My concern in this paper is to examine certain thesis proposed by cognitivist theories about the relationship between emotion and belief. Due to the great variety of states we call emotions and to the fact that they do not constitute a unitary class, it is not only difficult but also unhelpful to formulate a general theory about their connection with belief. It is important to examine particular emotions and special cases to avoid undue simplification. When we go into particular cases (...) we observe that with certain emotions a perception of ‘seeing something as’ is more relevant to the emotion than a specific belief. Although in general we believe things are as we see them, there are cases when our rational beliefs conflict with our perceptions - i.e. seeing something as dangerous but not believing it is. ‘Seeing as’ does not have here the same direction of it as belief and cannot be considered a cognitive state. On the other hand, there are emotions like love and hate, which hardly ever take sentential complements and of which we cannot say that they are determined or generated by specific beliefs or by seeing their object in some specific way. En este artículo me ocupo de algunas características de las emociones y de sus relaciones con otras actitudes proposicionales que les permiten ocupar un lugar en el «espacio de las razones» y funcionar así como explicaciones de acciones intencionales. Examino las diferentes formas de usar los términos de emoción y las consecuencias que esto tiene para la explicación tanto de las emociones como de las acciones. Concluyo que el modelo de emociones de Davidson es demasiado restrictivo y opto por una (...) forma de inteligibilidad menos rígida, la de la «causación razonable», que nos permite entender un estado mental o una acción como un efecto razonable de un conjunto de estados proposicionales. Finalmente menciono cómo la atribución de rasgos de la personalidad y otras actitudes generales sirven para guiar nuestras explicaciones y delimitar el tipo de estados mentales que pueden intervenir en ellas. Tomando como punto de partida y de referencia la caracterización de los sentimientos y actitudes reactivos que Strawson hace en “Freedom and Resentment”, en este artículo me propongo examinar este tipo de emociones que, como respuesta a las actitudes, intenciones y acciones de otras personas, son emociones esencialmente sociales. En primer lugar, examinaré las condiciones en las que pueden darse los sentimientos y actitudes reactivas personales, y mencionaré algunos casos en los que pueden ser inapropiados. Posteriormente, haré un breve comentario (...) muy general acerca del papel que juegan las emociones de este tipo en la explicación de la conducta de un individuo. Para terminar, me referiré brevemente a los otros dos tipos de emociones reactivas que menciona Strawson: las autorreactivas y las morales o impersonales. (shrink)

En la presente reseña reflexionaré sobre algunos aspectos de la obra de José Luis Díaz: Análisis de la conducta. Díaz plantea el problema mente-cuerpo como una relación donde lo mental no se entiende como algo absolutamente independiente del cuerpo. Así, admite una relación causal entre fenómenos mentales y físicos, sin por ello negar las particularidades de cada ámbito. En la reseña plantearé dos comentarios críticos a la teoría de José Luis Díaz. El primer comentario concierne a la manera en que (...) Díaz propone analizar y clasificar las relaciones que hay entre las distintas entidades psico-físicas. En el segundo comentario cuestionaré la versión que Díaz da sobre lo mental. De acuerdo con Díaz: “el evento mental es la manera como el sistema experimenta, desde adentro, el proceso de ciertos fenómenos multisinapticos...”. Argumentaré que esta caracterización de lo mental es más adecuada para las sensaciones. Añadiré que hace falta una caracterización de las conductas mentales que permita diferenciar entre conductas intencionales y no intencionales. Como mostraré en la reseña, pienso que la manera en que Díaz caracteriza las conductas no logra este cometido. Finalmente, añadiré una aclaración sobre la atribución e interpretación de las actitudes proposicionales. (shrink)

En este artículo hago un análisis del Monismo Anómalo de Donald Davidson. En primer lugar, considero al monismo anómalo como una teoría novedosa de la identidad psicofísica. Esta versión de la teoría de la identidad intenta conciliar tres principios, a saber, 1) Principio de la interacción causal; 2) Principio del carácter nomológico de la causalidad; 3) Principio de la anomalía de lo mental. Si bien hay una contradicción entre 1) y 2) con 3), Davidson ofrece una interpretación adecuada de los (...) tres principios que elimina la contradicción y le permite defender su teoría de la identidad. En segundo lugar, supondré que para cada suceso mental particular podemos dar una descripción en términos puramente físicos. Lo que no podemos hacer es reducir lo mental a lo físico en base a una ley. Así, mostraré que las generalizaciones psicofísicas nunca podrán tener el status de leyes científicas porque lo mental no constituye un sistema cerrado. A continuación, me centraré en dos argumentos que encajan bien con la teoría de Davidson, y que prueban la no-existencia de leyes psicofísicas. El primero sostiene que ninguna ley puede incluir términos mentales. El segundo sostiene que no puede haber leyes psicofísicas. Posteriormente, trataré de dar razones para aceptar la primera premisa del segundo argumento, y para apoyar el Principio de la Anomalía de lo mental. Así, sostendré que no existen leyes psicofísicas porque lo mental y lo físico tienen propósitos dispares, porque hay entre ellos una diferencia categorial. (shrink)

El que existan o no leyes psicofísicas tiene consecuencias para el problema mente-cuerpo en general y en particular para las diversas teorías de identidad de lo mental y lo físico, sobre todo en relación con la posibilidad de reducción de la psicología a alguna ciencia física. En este artículo me propongo examinar uno de los argumentos en contra de la existencia de leyes psicofísicas que se basa en la teoría de las clases naturales propuesta por Putnam y Kripke. El esquema (...) general del argumento, propuesto por McGinn, es el siguiente: 1) Cualquier término que aparezca en una ley deberá ser un término de clase natural. 2) Los términos mentales no son términos de clases naturales. Por lo tanto, 3) Ninguna ley puede incluir términos mentales. Este argumento excluye la posibilidad de leyes que contengan términos mentales, esto es, va en contra tanto de leyes psicofísicas como de leyes puramente psicológicas. A lo largo del articulo argumentaré a favor de las premisas de este argumento, sobre todo a favor de la segunda. (shrink)

Las historia de los distintos modos de concebir la tolerancia ha sido determinada en gran parte por la historia paralela de las intolerancias religiosas.

Las sensaciones constituyen el mayor obstáculo para dar una explicación satisfactoria de la mente en términos no mentales, y se distinguen por la manera como se sienten, esto es, por sus qualia o su carácter fenoménico, que se resiste a ser explicado y que hace patente el hiato entre lo físico y lo mental. Pero, ¿en qué consiste este aspecto de las sensaciones? ¿Lograremos alguna vez dar cuenta de él adecuadamente? Both indignation, and sometimes shame, can be considered moral emotions because whoever feels them needs a sense of moral values and distinctions, and a grasp of what is correct and incorrect, just and unjust, honorable and dishonorable. However, there are differences in the moral aspects associated with each. Shame is related to self-respect and, sometimes, for this to be upheld, something moral is considered necessary. But shame, unlike indignation, is not moral in the sense of being other-regarding. The person who (...) becomes indignant acknowledges the violations of the rights of others and their suffering. The focus here will be on explicating shame and indignation as emotions that require concepts, beliefs and desires related to morality. (shrink)

Fear and Uncertainty discusses Robert Gordon's thesis according to which fear is an epistemic - as opposed to factive - emotion inasmuch as S's fearing p requires S's being uncertain whether p or ~p, and also requires that the uncertainty implicit in fearing be of a non-deliberative or 'external' kind. Hansberg argues against both parts of this thesis, which purports to offer part of the structure of the emotion of fear. First, she says, Gordon cannot account for those cases (...) of weakness of the will in which an agent fears that when the moment comes he himself will not act upon his own previous purpose. So an external uncertainty proves to be not so essential a requisite. Now, what about the uncertainty, whatever its form, condition? Hansberg finds several examples in which someone fears p even though he actually is certain that p (when one fears, for example, a medical treatment known to be painful, or when one fears one's own inminent death, say, by suicide). She also argues against Gordon's distinction between propositional fears and mere 'states of fear' with no semantic content, and disapproves of his inclusión of certain fears - like fear of a violent death, fear of injury to oneself, and many phobias - in the latter category. Those supposedly non-propositional states can, and often do, give rise to propositional states and intentional actions; so Gordon would have to explain how this is possible: some of those supposedly mere states of fear need a place in an explanation- by-reasons scheme. Finally, Hansberg claims that all fears do have a propositional structure, even though some fears have it in a concealed way. So, for example, if someone is afraid of death, he is afraid that he will die young, or that he will go to hell, and so on. The papers in this collection discuss the central questions about the connections between language, reality and human understanding. The complex relations between accounts of meaning and facts about ordinary speakers’ understanding of their language are examined so as to illuminate the philosophical character of the connections between language and reality. The collection as a whole is a thematically unified treatment of some of the most central questions within contemporary philosophy of language.

How much of our ordinary moral thought can we make sense of using a model of practical reason in which value is seen as subjective? There are already problems with showing strength of will not to be irrational. If social obligations are conceived of instrumentally as in a tradition running from Hobbes through Hume to Mackie, and if we employ our strength of will to sacrifice our individual projects in favor of them, the problems become insuperable.

In an attempt to control the 'ballooning' of (discourse about) human rights James Griffin proposes a theory of them grounded in their presumed aim of protecting what he calls 'normative agency'. This paper criticizes the resulting theory's restriction of those thereby deemed to possess human rights only to functioning human agents, and does so in part through special attention to cases of human beings trapped in non-functioning bodies. The need for a less stringent account of the conditions necessary for possession (...) of human rights is suggested, and is defended against the claim that adoption of such an account would continue to favour debasement of the language of human rights. Recent developments in the health care industry have precipitated a new wave of interest in expanding the scope of practice for nursing. This is because the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, broadly designed to increase access to health insurance, will inevitably result in increased demand for primary care providers. And with compensation for primary care physicians already lagging far behind that of specialists, the role of nurse practitioners is once again receiving increased attention as a viable means by which (...) to ease the pressure for access to health care.But the economics of this trade-off are controversial. On one hand, it sets primary care physicians at odds with specialists; namely, if the ultimate goal is to “bend the cost curve downward,” should specialist compensation be reduced in order to increase spending on primary care?
