In a national survey, members of 4As agencies were contrasted with non-member agencies to determine awareness and influence of the 4As Standards of Practice, the Professional Code of Ethics for 4As members. The 4As Code was selected because the 4As represents the principle professional association of the support service industry, advertising.

In this way, the aim is to make better known the catechetical elements present in this anti-Manichaean work and also to contribute to a better knowledge of Augustinian catechesis. On the other hand, the catechetical and evangelizing concern of the bishop of Hippo in his reply to Faustus is emphasized here, highlighting his concern for the care of the faith of the (...) simple. The article presents the main aspects of the art of accompaniment inspired by the augustinian exegesis of Lk 24:13-35, not without resorting, when necessary, to other relevant texts of the Bishop of Hippo. For this purpose, after a brief introduction which shows the actuality of the theme in the ecclesial sphere, it is briefly presented how Augustine interprets the life of the human being based on the metaphor of the journey and the pilgrimage, and how he conceives them to be (...) a time and a path of harmonious growth. This serves as a framework to offer Augustinian orientations for the art of accompaniment based on his interpretation of Lk 24:13-35. The quality of working conditions have a direct impact on the individuals’ quality of life and level of well-being. Attention to well-being in work environments has become a matter of great interest for legislators. However, the well-being concept has not yet found a legal definition. The first commitment to achieve a global well-being strategy was made by the World Health Organisation. The European Union claims that a positive relationship between work and well-being is a necessary factor to reach greater economic (...) and social progress, since full and quality employment is one of the main elements of economic stability and social cohesion in a country. The Italian regulatory framework consists of various legislative provisions: the importance of the workers’ good health and quality of life has generated a complex regulatory system. El artículo presenta una visión panorámica de la exégesis católica del salmo (...) 49 durante la controversia para mostrar las constantes temáticas que se presentan, así como una evolución en los acentos teológicos de dicha exégesis a partir de la producción antidonatista agustiniana. Besides indicating the fundamental themes of the various contributions that come together in this monographic section, the purpose of this introduction is to recall the main features of the Hobbesian concept of power, starting from the belief that Hobbes’ philosophy is above all a phi-losophy of power. Based on a radical materialistic ontology, the Hobbesian semantics of power takes on different variations in the particular discursive fields it crosses, which in turn significantly influence its movement. Moreover the paper focuses on that part of Leviathan, dealing with religious issues, with that side of human life where conflicts stem from the variety of opinions regarding the conditions of salvation. In this case the tool of political violence is not useful. Hobbes thinks that this kind of conflicts can be resolved only if all the individuals involved will be persuaded of the consistency between obedience to the King and obedience to God. (shrink)

Taking cues from Michel Foucault’s late work on ancient cultures of self-care, this article argues that the success of neoliberalism is bound up with an epistemological critique of modernity forged by the movement’s founding theorists. This critique takes aim at three distinct intellectual currents – the socialist, the rationalist, and the pastoral – and thus marks a tripartite break from modern techniques of power and subjectivation. I contend that a Hellenistic model of self-cultivation – exemplified especially in Epicurean, Cynic, and (...) Stoic discourses and scrutinized meticulously by Foucault in his late lectures – becomes reactivated in late twentieth-century American economic and social thought. The second half of the article considers modes of digital writing as “technologies of the self.” Taking the case of “fake news” as my central reference point, I argue that common practices of social media “sharing” constitute an emerging practice of curatorial self-writing that makes one an especially favorable target for neoliberal strategies of social control. This article synthesizes research presented in several models of unethical behavior to develop propositions about the factors that facilitate and mitigate deception in online business communications. The work expands the social network perspective to incorporate the medium of communication as a significant influence on deception. We go beyond existing models by developing seven propositions that identify how social network and issue moral intensity characteristics influence the probability of deception in online business communication in comparison to traditional communication channels. This article argues for the recovery and re-incorporation of lost voices and debates into the history of political thought by focusing on the issue of sovereignty. It begins by examining why such a narrow understanding of the canon has come to dominate the sub-discipline and argues for critical approaches that treat the past as a “contested terrain” rather than an unfolding plot. It then turns to early twentieth-century Britain as an example of an era when thinkers who have been largely (...) forgotten by today’s political theorists argued loudly about the future of state sovereignty. It next focuses on a 1916 exchange of essays entitled “The Nature of the State in View of Its External Relations” by Delisle Burns, Bertrand Russell, and G.D.H. Cole, as an example of some of the most innovative and radical ideas to emerge from the period. The article concludes by arguing that re-engaging the work of these forgotten thinkers can broaden our conceptual horizons about sovereignty, speak to some of the most urgent issues of our time, and force open the concept of “the political” to radical reinterpretation. AimsThis study evaluates a protocol for early, routine ethics consultation for patients on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation to support decision-making in the context of clinical uncertainty with the aim of mitigating ethical conflict and moral distress.MethodsWe conducted a single-site qualitative analysis of EC documentation for all patients receiving ECMO support from 15 August 2018 to 15 May 2019. Detailed analysis of 20 ethically complex cases with protracted ethics involvement identifies four key ethical domains: limits of prognostication, bridge to nowhere, burden of (...) treatment and system-level concerns. There are three subthemes: relevant contextual factors, the role of EC and observed outcomes. Content analysis of transcripts from interviews with 20 members of the multidisciplinary ECMO team yields supplemental data on providers’ perceptions of the impact of the early intervention protocol.ResultsLimited outcome data for ECMO, unclear indications for withdrawal, adverse effects of treatment and an obligation to attend to programme metrics present significant ethical challenges in the care of this patient population. Upstream EC mitigates ethical conflict by setting clear expectations about ECMO as a time limited trial, promoting consistent messaging among multiple services and supporting surrogate decision-makers. When ECMO becomes a ‘bridge to nowhere’, EC facilitates decision-making that respects patient values yet successfully sets limits on non-beneficial use of this novel therapy.ConclusionData from this study support the conclusion that ECMO poses unique ethical challenges that necessitate a standardised protocol for early, routine EC—at least while this medical technology is in its nascent stages. Dans sa traduction partielle du Timée de Platon, Cicéron traduit le terme grec οὐσία par aeternitas et materia. Ces choix de traduction sont particulièrement intéressants à étudier puisqu’il n’existe pas de traduction fixe d’οὐσία en latin à l’époque de Cicéron – il n’est, en effet, pas à l’origine du néologisme essentia. Pourquoi Cicéron choisit-il deux termes latins pour traduire un même mot grec? Pourquoi deux mots si différents à la fois l’un de l’autre et du terme οὐσία? Quelle compréhension du (...) concept d’οὐσία, mais aussi du Timée, cette traduction induit-elle? Nous étudions dans cet article chacune des deux traductions latines et tentons de montrer que Cicéron est influencé par le contexte dans ses choix de traduction. Dans le « prélude » du discours de Timée, il traduit οὐσία par aeternitas lorsqu’il considère que le terme grec, opposé à γένεσις, correspond au participe substantivé τὸ ὂν ἀεί, γένεσιν δὲ οὐκ ἔχον. En traduisant οὐσία par aeternitas en 29c3, il fait du sème de l’éternité une caractéristique discriminante d’οὐσία, qui correspond également au modèle intelligible du monde. Dans le cas de materia, le mot latin traduit l’οὐσία dans le cadre du mélange de l’âme du monde par le démiurge dans un cratère. Cicéron choisit le terme materia qui sert généralement, en contexte philosophique, à désigner une matière disponible pour prendre la forme qu’on veut lui donner, selon différentes doctrines. Nous tentons de montrer que le contexte de la métaphore du mélange pousse Cicéron à considérer le terme οὐσία comme une « substance » qui entre dans la composition d’un mélange. Ces deux traductions d’οὐσία montrent que l’Arpinate choisit chacun des termes latins selon le sens précis qu’il donne à οὐσία, en fonction du contexte philosophique mais aussi en fonction du registre du discours. Biomarkers can be powerful tools to guide diagnosis, treatment, and research. However, prudent use of biomarkers requires formal validation efforts. Although the data needed for biomarker validation has traditionally been hard to access, new research initiatives can ease this process.

Even though theistic philosophers and scientists agree that God created, sustains, and providentially governs the physical universe and even though much has been published in general regarding divine action, what is needed is a fine-grained, conceptually coherent account of divine action, causation, dispositions, and laws of nature consistent with divine aseity, satisfying the widely recognized adequacy conditions for any account of dispositions.1 Such an account would be a basic part of a more comprehensive theory of divine action in relation to (...) the fundamental concepts of science and of mathematics. Perhaps the greatest challenge faced by Thomistic thinkers today is to approach the contemporary intellectual scene in a way they could anticipate their master approaching it. With the enormous growth of empirical knowledge since the thirteenth century, and the multiplication of diverse and often rival conceptual schemes to understand and explain the reality disclosed by our increasingly broad experience of the world, this is indeed a daunting task.

Ce numéro spécial de La Deleuziana est né d’une indignation à l’encontre de notre situation politique actuelle dans laquelle notre responsabilité d’êtres vivants partageant une planète commune est en proie à un manque cruel de soin à l’égard des autres. La notion de désir comme puissance de vie et force de création à la source de toute invention possible ainsi que de renouvellement de l’ordre établi s’est vite imposée à nous comme une nécessité théorique et pratique. Pourtant, le désir est (...) ce qui aujourd’hui semble aller le moins de soi. Tantôt confisqué par une société de consommation à outrance, relayée par des slogans vulgaires et le jeu des rencontres en ligne, tantôt dévoré par un état généralisé de dépression et d’anxiété qui dégénère dans la passivité voire l’indifférence, le désir prend de plus en plus la forme des personnages beckettiens épuisés. Saisi par l’évidence de sa palpable inefficacité tant théorique que pratique, ce numéro se donne pour objectif de réinvestir la question du désir afin de renouveler la question du vivre ensemble. L’intention initiale était d’analyser l’évolution des pratiques théoriques sur le désir en philosophie contemporaine et en psychanalyse avec une attention particulière portée aux transformations subjectives collectives opérées par les nouvelles technologies numériques. Il s’agissait d’ouvrir la voie à une compréhension du désir qui ne soit plus conçu comme une image (le désir d’être et ses structures d’identifications), ni comme un objet (le désir d’avoir et ses structures d’objectification), mais comme un milieu (le désir et ses dynamiques de relation). En effet, à la suite de Deleuze, nous posons que le désir est intransitif : il ne s’agit pas du désir de quelque chose (génitif objectif), ni du désir de quelqu’un (génitif subjectif). Le désir est un processus qui possède une existence empirique autonome et se réalise dans des entités concrètes. Ce sont ces entités qui bouleversent les milieux du désir. La question devient de savoir ce que serait un milieu désiré, désirant et désirable afin de comprendre ce qui peuple nos modalités d'être au monde. (shrink)

Cet article part de la supposition que la reprise de la thématique de la mémoire et de l’oubli, dans La mémoire, l’histoire, l’oubli, part d’une recherche de la “juste mémoire” dans un paysage politique français qui souffre de “boulimie commémorative,” comme le dénonce Pierre Nora dans Les lieux de mémoire. Est exposée la confrontation entre une conception de la mémoire empreinte d’émotions subjectives, en opposition à la rigueur scientifique de l’histoire, et une conception de la mémoire vive comme condition transcendantale (...) de notre relation au passé. Cette confrontation débouche sur l’insistance de l’aspect éthique de la politique mémorielle et des pratiques collectives d’oubli et d’amnésie. Selon Ricœur, les hypothèses de Freud sur l’élaboration du trauma et sur le travail de deuil peuvent servir de paradigme privilégié à cette entreprise qui vise une narration historique juste. Now working as a member of the Public Health Institute through the National Alliance for Life and Health Sciences , INSERM’s collective expert studies are contributing to its strategic plan for 2010-2015: “the experience gained in collectively developed expert studies will be strengthened to serve an active policy for delivering available knowledge to support decision-making in the public health system and citizens’ information”. Les étapes des recherches de Viviana Zelizer sont exposées, en portant une attention particulière au travail relationnel que mènent les acteurs.
