Aunque Jusep Torres Campalans, la peculiar creación literaria de Max Aub, ha venido siendo objeto de numerosos comentarios, estudios y exposiciones, la peripecia editorial de la obra –un aspecto determinante para su adecuada valoración y recepción– apenas si ha captado el interés que merece hasta la fecha. Con el propósito de suplir esa carencia, el artículo se detiene en primera instancia en el marco intencional y coyuntural de su primera aparición y despliega después un ejercicio adaptado de (...) bibliografía analítica donde la edición príncipe es objeto de un somero análisis estructural y formal y se ve después sometida a contraste con todas y cada una de las ediciones en distintos idiomas que, desde 1958, se han venido sucediendo. Más allá de atender a las distintas versiones de una obra caracterizada en origen por una cuidada articulación de palabra, imagen y hechura material, el artículo aspira a promover la reflexión sobre el riesgo que entrañan ciertas rutinas editoriales para aquellas obras literarias que desbordan los márgenes de la convención. Nelson Maldonado-Torres argues that European modernity has become inextricable from the experience of the warrior and conqueror. In _Against War_, he develops a powerful critique of modernity, and he offers a critical response combining ethics, political theory, and ideas rooted in Christian and Jewish thought. Maldonado-Torres focuses on the perspectives of those who inhabit the underside of western modernity, particularly Jewish, black, and Latin American theorists. He analyzes the works of the Jewish Lithuanian-French philosopher and religious thinker Emmanuel (...) Levinas, the Martiniquean psychiatrist and political thinker Frantz Fanon, and the Catholic Argentinean-Mexican philosopher, historian, and theologian Enrique Dussel. Considering Levinas’s critique of French liberalism and Nazi racial politics, and the links between them, Maldonado-Torres identifies a “master morality” of dominion and control at the heart of western modernity. This master morality constitutes the center of a warring paradigm that inspires and legitimizes racial policies, imperial projects, and wars of invasion. Maldonado-Torres refines the description of modernity’s war paradigm and the Levinasian critique through Fanon’s phenomenology of the colonized and racial self and the politics of decolonization, which he reinterprets in light of the Levinasian conception of ethics. Drawing on Dussel’s genealogy of the modern imperial and warring self, Maldonado-Torres theorizes race as the naturalization of war’s death ethic. He offers decolonial ethics and politics as an antidote to modernity’s master morality and the paradigm of war. _Against War_ advances the de-colonial turn, showing how theory and ethics cannot be conceived without politics, and how they all need to be oriented by the imperative of decolonization in the modern/colonial and postmodern world. Putting feelings into words, or “affect labeling,” can attenuate our emotional experiences. However, unlike explicit emotion regulation techniques, affect labeling may not even feel like a regulatory process as it occurs. Nevertheless, research investigating affect labeling has found it produces a pattern of effects like those seen during explicit emotion regulation, suggesting affect labeling is a form of implicit emotion regulation. In this review, we will outline research on affect labeling, comparing it to reappraisal, a form of explicit emotion regulation, (...) along four major domains of effects—experiential, autonomic, neural, and behavioral—that establish it as a form of implicit emotion regulation. This review will then speculate on possible mechanisms driving affect labeling effects and other remaining unanswered questions. (shrink)

Based on Maldonado-Torres’s formulation of the term, we conceive the decolonial turn as a form of liberating and decolonising reason beyond the liberal and Enlightened emancipation of rationality, and beyond the more radical Euro-critiques that have failed to consistently challenge the legacies of Eurocentrism and white male heteronormativity (often Eurocentric critiques of Eurocentrism). We complement Maldonado-Torres’s account of the decolonial turn in philosophy, theory and critique by providing an analysis of the trajectories of academic philosophy and clarifying the (...) relevance of decolonising philosophy and of the decolonial turn for current efforts in transforming philosophy in face of the challenges of social movements such as the Third World Liberation Front and Black Lives Matter in the United States, and Rhodes Must Fall in South Africa and England. After a brief analysis of the trajectory and current status of philosophy as a discipline in the modern Western research university, we provide examples of the decolonial turn and of decolonising philosophy in three areas: the engagement with (1) Asian and (2) Latin American philosophies, and (3) debates in the philosophy of race and gender. La influencia de la filosofía positivista ha propiciado que, en el mundo contemporáneo, se tienda a identificar verdad y objetividad. Este artículo se propone argumentar que: a) el concepto de objetividad es una reducción indebida del concepto clásico de verdad; b) las premisas en las que se basa la teoría de la objetividad no son axiomáticas, como parecen, y conducen a contradicciones; c) es necesaria una rehabilitación de la concepción realista de verdad, libre de las ataduras del pensamiento positivista.

The aim of the present study was to determine statistical differences in a set of badminton competition matches in five different modalities with regard to competition level (Group Phase versus Eliminatory Phase). Data from 453 sets (125 in men’s singles; 108 sets in women’s singles; 77 sets in men’s doubles; 73 in women’s doubles and 70 in mixed doubles) from the RIO 2016 Olympics Games were recorded and classified in two groups of variables to analyse variables related to match (5) (...) and set (15). A descriptive analysis and univariate test (Mann Whitney U) for non-parametric data were conducted. The results show in men’s and women’s singles all the variables related to match were higher in the Elimination Phase than in the Group Phase (p<0.01). In Sets 1 and 3, the longest set duration, rally and average rally were found in the Elimination Phase than Group Stage (p<0.05). In women’s singles, these differences were also recorded in Set 2. For doubles, the results are more stable among groups. Men’s doubles had a longer duration of the match and set (set 1 and set 2) (p<0.01), and also scored highest for average rally strokes (set 1 and set 3) (p<0.05) and shuttles used in the Elimination Phase versus the Group Phase along the match (p<0.01). In women’s doubles, more shuttles were used in a match in the Elimination than in the Group Phase. Moreover, the same results are established for Set 2, including for average rally. Mixed doubles saw no match going to three sets. However, the greatest differences showed a longer rally and average rally being registered in the Elimination than in the Group Phase. In conclusion, the timing factors of the badminton singles and doubles games were different in the Elimination and Group Phases. This information may help players and coaches prepare and administer different types of workouts or, more specifically, competition schedules adapted to the characteristics of modern badminton. The Collapse of the Rule of Law. The Messina Earthquake and the State of Exception Messina, a Sicilian town, was devasteted by an earthquake in1908. It was an hecatomb. Stricken through this unfathomable disgrace Messina’s institutions and civil society collapsed and a sort of wild natural state replaced the rule of law. In this situation there was a first intervention of the Russian Czarist navy who came to help but immediately enforced cruel emergency measures. The Italian army followed and there (...) was a formal declaration of an ‘emergency situation.’ Around this event and the several exceptional measures taken by the government a debate took place about the legality of those exceptional measures. The article tries to reconstruct the historical context and the content of that debate and in a broader perspective thematizes how law (and morality) could be brought to meet the breaking of normality and ordinary life by an unexpected and catastrophic event. The present article exposes the reasons which Jean Baudrillard says that it there is a loss of aesthetic illusion in the art-object of the simulation. Those reasons would prevent to the new artistic piece the chance to generate a symbolic level and it would lead to disappearance of the art. That is the reason which Baudrillard’s thought is designated apocalyptic. The article’s hypothesis is that the loss of aesthetic illusion announced by Baudrillard can be understood analyzing the way in that (...) technology transforms the experience between the men and the objects in the capitalist system. Thus, in terms of method, the artistic image is seen like a sign-object inside the society and it is in the middle of two ways to mean the experiences: the representation and the simulation. In the margin of the thesis’s results, which are the foundation of this text, the article’s final section recommends to pay attention to a double apocalyptic condition in Baudrillard, this with the purpose to realize that the French sociologist doesn’t deny the possibility to find in the technologic process the ironic return of the illusion. De se attitudes seem to play a special role in action and cognition. This raises a challenge to the traditional way in which mental attitudes have been understood. In this chapter, we review the case for thinking that de se attitudes require special theoretical treatment and discuss various ways in which the traditional theory can be modified to accommodate de se attitudes.

This paper examines and analyzes five definitions of ‘existential risk.’ It tentatively adopts a pluralistic approach according to which the definition that scholars employ should depend upon the particular context of use. More specifically, the notion that existential risks are ‘risks of human extinction or civilizational collapse’ is best when communicating with the public, whereas equating existential risks with a ‘significant loss of expected value’ may be the most effective definition for establishing existential risk studies as a legitimate field of (...) scientific and philosophical inquiry. In making these arguments, the present paper hopes to provide a modicum of clarity to foundational issues relating to the central concept of arguably the most important discussion of our times. La astrobioética es el estudio de las implicancias éticas de la búsqueda de vida en el universo. En esta constante, el ser humano trata de encontrar una respuesta a la pregunta milenaria sobre si estamos o no solos en el universo. Sin embargo, existen retos éticos que debemos afrontar si alguna vez llegamos a dar con esta respuesta, desde saber qué hacer si acaso encontramos vida microbiana en un planeta, hasta la de nuestra actitud frente a una posible detección de (...) vida inteligente. No importa qué forma de vida sea, existirá una reacción por parte de nosotros, y ello no se limitará a una cuestión meramente tecnológica. ¿Necesitaremos crear zonas de protección planetaria para posibles formas de vida microbiana extraterrestre?, ¿tendremos que desarrollar formas actualizadas de empatía para el cuidado preventivo de vida extraterrestre? Además, la astrobioética también aborda la problemática del futuro de la humanidad en el universo, la consideración de nosotros como especie multi e interplanetaria. ¿Será el hecho de convertirnos en una especie multiplanetaria la respuesta a los problemas éticos humanos?, ¿tendrán más voz los países con mayor influencia los que determinen finalmente cuál código ético interplanetario deberíamos desarrollar? Esta y otras cuestiones son las que reflejan algunas de las reflexiones astrobioéticas en torno a la búsqueda y expansión de la vida en el universo. (shrink)

Will it rain tomorrow? Will there be a sea battle tomorrow? Will my death be painful? Wondering about the future plays a central role in our cognitive lives. It is integral to our inquiries, our planning, our hopes, and our fears. The aim of this paper is to consider various accounts of future contingents and the implications that they have for wondering about the future. I argue that reflecting on the nature of wondering about the future supports an Ockhamist account (...) of future contingents according to which many of them are true. Alternative accounts which maintain that no future contingents are true, either by claiming that they are all false or by claiming that they are neither true nor false, face difficulties concerning why it is appropriate to wonder about them. Reflecting on wondering in general, and wondering about the future in particular, suggests that in wondering how the future will go, we implicitly assume that there is a determinate fact of the matter. After presenting an attractive account of interrogative attitudes that has been recently proposed by Jane Friedman and outlining some norms governing wondering, I argue that all accounts of future contingents except Ockhamism face difficulties concerning why it is appropriate to wonder about them. In this article, I introduce a semiosic translation of Wittgenstein’s Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. The theoretical framework is Semiosic Translation, a theory that combines Peirce’s interpretive semiotics and Wittgenstein’s notions of rule-following and complex-fact. I seek to show that this approach is particularly adroit at the task of making the sometimes cryptic philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein accessible to readers. To support this assertion, I compare and analyze several canonical translations of the Tractatus with possible semiosic translations. The results show that Wittgenstein’s work (...) throughout its different phases displays a continuity that reaches a genuine abductive peak in the Philosophical Investigations. This abductive, usage-based turn is, nonetheless, announced in the Tractatus in terms of a quest for semiotic accuracy. (shrink)

This article examines Aristotle's views concerning the possibility of friendship between human beings and nonhuman animals. The suggestion that he denies this possibility is rejected. I reassess the textual evidence adduced by scholars in support of this reading, while adding new material for discussion. Central to the traditional reading is the assumption that animals, in Aristotle's view, cannot be friends in virtue of their cognitive limitations. I argue that Aristotle's account of animal cognition is perfectly consistent with the possibility of (...) friendship between human beings and nonhuman animals. (shrink)

This paper forges links between early analytic philosophy and the posits of semiotics. I show that there are some striking and potentially quite important, but perhaps unrecognized, connections between three key concepts in Wittgenstein’s middle and later philosophy, namely, complex, rule-following, and language games. This reveals the existence of a conceptual continuity between Wittgenstein’s “early” and “later” philosophy that can be applied to the analysis of the iterability of representation in computer-generated images. Methodologically, this paper clarifies to at least some (...) degree, the nature, progress and promise of an approach to doing philosophy and semiotics from a modally modest perspective that sees in the intellectual products of humanities, and not in unreflective empiricism, the future of scientific development. This hybrid, non-reductionist approach shows, among other things, that semiotic processes are encoded by specific types of complexes in computer-generated images that display iterability in time and space. Este trabajo analiza las características de las prácticas de intervención y el desarrollo disciplinar de la Psicología Comunitaria en el país. El estudio se organizó a partir de los antecedentes aportados por distintas investigaciones que plantean la existencia de un desfase entre el marco disciplinar y las practicas de intervención. La investigación se llevó a cabo en una muestra de psicólogos de la Provincia de Valparaíso (N=51), quienes respondieron a un cuestionario y luego una sub muestra (N= 5) que fueron (...) entrevistados. Además, se aplicó una entrevista abierta a 8 académicos nacionales de reconocida trayectoria en la disciplina. Los resultados confirmaron en su conjunto que los contenidos del desfase se han agudizado, priorizando por intervenciones individuales centradas en la mejora contingente de las condiciones de vida y salud mental de los participantes. El trabajo concluye que es necesario repensar los contenidos y objetivos de la disciplina en el contexto nacional para retomar el énfasis en la transformación social que es consustancial a la disciplina. La presente obra hace un recorrido filosófico y pedagógico sobre el pensamiento y la acción. Estructurada en dos partes -Realidad, persona y conocimiento, y Relaciones humanas y formación-, aborda temas tan esenciales como actuales. Los procesos antropológicos, éticos y pedagógicos de optimización y de adecuación de las personas exigen, de manera necesaria, un planteamiento inicial que aborde la cuestión de la finalidad, pues todo objetivo, por parcial, responde a una concepción global previa. Ésta se estructura conforme al conocimiento que se (...) tiene de aquello sobre lo que se va a actuar, a la vez que lo hace sobre el fin último pretendido. En el caso del ser humano, especialmente, el conocimiento de su naturaleza resulta primordial para afinar muy bien la finalidad perseguida. El desenfoque en este aspecto invalida las acciones particulares y acarrea la ruina de todo proyecto. En efecto, conocer y tener en cuenta las condiciones y los procedimientos, así como los objetivos y las finalidades, no puede desligarse de las posibilidades reales de la actuación, las cuales, a su vez, gravitan sobre la realidad, sobre lo que hay, sobre la firmeza y la potencia de lo dado. Ni el pensamiento ni la acción pueden ser una hoja en blanco que soporte todo garabato, llámese teoría, plan de acción o utopía. Hasta el deseo ha de ser razonable si no se quiere ver frustrado. Estas cuestiones acerca del fundamento son tratadas en la primera parte de esta obra. En ella se abordan las relaciones entre la existencia y el conocimiento, entre la verdad y la inteligencia, entre la interioridad y el ser, así como el proceso y las repercusiones que tienen tanto el desconocimiento como la negación de la realidad antropológica del ser humano. Por lo que respecta a la segunda parte, en ella se afrontan los desafíos planteados por la vulnerabilidad de la condición humana, y por la necesidad de perfeccionar el tratamiento de la mejora del ser humano a través de la acción educativa. La sabiduría es virtud que debe ser alcanzada para vivir bien, y no sólo objeto de indagación filosófica. Pues bien, si puede hablarse de un comienzo del saber y del saber-hacer, es decir, de un initium sapientiae, podremos plantearnos seria y rigurosamente qué hacer con uno mismo, con los demás y con todo lo demás. Solamente resta desear que el contenido de las siguientes páginas sea capaz de suscitar interés y, lo que es más importante, conocimientos y ánimo para disponerse de forma adecuada, esto es, filosófica y pedagógicamente, al pensamiento y a la acción. What is the relationship between Frege’s puzzle and the puzzle of the de se? An increasingly influential view claims that the de se puzzle is merely an instance of Frege’s puzzle and that the idea that de se attitudes pose a distinctive theoretical challenge rests on a myth. Here we argue that this view is misguided. There are important differences between the two puzzles. First, unlike Frege puzzle cases, de se puzzle cases involve unshareable Fregean senses. Second, unlike Frege puzzle (...) cases, de se puzzle cases cannot be resolved by objective information alone. Further, there seem to be pure cases of each puzzle: instances of the de se puzzle which do not have a Fregean structure, and instances of Frege’s puzzle, which do not involve de se attitudes. We conclude that the two puzzles are fundamentally different and that the traditional theory of attitudes needs to be amended. (shrink)

This chapter argues that dual-use emerging technologies are distributing unprecedented offensive capabilities to nonstate actors. To counteract this trend, some scholars have proposed that states become a little “less liberal” by implementing large-scale surveillance policies to monitor the actions of citizens. This is problematic, though, because the distribution of offensive capabilities is also undermining states’ capacity to enforce the rule of law. I will suggest that the only plausible escape from this conundrum, at least from our present vantage point, is (...) the creation of a “supersingleton” run by a friendly superintelligence, founded upon a “post-singularity social contract.” In making this argument, the present chapter offers a novel reason for prioritizing the “control problem,” i.e., the problem of ensuring that a greaterthan-human-level AI will positively enhance human well-being. This article introduces Agentive Cognitive Construction Grammar, an emerging field that seeks to connect the linguistic system with speaker-meaning. The stated purpose is thus to tackle a pervasive disconnect in both cognitive linguistics and construction grammar, whereby the linguistic system and speaker selections are separated in the belief that language is essentially a mental process associated with the brain, and hence, separated from bodily experience. I contend this view by introducing a triadic model of construction in which form and function (...) are inextricably bound up with agency. This is possible because language is tethered to senses of movement and balance that connect experiences with the physical world with the mental. A major insight of the paper is that argument structure constructions partake of both linguistic and non-linguistic signs, which provides speakers with a means to verbalize their thoughts and distribute agency in specific events. The aim of this paper is to explore the connections between semiotics and biology by examining the behaviors of both humans and non-cognizant agents, using Bayesian and heuristic inference. The argument is that higher-level organisms use complex predictive reasoning to deal with uncertainty, while non-cognizant species, such as SARS-CoV-2, rely on an economy-driven heuristic to enter host cells. From this viewpoint, the current pandemic is characterized as a clash of representations resulting from the anthropocentric construction of the self, which neglects (...) the complexities of the natural world.
