„Krumme Touren“ in der Wirtschaft werden in der aktuellen Debatte oft bemängelt. Doch wer zieht die Grenzlinie zwischen legitimem und illegitimem Verhalten von Unternehmern und Firmen? Diese Fragestellung verfolgen die Autoren des Bandes anhand von europäischen Beispielen aus dem 19. und 20. Jahrhundert. Dabei zeigt sich, dass unternehmerische Handlungsnormen weder konstant noch unumstritten waren. Die Beiträge richten den Blick auf öffentliche Kritik und Skandale, Gerichtsprozesse, unternehmerische Selbstregulierung und staatliche Maßnahmen. Age‐related and cancer‐related epigenomic modifications have been associated with enhanced cell‐to‐cell gene expression variability that characterizes increased cellular stochasticity. Since gene expression variability appears to be highly reduced by—and epigenetic and phenotypic stability acquired through—direct or long‐range cellular interactions during cell differentiation, we propose a common origin for aging and cancer in the failure to control cellular stochasticity by cell–cell interactions. Tissue‐disruption‐induced cellular stochasticity associated with epigenetic drift would be at the origin of organ dysfunction because of an increase in (...) phenotypic variation among cells, ultimately leading to cell death and organ failure through a loss of coordination in cellular functions, and eventually to cancerization. We propose mechanistic research perspectives to corroborate this hypothesis and explore its evolutionary consequences, highlighting a positive correlation between the median age of mass loss onset (a proxy for the onset of organ aging) and the median age at cancer diagnosis. The present paper unravels ontological and normative conditions of personhood for the purpose of critiquing ‘Cognitivist Views’. Such views have attracted much attention and affirmation by presenting the ontology of personhood in terms of higher-order cognition on the basis of which normative practices are explained and justified. However, these normative conditions are invoked to establish the alleged ontology in the first place. When we want to know what kind of entity has full moral status, it is tempting to establish an (...) ontology that fits our moral intuitions about who should qualify for such unique normative standing. But this approach conflates personhood’s ontology and normativity insofar as it stresses the primacy of the former while implicitly presupposing the latter; it thereby suffers from a ‘Normative Fallacy’ by inferring from ‘ought’ to ‘is’. Following my critique of Cognitivism, I sketch an alternative conception, contending that, whereas the Cognitivist ontology of personhood presupposes the normative, a social ontology is constituted by it. In due consideration of evidence from developmental psychology, the social embeddedness of persons—manifested in the ability of taking a ‘second-person stance’—is identified as a key feature of personhood that precedes higher-order cognition, and is directly linked to basic normative concerns. In philosophy, the criteria for personhood (PH) at a specific point in time (synchronic), and the necessary and sufficient conditions of personal identity (PI) over time (diachronic) are traditionally separated. Hence, the transition between both timescales of a person's life remains largely unclear. Personal habits reflect a decision-making (DM) process that binds together synchronic and diachronic timescales. Despite the fact that the actualization of habits takes place synchronically, they presuppose, for the possibility of their generation, time in a diachronic sense. (...) The acquisition of habits therefore rests upon PI over time; that is, the temporal extension of personal decisions is the necessary condition for the possible development of habits. Conceptually, habits can thus be seen as a bridge between synchronic and diachronic timescales of a person's life. In order to investigate the empirical mediation of this temporal linkage, we draw upon the neuronal mechanisms underlying DM; in particular on the distinction between internally and externally guided DM. Externally guided DM relies on external criteria at a specific point in time (synchronic); on a neural level, this has been associated with lateral frontal and parietal brain regions. In contrast, internally guided DM is based on the person's own preferences that involve a more longitudinal and thus diachronic timescale, which has been associated with the brain's intrinsic activity. Habits can be considered to reflect a balance between internally and externally guided DM, which implicates a particular temporal balance between diachronic and synchronic elements, thus linking two different timescales. Based on such evidence, we suggest a habit-based neurophilosophical approach of PH and PI by focusing on the empirically-based linkage between the synchronic and diachronic elements of habits. By doing so, we propose to link together what philosophically has been described and analyzed separately as PH and PI. (shrink)

According to Thagard and Stewart :1–33, 2011), creativity results from the combination of neural representations, and combination results from convolution, an operation on vectors defined in the holographic reduced representation framework. They use these ideas to understand creativity as it occurs in many domains, and in particular in science. We argue that, because of its algebraic properties, convolution alone is ill-suited to the role proposed by Thagard and Stewart. The semantic pointer concept allows us to see how we can apply (...) the full range of HRR operations while keeping the modal representations so central to Thagard and Stewart’s theory. By adding another combination operation and using semantic pointers as the combinatorial basis, this modified version overcomes the limitations of the original theory and perhaps helps us explain aspects of creativity not covered by the original theory. While a priori reasons cast doubts on the use of HRR operations with modal representations :5039–5054, 1987) such as semantic pointers, recent models point in the other direction, allowing us to be optimistic about the success of the revised version. Normals display selective deficits in morphology and syntax under adverse processing conditions. Digit loads do not impair processing of passives and object relatives but do impair processing of grammatical morphemes. Perceptual degradation and temporal compression selectively impair several aspects of grammar, including passives and object relatives. Hence we replicate Caplan & Waters's specific findings but reach opposite conclusions, based on wider evidence.

According to several recent studies, a big chunk of college students in North America and Europe uses so called ‘smart drugs' to enhance their cognitive capacities aiming at improving their academic performance. With these practices, there comes a certain moral unease. This unease is shared by many, yet it is difficult to pinpoint and in need of justification. Other than simply pointing to the medical risks coming along with using non-prescribed medication, the salient moral question is whether these practices are (...) troubling in and of themselves. In due consideration of empirical insights into the concrete effects of smart drugs on brain and behavior, our attempt is to articulate wherein this moral unease consists and to argue for why the authors believe cognitive enhancement to be morally objectionable. The authors will contend that the moral problem with these practices lies less in the end it seeks, than in the underlying human disposition it expresses and promotes. Some might ask, what is wrong with molding our cognitive capacities to achieve excellence, get a competitive edge, or, as the whim takes us? In all of these occasions, the usage of smart drugs serves a certain goal, a telos. The goal is, broadly speaking, this: outsmarting opponents in an arms race for limited resources and thereby yielding a competitive edge. In plain words: competition is valued higher than cooperation or solidarity. What is wrong with striving for this goal? The authors submit that the question whether people really want to live in a society that promotes the mentality ‘individual competition over societal cooperation' deserves serious consideration. In developing their answer, the authors draw on an ‘Ethics of Constraint' framework, arguing that widespread off-label use of smart drugs bears the risk of negative neural/behavioral consequences for the individual that might, in the long run, be accompanied by changing social value orientations for the worse. The discussion demonstrates a variety of opinions and perspectives, as well as the clashing of opinions in a (...) respectful manner. The roundtable provides interesting discussion points about Bhaskar's approach to judgemental rationality, how we adjudicate between different meta-theories (such as between that of Bhaskar and Harré), and what role should normative values have in theoretical adjudication. Stochastic gene expression plays a leading developmental role through its contribution to cell differentiation. It is also proposed to promote phenotypic diversification in malignant cells. However, it remains unclear if these two forms of cellular bet‐hedging are identical or rather display distinct features. Here we argue that bet‐hedging phenomena in cancer cells are more similar to those occurring in unicellular organisms than to those of normal metazoan cells. We further propose that the atavistic bet‐hedging strategies in cancer originate from a (...) hijacking of the normal developmental bet‐hedging of metazoans. Finally, we discuss the constraints that may shape the atavistic bet‐hedging strategies of cancer cells. (shrink)

La philosophie des sciences d'Emile Meyerson (1859-1933) suscite aujourd'hui un regain d'interet. Proche de Bergson, de Brunschvicg et de De Broglie, Meyerson apparait comme un membre eminent, quoique neglige, de la tradition epistemologique francaise. Antipositiviste, fin connaisseur de la science classique et de la thermodynamique, il propose de penetrantes interpretations de la relativite et des quanta. Nourri de metaphysique allemande, il est egalement curieux des avancees theoriques de son temps, comme en temoignent ses riches correspondances avec Einstein, Husserl, Cassirer, ou (...) encore Dewey et MacTaggart. L'oeuvre foisonnante et complexe de Meyerson, critiquee par Bachelard, n'a cesse d'etre lue et appreciee de penseurs tels que Popper, Kuhn et Quine. Cette etude, s'appuyant sur les grands ouvrages publies du vivant de l'auteur, mais aussi sur des archives inedites, montre que l'epistemologie meyersonienne represente une tres originale et tres actuelle anthropologie de la connaissance. Using an international sample of environmental and social firm-level ratings between 2007 and 2019, we form synthetic overlapping region-based equity portfolios to examine the impact of screening stringency on abnormal returns and specific risk. While previous literature analyzes this relationship in a bidimensional setting, inferences made in this study are additionally robust to regional levels of market efficiency. Our results suggest that (1) screening stringency displays an inverted curvilinear relationship with risk-adjusted returns and (2) the impact on specific risk is (...) strictly increasing. Thus, portfolios that employ marginal and substantial screening incur the cost of responsible investing. However, moderate screening has the benefit of increasing performance without the burden of financing the least responsible corporations. (shrink)

Cette contribution s’intéresse au statut de l’aidant dans l’accompagnement non professionnel de patients atteints de la maladie d’Alzheimer. Nous envisageons le rôle de la maladie et la fonction du proche impliqué dans une relation d’aide ainsi que leur construction sociale, politique et sanitaire à partir des sciences du langage. Il s’agit de contribuer complémentairement aux professionnels de santé, à la compréhension d’une problématique urgente, l’accompagnement de la fin de vie, par l’une de ses manifestations dans différents espaces discursifs. Nous définissons (...) d’abord la problématique de l’aidance pour étudier à l’interface d’une analyse sémantique de mots (Sémantique des possibles argumentatifs) et d’une analyse linguistique des discours comment les discours (dictionnairiques, juridiques et médiatiques) disent et construisent l’activité d’accompagnement du malade. Il s’agit de mieux comprendre comment les aidants vivent cette expérience dans leur relation au malade, aux instances impliquées dans l’aide et dans l’espace social proche ou éloigné. En questionnant ainsi ce que font les mots dans le vécu des acteurs, depuis le choix des dénominations imposées par les discours juridiques jusqu’aux stratégies pour parler de l’aidant dans les discours médiatiques, nous interrogeons également leur adéquation à la reconnaissance d’un rôle social désormais incontournable. Contemporary debates in political ecology tend more and more to be held on the ontological level, where they are recomposed around the following alternative: should one conceive of nature as the order of reality that transcends society and that should be protected from the excesses of the latter? Or should one renounce the very partitioning of nature and society itself in order to imagine new, more sustainable, ecological arrangements? Examining both Bruno Latour’s and Jason Moore’s takes on this alternative we (...) argue that it should be overcome in favor of a naturalist and historical ontology of society inspired by the young Marx’s Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844. In this historico-naturalist perspective, social relations indeed appear as both determined by their environmental conditions as well as determining the uses of a collective make of its environment. The interest in this approach is to allow one to conceive of social alienation and environmental destruction as two sides of a same process which should therefore be conjointly addressed. (shrink)

Notre article se propose d’articuler au domaine de l’esthétique notre expérience en tant qu’organisateur d’expositions présentant des artistes internationaux dans un centre d’art indépendant au Japon. En nous basant sur une théorie de la réception des œuvres, nous proposerons une lecture des appréhensions habituelles des modalités courantes au Japon par le renvoi aux formules de Nishida concernant l’acte artistique. Dès lors se croisent deux notions de marginalité. La première renvoie à l’opposition entre philosophie analytique et philosophie existentielle, la seconde consiste (...) à minorer les formes d’art qui ne renvoient pas au bien de la communauté. Cet article se propose de traiter la question de l’autorité. Après l’avoir définie selon un point de vue sociohistorique et linguistique, c’est dans une approche lacanienne que l’autorité est abordée afin d’appréhender ses soubassements. L’élucidation de cette opération psychique est essentiellement entreprise par le truchement de l’analyse de la paternité et nous avons tâché de repérer sur lequel de ses registres l’autorité est effective. C’est dans la prise en compte de la dimension du symbolique que l’autorité révèle le paradoxe qui (...) la fonde, à savoir qu’elle n’est pas due à la personne qui la manifeste, contrairement aux apparences, dans la mesure où elle est fondamentalement reçue de l’Autre. Cette perspective ne peut manquer de réinterroger la thèse du déclin de l’image paternelle et de ses conséquences sur le devenir de l’autorité. (shrink)
