The question of laterality lies at the core of the image description technique in Diderot’s Salons. This essay aims at examining the role of laterality through a close analysis of Diderot’s commentaries of some artistic works. It is possible to recognize the role of laterality in the beholder’s gaze, in the aesthetic re-creation during the process of reception and, finally, in the inversion of left and right as productive development of the artistic image.

La compréhension de l’agir humain s’insère dans l’optique d’une ampleur perceptive plus ou moins grande, sans ignorer que les évaluations morales entrent comme facteurs d’orientation dans les descriptions du monde. Les deux auteurs posent la compréhension de l’activité pratique en (...) connexion stricte avec la structuration perceptive, réfutant la mythification de pseudofacultés psychologiques comme le désir, le choix, la volonté. Leurs propositions les plus intéressantes pour leurs conséquences implicites dans le champ éthique concernent la confi guration plurielle du perçu et ses possibilités de remodulation qui permettent une réorganisation continue de l’expérience. Those propositions of theirs whoseimplied consequences are the most interesting for the field of ethics concern the plural configuration of the perceived and its possibilities of remodulationthat permit a continuous reorganization of experience. Embodied cognition and enactive approaches have criticized the associationist, also called mechanistic, view of habits. Motivated by the enactive account of habits and research on the field of Motor Control, I argue that Ryle was both wrong and right about habits and their relation to intelligent behavior. Ryle was wrong in claiming that habits fall short of intelligent behavior. But Ryle was also right, he correctly puts habits in a continuity that goes from dispositions in general to what he considers (...) bonafide intelligent behavior or knowing-how. After some background, the Rylean distinction between habits and intelligent behavior is explored. I then move to Ryle’s mistake and its roots, tacitly endorsing the idea of instinct as innate behavior. In doing so, he neglected that variability and modifiability are the rules and not the exceptions in behavior. Research on the phenomena of motor redundancy of animal behavior, the enactive account of habits, and a dynamic account of intelligence are mobilized to correct his mistake. My proposed account explains Ryle’s mistake, why it is a mistake, and why it is an understandable mistake coming from someone with his perspective. The last section of the paper re-articulates the continuum between simple dispositions, habits, and highly skilled behavior. I reconceived the continuum of intelligence as including not only our habits, but all animal behavior. (shrink)

Resumo : O presente artigo visa mostrar e analisar como se constituem alguns dos argumentos sobre a eternidade das coisas no tratado primeiro, capítulo De aeternitate rerum do Exigit ordo, de Nicolau de Autrécourt. Como o próprio título do capítulo diz, trata-se de um conjunto de argumentos que buscam justificar a eternidade das coisas. A estratégia utilizada por nós é reconstruir e mostrar como se constituem e se organizam tais argumentos sobre a eternidade das coisas, elucidando o postulado autrecuriano de (...) que é provável que todas as coisas, sem exceção, sejam eternas; e que o universo seja eterno e composto de átomos, e regido por apenas um movimento, a saber, o movimento local. Nossa interpretação buscará abordar a questão, reconstruindo a filosofia da natureza de Autrécourt e alguns enunciados epistemológicos e ontológicos elaborados por ele. A questão do fundacionalismo epistêmico em Nicolau de Autrécourt pode ser colocada nos seguintes termos: há, de fato, um fundamento último do conhecimento? Qual é o critério de justificação que regula o nosso conhecimento? Contrariamente a Jean Buridan, um de seus críticos, Nicolau de Autrécourt está convencido de que todo conhecimento possui um único fundamento, o qual repousa no primeiro princípio como mecanismo de redução e justificação do conhecimento. O principal motivador para a constituição de uma epistemologia fundacionalista, tanto no (...) contexto medieval como no fundacionalismo contemporâneo, é a busca de uma solução para se evitar um regresso ao infinito. O esforço de uma quase sistematização epistemológica por parte de Autrécourt visa, antes de mais nada, uma restrição ao regresso ao infinito. Este artigo, enfim, oferecerá uma reconstrução do primeiro princípio como elemento central na constituição de uma epistemologia de caráter fundacionalista. The objective of this work is to show, according to Frege, in which the procedure consists of 'abstraction' he worded unsystematic in Chapter IV, in the context of § § 64-69 ss. Fundamentals of Arithmetic. This procedure, although controversial, is a key operator for defining the concept of number, the object of investigation of that chapter. At the beginning of § 62, asks the question: how can we therefore be given a number, if we can not have him no representation (...) or intuition? In a concise manner, that responds only in the context of a proposition words mean something. Frege seeks to define the concept of number in a holistic way, based on relationships until you reach your final definition of the numbers in propositions that are objective and that follow. However, this proposal needs to be set and the procedure which uses is the "abstraction" which is exemplified by (i) parallel and (ii) equinumerosity. That is scoped to an equivalence relation: symmetry, reflexivity and transitivity, all the internal principles mentioned procedure. Further, it will show the relevance of the criticism waged the notion of abstract objects (numbers) prepared by E. J. Lowe in his book The Metaphysics of Abstract Objectsin section II about abstract entities. (shrink)

Hegel’s philosophy had a decisive role in the development of Eugen Fink’s thought, by suggesting the conceptual means to elaborate a third phenomenological paradigm beyond Husserl and Heidegger. In particular, this applies to the cosmological ontology that Fink developed after World War II, aimed at overcoming metaphysics while combining ontology with the rigorous method of phenomenology and a cosmological interpretation of being. In this regard, Hegel appeared to Fink as the first Western philosopher who had conceived the ground of beings (...) without basing on ontic models, that is, as dynamical genesis of the structure of the world and human experience. The aim of the paper is to deepen Fink’s interpretation of Hegel’s philosophy and to show how (and to what extent) Hegel is not a metaphysical thinker in this perspective. Em Meditaciones del Quijote e Ideias sobre la novela o filósofo espanhol José Ortega y Gasset passa dos campos da filosofia à teoria literária, chegando até mesmo à técnica da ficção. Tal perspectiva pode ser útil para um diálogo mais amplo entre os campos da filosofia e da escrita criativa. O artigo estabelece elementos para uma possível “arte do romance” a partir dessas obras de Ortega y Gasset. O autor espanhol considerava que o romance evoluiu enormemente com a obra de (...) Miguel de Cervantes, passando a ser um “gênero moroso”, de atmosfera, ao contrário das narrativas tradicionais, da épica e dos romances de aventura focados na ação e nas peripécias mais que na “psicologia imaginária” dos personagens. O filósofo critica o que considerava ser o vício das narrativas antigas na “droga da imaginação”, ou elementos de fuga da realidade. O artigo aborda contribuições orteguianas para a arte do romance, concluindo com o que poderia ser uma linha crítica a alguns dos mais utilizados manuais de roteiro e escrita criativa atuais, geradores dos mesmos elementos outrora combatidos pelo filósofo. The essay focuses on Jeff Wall’s theoretical writings and artistic productions. The inquiry on the photograph’s medium has been re-enacted in the late 1970s and 1980s by the use of the large scale and the “tableau-form”; in Wall’s work the large scale of the images, coupled with the light box, stimulates at the same time a new relationship with the beholder’s gaze and the possibility of a historical dialogue with other media, like painting and cinema. By the analysis of photographs (...) like Mimic and A view from an Apartment the interplay between document and fiction, capture of everyday and mise en scène appears at the core of Wall’s research and a main subject in contemporary photography. As is well known, Roman Ingarden and Edith Stein had a deep intellectual relationship and friendship, which began during their stay in Göttingen and Freiburg. The time spent together during this period and the correspondence that they maintained over the following years allowed them to be in close contact with their respective philosophies and to influence each other. This article aims at illustrating the affinities between Ingarden’s description of soul in § 78 of Controversy over the Existence of the World (...) and the analysis of soul and psyche developed by Stein between 1916 and 1922. Furthermore, it aims at presenting the hypothesis that this analysis influenced the formal anthropology elaborated by the Polish philosopher many years later. Both the depiction of the soul as a personal nucleus that manifests itself in human lived experiences and the description of this manifestation through the notion of “force” are theoretical elements that are essential in Ingarden’s mature ontology of man and that already played a crucial role in Stein’s early writings. Both thinkers, within several years of one another, elaborated an anthropological view that does not have the life of consciousness as a primary guideline, but that brings to light the ontological relevance of the unitary psychic source of human dispositions, of human character, and of consciousness itself. Cabe-nos, ainda, a tarefa de investigar e reconstruir as contribuições filosóficas da Escolástica Tardia desenvolvida no escopo do humanismo jurídico que permitiram a sistematização do conceito de ius communicationis. Nossa reconstrução partirá de uma tríplice fundamentação epistemológica frequentemente utilizada pelo autor, a saber, o estatuto da dúvida, da certeza e da opinião. A discussão, prima facie, se concentra em duas de suas principais (...) conferências internacionalistas sobre o problema da colonização da América. We advance a critical examination of two recent branches of the enactivist research program, namely, Radically Enactive Cognition (Hutto & Myin, 2013, 2017) and Linguistic Bodies (Di Paolo et al. 2018). We argue that, although these approaches may look like diverging views within the wider enactivist program, when appraised in a conciliatory spirit, they can be interpreted as developing converging ideas. We examine how the notion of know-how figures in them in order to show an important point of convergence, namely, (...) that the normativity of human cognitive capacities rests on shared know-how. Radical enactivism emphasizes the diachronic dimension of shared know-how, and linguistic bodies emphasizes the synchronic one. Given that know-how is a normative notion, it is subject to success conditions. We then argue it implies basic content, which is the content of the successful ongoing interactions between agent(s) and environment. Basic content does not imply accuracy conditions and representational content, so it evades Hutto & Myin's (2013) Hard Problem of Content. Moreover, this account is amenable to the central claim by Di Paolo et al. (2018) that the participatory sense-making relations at play in linguistic exchanges are explained in continuity with explanations of biological organization and sensorimotor engagements. (shrink)

This article addresses the contributions of the literature on the new mechanistic philosophy of science for the scientific practice of model building in ecology. This is reflected in a one-to-one interdisciplinary collaboration between an ecologist and a philosopher of science during science-in-the-making. We argue that the identification, reconstruction and understanding of mechanisms is context-sensitive, and for this case study mechanistic modeling did not present a normative role but a heuristic one. We expect our study to provides useful epistemic tools for (...) the improvement of empirically-riven work in the debates about mechanistic explanation of ecological phenomena. (shrink)

The phenomenological interpretation of the human being is not a naturalistic explanation. Likewise phenomenology does not interpret the human being as an example of a complex animal: from a phenomenological point of view man is not an animal, inasmuch as his definition and his essence imply a specifically human component, which cannot be attributed to the linear development of animal complexity. However, this does not mean that any animal component is excluded from the structure of humans. How can human animality (...) be acknowledged without denying human specificity and upholding a reductionist view? The purpose of the paper is to analyse and compare two different ways in which the phenomenological tradition has answered this question. (shrink)
