Summary A pupil of Köhler and von Hornbostel in Berlin, Arnheim published an article in the Musical Quarterly in 1984, where he applied the principles of visual composition to the musical form. In a painting, for example, the forces of visual composition are essential for aesthetic enjoyment; in music, sounds are essential as they are always occurring in time, and this constitutes the main dynamic vector of music. Starting with the tetrachord of ancient Greek music and analysing the relationships between (...) notes in the major and minor scales, Arnheim identifies what in the Western musical tradition represents the basis on which each note must relate: the tonal centre, the attractive motor that determines the perceptual dynamics of musical expression. Two examples, taken from Schubert and Béla Bartók, show us how the structure of the melodic construction is essential in generating different states of mind; Arnheim, however, does not stop at the simple eliciting of an emotion, but situates the musical structure in a more general framework, which refers to perceptual patterns belonging to any sphere, mental or physical, thanks to which we experience our reality. In a wide variety of publications,1 Johannes B. Metz programatically represented a new political theology of subject, society, history, and future. This theology participates intensely in the lively, ongoing discourse on the political and theological actuality and significance of the critical theory of society, religion and future set forth by the Marxist, Walter Benjamin.2 The purpose of this study is to illuminate several connections between Benjamin's critical theory and Metz's political theology, particularly with respect to the present stage of (...) development in advanced capitalistic society and to their future. This paper presents the results of the new interdisciplinary research done on Leonhard Rauwolf’s herbarium with plants from the Middle East, which was later owned by Emperor Rudolf II. Using various sources, it examines how the herbarium came into the imperial collections, Early Modern methods of botanical research as described by Rauwolf in his printed travelogue, and how the illustrations for the printed book were produced from the specimens in the herbarium. The appendix (available in the online version) presents (...) the new corrected botanical identification of the c. 200 plants in the fourth volume of Rauwolf’s herbarium, and a correct transcription of the Early Modern Latin and vernacular names Rauwolf collected for these plants. Rudolf Eucken (1846-1926) war Philosophieprofessor in Jena, der einen lebensphilosophisch angehauchten Neoidealismus vertrat und dessen Schriften im gebildeten Bürgertum breite Resonanz fanden. 1908 erhielt er den Nobelpreis für Literatur und galt seitdem als einer der renommiertesten deutschen Intellektuellen mit internationaler Ausstrahlungskraft. Eucken sammelte in den Jahren vor 1914 einen Kreis von Anhängern und Gleichgesinnten um sich, der sich als geistig-moralische - "kulturkritische" - Sammlungsbewegung verstand. Während des Ersten Weltkriegs trat Rudolf Eucken als unermüdlicher Propagandist der deutschen Sache im (...) Inland wie im neutralen Ausland auf. Nach dem Krieg gab sich die von ihm ins Leben gerufene Bewegung mit der Gründung des "Euckenbunds" eine feste organisatorische Gestalt mit 20-25 Ortsgruppen und mehr als 1000 Mitgliedern (darunter auch Gustav Stresemann). Der Euckenbund und die vierteljährlich erscheinende Zeitschrift des Bundes ("Die Tatwelt") existierten auch nach dem Tod Rudolf Euckens 1926 weiter. Seit 1928 betrieben die Witwe des Philosophen, Irene Eucken, und ihre Tochter Ida zudem ein "Rudolf-Eucken-Haus" als internationale Begegnungsstätte der Universität Jena. Auch der Sohn Euckens, der heute viel bekanntere Nationalökonom Walter Eucken, war zeitweise in der "Eucken-Bewegung" stark engagiert. Euckenbund, Euckenhaus und "Die Tatwelt" bestanden auch nach 1933 weiter und betätigten sich, subventioniert vom Auswärtigen Amt, in der deutschen Kulturpropaganda, ohne sich aber vom Regime im Sinne der NS-Ideologie,,gleichschalten" zu lassen. Im Jenaer Rudolf-Eucken-Haus fanden seit Mitte der 1930er Jahren philosophisch-wissenschaftliche Tagungen statt, an der eine ganze Reihe bekannter Geistes- und Naturwissenschaftler teilnahmen (u. a. Helmut Schelsky, Carl-Friedrich von Weizsäcker, Gotthard Günther, Pascual Jordan, Gerhard Ritter, Walter Eucken). Erst nach dem Tod Irene und Ida Euckens 1941/43 löste sich der Euckenbund auf. Die Studie verfolgt den Werdegang Rudolf Euckens, setzt sich mit seiner Philosophie und Weltanschauung auseinander und zeigt die programmatische und organisatorische Entwicklung der,,Eucken-Bewegung" und deren Aktivitäten auf. Allgemein beschäftigt sich die Arbeit mit den geistigen und politischen Befindlichkeiten des kulturkritisch gesinnten liberal-konservativen Bildungsbürgertums zwischen dem wilhelminischen Kaiserreich, der Weimarer Republik und dem Nationalsozialismus. Schlusslogische Letztbegründung is a collection of essays in honor of Kurt Walter Zeidler. Mr. Zeidler is a distinguished Kant- and Neo-Kantian-scholar who has reconstructed Kant's concept of transcendental logic in connection with the logic of the concept of Hegel and the logic of symbolization of Peirce. (cf. Zeidler: Grundriss der transzendentalen Logik, 3rd ed., Wien 2017) He has most notably inquired intensively into the relation of transcendental logic to philosophy of science (cf. For the first time, Walter Benjamin's critical comments on educator and philosopher Rudolf Steiner are examined in depth. In particular, Benjamin detected protofascist themes within Steiner's seemingly progressive notion of child-centered, arts-based, developmentally appropriate early childhood education. But this does not mean that Benjamin completely rejected Steiner's work as mere ideology. Instead, we can find the subtle trace of Steiner's influence in Benjamin's own reflections on childhood. Here Tyson E. Lewis calls for a dialectical approach modeled by Benjamin (...) that allows us to critically interrogate Steiner's progressive education for protofascist tendencies, while also redeeming various insights into the lives of children. This dialectical approach to understanding the complex relationship between progressive education and fascism is now more urgent than ever before. (shrink)

On 15 October 1959, Rudolf Carnap, a leading member of the recently founded Vienna Circle, came to lecture at the Bauhaus in Dessau, southwest of Berlin. Carnap had just finished his magnum opus, The Logical Construction of the World, a book that immediately became the bible of the new antiphilosophy announced by the logical positivists. From a small group in Vienna, the movement soon expanded to include an international following, and in the sixty years since has exerted a powerful (...) sway over the conduct of the philosophy of science as well as over wide branches of philosophy, economics, psychology, and physics. The site of Carnap’s lecture that day, the Dessau Bauhaus, was a stunning building designed by Walter Gropius and dedicated just three years earlier. Protected by its flat roof and glass walls, the artists, architects, weavers, and furniture designers had made the school a citadel of high modernism. It was here that Carnap addressed an enthusiastic audience on “Science and Life.” “I work in science,” he began, “and you in visible forms; the two are only different sides of a single life.”1 In this paper I will explore this “single life” of which the new philosophy and the new art were to be different facets; in the process, I hope to cast light on the shared modernist impulses that drove both disciplines in the interwar years. 1. How can Hume account for the meaning of causal claims? The causal realist, I argue, is, on Hume's view, saying something nonsensical. I argue that both realist and agnostic interpretations of Hume are inconsistent with his view of language and intentionality. But what then accounts for this illusion of meaning? And even when we use causal terms in accordance with Hume’s definitions, we seem merely to be making disguised self-reports. I argue that Hume’s view is not as implausible as it (...) sounds by exploring his conception of language. (shrink)

Neurostimulation to restore cognitive and physical functions is an innovative and promising technique for treating patients with severe brain injury that has resulted in a minimally conscious state (MCS). The technique may involve electrical stimulation of the central thalamus, which has extensive projections to the cerebral cortex. Yet it is unclear whether an improvement in neurological functions would result in a net benefit for these patients. Quality-of-life measurements would be necessary to determine whether any benefit of neurostimulation outweighed any harm (...) in their response to different degrees of cognitive and physical disability. These measures could also indicate whether the technique could be ethically justified and whether surrogates could give proxy consent to its use on brain-injured patients. (shrink)

In this first issue of the new Erkenntnis, it seems fitting to recall at least briefly the character and the main achievements of its distinguished namesake and predecessor. The old Erkenntnis came into existence when Hans Reichenbach and Rudolf Carnap assumed the editorship of the Annalen der Philosophie and gave the journal its new title and its characteristic orientation; the first issue appeared in 1930. The journal was backed by the Gesellschaft f r Empirische Philosophie in Berlin, in which (...) Reichenbach, Walter Dubislav, and Kurt Grelling were the leading figures, and by the Verein Ernst Mach in Vienna, whose philosophical position was strongly influenced by that of the Vienna Circle; a brief account of these groups, and of several kindred schools and trends of scientific and philosophical thinking, was given by Otto Neurath in his 'Historische Anmerkungen' (Vol. 1, pp. 311-314). As Reichenbach noted in his introduction to the first issue, the editors of Erkenntnis were concerned to carry on philosophical inquiry in close consideration of the procedures and results of the various scientific disciplines: analysis of scientific research and its presuppositions was expected to yield insight into the character of all human knowledge, while at the same time, the objectivity and the progressive character of science inspired the convection that philosophy need not remain an array of conflicting 'systems', but could attain to the status of objective knowledge. As a student in Berlin and Vienna during those years, I experienced vividly the exhilarating sense, shared by those close to those two philosophical groups, of being jointly engaged in a novel and challenging intellectual enterprise in which philosophical issues were dealt with 'scientifically' and philosophical claims were amenable to support or criticism by logically rigorous arguments. The 'logical analyses' and 'rational reconstructions' set forth by adherents of this program often made extensive use of the concepts, methods, and symbolic apparatus of contemporary symbolic logic, whose importance for philosophy was the subject of Carnap's article, 'Die Alte und die Neue Logik', which appeared in the first issue..
