La fondation de Nicopolis est la réponse donnée par Rome aux problèmes de l'organisation politique, administrative et sociale de l'Épire méridionale et de l'Acarnanie. Aussi les constructions telles que l'aqueduc constituent-elles, par leur inscription dans le paysage urbain et rural, un symbole majeur de la romanisation. Or le tracé de cet aqueduc, long de près de soixante-dix kilomètres, est encore imparfaitement connu. Nous en avons donc repris l'étude en nous attachant à reconstituer les contraintes auxquelles sa construction avait été soumise, (...) ainsi que l'évolution géomorphologique récente des bassins-versants traversés. Au-delà de l'aspect technique et naturaliste, nous nous sommes également attachés à replacer l'aqueduc dans le contexte territorial et géopolitique de l'époque. (shrink)

Cette écriture du cauchemar repose en réalité sur une structure idéologique d'une extrême rigueur et révèle une logique fantasmatique d'une effrayante complexité, que l'on pourra comparer avec cet autre texte au sujet " abominable " qu'est Le Lévite d'Ephraïm, poème en prose composé par Rousseau sur la route de l'exil en juin 1762.

One of Rousseau’s later and most puzzling works and never before available in English, this neglected autobiographical piece was the product of the philosopher’s old age and sense of persecution. Long viewed simply as evidence of his growing paranoia, it consists of three dialogues between a character named “Rousseau” and one identified only as “Frenchman” who discuss the bad reputation and works of an author named “Jean-Jacques.” Dialogues offers a fascinating retrospective of his literary career.

Frederick Watkins’ 1953 edition of Rousseau’s _Political Writings_ has long been noted for being fully accurate while representing much of Rousseau’s eloquence and elegance. It contains what is widely regarded as the finest English translation of _The Social Contract_, Rousseau’s greatest political treatise. In addition, this edition offers the best available translation of the late and important _Government of Poland_ and the only published English translation of the fragment _Constitutional Project for Corsica_, which, says Watkins, provides the clearest possible demonstration (...) of the practical implications of Rousseau’s political thought. Jean-Jacques Rousseaus Schriften zur Stiftung eines fortdauernden Friedens unter den europäischen Völkern, Extrait du Projet de Paix Perpétuelle de Monsieur L'Abbé de Saint-Pierre und Jugement sur la Paix Perpétuelle, haben eigenständige Bedeutung in der systematischen Entfaltung einer Forderung der Rechtsphilosophie, die Kant später "nicht bloß [als] einen Teil, sondern den ganzen Endzweck der Rechtslehre innerhalb der Grenzen der bloßen Vernunft" hervorgehoben hat. Beide Schriften verdienen besondere Aufmerksamkeit, da ihnen eine gegenüber dem Abbé selbständige und weiterführende rechtsphilosophische Bedeutung in (...) der Entfaltung einer universalen Friedensidee zukommt, besonders auch im Hinblick auf die Genese von Kants berühmten Traktat Zum ewigen Frieden von 1795; so schreibt de Bastide in seinem Vorwort zur Erstausgabe des Extrait, man solle sich von dem Titel nicht täuschen lassen: "Der Analytiker [Rousseau] ist hier in sehr vielen Hinsichten der Schöpfer". In deutscher Sprache bislang nicht selbständig verfügbar, werden sie hier in einer das Original und die deutsche Übersetzung enthaltenden Neuausgabe mit einer ausführlichen Einleitung vorgelegt. Der 1756 verfaßte Extrait wurde erstmals veröffentlicht in der Ausgabe von de Bastide (Amsterdam 1761) und dann in die von Rousseau geplante, von ihm noch mit vorbereitete erste Gesamtausgabe seiner Werke von du Peyrou / Moultou (postum Genf 1782, dort Band 24) aufgenommen. Die ebenfalls 1756 abgeschlossene, aber zunächst zurückgehaltene Schrift Jugement wurde gemäß dem Willen Rousseaus in der genannten Ausgabe von 1782 (Band 24) überhaupt erstmals publiziert. Dans l'"Avis des éditeurs", on explique en quoi consiste l'intérêt particulier de ce recueil de lettres privées, non destinées à la publication. En plus, on apprend les circonstances grâce auxquelles une partie importante des papiers de Rousseau est entrée à la Bibliothèque de la ville (actuelle Bibliothèque publique et universitaire) de Neuchâtel: "J'entends que tous les papiers manuscrits de Jean-Jacques Rousseau [...] soient recueillis et rassemblées en paquets étiquetés et cachetés, pour être déposés dans une bibliothèque publique bien (...) assurée. Les lettres adressées à moi seront également déposées [...]" (extrait du testament de Pierre-Alexandre Du Peyrou du 22 juillet 1791. "Avis..." p. 16 s.). (shrink)

Lorsqu'il commence à écrire les Rêveries à l'automne 1776, Rousseau est un vieil homme proche de la mort, presque pauvre, célèbre dans toute l'Europe et pourtant assuré que l'espèce humaine le rejette. Il continue cependant d'écrire et les Rêveries sont à ses yeux la suite des Confessions. Mais il ne s'agit plus désormais de raconter sa vie ni de s'expliquer aux autres pour dévoiler sa vraie nature. Dans une solitude propice à l'introspection, si des souvenirs épars remontent maintenant à sa (...) mémoire, c'est pour lui-même qu'il les consigne en même temps qu'il cherche à se mieux connaître et réfléchir plus largement sur les ressorts de notre esprit humain. Mais ces méditations sont aussi des promenades où la rêverie devient expansion de l'être, où le contact avec la nature est source de bonheur dans la pure conscience d'exister. Une nouvelle manière d'écrire s'inaugure donc, un libre parcours sans effort que la ligne mélodieuse d'une prose souvent poétique rend admirablement sensible. Ces Rêveries que Rousseau nous laisse lorsqu'il meurt à Ermenonville en juillet 1778, il se peut ainsi qu'elles ne nous soient pas adressées : elles nous sont en tout cas destinées. (shrink)
