Amnesia, Partial Amnesia, and Delayed Recall among Adult Survivors of Childhood Trauma.Mary R. Harvey & Judith Lewis Herman - 1994 - Consciousness and Cognition 3 (3-4):295-306.
Clinical experience suggests that adult survivors of childhood trauma arrive at their memories in a number of ways, with varying degrees of associated distress and uncertainty and, in some cases, after memory lapses of varying duration and extent. Among those patients who enter psychotherapy as a result of early abuse, three general patterns of traumatic recall are identified: relatively continuous and complete recall of childhood abuse experiences coupled with changing interpretations of these experiences, partial amnesia for abuse events, accompanied by (...)

  7. Classical origins of the Aharonov-Bohm effect.R. M. Herman - 1992 - Foundations of Physics 22 (5):713-725.
It is shown, in a large variety of manifestations, that the Aharonov—Bohm effect has classical counterparts in aspects concerning energy and momentum balance. No counterexamples are found in the cases considered, although whenever image charges shield the magnetic field region from the electric field of the passing electron the classical momentum effects, while present, would not be observable. Similarly, if the magnetic flux is maintained by superconductors, magnetic shielding will also render the classical energy effect unobservable. Partial shieldings of either (...)

Type theory and formal proof: an introduction.R. P. Nederpelt & Herman Geuvers - 2014 - New York: Cambridge University Press. Edited by Herman Geuvers.
Type theory is a fast-evolving field at the crossroads of logic, computer science and mathematics. This gentle step-by-step introduction is ideal for graduate students and researchers who need to understand the ins and outs of the mathematical machinery, the role of logical rules therein, the essential contribution of definitions and the decisive nature of well-structured proofs. The authors begin with untyped lambda calculus and proceed to several fundamental type systems culminating in the well-known and powerful Calculus of Constructions. The book (...)

Scientists from particle, astroparticle and nuclear physics participated in the workshop. The workshop examined promising opportunities for neutrino physics in the intermediate term, including possible new small to mid-scale experiments, US contributions to large experiments, upgrades to existing experiments, R&D plans and theory. Chinese Philosophers.Laurence C. Wu, Shu-Hsien Liu, David L. Hall, Francis Soo, Jonathan R. Herman, John Knoblock, Chad Hansen, Kwong-Loi Shun & Warren G. Frisina - 1991 - In Robert L. Arrington (ed.), A Companion to the Philosophers. Malden, Mass.: Wiley-Blackwell. pp. 39–107.
Some of the authors of the essays on Chinese philosophers prefer the pin yin system of romanization for Chinese names and words, while others prefer the Wade‐Giles system. Given that both systems are in wide use today, important names and words are given in both their pin yin and Wade‐Giles formulations. The author's preference is printed first, followed by the alternative romanization within brackets.

Virtue language in nineteenth-century orientalism: A case study in historical epistemology.Herman Paul - 2017 - Modern Intellectual History 14 (3):689-715.
Historical epistemology is a form of intellectual history focused on “the history of categories that structure our thought, pattern our arguments and proofs, and certify our standards for explanation”. Under this umbrella, historians have been studying the changing meanings of “objectivity,” “impartiality,” “curiosity,” and other virtues believed to be conducive to good scholarship. While endorsing this historicization of virtues and their corresponding vices, the present article argues that the meaning and relative importance of these virtues and vices can only be (...)

Grene's essay on the most perplexing of Aristotle's works is the least satisfactory in her study. Though she acknowledges that the path of (...)

My position concerning universald research consists of four theses: universal grammar has as its object empirical linguistic facts; to account for these facts, a linguistic theory in symbiosis with the grammar is needed; this theory reconstructs language in rationalistic terms; universals research in its dependence on a rationalistic theory of language has to be epistemologically motivated, i.e. universal constraints on the grammar as well as on language have to be elaborated without to be directed towards a foundational or ontological explanation (...)

Dialogical Demand: Discursive Position Repertoires for a Local and Global UK Sex Industry.Adam R. Crossley & Rebecca Lawthom - 2015 - Journal for the Theory of Social Behaviour 45 (2):261-286.
The increasing incidence of ‘trafficking’ has added an incontestably disturbing dimension to the contestable nature of a ‘non-trafficked’ UK sex industry. Men who buy sex remain under-researched, though some studies have indicated ambivalence within men's attitudes. This study combines a critical discursive psychology in support of dialogical self theory. Secondary data, from prominent UK media resources, were analysed using Edley's method of combining ‘interpretative repertoires’, ‘ideological dilemmas’ and ‘subject positions’. Contrasting discursive practices indicative of wider ideological conflict were found. Discursive (...)

The Dialogues as Dramatic Rehearsal: Plato’s Republic and the Moral Accounting Metaphor.Albert R. Spencer - 2013 - The Pluralist 8 (2):26-35.
In John Dewey & Moral Imagination, Steven Fesmire blames "Plato's low estimation of imagination in the Republic and Ion" for the denigration of imagination's role in moral deliberation (61). He argues that John Dewey's dramatic rehearsal better integrates imagination into the process of moral deliberation. His treatment of Plato represents a habit among pragmatists to reduce Dewey's reading of Plato to the polemics present in major works, such as The Quest for Certainty. In fact, Plato was Dewey's favorite philosopher, and (...)

Herman Melville’s Moby Dick (1851) may have set the lengthy standard for books treating whales, but D. Graham Burnett has more than matched that standard with his hefty, almost eight-hundred page tome, The Sounding of the Whale. The requisite explanatory subtitle specifies the author’s intent to write the history of what he refers to as “whale science” spanning the twentieth century. The book divides rather naturally into three complementary sections. The opening two chapters discuss early conservation efforts aimed at managing (...)
