Su implementación aparece solapada en una vida cotidiana que depende, como nunca antes, de los avances tecnológicos. La posición que manejaremos es que esta ideología, que sobredimensiona el papel de la tecnología en la sociedad, tiene una visión limitada respecto con los conflictos éticos, económicos y sociales que dimanan de sus presupuestos. El problema no (...) es negar la tecnología sino qué rol juega en la construcción de la sociedad. El transhumanismo puede estar vendiendo un falso sueño de libertad, donde la uniformidad, la ausencia de crítica, la discriminación y la separación radical entre pobres y ricos definan ese mundo paradisíaco que propone. It is the aim of this paper to establish the concept of politicized medicine. The starting point is the work by Steger and Schochow on the Closed Venerological Wards in the GDR. Steger and Schochow operate with the concept of politicized medicine, although they do not elaborate it due to their primarily empirical approach. In this paper, the theoretical foundations for this concept shall be laid. Therefore, the results of the research by Steger and Schochow as well as the different (...) approaches to politicized medicine have to be examined. In a further step, the house rules of the Closed Venerological ward in Halle is analyzed as an example of politicized medicine. Finally, politicized medicine is differentiated from Foucault’s approach of Bio-Power/Bio-Politics on order to demonstrate its status as an autonomous and fruitful concept. (shrink)

In this commentary, I focus on Jones' suggestion of a close connection between the domain of space and that of kinship. I expand on that suggestion by introducing the concept of frame of reference and show how it can possibly participate to the generation of kinship systems.

This paper discusses a claim by Clifton and Halvorson (2001) that, contrary to non-relativistic quantum mechanics, local operations can never destroy entanglement in relativistic quantum field theory. The impossibility of achieving local disentanglement would raise a threat for the mutual independence between microscopic subsystems. Here, we observe that Clifton and Halvorson no-go result rests on an unnecessarily strong notion of local operations, which we label absolutely local operations, and we argue that a weaker notion, namely that of relatively local operations, (...) is sufficient to guarantee that acting on one subsystem does not have non-local effects on another spacelike separated subsystem. We then show that one can achieve local disentanglement in relativistic quantum field theory by means of relatively local operations. In fact, we prove that, under the split property, there exists a class of disentangling relatively local operations. (shrink)

Interventions in the human germline have been regarded as a red line in genetic engineering up to now. However, with the recent progress in genome editing techniques, first and foremost CRISPR-based methods, the tide seems to be turning. The therapeutic benefits in particular are brought forward as an argument in favor of germline genome editing. According to this view, the main benefit of GGE is disease prevention. The procedure could be used to prevent monogenetic conditions for which no treatment is (...) available so far. This leads many commentators to the view that the benefits of GGE outweigh the risks. In this article, I examine the status and ethical implications of GGE as a means of disease prevention. I intend to show that the notion of GGE as disease prevention is only true for one specific application. Instead of being preventive treatments, most applications of GGE are advanced techniques of assisted reproduction. As such, they can be thought of as wish-fulfilling medicine, that is the use of medical techniques for non-medically indicated purposes. Thus, it is necessary to reconsider the risk-benefit analysis of GGE for most of its applications. (shrink)

Up to 1800, before Jacobi was diverted into a simplistic distinction between understanding and reason, he had what amounted to the sketch of a potentially interesting theory of experience. The theory had its source in the Herzensmensch side of Jacobi’s persona. It was summed up in a formula “Wie die Triebe, so der Sinn; und wie der Sinn, so die Triebe,” which Jacobi used first to confront Lessing, and then Mendelssohn. In the Dialogue David Hume, he further argued that Kant’s (...) categories can be derived a posteriori on the basis of a feeling of resistance which Hume had also recognized. Reason is but a form of life. However, without an adequate concept of precisely this very reason, such as Jacobi obviously lacked, the theory was vulnerable to the danger of both historicizing and naturalizing truth. These were consequences that Jacobi could not accept. It is no surprise that the original sketch of a theory went nowhere. (shrink)
