  3. Towards context-based disambiguation of mathematical expressions.Magdalena Wolska - unknown
We present a preliminary study on disambiguation of symbolic expressions in mathematical documents. We propose to use the natural language within which the expressions are embedded to resolve their semantics. The approach is based on establishing a similarity between the expression’s discourse context and a set of terms from Term Clusters based on OpenMath Content Dictionaries. The Term Clusters are semi-automatically constructed terminological resources which classify related mathematical concepts into groups. Each group is labelled with a term which represents the (...)

Elektronen, Amseln, Farben. Wovon können unsere nicht-inferentiellen Beobachtungsüberzeugungen handeln?Magdalena Eckes - 2011 - Kriterion - Journal of Philosophy 1 (25):19-30.
What concepts figure in our non-inferential beliefs: "electrons", "cardinals" or color-concepts? Neo-Pragmatists like Sellars, Bran-dom and McDowell took different routes to answer this question. All of these routes rely heavily on the concept of inference. This paper seeks to examine the plausibility of each route while taking a close look on the way "non-inferentiality" is conceived.

  7. Mining, corporate social responsibility and the "community": The case of Rio tinto, Richards Bay minerals and the mbonambi. [REVIEW]Paul Kapelus - 2002 - Journal of Business Ethics 39 (3):275 - 296.
Mining companies have long had a questionable reputation for social responsibility, especially in developing countries. In recent years, mining companies operating in developing countries have come under increased pressure as opponents have placed them under greater public scrutiny. Mining companies have responded by developing global corporate social responsibility strategies as part of their larger global business strategies. In these strategies, a prominent place is given to their relationship with local communities. For business ethics, one basic issue is whether such an (...)

A scoping review of the ethical impacts of international medical electives on local students and patient care.Magdalena Chmura & Shobhana Nagraj - 2024 - BMC Medical Ethics 25 (1):1-8.
Background International electives are often considered a valuable learning opportunity for medical students. Yet, as travelling to lower and middle income countries (LMICs) becomes more common, ethical considerations of such practices emerge. We conducted a scoping review to assess the extent to which five ethical themes were addressed in existing literature about electives, with the aim of investigating the ethical impacts of medical student electives on local resources, patients and clinicians in LMICs. Methods We systematically searched PubMed, Global Health and (...)

Love and Romantic Relationships in the Voices of Patients Who Experience Psychosis: An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis.Magdalena Daria Budziszewska, Małgorzata Babiuch-Hall & Katarzyna Wielebska - 2020 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
Love is a universal experience that most people desire. A serious, long-term, and stigmatized illness makes entering and maintaining close relationships difficult, however. Ten persons, who have been diagnosed with schizophrenia, and lived with their illness for between years and decades of their lifetimes, shared their stories. They reported how the illness has influenced their emotional experiences regarding love and their intimate relationship experiences. We present here a qualitative Interpretative Phenomenological analysis (IPA) of their narratives. This analysis has been done (...)

Gender and Economic Downturn. The Focus on Women and the Pandemic Crisis.Magdalena Tusińska - 2021 - Studies in Logic, Grammar and Rhetoric 66 (4):513-530.
The goal of the paper is to consider whether women are vulnerable or protected on the labour market during the pandemic crisis, seeking answers in the wider context of previous downturns and economic theory. In times of crisis, female employment is likely to be more susceptible to cuts, for several reasons explained i.a. by the flexible buffers hypothesis or sex segregation hypothesis. Since the pandemic crisis is still unfolding, many of its effects are still unknown but it can be expected (...)

  20. Deliberative modality under epistemic uncertainty.Fabrizio Cariani, Magdalena Kaufmann & Stefan Kaufmann - 2013 - Linguistics and Philosophy 36 (3):225-259.
We discuss the semantic significance of a puzzle concerning ‘ought’ and conditionals recently discussed by Kolodny and MacFarlane. We argue that the puzzle is problematic for the standard Kratzer-style analysis of modality. In Kratzer’s semantics, modals are evaluated relative to a pair of conversational backgrounds. We show that there is no sensible way of assigning values to these conversational backgrounds so as to derive all of the intuitions in Kolodny and MacFarlane’s case. We show that the appropriate verdicts can be (...)

Changes that occurred in Poland between 2015 and 2019 have not spared the civil society, here understood broadly as NGOs, activist groups, independent academic organisations and minority communities. This paper is an attempt at reconstructing key ideological arguments that took place within it during that time, as well as their significance and effects on particular organisations both internally and in relation with other participants in the civil society. Also investigated are divisions that arose and their potential consequences in the future. (...)

“We are fed up …Being research objects!” negotiating identities and solidarities in militant ethnography.Magdalena Sztandara - 2021 - Human Affairs 31 (3):262-275.
This article describes experiences of long-term ethnographic fieldwork on disobedience, disloyalty and dissensus among women in public space in selected (post-)Yugoslav cities. I focus on the opportunities and pitfalls of feminist ethnography and methodology in the context of positionality, engagement and solidarity as essential elements of research into activist networks. In order to problematize the emerging field positionalities and solidarities, I examine the “militant ethnography” methodological approach (Jeffrey Juris), which seeks to move beyond the divide between research practice and politically (...)

Consumers’ Perceptions of Corporate Social Responsibility: Scale Development and Validation.Magdalena Öberseder, Bodo B. Schlegelmilch, Patrick E. Murphy & Verena Gruber - 2014 - Journal of Business Ethics 124 (1):101-115.
Researchers and companies are paying increasing attention to corporate social responsibility programs and the reaction to them by consumers. Despite such corporate efforts and an expanding literature exploring consumers’ response to CSR, it remains unclear how consumers perceive CSR and which “Gestalt” consumers have in mind when considering CSR. Academics and managers lack a tool for measuring consumers’ perceptions of CSR. This research explores CPCSR and develops a measurement model. Based on qualitative data from interviews with managers and consumers, the (...)

The main goal of the paper was to obtain insights into how gender measures can be incorporated into quantitative research on risk-related behaviour. We explored relations between the measures (short versions of Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI), Personal Attributes Questionnaire (PAQ), and Traditional Masculinity-Femininity (TMF) scale) and their explanatory power in relation to risky behaviours (Decision Outcome Inventory, DOI). The sample consisted of 470 adults (238 men). The corresponding BSRI and PAQ subscales correlated significantly, while TMF correlated positively with the (...)

Reasoning: New Essays on Theoretical and Practical Thinking.Magdalena Balcerak Jackson & Brendan Jackson (eds.) - 2019 - Oxford University Press.
Philosophers have always recognized the value of reason, but the process of reasoning itself has only recently begun to emerge as a philosophical topic in its own right. Is reasoning a distinctive kind of mental process? If so, what is its nature? How does reasoning differ from merely freely associating thoughts? What is the relationship between reasoning about what to believe and reasoning about how to act? Is reasoning itself something you do, or something that happens to you? And what (...)

Self-compassion and narcissism as mediators of social media’s predicting effect on self-esteem and body image and gender effect: A study on a Polish community sample.Magdalena Mosanya, Patarycja Uram & Dagna Kocur - forthcoming - Polish Psychological Bulletin:11-25.
Extensive social media usage causes psychological dependence and impacts people’s self-evaluations. It is vital to seek possible buffers to social media addiction’s detrimental effect on self-esteem and body image. Poland has one of the highest scores on problematic social media usage. Past studies pointed to narcissism and self-compassion as possible mediators of such effects. The present study aimed to explore Polish individuals’ (N=527) social media usage habits. We hypothesised gender differences and social media addiction predictive effect on self-evaluations (self- esteem, (...)

This special issue on posthumanist perspectives on affect seeks to create a platform for thinking about the intersection of, on the one hand, the posthumanist project of radically reconfiguring the meaning of the “human” in light of the critiques of a unified and bounded subjectivity and, on the other, the insights coming from recent scholarship on affect and feeling about the subject, sociality, and connectivity. Posthumanism stands for diverse theoretical positions which together call into question the anthropocentric assertion of the (...)

Artykuł koncentruje się na trzech aspektach doświadczenia miłosnego pragnienia. Chcę pokazać, że po pierwsze średniowieczni autorzy mistyczni – Ryszard od św. Wiktora, Beatrycze z Nazaretu i inni – w analizie ludzkiej drogi do Boga przenieśli punkt ciężkości z zaspokojenia pragnienia Boga na sam akt pragnienia (Boga, tj. przedmiotu miłości). Z (...)

    The Dialectic of Formalization.Magdalena Germek - 2021 - Filozofski Vestnik 42 (1).
This article discusses the philosophy of Alain Badiou from the perspective of a formulation that we believe represents it succinctly: the dialectic of formalization. The main thesis of the article is that Badiou’s doctrine of the four truth procedures can be understood as a doctrine of a dialectical realization of new and universal forms in the world. The dialectic of formalization announces a double procedure – an autonomous and creative procedure for the production of a new true form in the (...)

Authority in Crisis? The Dynamic of the Relationship Between Prospero and Miranda in Appropriations of The Tempest.Magdalena Cieślak - 2017 - Text Matters - a Journal of Literature, Theory and Culture 7 (7):161-182.
The relationship between Prospero and Miranda is fairly typical for Shakespeare’s way of portraying parental authority and filial obligation. A strong and authoritative father, an absent mother and a rebellious daughter are character types reused in many of his plays. In The Tempest, authority, power and ownership, be it political or domestic, are important themes. In criticism, Prospero is frequently discussed through the prism of his attitude to his “subordinates”—Ariel, Caliban and Miranda—and the play’s narrative is interpreted in the context (...)
