Reconciling the Ipseity-Disturbance Model with the Presence of Painful Affect in Schizophrenia.Jay A. Hamm, Benjamin Buck & Paul H. Lysaker - 2015 - Philosophy, Psychiatry, and Psychology 22 (3):197-208.
Theoretical models of schizophrenia have traditionally emphasized the biological social, and environmental forces that lead to the dysfunction that characterizes this disorder. However important these aspects may be, an understanding of schizophrenia is incomplete without attention to the first-person perspective of those who continue to struggle to find meaning and security in the midst of this disorder. Encouragingly, an interest has grown steadily in recent years in understanding subjective experience in schizophrenia, and can be found within a range of bodies (...)

    Self-Experience in Schizophrenia: Metacognition as a Construct to Advance Understanding.Jay A. Hamm, Benjamin Buck & Paul H. Lysaker - 2015 - Philosophy, Psychiatry, and Psychology 22 (3):217-220.
In our original piece, we suggested that contemporary phenomenological models of schizophrenia such as the ipseity-disturbance model emphasize perceptual and cognitive elements of self-disturbances, potentially neglecting the presence and central importance of painful affect in the experience of schizophrenia. We concluded that integrating affect within developing phenomenological models would offer not only a theoretical advance but also a possible path to more effective recovery-oriented treatment. In response, Phillips agrees there is incontrovertible evidence of painful affect central to the experience of (...)

The Struggle for Legitimacy in Business and Human Rights Regulation—a Consideration of the Processes Leading to the UN Guiding Principles and an International Treaty.Brigitte Hamm - 2021 - Human Rights Review 23 (1):103-125.
After the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights were adopted in 2011, an international treaty has been being negotiated since 2014. The two instruments reveal similarities and also conflicts regarding the adequate organization of the global economy based on human rights. The focus in this article will be on the processes leading to these instruments, because they themselves mirror different understandings of governance in the field of business and human rights as well as the struggle over the power (...)

    Christian Thought, Race, Blumenbach, and Historicizing.Ernie Hamm - 2019 - Zygon 54 (1):237-245.
Terence Keel's Divine Variations: How Christian Thought Became Racial Science attributes the origins of “racial science” to Christian intellectual history. This is a bold and original argument, but it is not without deep difficulties, particularly in the early sections of the book. The concept of “race” is not sufficiently historicized and the treatment of Johann Friedrich Blumenbach needs to be more firmly grounded in the world of eighteenth‐century natural history.

Physicians neglect base rates, and it matters.Robert M. Hamm - 1996 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 19 (1):25-26.
A recent study showed physicians' reasoning about a realistic case to be ignorant of base rate. It also showed physicians interpreting information pertinent to base rate differently, depending on whether it was presented early or late in the case. Although these adult reasoners might do better if given hints through talk of relative frequencies, this would not prove that they had no problem of base rate neglect.

Biologically primed acquisition of aversions and association of expected stimulus pairs: Two different forms of learning.Alfons Hamm - 1995 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 18 (2):301-302.
The present commentary emphasizes that the acquisition of fear always involves complex changes in several quasi-independent response systems. Stimulus-specific electrodermal response differentiation as well as the bias to overestimate the belongingness of certain stimulus pairs mainly indicates cognitive processes of selective orienting and attention. Emotion, however, also involves the activation of subcortical motivational circuits. Why certain stimuli acquire rapid access to these basic motivational systems is not explained by the expectancy bias model.

Environmental narratives in the Huainanzi and the anthropocene.Matthew James Hamm - 2024 - Lanham: Lexington Books.
Environmental Narratives in the Huainanzi and the Anthropocene analyzes the Anthropocene periodization using the Huainanzi, an eastern Eurasian text from the second century BCE. This book argues that the Anthropocene concept inhibits the transformative change needed to address global crises such as climate change and mass extinction.

    Is λ an appropriate control variable for locomotion?Thomas M. Hamm & Zong-Sheng Han - 1995 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 18 (4):761-762.
The lambda model predicts that the command received by each motor nucleus during locomotion is specific for the joint at which its muscle acts and is independent of external conditions. However, investigation of the commands received by motor nuclei during fictive locomotion and of the sensitivity of these commands to feedback from the limb during locomotion indicates that neither condition is satisfied.
