Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) has a wide influence on the exchange rate, education, health, training, and educational programs. In this paper we describe an intelligent tutoring system that helps student study computer networks. The current ITS provides intelligent presentation of educational content appropriate for students, such as the degree of knowledge, the desired level of detail, assessment, student level, and familiarity with the subject. Our Intelligent tutoring system was developed using ITSB authoring tool for building ITS. A preliminary evaluation of (...) the ITS was done by a group of students and teachers. In this paper, which brings together aging research and media research, we will contribute to the mapping of the complicated cartography of anti-aging by analyzing the press coverage of anti-aging medicine. The mass media decisively shape societal impacts of the expert scientific discourse on anti-aging. While sensitivity towards the heterogeneity of the field of anti-aging is increasing to some degree in the social-gerontological discussion, the role of the media in transmitting the various anti-aging messages to the general public has so (...) far not been systematically scrutinized. Current opinions on the press coverage of anti-aging medicine range from proponents’ complaints of a media witch-hunt against them to opponents’ reproaches about uncritical reporting of this complex topic. This paper discusses whether the media act accordingly to the ideal of the fourth estate, controlling the increased power of science in the 20th century. Our areas of investigation are two Western countries: the USA and Germany. Both countries have experienced an apparent increase in the average age of their populations, which has led to increasingly vigorous public debate since the late 20th century. The subjects of our study are three organizations that represent different approaches to anti-aging medicine: the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, the German Society of Anti-Aging Medicine, and the Methuselah Foundation. The article discusses the programs, goals, and media strategies of these organizations and compares them with the anti-aging messages that actually make their way to the reader in the media “interdiscourse.” The article asks whether transatlantic learning processes within the anti-aging medicine movement as well as in the media can be identified. The paper’s methods and sources are those of contemporary history and ethnography. The three approaches to anti-aging medicine are drawn from publications of spokespersons from the three presented anti-aging medicine organizations and from participant observation of anti-aging medicine conferences in Germany and Europe during the period from 2005 to 2008. The media analysis is based on the study of about 300 articles that appeared between 1990 and 2009 in US and German dailies and weeklies such as Newsweek, The New York Times, Der Spiegel, and Die Welt. Our analysis shows that, against the backdrop of pessimistic demographic apprehensions, the leitmotiv of both nations’ medical journalism between 1990 and 2009 was overwhelmingly pro anti-aging medicine. It is criticized that medical journalism on anti-aging medicine refrains from own investigations on potential risks. Scrutinizing activities of the media in terms of a fourth estate require stimulation from science itself. Hence, we argue for sensitization of medical journalism regarding ageism. (shrink)

In this paper, we designed and developed an intelligent tutoring system for teaching Photoshop. We designed the lessons, examples, and questions in a way to teach and evaluate student understanding of the material. Through the feedback provided by this tool, you can assess the student's understanding of the material, where there is a minimum overshoot questions stages, and if the student does not pass the level of questions he is asked to return the lesson and read it again. Eventually this (...) administration is a special teacher for the students and can continue with him until he fully understands the lesson without weariness or boredom, regardless of the level of student. Advancements in biological ageing research have shown that age-related diseases may be fought more effectively in the future by directly intervening into the ageing process. This prospect is associated with hopes for solving problems of demographic change. It also addresses raising awareness for complex ethical, legal and social issues that have hardly been a topic of discussion to date. Therefore, as the objective of our project, an interdisciplinary discourse module entitled “Ethics of Biogerontology” was developed to initiate a social debate (...) on the ethical, legal, and societal implications of biogerontology. The discourse module focuses on competences and argumentation skills and was developed with experts from relevant disciplines, e.g. biogerontology, social gerontology, philosophy, geriatrics, and medical ethics. Concepts of age and ageing are tightly interlinked with biogerontology and are as such relevant as teaching contents of the discourse module. The course module was tested in eight discourse teaching projects in research, medicine, and education in various partner institutions and evaluated based on an ethical competence model. This article describes the conception, including the learning objectives, of such a teaching course and the associated teaching contents. It also gives a justification for their selection. In the first section I briefly consider some stituations in which standard desert-claims would be disputed, with the aim of revealing why and by whom they are asserted or denied. Having attained some understanding of the point of different desert-statements, I propose an accound of their content that entails the thesis that statements of positive desert (deserving something desirable) sharply differ in meaning from statements of negative desert (deserving something undesirable), even when expressed in the same form. In the second (...) section I use this ambiguity thesis to argue against an appealing way of defending Hegel's claim that a wrongdoer has a right to be punished and against Kant's defense of the view that there is a duty to punish those who deserve it. I also show how an understanding of negative desert that recognizes the ambiguity thesis enables us to defend the ordinary view of mercy against Kantian criticisms and to reject the popular misconception that mercy is necessarily at odds with justice. In the third section I use the ambiguity thesis to rebut the common claim (found in Mill and Aristotle, among others) that it is unjust for a person to have or be given mone benefits than she deserves. I conclude by showing how an understanding of positive desert that recognizes the ambiguity thesis leads to a rejection both of certain complaints against traditional systems of private property and also of certain moralistic scruples that might give pause to those who acknowledge the moral duty to assist the needy. Este artículo examina el concepto filosófico de epistrophé en un contexto causal-metafísico. La epistrophé forma el último elemento de la famosa tríada neoplatónica: moné, próodos y epistrophé (permanencia, procesión y retorno). El objetivo central de este trabajo es examinar comparativamente el concepto de epistrophé en Proclo, su sucesor pagano Damascio, y Dionisio Pseudo-Areopagita, el más influyente receptor cristiano de Proclo. Ambos pensadores operan en distintos grados de dependencia respecto de la filosofía de Proclo, que constituye su fundamento, mientras que al (...) mismo tiempo desarrollan su propia autonomía. El análisis comparativo del concepto de epistrophé será también útil para resaltar las peculiaridades de estos tres pensadores y para mostrar las complejas relaciones entre ellos. Este artículo comenzará con una presentación del concepto procleano de epistrophé, particularmente a partir de los Elementos de teología. Luego se discutirán los capítulos 75-77 de las Problemas y soluciones acerca de los primeros principios de Damascio. Allí Damascio aborda algunos de los problemas y dificultades que conciernen al concepto neoplatónico de epistrophé y que surgen de las formulaciones de Proclo. A través de su planteamiento del problema aclara y profundiza el concepto de epistrophé acuñado por Proclo, siendo su concepción fundamental esencialmente correspondiente a la procleana. Por su parte, Dionisio reinterpreta el concepto de epistrophé. Para ilustrar esta transformación dionisiana, en el siguiente estudio se explicarán en detalle tres pasajes clave de la obra Sobre los nombres divinos, incluidos otros pasajes relevantes tanto del neoplatonismo tardío como de la patrística. Esto deberá mostrar que Dionisio reinterpreta el concepto de epistrophé desde una perspectiva ontológica hacia una cristiana-soteriológica. De esta manera trasciende la estructura causal triádica neoplatónica y desarrolla más exactamente una tétrada en la que utiliza epistrophé como apokatástasis y la vincula a la resurrección de los muertos. Con ello se iluminará, asimismo, la diferencia fundamental entre los conceptos de epistrophé y apokatástasis en la filosofía de Proclo. (shrink)

Der vorliegende Artikel untersucht den philosophischen Begriff der _epistrophé_ im ursächlich-metaphysischen Kontext. Die _epistrophé_ bildet das letzte Element der berühmten neuplatonischen Trias von _moné_, _próodos _und _epistrophé _(Verharren, Hervorgang und Rückwendung). Das zentrale Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, den Begriff der _epistrophé_ bei Proklos, seinem paganen Nachfolger Damaskios und Dionysios Pseudo-Areopagita, dem wirkungsmächtigsten christlichen Rezipienten von Proklos, vergleichend zu untersuchen. Beide Denker bewegen sich in unterschiedlicher Abhängigkeit von der Philosophie des Proklos, die ihre Grundlage darstellt, und entwickeln gleichzeitig ihre eigene (...) Autonomie. Die vergleichende Analyse des Begriffs der _epistrophé_ dient auch dazu, die Eigenheiten dieser drei Denker herauszuarbeiten und die komplexen Beziehungen zwischen ihnen aufzuzeigen. Der Artikel beginnt mit einer Darstellung des Proklischen Begriffs der _epistrophé_, wobei besonders auf seine _Theologische Grundlegung_ Bezug genommen wird. Anschließend wird auf die Kapitel 75-77 von Damaskios’ _Aporien und Lösungen bezüglich der ersten Prinzipien_ eingegangen. Damaskios thematisiert hier einige Probleme und Schwierigkeiten, die den neuplatonischen Begriff der _epistrophé_ betreffen und sich aus Proklos’ Formulierungen ergeben. Durch seine Problemstellungen klärt und vertieft er den von Proklos geprägten Begriff der _epistrophé_, wobei seine Grundanschauung im Wesentlichen mit der des Proklos übereinstimmt. Im Gegensatz dazu erfolgt bei Dionysios eine Neuinterpretation des Begriffs der _epistrophé_. Um Dionysios’ Transformation des Begriffs zu verdeutlichen, werden drei Schlüsselstellen aus dem Werk _Über göttliche Namen_ ausführlich analysiert. Dabei werden auch relevante Passagen aus dem späten Neuplatonismus und der Patristik herangezogen. Hierdurch wird gezeigt, dass Dionysios den Begriff der _epistrophé_ vom Ontologischen ins Christlich-Soteriologische umdeutet. Auf diese Weise überschreitet er die neuplatonische triadische Kausalstruktur und entwickelt eher eine Tetrade, in der die _epistrophé_ bereits als _apokatástasis_ verwendet und mit der Totenauferstehung verbunden wird. In diesem Zusammenhang wird auch der fundamentale Unterschied zwischen den Begriffen der _epistrophé_ und der _apokatástasis_ in Proklos’ Philosophie beleuchtet. (shrink)

The article deals with semiosis and its dimensions as a theoretical construct to show some elementary differences between spheres of semiotic activity. In essence, one sign will be dissected into four categories of existence to show it may have different relations depending on the dimension it happens to be in. The general framework is that of human consciousness and its two distinct states: awake cognition and asleep dreaming with emphasis on the latter. From our point of view, the concepts of (...) ‘nature’ and ‘culture’ have two layers: the manifest form and the latent function, the seen and the unseen. These are used as parallels to support the central thesis of this article that human cognition has dreaming as its countepart.The main theoretical frame is drawn from the work of Greimas and Courtes with emphasis on the semiotic square. The concept of the sign is taken from Peirce, whereas ‘sign-ness’ is adopted from Pyatigorskij. By projecting the triadic sign onto the semiotic square and excluding the concept ‘sign system’ along with the syntactic aspect, the basic fourfold dimension of the sign as such will be brought to view based on the distinct sign-relations in each given dimension. In order to double the square, semiosis will be endowed with features of ‘being-able’, thus affording the initial expression of dominant modalities serving as basis for the structure(s) of the elementary function and mechanism in each of the four dimensions. This will also enable bringing into view some elementary restrictions on semiosis in each dimension. Lastly, some new terms are suggested in accordance with what has been presented.В статье рассматривается семиозис и его измерения как теоретическая конструкция, чтобы показать некоторые элементарные различия между сферами семиотического действия. По сути знак будет разделен на четыре категории существования, чтобы показать, что он может иметь разные отношения в зависимости от того, в каком измерении он находится. Основной рамкой, вместе с тем, является человеческое сознание в его двух состояниях: в состоянии бодрствования и сна со сновидениями, с акцентом на последнее. Несмотря на широкое использование универсальных понятий ‘природа’ и ‘культура’, статья не сосредоточивается на семиотических особенностях этих доменов. С нашей точки зрения ‘природа’ и ‘культура’ имеют два уровня, т.е. проявленную форму и скрытую функцию, видимое и невидимое. Они используются параллельно, поддерживая центральный тезис этой статьи о том, что человеческое познание имеет соответствие в виде сновидения.Теоретическая рамка взята из работы Греймаса и Курте с акцентом на семиотический квадрат. Понятие знака трактуется в духе Пирса, тогда как понятие ≪знаковости≫ дается по Пятигорскому. При проекции триадического знака на семиотический квадрат и исключении понятия ≪знаковой системы≫ вместе с синтаксическим аспектом, обнаруживается основное четырехкратное измерение знака, опирающаяся на определенные знаковые отношения в каждом данном измерении. Чтобы удвоить квадрат, семиозис будет наделен функцией ≪быть способным≫, таким образом обеспечивая начальное выражение доминирующих модальностей, служащих в каждом из четырых измерений основой для структуры (структур) элементарной функции и механизма. Это также даст возможность рассмотреть некоторые элементарные ограничения семиозиса в каждом из измерений. Sisuliselt lahatakse uks mark neljaks eksistentsikategooriaks, naitamaks, et sel voivad olla erinevad suhted olenevalt mootmest, milles see olema juhtub. Uldiseks raamiks on inimteadvus ja selle kaks eristuvat olekut: arkvelolek ja uni, rohuasetusega viimasel. Vaatamata universaalsete terminite nagu ‘loodus’ ja ‘kultuur’ ohtrale kasutamisele, ei tegele kaesolev artikkel nende valdkondade semiootiliste eriparadega. Meie seisukohast on ‘loodusel’ ja ‘kultuuril’ kaks kihti – manifestne vorm ja latentne funktsioon, nahtav ja nahtamatu. Neid vaadeldakse paralleelselt, et toetada kaesoleva artikli keskset teesi, et inimkognitsiooni vasteks on unenagemine.Peamine teoreetiline raam tuleneb Greimase ja Courtes’ toodest, rohuasetusega semiootilisele ruudule. Artikkel uurib muutusi ja arenguid Jean-Paul Sartre’i subjektikäsituses, mis leidsid aset tema fenomenoloogilise ja eksistentsialistliku mõtlemise perioodidel, keskendudes valdavalt tema filosoofilistele töödele, rõhuasetusega subjekti üldist struktuuri puutuval problemaatikal. Suurimat tähelepanu pälvivad vabadusega seonduvad transformatsioonid, sest selles vallas on Sartre’i seisukohtade erinevused kõige märgatavamad ja ühtlasi kõige olulisemad, kuid jõudumööda pööratakse pilk ka nüansseeritumatele teisendustele. Artikkel tutvustab põgusalt nimetatud muutuste ja nende taga seisvate arengute sisu, püüab Sartre’i mõtlemise perioode klassifitseerida, loob võrdlusi varasemate ja hilisemate teoste vahel ning polemiseerib autoritega, kes (...) modifikatsioonide tähtsust kas alahindavad või sootuks tähelepanuta jätavad. Kokkuvõttes jõutakse tõdemuseni, et paljudel hilisema Sartre’i poolt kasutatavatel mõistetel on varasemaga võrreldes üsna teistsugune tähendus ning need tähendusnihked annavad tunnistust sellest, et Sartre’i subjekti-filosoofias leidsid aset mõned üsna kardinaalsed, eriti just vabadust ja subjekti läbipaistvust puudutavad pöörded. The author concentrates on the period of approximately 1960–1990, when he himself was engaged in the field, i.e. the time before 1960 is not included. The aim of this paper is not to provide an overview of the individual philosophers in Estonia (...) at the time and their works, but to give a more general description of the philosophy of the Soviet era. The Soviet and the East European philosophy of the time have received rather little critical treatment in literature in English. However, a few general overviews trying to prove that this Soviet and East European philosophical legacy is worth studying have still been published. This paper is focused on the question what kind of philosophical researches it was possible to engage oneself in under the abnormal conditions at the time and whether some starting points and problem issues in theseresearches might be viable also today. Estonian experience confirms the general conclusion of these authors who, analyzing the legacy of Marxism, have found that although Marxism is nowadays—not to mention how it existed in the Soviet totalitarian regime—mainly not considered a serious philosophy but rather an ideological basis of a failed political doctrine, it has nevertheless quite something to offer when treated in a more depoliticized manner, in the general context of philosophical quests. Autor peatub ajavahemikul umbes 1960–1990, mil ta ka ise tegev oli, st 1960-ndate aastate eelset aega ei käsitleta. Artikli eesmärgiks ei ole ülevaate andmine Eestis sel ajal tegutsenud filosoofidest ja nende töödest, vaid Nõukogudeaegse filosoofia üldisem iseloomustamine. Nõukogude ja selleagset Ida-Euroopa filosoofiat on ingliskeelses kirjanduses üsna vähe kriitiliselt uuritud. Üksikuid ülevaateteoseid, milles on püütud näidata, etsee Nõukogude ja Ida-Euroopa filosoofiline pärand väärib uurimist, on siiski ilmunud. Käesolevas artiklis on keskendutud eelkõige küsimusele, mis laadi filosoofilise uurimistööga sai tolle aja ebanormaalsetes tingimustes tegelda ja kas mõned lähtekohad ja probleemipüstitused selles on elujõulised ka veel nüüd. Eesti kogemus kinnitab nende autorite üldist järeldust, kes marksismi pärandit uurides on leidnud, et kuigi marksismi tänapäeval — rääkimata sellest, missugune see oli Nõukogude totalitaarses režiimis — enamasti ei peeta tõsiseltvõetavaks filosoofiaks, vaid pigem läbikukkunud poliitilise õpetuse ideoloogiliseks aluseks, on tal siiski nii mõndagi öelda, kui teda käsitleda depolitiseeritumalt, filosoofiliste otsingute üldises kontekstis. Cet article a comme objetif analyser les liens possibles entre deux thèmes de grande relevance de la philosophie de Nicolas de Cues : la théophanie comme manifestation de Dieu et la filiatione dei ou visio Dei, comme modes de clairvoyance de l'infini divin. Cette « voie divine » de la connaissance est la fin d'un voyage où la créature « court » vers le fondement radical qui se révèle em tant que présence infinie dans le fini grâce une « vision (...) » intellectuelle. Le principe de la non-contradiction doit donc être remplacé par celui de la coïncidence des contraires ; cependant, ce dernier doit finalement être dépassé par l'ignorance savante. A son tour, selon Nicolas de Cues, dans cette vision théophanique, le « ne pas savoir » de la créature coincide avec le « savoir » que Dieu a de lui-même, c'est-à-dire de sa connaissance de soi comme infini et non pas en tant qu’une chose parmi d’autres. Dans la tradition néoplatonicienne latine, l’univers théorique où gravitent les concepts de monè, proódos et epistrophé (manence, procession et retour), Nicolas de Cues apporte cependant des nouveautés par rapport à ses prédécesseurs, comme Jean Scot Erigène, puisqu'il se lance dans une tentative ambitieuse d’utiliser la négativité comme outil d'un « discours ignorant » radical, c'est-à-dire un discours qui cherche une expression positive de la « racine » de cette relation paradoxale Créateur-créature. A travers l'itinéraire d'élaboration des noms divins et des énigmes de plus en plus « capables » d'orienter l'intellect vers cette vision du principe incompréhensible dans sa relation active de création/vision avec l'Univers, le Cardinal parcourt le chemin philosophique proposé dans son De coniecturis : une recherche sans fin de l'expression positive de Dieu à travers la négativité visant dépasser l’anonymat classique qui caractérise la tradition néoplatonicienne. Dabei werden auch relevante Passagen aus dem späten Neuplatonismus und der Patristik herangezogen. Hierdurch wird gezeigt, dass Dionysios den Begriff der epistrophé vom Ontologischen ins Christlich-Soteriologische umdeutet. Auf diese Weise überschreitet er die neuplatonische triadische Kausalstruktur und entwickelt eher eine Tetrade, in der die epistrophé bereits als apokatástasis verwendet und mit der Totenauferstehung verbunden wird. In diesem Zusammenhang wird auch der fundamentale Unterschied zwischen den Begriffen der epistrophé und der apokatástasis in Proklos’ Philosophie beleuchtet. (shrink)

Este artículo examina el concepto filosófico de _epistrophé_ en un contexto causal-metafísico. La _epistrophé_ forma el último elemento de la famosa tríada neoplatónica: _moné_, _próodos_ y _epistrophé_ (permanencia, procesión y retorno). El objetivo central de este trabajo es examinar comparativamente el concepto de _epistrophé_ en Proclo, su sucesor pagano Damascio, y Dionisio Pseudo-Areopagita, el más influyente receptor cristiano de Proclo. Ambos pensadores operan en distintos grados de dependencia respecto de la filosofía de Proclo, que constituye su fundamento, mientras que al (...) mismo tiempo desarrollan su propia autonomía. El análisis comparativo del concepto de _epistrophé_ será también útil para resaltar las peculiaridades de estos tres pensadores y para mostrar las complejas relaciones entre ellos. Este artículo comenzará con una presentación del concepto procleano de _epistrophé_, particularmente a partir de los _Elementos de teología_. Luego se discutirán los capítulos 75-77 de las _Problemas y soluciones acerca de los primeros principios_ de Damascio. Allí Damascio aborda algunos de los problemas y dificultades que conciernen al concepto neoplatónico de _epistrophé_ y que surgen de las formulaciones de Proclo. A través de su planteamiento del problema aclara y profundiza el concepto de _epistrophé_ acuñado por Proclo, siendo su concepción fundamental esencialmente correspondiente a la procleana. Por su parte, Dionisio reinterpreta el concepto de _epistrophé_. Para ilustrar esta transformación dionisiana, en el siguiente estudio se explicarán en detalle tres pasajes clave de la obra _Sobre los nombres divinos_, incluidos otros pasajes relevantes tanto del neoplatonismo tardío como de la patrística. Esto deberá mostrar que Dionisio reinterpreta el concepto de _epistrophé_ desde una perspectiva ontológica hacia una cristiana-soteriológica. De esta manera trasciende la estructura causal triádica neoplatónica y desarrolla más exactamente una tétrada en la que utiliza _epistrophé_ como _apokatástasis_ y la vincula a la resurrección de los muertos. Con ello se iluminará, asimismo, la diferencia fundamental entre los conceptos de _epistrophé_ y _apokatástasis_ en la filosofía de Proclo. (shrink)

Emphasis is placed on the tripod emblematic of this sacred office which is here intimately associated with expertise in the oracular communications of the Cumaean Sibyl. The libri Sibyllini, the supervision and interpretation (...) of which were amongst the earliest and most conspicuous of the XVuiri's responsibilities, could be traced to the Sibyl at Cumae. Wreathes, too, formed part of the XVuir's equipment, and of course during the Imperial period the Sibylline books were deposited in the Temple of Apollo on the Palatine. In little more than two lines, then, one finds an abundance of references that cannot fail to fashion this addressee of Apollo as a quindecimvir. (shrink)

The author concentrates on the period of approximately 1960–1990, when he himself was engaged in the field, i.e. the time before 1960 is not included. The aim of this paper is not to provide an overview of the individual philosophers in Estonia at the time and their works, but to give a more general description of the philosophy of the Soviet era. The Soviet and the East European philosophy of the time have received rather little critical treatment in literature in English. However, a few general overviews trying to prove that this Soviet and East European philosophical legacy is worth studying have still been published. This paper is focused on the question what kind of philosophical researches it was possible to engage oneself in under the abnormal conditions at the time and whether some starting points and problem issues in these researches might be viable also today. Estonian experience confirms the general conclusion of these authors who, analyzing the legacy of Marxism, have found that although Marxism is nowadays—not to mention how it existed in the Soviet totalitarian regime—mainly not considered a serious philosophy but rather an ideological basis of a failed political doctrine, it has nevertheless quite something to offer when treated in a more depoliticized manner, in the general context of philosophical quests.
