First systematic presentation and assessment of the groundbreaking journal Cahiers pour l’Analyse. Concept and Form is a two-volume monument to the work of the philosophy journal the Cahiers pour l’Analyse (1966–69), the most ambitious and radical collective project to emerge from French structuralism. Inspired by their teachers Louis Althusser and Jacques Lacan, the editors of the Cahiers sought to sever philosophy from the interpretation of given meanings or experiences, focusing instead on the mechanisms that structure specific configurations of discourse, from (...) the psychological and ideological to the literary, scientific, and political. Adequate analysis of the operations at work in these configurations, they argue, helps prepare the way for their revolutionary transformation. The first volume comprises English translations of some of the most important theoretical texts published in the journal, written by thinkers who would soon be counted among the most inventive and influential of their generation. The second volume collects newly commissioned essays on the journal, together with recent interviews with people who were either members of its editorial board or associated with its broader theoretical project. This website provides an electronic annotated edition of the French philosophical journal Les Cahiers pour l’Analyse. The site provides the original French texts in both html and facsimile pdf versions, substantial synopses of each article, and translations of some articles; it also includes recent interviews with members of the original editorial board, a conceptual index, discussions of the most significant concepts at issue in the journal, and brief entries on the main people involved with it.

The concept of the subject is fundamentally equivocal, and its polit-ical connotations remain ambiguous. I propose to foreground in-stead the general category of the actor, in both its theatrical and action-oriented senses. The theatrical register helps remind us of the difference between being and doing, or between a performer and a role; it also serves to foreground the deliberate, trained, pre-pared, and situated quality of any performance. More importantly, the actor understood as capable of action helps to foreground as-pects of (...) agency that the philosophers of Jean-Luc Nancy’s genera-tion tended to downplay or condemn, notably those of intention, purpose, and will. If we are actually to confront the enormous prob-lems facing the world, we need an adequate account of collective action and thus of collective purpose. Rousseau and Marx help to frame some of the elements of such an account, while Luxemburg, Sartre, and Fanon, among many others, help to clarify some of its contemporary dimensions. Review essay of Peter Hallward's Out of This World: Deleuze and the Philosophy of Creation.

In Out of This World, Peter Hallward argues that Deleuze's philosophy is, in spite of its proclaimed Nietzscheanism, intrinsically nihilistic. This article defends Deleuze against this accusation by reassessing his relationship to Nietzsche. I argue that both thinkers pose a similar problem, that of agency, and that the modus operandi of both for solving it relies on viewing agency as experimentation. The paper highlights the strong pragmatic dimension at play in Deleuze's philosophy: Deleuze aims to penetrate increasingly deeply (...) into this very world and to provide us with tools for intensifying our sensitivity to and engagement with it. To bring this into view, I offer a parallel reading of Nietzsche's and Deleuze's account of the production of our empirical experience, their critical stance towards such experience, and their means of overcoming it by engaging fully with problematic aspects of reality.
