The Wisdom of the People and the Elite.Max J. E. Morris - 2023 - Theoria: A Journal of Social and Political Theory 70 (174):33-52.
John McCormick's ‘democratic’ interpretation of Machiavelli depends on the view that Machiavelli unequivocally endorses the people's moral and political wisdom over that of princes and the elite alike. Leo Strauss's interpretation of Machiavelli offers a means for appraising the anthropological basis of this reading, which is yet to appear in the scholarship. Strauss argues that Machiavelli reduces human nature to the mere desire to stay alive. The people will therefore choose whatever political option stands to offer them the best chance (...)

    Reflections on Rocky.Morris B. Holbrook - 1996 - Society and Animals 4 (2):147-168.
This paper applies an approach that the author calls Subjective Personal Introspection to the self-reflective examination, inward-looking understanding, and impressionistic evocation of his own consumption experiences as the keeper of a kitten named Rocky Raccoon. Three-dimensional photographs in the form of stereo pairs provide corroborative evidence for the interpretations suggested. In this reflexive, anecdotal, narrative account, Rocky the Cat emerges as a focal point in the author's experiential consumption.

Semantic Grounding of Novel Spoken Words in the Primary Visual Cortex.Max Garagnani, Evgeniya Kirilina & Friedemann Pulvermüller - 2021 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 15.
Embodied theories of grounded semantics postulate that, when word meaning is first acquired, a link is established between symbol and corresponding semantic information present in modality-specific—including primary—sensorimotor cortices of the brain. Direct experimental evidence documenting the emergence of such a link, however, is still missing. Here, we present new neuroimaging results that provide such evidence. We taught participants aspects of the referential meaning of previously unknown, senseless novel spoken words by associating them with either a familiar action or a familiar (...)

Preconceptions and prerequisites: Understanding the function of synaptic plasticity will also depend on a better systems-level understanding of the multiple types of memory.Richard G. M. Morris - 1997 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 20 (4):624-625.
Although it is not their fault, Shors & Matzel's attempt to review the LTP and learning hypothesis suffers from there being no clear published statement of the idea. Their summary of relevant evidence is not without error, however, and it oversimplifies fundamental issues relating to NMDA receptor function. Their attentional hypothesis is intriguing but requires a better systems-level understanding of how attention contributes to cognitive function.

Making ends meet on disability benefits.Zachary A. Morris - 2021 - Alter- European Journal of Disability Research 15-1 (15-1):15-28.

Ethics and the Introductory Finance Course.Morris G. Danielson & Amy F. Lipton - 2010 - Journal of Business Ethics Education 7:85-102.
This paper discusses how the teaching of ethics can be interwoven with the most basic concept in finance: time value of money. Although valuation formulas yield precise numerical answers, they require many assumptions about future economic conditions. If decision makers use false information or erroneous assumptions, they will arrive at an incorrect value estimate, even if the calculations are performed correctly. Thus, the valuation process can be manipulated byunscrupulous participants. This concept is illustrated with references to recent events. Examples appropriate (...)

    Excess Profits? A Cautionary Classroom Exercise.Morris G. Danielson & Amy F. Lipton - 2011 - Journal of Business Ethics Education 8 (1):157-166.
This paper presents a short classroom exercise to stimulate student discussion about the rights of shareholders versus the rights of stakeholders. Students are challenged to identify and evaluate their preconceived notions of what constitutes excessive profits. The exercise illustrates why the realization of a large return on investment cannot be used as prima facie evidence that a firm exploited employees, customers, or other stakeholders. This concept is illustrated using datafrom the pharmaceutical industry.

  28. Inference and explanation in cognitive neuropsychology.Max Coltheart & Martin Davies - 2003 - Cortex 39 (1):188-191.
The question posed by Dunn and Kirsner (D&K) is an instance of a more general one: What can we infer from data? One answer, if we are talking about logically valid deductive inference, is that we cannot infer theories from data. A theory is supposed to explain the data and so cannot be a mere summary of the data to be explained. The truth of an explanatory theory goes beyond the data and so is never logically guaranteed by the data. (...)

From “Block-Things” to “Time-Things”: Merleau-Ponty’s temporal ontology in part two of the phenomenology of perception.David Morris - 2019 - Continental Philosophy Review 53 (1):1-19.
Scholars such as Renaud Barbara and Bernhard Waldenfels and Regula Giuliani have emphasized time’s central role in Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy, and Michael Kelly has shown how the Phenomenology’s “Temporality” chapter already broaches his later ontological concerns. I deepen our understanding of this temporal–ontological nexus by showing how Merleau-Ponty’s temporal ontology in fact erupts even earlier in the Phenomenology, as an underlying theme that unifies part two, on “The Perceived World,” as leading into the “Temporality” chapter. I do this via a close (...)

Eine Relektüre der Romantik Zwischen Ethik Und Didaktik: Postmoderne Relektüre Mit Didaktischem Bezug.Max Brinnich - 2021 - Berlin: Springer Berlin Heidelberg.
