Imagination has recently attracted considerable attention from epistemologists and is recognized as a source of belief and even knowledge. One remarkable feature of imagination is that it is often and typically agentive: agents decide to imagine. In cases in which imagination results in a belief, the agentiveness of imagination may be taken to give rise to indirect doxastic control and epistemic responsibility. This observation calls for a proper understanding of agentive imagination. In particular, it calls for the development of a (...) semantics of imagination ascriptions. In the present paper an earlier suggestion by Ilkka Niiniluoto for a logic of imagination is considered. This proposal does not capture the agentive nature of imagination, and an alternative semantics is suggested. The new semantics combines the modal logic of agency with the neighbourhood semantics from alethic modal logic. (shrink)

This is a purely conceptual paper. It aims at presenting and putting into perspective the idea of a proof-theoretic semantics of the logical operations. The first section briefly surveys various semantic paradigms, and Section 2 focuses on one particular paradigm, namely the proof-theoretic semantics of the logical operations.

This volume is dedicated to Prof. Dag Prawitz and his outstanding contributions to philosophical and mathematical logic. Prawitz's eminent contributions to structural proof theory, or general proof theory, as he calls it, and inference-based meaning theories have been extremely influential in the development of modern proof theory and anti-realistic semantics. In particular, Prawitz is the main author on natural deduction in addition to Gerhard Gentzen, who defined natural deduction in his PhD thesis published in 1934. The book opens with an (...) introductory paper that surveys Prawitz's numerous contributions to proof theory and proof-theoretic semantics and puts his work into a somewhat broader perspective, both historically and systematically. Chapters include either in-depth studies of certain aspects of Dag Prawitz's work or address open research problems that are concerned with core issues in structural proof theory and range from philosophical essays to papers of a mathematical nature. Investigations into the necessity of thought and the theory of grounds and computational justifications as well as an examination of Prawitz's conception of the validity of inferences in the light of three “dogmas of proof-theoretic semantics” are included. More formal papers deal with the constructive behaviour of fragments of classical logic and fragments of the modal logic S4 among other topics. In addition, there are chapters about inversion principles, normalization of proofs, and the notion of proof-theoretic harmony and other areas of a more mathematical persuasion. Dag Prawitz also writes a chapter in which he explains his current views on the epistemic dimension of proofs and addresses the question why some inferences succeed in conferring evidence on their conclusions when applied to premises for which one already possesses evidence. After a brief overview of Wittgenstein's stock of remarks on the subject of religion from 1949 – 1951, this article will focus on two particular points: (1) supposedly nonsensical conceptions of God, for instance in the context of proofs of God, (2) definitions of the term ”God” by hinting at something. Der Verfasser beschreibt in lebendiger Weise das Werden seiner «philosophischen Existenz», wobei er besonders Ereignisse schildert, die ihm auf der Suche nach Sinn wichtig sind. So profiliert sich in immer wieder neuen Abwandlungen die Erfahrung, dass, wenn man sich einer Aufgabe zur Verfügung stellt und sich von Widerständen nicht bestimmen lässt, sondern «aus sich heraustritt», sich die Dinge fügen und zu einer ungeahnten positiven Wirkung führen können. Darin zeigt sich, dass das Seiende darauf angelegt ist, laufend aus sich herauszugehen, zu (...) «ek-sistieren», um in dieser Auseinandersetzung tiefer zu sich selbst zu kommen. Diese philosophische Autobiographie gliedert sich nach den vier Lebensetappen: Kindheit, Jugend, berufliche Aktivität, Seniorenalter. Den Band beschließt eine Skizze der Grundzüge der Philosophie des Autors, zu der die vorausgegangene Lebensdarstellung einen existentiellen Zugang ermöglicht; umgekehrt gewinnt so die Aussage des Lebens eine philosophische Fundierung. Das Buch leistet von einer neuen Seite her - einer philosophisch reflektierten Lebenserfahrung - einen aktuellen Beitrag zur geistigen Auseinandersetzung. Das Gemeinwohl ist Gegenstand, aber auch Bedingung politischer Auseinandersetzungen. Daher ist eine reflexiver Politik gefordert, die ihr Selbstverständnis auf der Basis einer Gemeinwohlkonzeption definiert. Der Autor thematisiert die theoretischen Grundlagen einer gemeinwohlorientierten Politik und veranschaulicht diese anhand von Beispielen.
