The article attempts to reconstruct the solution of the fundamental for the Anglo-American historical school (T. Kuhn, I. Lakatos, P. Feyerabend) problem of incommensurability, proposed by Helmut Spinner, a prominent representative of German critical rationalism (hereinafter referred to as CR). It is shown that this solution became possible on the way of rethinking the shortcomings of the orthodox CR of K. Popper and H. Albert, the main one of which Spinner saw in “scarcity” pluralism and criticism. To overcome it, (...) he considered it necessary to develop the KR in the direction of “pluralistically extended fallibilist criticism” of the Feyerabend persuasion with some innovations. Spinner’s new version of the CR, was based on the following three fundamental principles: 1) the principle of radicalization of pluralism (hyperpluralism); 2) the principle of the infallibility of fallibilism (hyperfallibilism) (Fallubilität des Fallibilismus); 3) the principle (requirement) of the minimum commensurability of theories. The essence and content of the third principle is as follows. Minimal commensurability means that competing theories are commensurate, at least in one essential point: commensurability of this kind is mediated by “transition theories”. Incommensurable theories are by no means useless, for thanks to “transition theories” they can become commensurate, at least in a minimal sense. And this minimum commensurability is the most essential and desirable for theoretical pluralism, since only it provides the maximum criticism of alternative theories, thereby expanding the possibilities of confrontation and strengthening pluralistic criticism in general. These are the proceedings of Physics and Reality 2024, International Conference on Philosophy of Physics, held at University of Helsinki, Finland, 4-6 June 2024. -/- The conference was organised by the research project Appearance and Reality in Physics and Beyond that started in June 2023. The project is located in the Department of Philosophy, History and Art Studies, University of Helsinki. -/- The conference explored central themes in philosophy of physics, including interpretations of quantum theory, geometric vs. dynamic approaches to (...) relativistic phenomena, the project of unifying quantum theory and general relativity, and extending quantum theory to new domains. We question Spelke's key claim that the medium, in which contents from different core knowledge systems can be represented and combined, is language-based. Recalling an episodic memory, playing chess, and conducting mental rotation are tasks where core knowledge information is represented and combined. Although these tasks can be described by means of language, these tasks are not inherently language-based. Hence, language may be an important subset of an abstraction medium – not the medium as such.

Many different professionals play a key role in maintaining welfare in a welfare society. These professionals engage in moral judgements when using (new) technologies. In doing so, they achieve that radical responsibility towards the other that Levinas describes as being at the very core of ethics. Also, professionals try to assess the possible consequences of the involvement of specific technologies and adjust their actions in order to ensure ethical responsibility. Thus, ethics is necessary in order to obtain and sustain one's (...) professionalism. This presents care institutions with the challenge to design work processes and technology work in ways that include a sense of ‘the Other’ and make moral judgement an indispensable part of professional competence in technology. This article provides new understandings of the way ethics are involved in care institutions. Nurses’ moral judgements are sophisticated with regard to ethical perspectives. In hospitals, nurses combine Latour's notion of symmetry in human/technology relations with an ethics implying ethical priority to human beings over other beings. This combination of ethics is not only sophisticated; it is also paradoxical, as it puts together mutually contradictory ethics. Instead of causing moral confusion, this ethical paradox is employed to produce a particularly refined notion of care situations, allowing nurses’ care to include patients and technology alike. This book offers a unique, critical exploration of concepts and practices of social sustainability through both a critical concept analysis as well as empirical studies of practices that undermine social sustainability. It addresses the questions: What is the main role of social relations and social practice in the transition from fundamentally unsustainable societies and local practices towards a sustainable future? And how does economical sustainability reduce or enhance social sustainability?
