temporalité de la fluidité émerge durant le gouvernement démocratique d’Allende et se consolide sous le régime autoritaire de Pinochet. Este ensayo propone un esbozo de análisis temporal de un momento político relevante en la historia mundial del siglo XX, la Unidad Popular chilena (1970-973). Para ello, se hace una revisión de una parte de la literatura secundaria sobre esta experiencia, a partir de dos conceptos forjados que hemos propuesto para indagar la politicidad del tiempo: batallas cronopolíticas y momentum. Este último es entendido como la dinámica de un tempo social donde se puede actuar, ya sea en su capacidad de (...) mantenerse en la duración u orientar cambios a través de un impulso. Se concluye que el proyecto de la Unidad Popular buscó acelerar el momentum expansivo de esta fase de la historia chilena, lo que provocó discronías y desinscronías que obligaron a la contraofensiva reaccionaria a romper con este momentum. Leftist Critique or Fight for Democracy? Contimporanul Covering the Trial from Dealul Spirii. The general knowledge about the political dimension of the Romanian historical avant-garde places the groups on the left of the political spectrum. However, there is little work on what this means precisely when it comes to the concrete historical situations. It may well be that Contimporanul, the main press organ of the avant-garde supported a political agenda of socialist origin, but what does it mean specifically? In order (...) to give a complete historical-intellectual picture of the Romanian avant-garde, specifically of Contimporanul, one must also account for the first couple of years of its appearance, when it published a large number of political opinion articles, written mainly by the same authors that would become central for the artistic movement as well. We aim to fill this gap in the scholar writings by giving a detailed account of the reactions found in the pages of Contimporanul related to the political events of that time, notably those that involved the socialist movement. The case in point is the Trial of Dealul Spirii and the alleged political assassinations against socialist leaders committed or condoned by the state authorities. The overall image of the political ideology of Contimporanul from those years shows rather a marked democratic attitude towards the events, and a great deal of journalistic objectivity behind the attacks against the liberal establishment. Il y a un impensé dans les analyses de l’action publique locale : la question des passions territoriales qui la nourrissent n’apparaît jamais au rang de critère déterminant. Pourtant, les conseils municipaux et les assemblées intercommunales sont un théâtre privilégié où s’expriment émois, désirs et déchirements. Cette charge émotionnelle est peu prise en compte. Les analyses sont centrées sur la façon dont les leaders exercent leur « métier » d’élu local en jouant des émotions et les instrumentalisant pour asseoir leur (...) pouvoir. Dans cet article, l’auteur a souhaité faire un pas de côté en retournant le miroir et en décryptant cette densité émotionnelle à partir du ressenti des élus. (shrink)

Analyse du rapport entre la conception de l'individu et celle de l'espace résultant de l'élaboration d'une "schizo-analyse" comme critique de la psychanalyse classique. A travers l'étude de cette conception originale de la spatialité inspirée de la phénoménologie, l'article révèle la difficulté, pour Deleuze et Guattari, d'une réinterprétation de l'individu, à partir du phénomène central du corps, qui ne soit pas transcendantale.
