고난과 시련의 역사가 만든 유대인 성공하고 싶다면 유태인의 방식으로 살아라 페이스북의 창시자 마크 저커버그, 세계 최고의 영화감독이자 제작자로 일컬어지는 스티븐 스필버그, 20세기 최고의 천재 물리학자 아인슈타인, 세계 인구 비율의 0.2%, 미국 억만장자의 40%, 역대 노벨상의 30%. 이들의 공통점은 바로 '유대인'이라는 것이다. 그 밖에도 퓰리처, 마이클 델, 하워드 슐츠, 마르크스, 앨빈 토플러, 노엄 촘스키, 프로이트, 샤갈, 캘빈 클라인, 폴 뉴먼, 더스틴 호프만 등 각 분야에서 최고로 불리며 시대와 역사를 이끌어온 유태인들은 무수히 많다. 유태인의 뛰어난 비즈니스 감각에 숨겨진 역사적 배경에서부터 전 세계 (...) 부를 지배한 금전관리 능력, 세계 최강의 인재들로 키워내는 자녀교육, 지혜의 보고 탈무드에서 배우는 성공철학에 이르기까지, 영원한 이방인에서 세상의 주인이 될 수밖에 없었던 유태인들의 흥미로운 이야기들을 바탕으로 유태인들에게서 우리가 배워야 할 78가지 지혜를 이야기하고 있다. 또한 유태인들이 5천 년 동안 간직한 삶의 지혜를 통해 지금 이 시대를 살아가는 우리가 가야 할 길을 명확하게 제시한다. 저자는 굳이 우리가 유태인의 신앙을 따르지 않더라도 유태인의 성공을 반면교사로 삼아 내 안의 나를 향해 최선을 다할 수밖에 없는 이유를 스스로 만들어봄으로써 인생을 새롭게 경영할 수 있는 기회를 마련할 수 있을 것이라고 이야기한다. 이 책을 통해 독자들은 유태인들의 독특한 생활방식을 배우는 것에 그치는 것이 아니라, 우리만의 새로운 방식을 찾을 수 있는 계기를 마련할 수 있을 것이다. Emerging systems using artificial intelligence (AI) including the complexities of deep learning leading to decision-making outcomes pose challenge, risk alongside opportunities to revolutionize business sectors and thus, human life. Building AI that impact on critical decision-making must be entwined with ethical questioning from the initial conception of design. As academics educating future technologists, we must lead on embedding the importance of ethical thinking for equitable designed systems. Currently, it is unclear across UK Higher Education how widely ethics is taught across (...) programmes of study within computer science disciplines, their importance within the curriculum plus the confidence of academics for its delivery. This paper carries out a survey analysis to identify gaps, measures of engagement, expertise and knowledgebase of topics through both quantitative and qualitative questioning. The survey was distributed to 15 member universities of the Council for Professors and Heads of Computing (CPHC) randomly selected across the UK for which 32 academics engaged in the study. Results show ethics was noted as being important although one-third reported it was not widely embedded across the curriculum. Just less than half of participants schedule the teaching of ethics regularly either across one or several modules. Interestingly, 91% of respondents stated that they have not received any instruction or training and that 62% felt that they require more training on the subject matter. This paper is inspired by wider research from European studies however, this study provides a specific novel focus on a broad range of UK universities, providing comparative analysis and unique findings from the UK perspective. The significance of these findings suggest academics perspectives vary with specific training needs. This demonstrates that this early-stage research requires further exploration of the wider computer science curriculum, sharing of good practice and collaborative working. (shrink)

This article shows how the ethical framing of the contemporary issue of modern slavery has evolved in UK construction, a sector in which there is a high risk of labor exploitation. It also examines how these framing dynamics have inhibited the emergence of a common framework of action to deal with the issue. We draw on both framing theory and the literature on the discursive construction of moral legitimacy. Our longitudinal analysis reveals that actors seeking to shape the debate bring (...) their own moral schemes to justify and construct the legitimacy of their frames. Actors cluster their views around five evolving frames: human rights issue (later shifting to hidden crime), moral issue, management issue (later shifting to human moral obligation), social justice issue, and decent work issue—which promote particular normative evaluations of what the issue is, who is responsible, and recommendations for action. Our study contributes to a dynamic and political understanding of the meaning making of modern slavery. We identify the antecedents and conditions that have forestalled the emergence of new patterns of action to tackle modern slavery in the UK construction sector thereby evidencing the effects of the interplay of morally competing frames on field-level change. This review essay looks at two important recent books on the empirical social science of inequality, Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett's The Spirit Level and John Hills et al .'s Towards a More Equal Society? , situating these books against the important work of Michael Marmot on epidemiology and health inequalities. I argue that political philosophy can gain a great deal from careful engagement with empirical research on the nature and consequences of inequality, especially in regard to empirical work on (...) the relationship between socioeconomic inequality, status, self-respect, domination, autonomy, the quality of social relations, and societal health outcomes. The essay also raises some methodological questions about the approach taken by Wilkinson and Pickett, as well as questioning the ways in which their argument is (or is not) best understood as being fundamentally egalitarian in character. It concludes with some reflections, prompted by Hills et al ., on the lessons that should be learned by egalitarians from the experience of the Blair and Brown governments in the UK. (shrink)

Aberrant consumer behaviour costs firms millions of pounds a year, and the Internet has provided young techno-literate consumers with a new medium to exploit businesses. This paper addresses Internet related ethics and describes the ways in which young consumers misdemean on the Internet and their attitudes towards these. Using a sample of 219 generation Y consumers, the study identified 24 aberrant behaviours which grouped into five factors; illegal, questionable activities, hacking related, human Internet trade and downloading. Those perceived as least (...) wrong were; "Downloading movie and music files from the Internet for free". The consequences of these behaviours have implications for educators, consumer policy and marketers. (shrink)

O’BRIEN T and ACKROYD S. Nursing Inquiry 2012; 19: 39–50 Understanding the recruitment and retention of overseas nurses: realist case study research in National Health Service Hospitals in the UKThis paper illustrates one of the possible applications of critical realist ideas to the analysis of health services, in the use of comparative case study research design, to elucidate the causal social processes underlying events. In the research reported here, a comparative research design was used as a basis for improving our (...) understanding of the processes involved in the assimilation of overseas nurses (OSN) into the salient long‐term workforce of the National Health Service (NHS) hospitals in the UK. The work brought to light the salient experiences of overseas nurses during their initial work in the NHS hospitals, and these were used as a basis for developing an account of the general mechanisms typically underlying the recruitment and assimilation at work. The authors conclude that successful assimilation is often hindered by the presence of occupational closure mechanisms, by which home nurses effectively excluded recruits from participation and promotion; these mechanisms, which articulate with everyday racism, threaten successful assimilation for obvious reasons. If the treatment recruits receive does not lead to withdrawal, it is because they typically have very strong economic motives to continue despite unfavourable and sometimes inhumane treatment. Thus, the research offered substantial reasons why recruitment policies should be reviewed by policy‐makers. (shrink)
