To a field of study not intensively cultivated by Marxists, Wikse contributes a criticism of what he calls "idiocy," the tendency to regard the self as private property. Whereas earlier writers like L. Sève or A. Schaff focused principally upon psychological and philosophical theories of the person, Wikse directs attention rather to experience, his own and that of others, mainly as this is reflected in language.

On eight Sunday mornings between 15 January 1922 and 12 March 1922 Martin Buber delivered a series of lectures at the Frankfort Freies Jüdisches Lehrhaus, at the request of its director, Franz Rosenzweig. Entitled "Religion als Gegenwart", these lectures provided the stenographer’s copy from which Buber, in subsequent months, wrote his influential work, I and Thou. The present book publishes these lectures for the first time, without translation, and offers as well an historical analysis of the developments in Buber’s thinking (...) that surround the writing of I and Thou.
