“Of sea urchins, volcanoes, earthquakes … and engagement”: Marcello Carapezza, Alberto Monroy, and Italy's University System.Mario Pagliaro - 2007 - Science in Context 20 (4):679-691.
ArgumentIn Italy, only 2 per cent of the population consider scientists and experts to be society's leading personalities. Scientists are classified among the “weak social groups” and more precisely as those who have little influence either because they lack representation in the media, or because they lack resources. This article contributes to the current debate on science policies in Europe and addresses the question of why science has such a low reputation in Italy. How did this situation emerge and what (...)

Chapter 11 When and How To Import Technology: Issues in Technology Transfer.Mario Kamenetzky - 1984 - Bulletin of Science, Technology and Society 4 (2):208-217.
One issue underlying all others when technology transfer occurs is the need to build capacity. This capacity is needed in order to know what to buy, when to buy, from whom to buy, and how to buy. These decisions should always be taken by those working within a country's economy, particularly the decision on what to buy, which is value laden.

The Fluid Ubiquity of Food: Why Human Beings are Space–Time Cannibals.Mario Ricca - forthcoming - International Journal for the Semiotics of Law - Revue Internationale de Sémiotique Juridique:1-83.
This essay focuses on the impossibility of considering food as ‘a thing.’ It addresses the legal profiles of food from an interdisciplinary perspective by treating the production, signification and consumption of food as semio-spatial categories. The argument starts from the foundational premise that the dynamics of food, as a magmatic flow, comprehensively connect and transform all human activities and ecological aspects of life. Like a stream of radial projections in a mass of fluid, food functions as a semiotic membrane, embodying (...)

Viver, a que se destina?Mario Sergio Cortella - 2020 - [Campinas, SP]: Papirus 7 Mares. Edited by Leandro Karnal.

Critical Approaches to Science & Philosophy with a New Introduction.Mario Bunge - 1999 - Routledge.
This collection of essays, written on four continents by scientists, philosophers and humanists, was initially presented to Karl R. Popper on his sixtieth birthday as a token of critical admiration and in recognition of his work. But the volume also stands on its own as a remarkable series of statements utilizing Popper's critical vision in the study of philosophy proper, logic, mathematics, science as method and theory, and finally to the study of society and history. What is remarkable is that (...)

  36. The Expanded Epoché.Mario Perniola - 2011 - Iris 3 (6):157-170.
The following essay argues that the Husserlian idea of the epoché could be expanded to cover all aspects of practical life. The first part summarizes the extensive debate developed on this issue in English speaking Phenomenology in the 1970s, one that focused on the relation between the notions of epoché and reduction. In fact, the notion of reduction seems to run counter to the idea of expanding the epoché, insofar as it confines the latter within the narrow horizon of a (...)

Difficulty matters: Unspecific attentional demands as a major determinant of performance highlighted by clinical studies.Mario Bonato, Marco Zorzi & Carlo Umiltà - 2013 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 36 (6):680-681.
The cognitive impairments shown by brain-damaged patients emphasize the role of task difficulty as a major determinant for performance. We discuss the proposal of Kurzban et al. in light of our findings on right-hemisphere–damaged patients, who show increasing awareness deficits for the contralesional hemispace when engaged with resource-consuming dual tasks. This phenomenon is readily explained by the assumption of unspecific depletable resources.
