Gilbert Romeyer Dherbey, qui avait succédé à Pierre Aubenque à la chaire de philosophie antique de Paris IV, et qui a su maintenir très haut le rayonnement international du Centre de recherches sur la pensée antique, plus familièrement appelé Centre Léon Robin, n'est pas seulement un aristotélisant subtil et exigeant. Il a toujours refusé une pure érudition qui oublierait de se relier à une pensée philosophique. Et par là même, peut-être, il déborde le cadre strictement universitaire de la (...) spécialisation, d'abord, non seulement à l'intérieur du domaine grec, avec notamment son approche des présocratiques, mais surtout comme éditeur et interprète reconnu de Maine de Biran, et aussi par son goût de la littérature, que trahit une élégance stylistique heureusement toujours féconde. C'est pour rendre hommage au professeur et à l'homme, que nous nous sommes réunis à Lyon, au printemps 2008, autour de lui, son propre professeur de khâgne, M Gourinat, son camarade de toujours, J-F Marquet, ex-collègue de Paris IV, le maître des études hégéliennes qu'est B Bourgeois, les collègues, les amis, les anciens élèves, que sont B Saint Girons, M Protopapas, A-G Wersinger, A Devarieux, J-J Duhot, J-F Mattéi, J Frère, M Rashed, A Villani, F Baghdassarian. Pour Aristote, la Cité commence lorsque les hommes qui la composent passent de la multiplicité quantitative à la diversité qualitative, c'est-à-dire qu'elle naît avec la différence. Cette différenciation est analysée principalement au niveau des formes de commandement et de la justice. Dès lors, on comprend qu'Aristote soit conduit à une critique radicale de la conception platonicienne de la Cité, laquelle doit manifester le plus haut degré possible d'unification. Cette critique se résume dans le rejet très argumenté de la mise en (...) commun des biens, des femmes et des enfants. Elle ne témoigne pas de la part d'Aristote, comme on l'a dit, d'une évocation approximative des thèses platoniciennes, mais d'une référence précise au texte de Platon. According to Aristote, the City begins when those who belong to it change from quantitative multiplicity to qualitative multifariousness, i.e. it is given birth through différence. Such a differenciation is mainly analyzed on the level of forms of command and justice. Hence one understands Aristotle to have been driven to a radical criticism of the conception Plato had of the City, the latter liable to manifest the highest degree of unification. Such a criticism can be summed up in the very argumented rejection of the sharing in common of goods, women and children. It does not evidence, on the part of Aristotle, as was said previously, an approximative evocation of Plato's theses, but rather a precise reference to Plato's text. (shrink)

There are two divergent testimonies concerning the definition of the telos of human life by the Stoic Zeno, one by Diogenes Laertius and one by Stobaeus. Now, these tes­timonies do not confirm each other exactly, because the first one asserts that the telos is “to live in agreement with nature” (long formula), while the second defines it as “to live in accordance (to oneself)” (short formula). The author first investigates the sources, and then challenges the philosophical interpretation of both formulas (...) presented by Joseph Moreau and, from the criticism of this interpretation, tries to establish the legitimacy of Diogenes Laetius’ testimony, in other words the attribution of the long formula to Zeno. The letter from Georges Florovsky to Davis McCaughey is a reflection after reading the Report The Era of Atomic Power: Report of a Commission (1946). Florovsky gives his own arguments against the development of research concerning nuclear weapons and their use. These include: treating an attempt at a technical transformation of the world as a human claim to put oneself in God’s place, i.e., to be a God-man. This volume is a direct result of a conference held at Princeton University to honor George A. Miller, an extraordinary psychologist. Beginning with the assumption that the normative conception of Zen that Dōgen expounded and practiced constitutes at its heart a religio-philosophical practice, I focus on Dōgen’s zazen-only as its primary locus. Specifying the nature of zazen-only on and off the cushion, I seek to foreground the ways in which the transformation of apparent dualities into non-dual dualities is key to understanding Dōgen’s Zen as a religio-philosophical practice. Since this activity implicates more than experience, e.g., valuations, desires, goals, actions, reactions, etc., (...) i.e., the entire psycho-physical existence of the practitioner, it is itself philosophical in the demands it makes on practitioners in the “nitty gritty” of life. Further, the activity of transforming apparent dualities into non-dual dualities relies on two other important concepts that Dōgen utilizes, those of “weighing emptiness” and non-thinking. I, thus, focus on expounding the manner in which grappling with non-dual duality, weighing emptiness, and non-thinking should be seen as loci of Dōgen’s religio-philosophical activities. Lastly, I note that the extent to which someone can engage the philosophical dimensions will depend on the person, their motivations, and that of their teachers. Yet, the more deeply one can penetrate the various issues, ideas, and concepts at stake, the deeper one’s practice-realization.Yet, following Hee-Jin Kim’s treatment of it, weighing emptiness is vital to the dynamicity of practice-realization in the world. This is because weighing emptiness is a way to describe the transformation and engagement with a non-dual duality in the world. While not denying the idea of “equality in emptiness,” it insists that differences must be taken into consideration in realizing the fairness, reasonableness, and justness of the practitioner acting in the world. Georges Sorel's Study on Vico is a revelatory document of the depths and stakes of French social thought at the end of the 19th century. What brought Sorel to the 18th century Neapolitan theorist of history? Acute awareness of the limitations of Marxist thought in his day, a profound concern with the material underpinnings of language, law, and culture, and the imperative to understand the possibilities of revolutionary change. This article is a review of the literature on the subject of how nurses who provide palliative care are affected by ethical issues. Few publications focus directly on the moral experience of palliative care nurses, so the review was expanded to include the moral problems experienced by nurses in the care of the terminally ill patients. The concepts are first defined, and then the moral attitudes of nurses, the threats to their moral integrity, the moral problems that are perceived by (...) nurses, and the emotional consequences of these moral problems are considered in turn. The results show that the moral behaviour of nurses, which is theoretically grounded in commitment to care and to the patient, appears to be shaped by specific processes that lead to engagement or to mental and behavioural disengagement in morally difficult situations. Nurses often appear to fail to recognize the moral dimensions of the problems they experience and also to lack the skills they need to resolve moral problems adequately. Although the findings show that several elements that are beyond the control of nurses, owing to their lack of autonomy and authority, influence their moral experience, intrinsic factors such as feelings of insecurity and powerlessness have a profound effect on nurses’ perceptions and attitudes in the face of moral problems. The moral problems perceived by these nurses are related to end-of-life issues, communication with patients, the suffering of patients, and the appropriateness of the medical treatment. (shrink)
