In this paper I present a formalization of the theory of ideal concepts applied to the concept of God. It is done within a version of the Simplest Quantified Modal Logic (SQML) and attempts to solve three meta-problems related to the concept of God: the unicity of extension problem, the homogeneity/heterogeneity problem and the problem of conceptual unity.

Roads to Reference offers a highly valuable contribution to the theory of reference. The arguments in this book are quite convincing and the overall picture presented in it is quite attractive. In what follows I would like to present some critical comments regarding the first chapter of the book, Demonstratives and Conflicting Intentions.

Scientificity is essentially methodology. The use of information technology as methodological instruments in science has been increasing for decades, this raises the question: Does this transform science? This question is the subject of the Special Issue in Minds and Machines “The epistemological significance of methods in computer simulation and machine learning”. We show that there is a technological change in this area that has three methodological and epistemic consequences: methodological opacity, reproducibility issues, and altered forms of justification.

In antiquity living beings are inextricably linked to the cosmos as a whole. Ancient biology and cosmology depend upon one another and therefore a complete understanding of one requires a full account of the other. This volume addresses many philosophical issues that arise from this double relation. Does the cosmos have a soul of its own? Why? Is either of these two disciplines more basic than the other, or are they at the same explanatory level? What is the relationship between (...) living things and the cosmos as a whole? If the cosmos is an animate intelligent being, what is the nature of its thoughts and actions? How do these relate to our own thoughts and actions? Do they pose a threat to our autonomy as subjects and agents? And what is the place of zoogony in cosmogony? In this paper we consider the modal logic with both $$\Box $$ and $$\Diamond $$ arising from Kripke models with a crisp accessibility and whose propositions are valued over the standard Gödel algebra $$[0,1]_G$$. We provide an axiomatic system extending the one from Caicedo and Rodriguez (J Logic Comput 25(1):37–55, 2015) for models with a valued accessibility with Dunn axiom from positive modal logics, and show it is strongly complete with respect to the intended semantics. The axiomatizations of the most (...) usual frame restrictions are given too. We also prove that in the studied logic it is not possible to get $$\Diamond $$ as an abbreviation of $$\Box $$, nor vice-versa, showing that indeed the axiomatic system we present does not coincide with any of the mono-modal fragments previously axiomatized in the literature. Siguiendo la propuesta paradigmática formulada por Giorgio Agamben en torno al estado de excepción como dispositivo constitutivo del orden jurídico estatal, este trabajo confronta críticamente una de los sustratos básicos que siempre ha rondado la teoría republicana, tanto en sus vertiente vinculadas a los trabajos de Hannah Arendt como a los de Phillip Pettit, y que es habitualmente presentada como un pregunta inclusiva, a saber: cómo hacer posible la política y la libertad no solo para algunos sino para todos/as. Sostenemos (...) que la propuesta de Agamben establece un pie forzado que obliga al republicanismo a repensar sus condiciones de posibilidad de manera más radicalmente crítica de lo que habitualmente lo ha hecho – una radicalidad que incluso podría obligar a ir más allá de la forma estatal que por siglos ha acompañado a la promesa de inclusión republicana. Colateralmente, consideram-se algumas implicações clínicas.En términos de las proposiciones largamente desarrolladas por Jacques Derrida, se introduce la desconstrucción en el campo psicoanalítico, a propósito y con objeto de uno de sus núcleos conceptuales más estabilizados, el de complejo de Edipo. Este ensayo ofrece un análisis del argumento de Crisipo a favor de que todo tiene una causa en Cicerón, De Fato 20. Para ello, se discute en qué sentido el argumento es fatalista y si el tipo de fatalismo que implica alienta la inacción. Asimismo, se presenta una nueva interpretación de la réplica de Crisipo al Argumento Perezoso en Eusebio, Praep. ev. 6.8.28. En particular se sostiene que, para Crisipo, la relación entre sucesos codestinados es analítica: a fin de determinar (...) qué sucesos futuros están codestinados con sucesos presentes, basta analizar los conceptos que se emplean para describir los primeros. /// In this paper I undertake an examination of Chrysippus' argument in Cicero's De Fato 20 for the view that everything has a cause, by discussing in what sense it is fatalist and whether the kind of fatalism it implies encourages idleness. A novel interpretation is offered of Chrysippus' refutation of the Idle Argument at Eusebius, Praep. ev. 6.8.28. In particular, I argue that for Chrysippus the connection between co-fated events is analytic: to determine which future events are co-fated with present ones, it is sufficient to analyse the concepts that are used to describe the former. When an English translation of Being and Event appeared in 2005, Alain Badiou took the opportunity to reminisce about the initial French publication some twenty years before: “at that moment I was quite aware of having written a ‘great’ book of philosophy.” He located that greatness in four “affirmations” and one “radical thesis.”.

Two paradigms have guided emotion research over the past decades. The dual-system view embraces the long-held Western belief, espoused most prominently by decision-making and social cognition researchers, that emotion and reason are often at odds. The integrative view, which asserts that emotion and cognition work synergistically, has been less explored experimentally. However, the integrative view (a) may help explain several findings that are not easily accounted for by the dual-system approach, and (b) is better supported by a growing body of (...) evidence from human neuroanatomy that has often been overlooked by experimental neuroscience. Die Verlässlichkeit von Computersimulationen ist ein vieldiskutiertes Thema, das immer wieder auch für Schlagzeilen hinsichtlich des Umgangs mit wissenschaftlichen Ergebnissen sorgt. Computersimulationen werden häufig dort unternommen, wo Erfahrungen bezüglich des Verhaltens von Systemen fehlen und physische Tests aufgrund der Größe, Komplexität oder Einmaligkeit des Systems nicht in Frage kommen. Dennoch sollen mit ihrer Unterstützung Entscheidungen mit weitreichenden möglichen Folgen getroffen werden, die zu hohen monetären und moralischen Kosten führen können.

We study structural rules in the context of multi-valued logics with finitely-many truth-values. We first extend Gentzen’s traditional structural rules to a multi-valued logic context; in addition, we propos some novel structural rules, fitting only multi-valued logics. Then, we propose a novel definition, namely, structural rules completeness of a collection of structural rules, requiring derivability of the restriction of consequence to atomic formulas by structural rules only. The restriction to atomic formulas relieves the need to concern logical rules in the (...) derivation. (shrink)

O Tratado da Felicidade (ou Tratado da Bem-Aventurança), escrito por Tomás de Aquino como parte de sua Suma de Teologia, procura determinar qual é o fim último da vida humana, ou seja, o bem supremo da vida humana, e quais são os outros bens que não podem ser isso de nenhum modo. Tomás mostra conhecer uma divisão tríplice dos bens do homem, que inclui os bens exteriores, os bens do corpo e os bens da alma. A estes Tomás acrescenta um (...) tipo de bem que podemos chamar de “intermediário”, na medida em que se situa acima do homem e abaixo de Deus, e consiste no universo e nos anjos. Certamente, Tomás se refere também a Deus. No entanto, há mais um tipo de bem que Tomás menciona neste Tratado. É o bem em comum, ou bem em geral. Neste artigo, procurarei mostrar como Tomás de Aquino trata desses seis tipos de bens no Tratado da Felicidade, e indicarei se esse tratamento confirma ou não algumas teses de alguns estudiosos de Tomás de Aquino, como, por exemplo, a tese de que o homem não tem nenhum fim último natural. Resumen:Una gran diversidad de seres vivos y valores humanos son invisibles a la cultura global prevaleciente, que asocia la palabra biodiversidad con grandes organismos tales como mamíferos y árboles. Paradójicamente, la mayoría de la biodiversidad está compuesta por pequeños organismos que permanecen invisibles para la sociedad global y son subrepresentados en la filosofía, la ciencia y la educación. Para contribuir a resolver esta “ceguera biocultural” sobre la diversidad biológica y de valores, en este artículo presentamos conceptos y prácticas de la (...) filosofía ambiental de campo. Nos enfocamos en la actividad “ecoturismo con lupa” para ilustrar “lentes conceptuales” que amplifican la apreciación de la diversidad biológica y cultural. Esta actividad integra las ciencias, artes, humanidades y ética para apreciar la belleza y relevancia de los pequeños organismos y los múltiples lenguajes, formas de conocimientos y valores que diferentes tradiciones culturales otorgan a la biodiversidad. Los participantes practican formas de pensamiento analógico para co-crear conocimiento y expresiones bioculturales propias, en vez de ser receptores pasivos de información. Finalmente, la práctica de la filosofía ambiental de campo combina actividades corporales y sensoriales con lecturas teóricas que proveen fundamentos conceptuales para cultivar una ética biocultural que orienta formas de co-habitación con pequeños y grandes co-habitantes, humanos y otros-que-humanos, con quienes compartirnos tanto nuestros hábitats locales como la biosfera global. During the second half of the twentieth century, economics exported its logic - utility maximization - to the analysis of several human activities or realities: a tendency that has been called "economic imperialism". This book explores the concept termed by John Davis as "reverse imperialism", whereby economics has been seen in recent years to have taken in elements from other disciplines. Economics and Other Disciplines sheds light on the current state and possible future development of economics by focusing on it (...) from a philosophical perspective, broadening the concept of rationality in economic theory. The beliefs that prevail in the world today make up a physicalist worldview. This book argues that this pervasive view is harmful for economics as a social science. La oposición entre Democracia y Liberalismo tiene su punto de tensión en la relación vida pública-vida privada. Para Roger Labrousse, la Democracia hace depender la vida privada del hombre de su vida pública, en tanto que para el Liberalismo la vida privada se antepone a la vida pública. Se trata de dos extremos que se articulan de modo complejo, a veces como complemento y a veces como conflicto. No podría ser de otro modo. Normalmente estas dicotomías tienen en una primera (...) mirada una apariencia de claridad, que rápidamente en un análisis más exigente comienza a desdibujarse. En este artículo se reproducen algunos párrafos seleccionado de cinco autores seleccionados a los que se hace un breve comentario, teniendo en cuenta principalmente la oposición entre Democracia y Liberalismo. En cada caso el comentario busca mostrar la debilidad de la reflexión cuando se despliega sobre el fondo de esta oposición en términos demasiado rígidos. (shrink)
