보조 지눌(普照知訥, 1158∼1210)은 한국의 선(禪)을 대표하는 선승이다. 이 글에서는 조선 불교에 미친 보조의 유풍(遺風)을 ‘진화와 확산’의 관점에서 접근해 보았다. 먼저 조선시대 송광사(松廣寺)의 역사와 전통 인식에 나타난 보조 계승의식을 검토했는데, 조선 초의 수선사(修禪社) 작법 회복 주장, 송광사 중창과 16국사 현창, 지눌 저술의 간행과 부휴계(浮休系)의 보조 유풍 선양 등을 다루었다. 이어 조선 전기 고승들의 선의 기풍과 그 안에 보이는 보조 사상의 단편을 추적해 보았다. 선과 교에 모두 정통했던 함허 기화(涵虛己和, 1376∼1433)는 ‘돈오점수(頓悟漸修)’를 중시했다는 점에서, 대혜 종고(大慧宗杲)와 고봉 원묘(高峰原妙)의 간화선(看話禪)을 계승하려 한 벽송 지엄(碧松智嚴, (...) 1464∼1534)은 ‘교학을 입문으로 한 간화선의 실천’이라는 점에서 보조 사상과 공통점을 가진다. 다음으로 청허 휴정(淸虛休靜, 1520∼1604)의 ‘간화선 우위의 선교겸수’ 방식과 조선 후기 승려 교육과정을 사상적 측면에서 보조 유풍의 지속으로 보았다. 반면 정통주의에 입각한 임제종 태고법통(太古法統)이 등장하면서 지눌의 역사상의 권위가 더는 인정되지 않는 등 보조 유풍은 양면성을 가지고 있었다. 이는 선(간화선)과 교(화엄)를 함께 전승해야 하면서도 조선 불교의 정체성을 선종의 임제종에서 찾으려 한 당대적 맥락에서 배태된 결과였다. 그럼에도 선교 겸수와 간화선의 두 축은 보조 유풍이 조선 불교를 관통하여 지속되었음을 분명히 보여준다. 이는 시기별 변화와 시대의 과제에 부응하여 보조 사상이 역사적 원천에만 머물지 않고 진화와 확산을 거듭해왔음을 의미한다. Zen philosophy of language is discussed by exploring the concepts of live and dead words, involvement with meaning and involvement with words, and the three mysterious gates as they are employed in Pojo Chinul's huatou meditation. A comparison is made between the Zen use of language and Merleau-Ponty's philosophy of visibility, Julia Kristeva's idea of the semiotic and the symbolic, and Kierkegaard's concept of anxiety, in an attempt to provide a paradigm to understand the Zen Buddhist vision.

abstract: This essay explores the parallels in the life and teaching of the Korean Zen master Pojo Chinul (1158–1210) and the Franciscan saint and theologian Bonaventure of Bagnoregio (ca. 1217–1274). Living during the same thirteenth century but on opposite sides of the world, both men committed their lives to reforming the religious life and to attaining the experience of awakening in their respective traditions. To this end, both encouraged the study of their foundational texts, together with the earnest (...) practice of meditation and contemplation. Both commented on the issues of a kataphatic and apophatic approach to ultimate reality, finding in the latter a fuller description (by non-description!) of the goal of the spiritual life. Controlling thoughts and developing intuitive wisdom were practices that united the two men, aiming to establish a constant awareness of the numinous moment by moment. In this way, they rejoiced in the freedom from fear bestowed by awakening to a clear vision of things as they really are in the unity of the infinite yet intimate being that undergirds all things. Ultimately, they seem to part company in the practice of devotion, with Bonaventure pointing to the love of the crucified Jesus, and yet even here, the remembrance of the name of the Buddha or the Christ was valued by both as an authentic path to the journey's goal. Korean Buddhism is distinctive within the broader field of East Asian Buddhism for the pronounced degree of its syncretic discourse. Korean Buddhist monks throughout history have demonstrated a marked tendency in their essays and commentaries to focus on the solution of disagreements between various sects within Buddhism, or on conflicts between Buddhism and other religions. While a strong ecumenical tendency is noticeable in the writings of dozens of Korean monks, among the most prominent in regard to their exposition of syncretic (...) philosophy are Wŏnhyo 元曉 617-686), Pojo Chinul 普照知訥 1158-1210) and Hamheo Kihwa 涵虚己和 1376-1433). There is a great similarity between process theology and Chinul’s Buddhist thought. They share the conception of a mutual immanence and interaction between the world and the ultimate reality. They also share the view that the true or sanctified self is an incarnation and expression of the ultimate reality in and for the world. However, Chinul’s Buddhist thought is weak in dealing with the aspect of redemption.

1981년 돈오돈수(頓悟頓修)를 표방한 조계종 종정 성철(性徹, 1912-1993)이 보조지눌(普照知訥, 1158-1210)의 돈오점수(頓悟漸修) 사상을 비판한 이래 진행된 돈점논쟁(頓漸論諍) 속에서 지눌 선(禪) 사상은 다각도로 고찰되어 왔다. 이 논쟁의 주요 초점 중 하나는 지눌의 돈오점수론이 그가 만년에 강조한 간화선(看話禪)과 사상적 연결성을 지닐 수 있는가 하는 문제이다. 돈오점수는 불교의 이론적 가르침[敎]에 대한 지적 이해를 바탕으로 하는 해오(解悟)와 연결된 수행법인 반면, 간화선은 지적 이해[知解]를 완전히 떠나 증오(證悟)로 이어진다고 여겨지는 수행법이기 때문이다. 돈오돈수를 지지하는 측에서는 깨달음에 있어서 지적 요소를 강하게 부정하면서 돈오점수와 간화선의 연결성을 인정하지 않았고, 지눌이 만년에 간화선을 (...) 강조한 것도 그가 사상적 전환을 겪었기 때문이라고 주장한다. 한편 지눌의 사상체계를 지지하는 측에서는 돈오점수론과 간화선의 수증론적 연결성을 설명하려 하였다. 이 입장에서는 해오가 비록 지적 이해를 매개로 얻어지지만 점수를 거쳐 결국 증오로 연결될 수 있음을 주장하였다. 결국 돈점논쟁은 깨달음과 닦음에 있어서 지해(知解)의 역할과 정당성을 중심으로 돈오점수론과 간화선이 정합성을 가지는가의 구도로 접근될 수 있다. 이 논문에서는 돈오점수론과 간화선의 사상적 연결 문제를 해오와 증오의 의미와 관계를 재고함으로써 논의해 보려 한다. 논쟁의 구도 속에서 해오는 증오와 대비되어 전혀 인정되지 않거나 혹은 단지 불완전한 깨달음으로만 여겨진 경향이 있다. 먼저 기존의 해오와 증오에 대한 해석을 깨달음과 닦음에 내재된 근본적 문제를 바탕으로 비판적으로 살펴보고, 그리고 나서 지눌이 제시하는 해오의 의미를 성기(性起)의 개념을 바탕으로 재조명한다. 이를 바탕으로 해오와 증오의 수증론적 관계를 논의한 후, 마지막으로 돈오점수와 간화선 수행의 연결성의 문제를 고찰한다.
