Na filosofia continental dos finais do século XVII e inícios do XVIII, Leibniz é o filósofo que mais denodadamente defendeu a necessidade de recuperar a noção de causa final, não só na metafísica mas também na filosofia natural. A rejeição desta causa, ainda que puramente metodológica ou epistémica, é por ele considerada como um dos maiores erros da filosofia moderna. O texto: 1) aborda as razões que levaram Leibniz a defender a necessidade de recupe­ração da causa final; e 2) procura (...) definir o estatuto atribuído a esta causa, tendo em conta que para Leibniz a teleologia tem que ser compatível com a tese de que na natureza tudo se explica mecanicamente. En el presente trabajo estudiamos el concepto de naturaleza en Leibniz y Boyle y la fundamentación que a partir de dicha noción cada uno ofrece del mecanicismo. De modo más específico, proponemos que De ipsa natura de Leibniz se articula como un debate póstumo con A Free Enquiry into the Vulgarly Received Notion of Nature de Boyle, siendo el objetivo inicial del texto leibniziano revisar la concepción boyleana de naturaleza y ofrecer una fundamentación alternativa del mecanicismo que permita introducir una (...) comprensión internalista de las leyes naturales. This paper takes its start from the unpublished Leibnizian manuscript of which a critical edition and an Italian translation are presented by the Author in the same issue of “Discipline filosofiche‘ -- in particular from some passages concerning what we might roughly call teleological projections. A parallel analysis of Leibniz’s and Husserl’s attitudes to the attribution of teleological properties, at various levels of complexity, factuality, ideality, to the natural world and to human history, shows in Husserl’s teleology a mix of (...) ingredients very similar to those of Leibniz’s own one -- ingredients that Husserl always relished -- but with quite different results. On the one hand, for Husserl the universal order is teleologically realised in humanity, albeit with a reference to transcendence that has never been made by him completely clear. On the other hand, perhaps thanks to being unaware of Kant’s future contributions to the field, Leibniz seems more capable to avoid certain naïver forms of teleological attribution to which Husserl might seem more prone. It is certainly true that in early modern thought the emergence of a new science changed the image of the universe in a mechanistic way. It must be considered, though, that most of the main protagonists of this revolution (Kepler, Newton, Leibniz, ‘biologists’ like Leeuwenhoek, Hartsoeker, Hooke, Malpighi, Redi, etc.) still continued to consider the importance and the utility of a finalistic explanation of natural phenomena. Concepts like “function”, “self-organization”, “organism” have roots in early modern thought: not only from a (...) linguistic and semantic point of view. They were the basis of an epistemology in which different kinds of categories are strictly related. The aim of the paper is to take into account the relevance of the mechanical explanation of natural phenomena in Leibniz’s thought and at the same time to highlight the polarization between mechanical explanations and finalistic consideration that emerges in his philosophy. The specific aim of the paper is to analyze and to develop this kind of dialectic between “teleology” and "mechanism", with particular reference to the concept of “living being”. (shrink)

El propósito de este artículo es desarrollar una relectura al mecanicismo moderno. Esto implica que una adecuada comprensión de este consiste, ante todo, en considerarlo como un proyecto antes que un sistema doctrinal consolidado. Para ello se toma como eje la filosofía de Leibniz, la cual, a diferencia del cartesianismo, identifica las inconsistencias que implica concebir el mecanicismo como un sistema filosófico completo, principalmente al pretender justificar mecánicamente el mundo natural, esto es, a partir de la figura, el tamaño y (...) el movimiento. Todo lo anterior no implica un rechazo completo del mecanicismo por parte de Leibniz, sino que permite concebirlo como un medio para desarrollar su filosofía, proponiendo una complementariedad entre la causa final y la causa eficiente. de este modo, el mecanicismo es reubicado como un problema metodológico para la ciencia natural antes que como un problema metafísico. This article aims to develop a second reading to the modern mechanicism. This implies that an appropriate understanding of mechanicism consists, above all, in considering it as a project, instead of a consolidated doctrinal system. To do so, we take Leibniz's philosophy as our building blocks, since unlike the Cartesianism, it does identify the inconsistencies implied when we conceive mechanicism as a complete philosophical system, mainly under the pretension to justify the natural world mechanically, that is, based on the figure, size and movement. It does not imply that Leibniz rejects entirely mechanicism, but allows us to understand it as a mean to develop his philosophy, proposing a complementary relationship between final cause and efficient cause. This way, mechanicism is re-posed as a methodological issue for the natural science instead of a metaphysical issue. (shrink)

It certainly opposes Kant's position in denying the possibility that what seems to be teleological is only mechanical, but not in the sense of a dogmatic commitment to the reality of natural ends or in the sense of a refutation of mechanicism as in Fichte's radicalization of transcendental philosophy. Neste trabalho, nos propomos percorrer algumas etapas do debate sobre a relevância das causas finais nas investigações físicas, que levou Leibniz a confrontar sua filosofia, de modo particular, com o cartesianismo e, mais em geral, com uma concepção estritamente mecanicista da natureza. Serão seguidos aqueles indícios que se encontram na obra de Leibniz, ao procurar pelas referências a Molyneux, um dos primeiros a receber e divulgar a perspectiva leibniziana, e, além disso, um dos poucos interlocutores com os quais se instaurou (...) um diálogo de tons cordiais. Tentaremos mostrar que, todavia, tal troca não polêmica é fruto de um desentendimento de fundo entre os dois intelectuais. (shrink)

Neste artigo, pretende-se indicar como o jovem Leibniz, em textos do início da década de 1670, como no Theoria Motusi e nas correspondências a Johann Friedrich e a Hobbes, apropria-se do conceito de conatus e da teoria da sensação de Hobbes para defender a existência de mentes incorpóreas, seres verdadeiramente indivisíveis, em oposição à redução hobbesiana da realidade a corpos e seus movimentos. Ademais, uma vez que a essência do corpo reside no movimento e não na extensão — como o (...) filósofo afirma influenciado pelas teorias de Hobbes — e que o corpo, de acordo com os princípios do mecanicismo, não é fonte de seu próprio movimento, Leibniz argumentará que a sua substância deve residir em algo incorpóreo. Essa apropriação por parte de Leibniz do conceito de conatus e da teoria do movimento hobbesianos desempenhará, assim, um papel importante não apenas na rejeição da substância extensa cartesiana, como também na posterior reabilitação das formas substanciais, rejeitadas pelo autor na sua primeira juventude. Mediante a análise da coletânea de notas “Zur Teleologie” este artigo sugere a existência de um “proto-perspectivismo” na concepção ficcionalista de organismo formulada por Nietzsche no final da década de 1860. Nossa investigação se inicia com uma exposição da oposição entre mecanicismo e teleologia na modernidade, analisa brevemente as posições de Kant e Schopenhauer sobre ela e então as contrasta com a posição de Nietzsche.

El objetivo del presente escrito es presentar los principales rasgos del atomismo quí­mico que se desarrolla a principios del siglo XVII, ver cómo se desarrolla en el atomismo de Gassendi y la influencia que tienen en la filosofía del joven Leibniz. Tanto la influencia de la corriente alquímica e iatroquímica en este tipo de atomismo, como la separación de algu­nos postulados fundamentales del mecanicismo, tienen una clara influencia en los primeros escritos de Leibniz.

This paper’s aim is to try to answer the critiques made by Leibniz against Descartes’ theory of perception. The first of these critiques concerns the so-called ‘idea-picture’. The answer to this critique will be given on the basis of the Cartesian theory of ‘causal dissimilarity’ between the object of perception and the sensations brought about by it. The second critique refers to the qualia, that is, the supposed disconnection and arbitrariness between the content of the mental representation (the idea) and (...) its material reference. The answer to this critique will be given by means of the psychophysical correlation that Descartes calls ‘institution of nature’. Finally, the last critique relates to the insensibles perceptions. In order to answer this critique, it will be showed that Descartes held that matter is infinitely divisible and consequently he defended that there are many portions of bodies whose perception escapes the reach of our senses. O objetivo do presente artigo é analisar a sugestão feita por Leibniz em um apêndice à única obra de grande porte publicada pelo autor, i.e. os Ensaios de Teodiceia, de que é possível que nenhum mundo tivesse existido ou que Deus poderia não simplesmente não ter criado esse mundo, mas poderia mesmo não ter criado mundo algum, uma posição que, como pretendemos argumentar, pode ser caracterizada como um tipo de niilismo metafísico avant la lettre. Nas seções 1, 2 e 3, (...) pretendemos precisar em que sentido estamos atribuindo uma forma de niilismo metafísico a Leibniz, assim como apresentaremos argumentos exegéticos e sistemáticos para sustentar essa atribuição. Na seção 4, consideraremos a consistência dessa sugestão por parte de Leibniz com o restante da sua metafísica, defendendo que é possível interpretar a última de uma maneira que seja consistente com a primeira. Finalmente, na seção 5, discutiremos as consequências de uma tal interpretação da metafísica leibniziana para a questão clássica da incompossibilidade entre substâncias possíveis, sugerindo então que, uma vez estabelecida a tese do niilismo metafísico no contexto da metafísica de Leibniz, não seria a prevenção estritamente de uma forma de necessitarismo que estaria em jogo na solução do problema, mas sim o estabelecimento de uma pluralidade de mundos possíveis alternativos. Em sua correspondência com Arnaud, Leibniz mostra como o recurso à vontade divina é fundamental para garantir o espaço da contingência no interior de uma metafísica que não permite a indeterminação. No entanto, ainda resta perguntar se a bondade divina, uma das perfeições incluídas na noção de Deus, não torna necessário aquilo que Leibniz chamara de contingente. Por isso faremos um exame da concepção leibniziana de vontade divina, sobretudo a distinção entre vontade antecedente e vontade consequente, visando determinar até que (...) ponto a bondade divina implica ou não um necessitarismo universal. Cualquier estudio focalizado en la ontología propuesta por Leibniz debería prestar atención a conceptos claves, tales como esencias o posibilidades, existencia o actualización, contingencia, necesidad y libertad, entre otros. Al aproximarse a estas nociones, Leibniz reconoció abierta y explícitamente que los temas por los cuales él se interesaba habían sido tratados por Francisco Suárez, René Descartes y Baruch Spinoza. No obstante, se detecta una falta de coincidencia entre las posiciones adoptadas por estos pensadores y las tesis defendidas por Leibniz. Tal (...) diferencia resalta cuando dicho filósofo se propuso explicar, de un modo claro, distinto y conciso, la predisposición de las esencias para existir. Este deseo metafísico trasciende cualquier modalidad de reduccionismo lógico, y si se materializara, el resultado sería una actualización que Leibniz tiene a bien presentar, sin embargo, como contingente y limitada en la mayoría de los casos. Leibniz desenvolve uma intensa actividade filosófico-científica ao longo de um período de mais de cinquenta anos, na procura de uma via da modernidade mais complexa do que o mecanicismo vulgar, que reduz significativamente o campo do saber. A correspondência com Jacob Thomasius, seu professor mais influente, permitiu ao jovem Filósofo uma cuidada reflexão sobre dois tópicos nucleares da sua elaboração teórica – o da continuidade e o da forma –, que são, simultaneamente, motivo de afinidade e de divergência entre ambos. De facto, tal como Thomasius, Leibniz assume a tarefa de conciliar antigos e modernos, mas, diferentemente do seu Mestre, entende que a matriz dessa ciência eclética é a ciência moderna e não a aristotélica. No que diz respeito à forma e mais precisamente à forma subs­tancial, Leibniz concorda com Thomasius que ela é imprescindível na filosofia natural, mas explica a sua génese de modo mecânico, através do movimento. Por seu lado, em virtude do estatuto fenomenal do movimento, a sua causa primordial não poderá ser outra que o próprio espírito. Por conseguinte, a primeira filosofia de Leibniz conjuga mecanicismo e espiritualismo. (shrink)

La noción de finalismo en Gassendi ha sido objeto de interpretaciones críticas en el marco de la historiografía reciente. Desde estas perspectivas, la recurrencia al télos resulta en dos opciones: o es un elemento fuera de su materialismo o tiene visos de vitalismo. En ambos casos significa que Gassendi incluyó en su filosofía principios, estructuras y explicaciones externas al sistema. En este artículo quisiera defender que en el pensamiento de Gassendi se afirma un finalismo natural en el marco de un (...) mecanicismo, al cual podemos denominar teleomecanicismo. Más aún, la inclusión de la finalidad se puede observar en la evolución de la obra de Gassendi, lo que nos permite afirmar que su teleología es un elemento crucial, propio e inmanente de su filosofía natural. La crítica kantiana legó una doble herencia a la biología decimonónica: su noción de ciencia basada en el mecanicismo newtoniano configuró epistemológicamente la teoría de la evolución darwinista, mientras que su comprensión de los organismos se tradujo en una morfología teleológica. En este artículo planteamos dos cuestiones en torno la relación entre las ideas de Kant y Darwin: 1) si Kant habría considerado a Darwin el Newton de la biología, a lo que, con matices, respondemos afirmativamente; 2) si la física (...) newtoniana es hoy suficiente para naturalizar lo orgánico. Nuestra respuesta negativa se fundamenta en las ciencias de la autoorganización y la evo-devo, que permiten plantear la naturalización de la concepción kantiana de los organismos. (shrink)

Known as the Darwin of the twenty-first century, the German biologist Ernst Walter Mayr (1904-2005) studied a great variety of subjects such as Ornithology, Genetics, Evolution, Classification, History, and Philosophy of Biology. This scientist was a giant of the previous century and an icon of Evolutionary Biology. He became famous for his Biological Species Concept and his conclusion that allopatry is the main cause for the origin of species. He provided a decisive contribution to the New Systematics and was the (...) pioneer of the punctuated equilibrium idea. Mayr was one of the main architects of the evolutionary synthesis as also of the Neo-Darwinian wave. Evaluated together, all of his works reveal several elements of his ambition – to organize a philosophical conception inherent for Biology. An assiduous defender of autonomous Biology, Mayr asserted that four sets of factors in Biology differ from those in the Exact Sciences: (I) refutation of essentialism, mechanism, vitalism, and teleology; (II) some physical principles cannot be applied to Biology; (III) absence of general laws in Biology; and (IV) basic principles of biology and their specific character cannot be applied to the inanimate world. The present study took as an axis a minor or even invisible theme from the Ernst Mayr literature and aims to analyze critically the theoretical and epistemological basis that subsidizes – or not– the affirmation that Biology is an autonomous Science. - O biólogo alemão Ernst Walter Mayr (1904-2005), conhecido como o Darwin do século XXI, trabalhou com uma grande variedade de temas: Ornitologia, Genética, Evolução, Classificação, História e Filosofia da Biologia. Esse cientista foi um dos gigantes do século XX e um ícone para a Biologia Evolutiva. Ficou famoso com o seu Conceito Biológico de Espécie e sua conclusão de que a alopatria era a principal causa da origem das espécies. Forneceu uma contribuição decisiva à Nova Sistemática, foi precursor da ideia de equilíbrio pontuado e um dos principais arquitetos da síntese evolutiva, bem como do movimento Neodarwinista. Quando avaliados em conjunto, seus trabalhos revelam os diversos elementos de sua ambição – organizar um corpo de concepções filosóficas próprias da Biologia. Defensor assíduo de uma Biologia autônoma, Mayr afirmou que há quatro conjuntos de fatores que diferenciam a Biologia do conjunto das Ciências Exatas: (I) refutação do essencialismo, do mecanicismo, do vitalismo e da teleologia; (II) convicção de que certos princípios da Física não podem ser aplicados à Biologia; (III) ausência de leis naturais universais em Biologia; e (IV) percepção do caráter único de certos princípios básicos da Biologia não aplicáveis ao mundo inanimado. O presente artigo tomou por eixo um tema aparentemente menor ou mesmo invisível na obra de Ernst Mayr e pretende realizar uma análise crítica acerca de suas bases teóricas e epistemológicas que subsidiaram – ou não – a afirmação da Biologia como uma Ciência autônoma. Este trabajo intenta delinear los ejes centrales de la concepción merleaupontyanade la naturaleza, poniendo especial atención en los últimos cursos del filósofoacerca de la historia del concepto (La nature). El análisis hace escala en lascosmologías presocráticas, la concepción aristotélica de la physis y la interpretación merleaupontyana del mecanicismo y la teleología moderna. Primeramente nos referimos a la crítica de las categorías con que tradicionalmente se hapensado a la physis, crítica fundada en su originaria adscripción a lo humanamente instituido y construido. (...) En segundo lugar, relativizamos esta crítica apartir de la posible consideración de la técnica humana como imitación y extensión de la naturaleza. La evaluación de ambos movimientos de este argumentocircular da lugar a una particular relación de Ineinander o entrelazamiento entre lo natural y lo humano. Reparamos, por último, en la necesidad enfatizadapor Merleau-Ponty de recobrar el significado primordial de la naturaleza como“suelo” y “excedente”. (shrink)

The purpose of this article is to show the reasons, presentin Hobbes’ philosophy, that force us to conclude that God, as sufficientreason that necessitate the entire causal chain, is incompatible with themechanistic system presented by Hobbes in works such as Concerningbody [1655-6] and Leviathan [1651]. For this, I present the foundations ofHobbes’ doctrine of causality, as well as its connection with the mechanicalcausal influx of nature, with the aim of showing that: since all thatexists is body, or God must be (...) corporeal and, thus, not be God — i.e.,does not satisfy the demand of self-sufficient sufficient reason —, or Godis not corporeal and, therefore, does not exist. En la Crítica de la facultad de juzgar, Kant llama la atención sobre ciertos productos de la naturaleza –los organismos- en los que tiene lugar un tipo de causalidad que nos es totalmente desconocida. Los organismos son causas y efectos de sí mismos. No sólo son seres organizados, sino que son capaces también de auto-organizarse. Estas características peculiares de los organismos no pueden ser explicadas por una causalidad mecánica. Mientras que las causas eficientes se dan bajo la forma temporal de (...) una serie descendente, los nexos causales en los organismos se dan bajo la forma temporal de una serie que es, a la vez, descendente y ascendente. En este trabajo, me propongo elucidar hasta qué punto la consideración de los organismos como fines de la naturaleza nos permite traducir la forma temporal de sus nexos causales a una forma temporal que sea conciliable con el principio de la segunda analogía de la experiencia. Artykuł nawiązuje do tekstu O nowym typie monadologii, opublikowanego w „Studiach z Historii Filozofii” (2018, t. 9, nr 4). Zamierzeniem autora jest kontynuowanie pewnych motywów, ale zarazem opisanie relacji nierozciagłościowego aspektu monad do ich rozciągłościowych ekspresji, jakościowości monad oraz ich powiązania z pojęciami współczesnej nauki. Ogólnie rzecz ujmując, chodzi o próbę wypracowania bardziej współczesnego modelu monadologii.

LEIBNIZ AND THE TWO SOPHIES is a critical edition of all of the philosophically important material from the correspondence between the philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716) and his two royal patronesses, Electress Sophie of Hanover (1630-1714), and her daughter, Queen Sophie Charlotte of Prussia (1668-1705). In this correspondence, Leibniz expounds in a very accessible way his views on topics such as the nature and operation of the mind, innate knowledge, the afterlife, ethics, and human nature. The correspondence also contains the (...) only known philosophical writings by Sophie and Sophie Charlotte, and thus provides a valuable insight into their views and concerns, as well as throwing light on their characters. This volume is a critical edition of the eight-year correspondence between Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and Burcher de Volder, professor of philosophy and mathematics at Leiden University. Containing the surviving correspondence between Leibniz and De Volder, the volume also presents a generous selection from the letters between Leibniz and his friend Johann Bernoulli, through whose intercession the correspondence began. Bernoulli acted as intermediary throughout, and the often candid discussions between Leibniz and Bernoulli provide illuminating background to the correspondence proper. This volume is a critical edition of the ten-year correspondence between Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, one of Europe’s most influential early modern thinkers, and Bartholomew Des Bosses, a Jesuit theologian who was keen to bring together Leibniz’s philosophy and the Aristotelian philosophy and religious doctrines accepted by his order. The letters offer crucial insights into Leibniz’s final metaphysics and into the intellectual life of the eighteenth century. Brandon C. Look and Donald Rutherford present seventy-one of Leibniz’s and Des Bosses’s letters in (...) the original Latin and in careful English translation. Few of the letters have been translated into English before. The editors also provide extensive annotations, deletions, and marginalia from Leibniz’s various drafts, and a substantial introduction setting the context for the correspondence and analyzing the main philosophical issues. Although Leibniz's writing forms an enormous corpus, no single work stands as a canonical expression of his whole philosophy. In addition, the wide range of Leibniz's work--letters, published papers, and fragments on a variety of philosophical, religious, mathematical, and scientific questions over a fifty-year period--heightens the challenge of preparing an edition of his writings in English translation from the French and Latin.

The Discourse on Metaphysics is one of Leibniz's fundamental works. Written around January 1686, it is the most accomplished systematic expression of Leibniz's philosophy in the 1680s, the period in which Leibniz's philosophy reached maturity. Leibniz's goal in the Discourse is to give a metaphysics for Christianity; that is, to provide the answers that he believes Christians should give to the basic metaphysical questions. Why does the world exist? What is the world like? What kinds of things exist? And what (...) is the place of human beings in the world? To this purpose Leibniz discusses some of the most traditional topics of metaphysics, such as the nature of God, the purpose of God in creating the world, the nature of substance, the possibility of miracles, the nature of our knowledge, free will, and the justice behind salvation and damnation. Ariew's introduction places the correspondence in historical context and discusses the vibrant philosophical climate of the times. Appendices provide those selections from the works of Newton that Clarke frequently refers to in the correspondence. A bibliography is also included.

Dans sa Theodicee, Leibniz en rappellera lui-meme le sujet central: Un dialogue latin de ma facon, ou je mettais deja en fait que Dieu ayant choisi le plus parfait de tous les mondes possibles, avait ete porte par sa sagesse a permettre (...) le mal qui y etait annexe, mais qui n'empechait pas que tout compte et rabattu ce monde ne fut le meilleur qui put etre choisi. Redigee en 1666 a des fins universitaires (obtention d'un doctorat dans les deux Droits), la Disputatio De Casibus Perplexis in Jure de Leibniz aborde la question de l'ordonnancement juridique, a l'occasion d'une etude consacree aux enonces circulaires apparaissant dans le cadre des affranchissements, des legs et des suretes. Elle montre que leur suppression consiste a retablir un ordre de priorite chronologique ou normatif entre les termes en presence, par la maitrise des relations genre/espece et la formulation de regles justifiant les (...) exceptions. La hierarchie des normes et l'insertion des dispositions derogatoires dans un veritable jus commune, deviennent alors les pierres de touche d'une analyse encore actuelle, dont l'originalite tient au fait qu'elle applique les techniques d'interpretatio legis des Commentateurs du mos italicus, et parvient a les integrer dans une veritable organisation classificatrice du Droit conduisant directement a la codification. Le rationalisme juridique de cette Disputatio devient ainsi l'expression par excellence de trois siecles de doctrine consacres a l'argumentation topique et a la suppression des cas perplexes par l'introduction des circonstances dans l'evaluation des rapports sujet/predicat.
