If the words of natural human language possess a universal positivity bias, as assumed by Boucher and Osgood’s (1969) famous Pollyanna hypothesis and computationally confirmed for large text corpora in several languages (Dodds et al., 2015), then children and youth literature (CYL) should also show a Pollyanna effect. Here we tested this prediction applying a vector space model- based sentiment analysis tool called SentiArt (Jacobs, 2019) to two CYL corpora, one in English (372 books) and one in German (500 books). Pitching our analysis at the sentence level, and assessing semantic as well as lexico-grammatical information, bBoth corpora show the Pollyanna effect and thus add further evidence to the universality hypothesis. The results of our multivariate sentiment analyses provide interesting testable predictions for future scientific studies of literature. (shrink)

The “return of the state” as an economic actor has left scholars at a lack of theoretical tools to capture the characteristics of state-dominated business systems. This is reflected in the fact that any type of state intervention in the economy is too easily qualified as a sign of “authoritarian capitalism,” which has led scholars to lump together countries as diverse as China, Singapore, and Norway under that heading. Rather than considering any type of state intervention in the economy as (...) authoritarian, we propose a more sophisticated conceptualization, which distinguishes two boundaries between the public and the private domains and conceives of the “return of the state” as the erosion of one or both of them. This conceptualization allows us to clearly distinguish a shift from an ideal-typical market-based “regulatory capitalism” to “state capitalism” or “authoritarian capitalism,” respectively. We use interview data with business leaders in an extreme case of the return of the state to identify the nature of the mechanisms by which an authoritarian government erodes these private-public divides. We argue that a focus on these constitutive mechanisms of the erosion of private-public divides allows us to define “authoritarian capitalism” in a way that makes it a useful tool to understand contexts beyond the Chinese case in which it first emerged. We start this paper by arguing that causality should, in analogy with force in Newtonian physics, be understood as a theoretical concept that is not explicated by a single definition, but by the axioms of a theory. Such an understanding of causality implicitly underlies the well-known theory of causal nets and has been explicitly promoted by Glymour. In this paper we investigate the explanatory warrant and empirical content of TCN. We sketch how the assumption of directed cause–effect relations can be (...) philosophically justified by an inference to the best explanation. We then ask whether the explanations provided by TCN are merely post-facto or have independently testable empirical content. To answer this question we develop a fine-grained axiomatization of TCN, including a distinction of different kinds of faithfulness. A number of theorems show that although the core axioms of TCN are empirically empty, extended versions of TCN have successively increasing empirical content. (shrink)

This open access book examines the many contributions of Paul Lorenzen, an outstanding philosopher from the latter half of the 20th century. It features papers focused on integrating Lorenzen's original approach into the history of logic and mathematics. The papers also explore how practitioners can implement Lorenzen’s systematical ideas in today’s debates on proof-theoretic semantics, databank management, and stochastics. This paper contributes to the clarification of the concept of “typicality” discussed in contemporary philosophy of physics by conceiving the nomological status of a typical behaviour such as that expressed in the Second Law of Thermodynamics as a “minutis rectis law”. A brief sketch of the discovery of “typicality” shows that there were ideas of typical behaviour not only in physics but also in sociology. On this basis and in analogy to the Second Law of Thermodynamics, it is shown that (...) the nomological status of sociological laws such as Gresham’s Law can also be conceived as “minutis rectis laws”. _The Structure and Dynamics of the Psyche_ first appeared in the _Collected Works_ in 1960. In this new edition bibliographical citations and entries have been revised in the light of subsequent publications in the _Collected Works_, and essential corrections have been made. The book traces an important line of development in Jung's thought from 1912 onwards. The earliest of the papers elaborates Freud's concept of sexual libido into that of psychic energy. In those that follow we see how, Jung, discarding (...) one by one the traditional 'philosophical' hypotheses, gradually arrived at a concept which is even more controversial than psychic energy was in its day ^DDL namely, psychic reality. The book contains the first mention of the archetype in Jung's writings as well as his later views on its nature. There is also a valuable account of the therapeutic uses of 'active imagination' first described in an essay written in 1916. (shrink)

Ausgehend von den Konkurrenzbegriffen Niklas Luhmanns und Georg Simmels untersucht der Artikel, inwieweit sich Konkurrenzverhältnisse an frühneuzeitlichen Universitäten in den Begriffen von Konkurrenzbedingungen moderner Ökonomie interpretieren lassen. Dieses wird anhand von Gelehrtenstreiten, dem Disputationswesen sowie Konflikten über professorale Privilegien und Universitätsgründungen diskutiert. Die zentrale These lautet, dass ökonomische Bedingungen sehr wohl eine wesentliche Rolle für Konkurrenzverhältnisse spielten, diese aber eben dem feudalistischen Wirtschaftssystem entsprachen und auf Erlangung bzw. Wahrung von Pfründen und Privilegien ausgerichtet waren. Ein moderner Konkurrenzbegriff ist demnach nur (...) sehr begrenzt anwendbar. (shrink)

This chapter suggests that descriptive epidemiological studies like the Global Burden of Disease Study can usefully be divided into four tasks: describing individuals’ health states over time, assessing their health states under a range of counterfactual scenarios, summarizing the information collected, and then packaging it for presentation. The authors show that each of these tasks raises important and challenging ethical questions. They comment on some of the philosophical issues involved in measuring health states, attributing causes to health outcomes, choosing the (...) counterfactual against which to assess causes, aggregating and summarizing complex information across multiple domains, discounting, age-weighting, handling fetal deaths, measuring health inequalities, representing uncertainty, and assessing personal responsibility for health outcomes. Der Wissenschaftsbegriff kann nicht einseitig auf den Begriff von "science" eingeengt werden. Eine strenge Scheidung in naturwissenschaftliche und geisteswissenschaftliche Methoden ist nicht möglich. Paradigmatisch für die Naturwissenschaften ist die hypothetisch-deduktive für die Geisteswissenschaften die hermeneutische Methode. Praktisch sind beide Methodenschemata immer ineinander verschränkt. Da die hermeneutische Methode auch nicht-wissenschaftlich verwendet wird, ist es notwendig Kriterien ihrer Wissenschaftlichkeit anzugeben. Der Vergleich beider Methoden zeigt, daß beide hypothetisch sind. Konkurrierenden Modellen entsprechen konkurrierende Deutungen. Die naturwissenschaftliche Methode kann im allgemeinen Entscheidungen erzwingen, da (...) sie immer neue Erfahrungen erzeugen kann. Demgegenüber ist das Erfahrungsmaterial in den Geisteswissenschaften vorgegeben und nicht beliebig vermehrbar. Entscheidungen zwischen konkurrierenden Deutungen sind daher nicht erzwingbar. (shrink)
