Development of autonoetic autobiographical memory in school-age children: Genuine age effect or development of basic cognitive abilities?Laurence Picard, Isméry Reffuveille, Francis Eustache & Pascale Piolino - 2009 - Consciousness and Cognition 18 (4):864-876.
This study investigated the mechanisms behind episodic autobiographical memory development in school-age children. Thirty children performed a novel EAM test. We computed one index of episodicity via autonoetic consciousness and two indices of retrieval spontaneity for a recent period and a more remote one . Executive functions, and episodic and personal semantic memory were assessed. Results showed that recent autobiographical memories were mainly episodic, unlike remote ones. An age-related increase in the indices of episodicity and specific spontaneity for recent AMs (...)

  2. In Defense of Pure Reason: A Rationalist Account of a Priori Justification.Laurence BonJour - 1998 - Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.
This book is concerned with the alleged capacity of the human mind to arrive at beliefs and knowledge about the world on the basis of pure reason without any dependence on sensory experience. Most recent philosophers reject the view and argue that all substantive knowledge must be sensory in origin. Laurence BonJour provocatively reopens the debate by presenting the most comprehensive exposition and defence of the rationalist view that a priori insight is a genuine basis for knowledge. This important (...)

Individual and couple decision behavior under risk: evidence on the dynamics of power balance.André Palma, Nathalie Picard & Anthony Ziegelmeyer - 2011 - Theory and Decision 70 (1):45-64.
This article reports results of an experiment designed to analyze the link between risky decisions made by couples and risky decisions made separately by each spouse. We estimate both the spouses and the couples’ degrees of risk aversion, we assess how the risk preferences of the two spouses aggregate when they make risky decisions, and we shed light on the dynamics of the decision process that takes place when couples make risky decisions. We find that, far from being fixed, the (...)

    Repenser l'enfance?Alain Kerlan & Laurence Loeffel (eds.) - 2012 - Paris: Hermann.

What a Philosopher Is: Becoming Nietzsche.Laurence Lampert - 2017 - London: University of Chicago Press.
The trajectory of Friedrich Nietzsche’s thought has long presented a difficulty for the study of his philosophy. How did the young Nietzsche—classicist and ardent advocate of Wagner’s cultural renewal—become the philosopher of Will to Power and the Eternal Return? With this book, Laurence Lampert answers that question. He does so through his trademark technique of close readings of key works in Nietzsche’s journey to philosophy: The Birth of Tragedy, Schopenhauer as Educator, Richard Wagner in Bayreuth, Human All Too Human, (...)

The Principle of Non-Contradiction in Plato's Republic: An Argument for Form.Laurence Bloom - 2017 - Lanham: Lexington Books.
What sorts of things qualify as first principles of reasoning and what kind of justification for them can be offered? We think of principles like that of non-contradiction as first principles of reasoning. Laurence Bloom argues that Plato’s Republic, the first text that affords us a complete statement of the Principle of Non-contradiction, offers us a powerful, complex and detailed argument for taking form—specifically that of the good—as the first principle of both knowing and being.

Prioritizing Indecent Image Offenders: A Systematic Review and Economic Approach to Understand the Benefits of Evidence-Based Policing Strategies.Susan Giles & Laurence Alison - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
In 2013, there were an estimated 50,000 individuals involved in downloading and sharing indecent images of children in the United Kingdom. This poses challenges for limited police resources. We argue that police officers can make most effective use of limited resources by prioritizing those offenders who pose the greatest risk of contact offending, by nature of demonstrable pedophilia, hebephilia or dual offending status and thus, those at highest risk must be dealt with first. What is currently lacking is a clear (...)

    Querying several conflicting databases.Laurence Cholvy & Christophe Garion - 2004 - Journal of Applied Non-Classical Logics 14 (3):295-327.
This paper addresses the problem of querying several databases considered as a whole. Assuming that the different databases share a common data description language, the problem that arises is to consistently answer queries even if the database contents are contradictory. The main contribution of this paper is the specification of a query-evaluator for answering closed and open general queries addressed to several databases and for providing explanations about the results. For doing so, we first specify a query-evaluator, in logic, which (...)

The implications of induction.Laurence Jonathan Cohen - 1970 - London,: Methuen.
Originally published in 1973. This book presents a valid mode of reasoning that is different to mathematical probability. This inductive logic is investigated in terms of scientific investigation. The author presents his criteria of adequacy for analysing inductive support for hypotheses and discusses each of these criteria in depth. The chapters cover philosophical problems and paradoxes about experimental support, probability and justifiability, ending with a system of logical syntax of induction. Each section begins with a summary of its contents and (...)

Agents of Change: Political Philosophy in Practice.Ben Laurence - 2021 - Cambridge, Massachusetts: Harvard University Press.
Ben Laurence argues for a political philosophy that unifies theory and practice in pursuit of change. He shows that the task of political philosophy is not complete until the political philosopher asks the question "What is to be done?" and deliberates about the answer with agents of change.

    Multiple Arousal Theory and Daily-Life Electrodermal Activity Asymmetry.Rosalind W. Picard, Szymon Fedor & Yadid Ayzenberg - 2016 - Emotion Review 8 (1):62-75.
Using “big data” from sensors worn continuously outside the lab, researchers have observed patterns of objective physiology that challenge some of the long-standing theoretical concepts of emotion and its measurement. One challenge is that emotional arousal, when measured as sympathetic nervous system activation through electrodermal activity, can sometimes differ significantly across the two halves of the upper body. We show that traditional measures on only one side may lead to misjudgment of arousal. This article presents daily life and controlled study (...)

This paper considers the three first clauses of the Pistiros Charter. Closely connected with each other, they show the financial privileges accorded to Greek merchants by the Thracian authorities. The third clause prohibited any annulment of debts. The second may be compared to the δίκη αργυρίου in Athens and apparently concerned inheritances, which explains the recourse to the principle of kinship. In the first we have to restore an oath "purgatoire", by which the dynast denies having received funds demanded of (...)
