    Alfonso X, Cantiga 235, and the Events of 1269–1278.Richard P. Kinkade - 1992 - Speculum 67 (2):284-323.
Of the more than four hundred poems written in praise of the Virgin Mary either by Alfonso the Wise or at his behest and known collectively as the Cantigas de Santa María, five in particular, Cantigas 209, 235, 279, 366, and 367, are of inestimable benefit to the historian for the explicit descriptions they provide of the king's ill health and suffering. Cantiga 235 is the most valuable of these informative compositions both for its broad historical perspectives and for its (...)

The Constitution of the Sea: New boundaries and identity through watery, transdisciplinary artistic practice.Kat Austen - 2024 - Technoetic Arts 22 (2):183-196.
What is it to be the sea? Explorations of the constitution of the sea – what it comprises, where its borders are, how it incorporates novel entities – offer meaningful insights into the nature of boundaries and identity that are as relevant for humans as they are for the imperilled oceans. At the advent of the post-Anthropocene, when global processes perceptibly react to human impacts, this article elaborates on watery artistic investigations inspired by the mutability and permeability of seas. Anchoring (...)

Information‐Theoretic Properties of Auditory Sequences Dynamically Influence Expectation and Memory.Kat Agres, Samer Abdallah & Marcus Pearce - 2018 - Cognitive Science 42 (1):43-76.
A basic function of cognition is to detect regularities in sensory input to facilitate the prediction and recognition of future events. It has been proposed that these implicit expectations arise from an internal predictive coding model, based on knowledge acquired through processes such as statistical learning, but it is unclear how different types of statistical information affect listeners’ memory for auditory stimuli. We used a combination of behavioral and computational methods to investigate memory for non-linguistic auditory sequences. Participants repeatedly heard (...)

Music Therapy During COVID-19: Changes to the Practice, Use of Technology, and What to Carry Forward in the Future.Kat R. Agres, Katrien Foubert & Siddarth Sridhar - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12:647790.
In recent years, the field of music therapy (MT) has increasingly embraced the use of technology for conducting therapy sessions and enhancing patient outcomes. Amidst a worldwide pandemic, we sought to examine whether this is now true to an even greater extent, as many music therapists have had to approach and conduct their work differently. The purpose of this survey study is to observe trends in how music therapists from different regions around the world have had to alter their practice, (...)

Assigning Punishment: Reader Responses to Crime News.Kat Albrecht & Janice Nadler - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
In this study we test how the composition of crime news articles contributes to reader perceptions of the moral blameworthiness of vehicular homicide offenders. After employing a rigorous process to develop realistic experimental vignettes about vehicular homicide in Minnesota, we deploy a survey to test differential assignments of suggested punishment. We find that readers respond to having very little information by choosing neutral or mid-point levels of punishment, but increase recommended punishment based on information about morally charged conduct. By contrast, (...)

Clothing Inventions as Acts of Citizenship? The Politics of Material Participation, Wearable Technologies, and Women Patentees in Late Victorian Britain.Kat Jungnickel - 2023 - Science, Technology, and Human Values 48 (1):9-33.
This article is about clothing inventions, material participation, and acts of citizenship. I explore how pioneering Victorian women at the turn of the last century inventively responded via clothing to restrictions to their (physical and ideological) freedom of movement. While the bicycle is typically celebrated as a primary vehicle of women’s emancipation at that time, I argue that inventive forms of clothing, such as convertible cycling skirts, also helped women make claims to rights and privileges otherwise legally denied to their (...)

Bogdanov, Marx, and the limits to growth debate.Yefim Kats - 2004 - The European Legacy 9 (3):305-316.
Bogdanov is a major rival to the philosophical orthodoxy of Plekhanov and Lenin. We explicate the foundational notions of his philosophy—praxis and experience—and trace his revisionism to Kant, Fichte, Mach, and Spencer. We show that Bogdanov's approach represents a predominantly pragmatic reading of Marx, influenced by the empiricism of Mach and Spencer as well as by Kantian apriorism. Bogdanov's version of Unified Science—Tektology—is considered against his philosophical background. The concept of praxis is at the center of the controversy between Marxist (...)

Judaism and human geography.Yosef Kats - 2021 - Boston: Academic Studies Press.
Judaism is a religion and a way of life that combines beliefs as well as practical commandments and traditions, encompassing all spheres of life. Some of the numerous precepts emerge directly from the Torah (the Law of Moses). Others are commanded by Oral Law, rulings of illustrious Jewish legal scholars throughout the generations, and rabbinic responsa composed over hundreds of years and still being written today. Like other religions, Judaism has also developed unique symbols that have become virtually exclusive to (...)

Entraining IDyOT: Timing in the Information Dynamics of Thinking.Jamie Forth, Kat Agres, Matthew Purver & Geraint A. Wiggins - 2016 - Frontiers in Psychology 7:196169.
We present a novel hypothetical account of entrainment in music and language, in context of the Information Dynamics of Thinking model, IDyOT. The extended model affords an alternative view of entrainment, and its companion term, pulse, from earlier accounts. The model is based on hierarchical, statistical prediction, modeling expectations of both what an event will be and when it will happen. As such, it constitutes a kind of predictive coding, with a particular novel hypothetical implementation. Here, we focus on the (...)
