The book is a compendium of select philosophical and literary writings by Salomo Friedlaender/Mynona spanning the first half of the twentieth century, from 1904 to 1946. It is the first English language edition to integrate his philosophical works, literary grotesques and select correspondences with a range of well-known contemporaries, providing a unique glimpse into the thinking mind and literary/philosophical production of one of Germany's most important but almost forgotten intellectuals of the expressionist era and beyond.

Der Band versammelt erstmals alle autobiographischen Texte Friedlaender/Mynonas, darunter zwei Grotesken, bisher unveröffentlichte Entwürfe und die Akten einer kuriosen Promotion. Das Selbstbild ergänzen zahlreiche Anekdoten (220 Seiten), in denen seine Persönlichkeit durch den Blick von Zeitgenossen fassbar wird. Die Signaturen (mitunterzeichnete Aufrufe und Erklärungen) zeigen seine politischen Überzeugungen und sein soziales Engagement, besonders seit den 1920er Jahren. Hinzu kommen Dokumente und Materialien: das fragmentarische Adressbuch, das Merkbüchlein für ausgeliehene Bücher und Manuskripte (1933-42), die von ihm gewidmeten Bücher mit teils schwungvollen (...) Anreden, seine rekonstruierte Bibliothek sowie ein bislang unbekanntes Gedicht des Vaters aus dem Jahr 1888, das zusammen mit dem Stammbaum ein Licht auf die Vorfahren wirft. Geschrieben 1936-38, am Vorabend des Zweiten Weltkriegs, mit furchtlosem Blick auf die Medusenhäupter der Diktaturen, eines Dritten Reiches, eines sowjetischen Kollektivismus, auch eines Papstes, ist dieser Aufruf zur Selbsterkenntnis der Macht der Vernunft, zur Autonomie des ICH nach fast 80 Jahren noch von geradezu unheimlicher Aktualität. In konstruktiver Auseinandersetzung mit Kant und Ernst Marcus entwirft Friedlaender/Mynona das „System der Immanenz“, der Erfahrung, des Lebens. Es gibt auch „eine intelligente Wut,“ sagt er, „einen weisen Zorn gegen Irrtum, Lug, Trug“ und gegen (...) eine Toleranz, die alles zuläßt, anstatt von klar begründeter Position aus allen Zweifel und Opportunismus scharf abzuweisen. Der Mensch, hatte er schon vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg erklärt, „hat ein wahrhaft kolossales Vertrauen zum,Tode’“ – „er ist das wahre Rindvieh des Todes.“ Der Philosoph korrigiert nur die Druckfehler im Buch des Lebens. Salomo Friedlaender was a prolific German-Jewish philosopher, poet, and satirist. His Kant for Children is intended to help young people learn about Immanuel Kant’s philosophy. Friedlaender writes, “Morality is inherent in us organically. But its abstract formula should be imprinted on schoolchildren.” Published in 1924, 200 years after Kant’s birth, the book sparked interest in some quarters, attracting the attention of the first Newbery Award winner, Hendrik Willem van Loon, who corresponded with Friedlaender in 1933 requesting an English translation. (...) That didn’t happen. This is the first English translation of the book. During the National Socialist period, Kant for Children troubled the Nazis. They banned Friedlaender’s work. Rebecca Hanf, friend of Ernst Marcus, the philosopher who claimed to have resurrected Kant, recognized that Friedlaender’s Kant for Children could counter the Nazi appropriation of Kant and realign Kant with egalitarianism and anti-fascist politics, meaning the book has contemporary relevance in light of an international resurgence of fascism. A lifelong student of Kant’s works, Friedlaender deserves a wider audience among Kant scholars and students. This first English translation includes an introduction to Friedlaender as well as essays by Paul Mendes-Flohr, Sarah Holtman, Robert Louden, Kate Moran, Krista Thomason, and Jens Timmermann. For translating and editing Kant for Children, Bruce Krajewski received The 2023 Silvers Grant for Work in Progress from the Robert B. Silvers Foundation. The Robert B. In einfachen Fragen und Antworten, ohne Fremdwörter, bietet das Buch eine gründliche Einführung in Kants Ethik, Religionsphilosophie und Erkenntnistheorie. Der Katechismus, 1978 faksimiliert, will, ebenfalls in Dialogform und vom Standpunkt Kants, auch diejenigen zur Vernunft bringen, die mit übersinnlichen Kräften und okkulten Praktiken umzugehen glauben. Der Mahnruf gibt die erste kenntnisreiche Darstellung von Leben (...) und Werk des Kantianers Ernst Marcus (1856-1928), zugleich eine unvermindert aktuelle Diagnose der Orientierungsprobleme unserer modernen Existenz. Erstmals veröffentlicht werden hier die späten Abhandlungen aus dem Pariser Exil. Sie dokumentieren, wie Friedlaender/Mynona seinen Grundgedanken in einer stetig weiter formalisierten, doch immer poetischen Sprache ausarbeitet. Er will aufrütteln aus Resignation, Selbstvergessen und Selbstverdinglichung; er zeigt, wie die selbstverschuldete Hetero- in Autonomie umgewandelt werden kann. Im letzten Essay, Ideenmagie (1945/46), nimmt er noch Stellung zur Atombombe. Mit der Formel ICH-Heliozentrum ersetzt er seit 1939 jenes Schlüsselwort, das mit seinem Namen verbunden bleibt: Schöpferische Indifferenz. Gemeint ist der homo noumenon im (...) Sinne Kants: der Vernunftmensch, die allen Menschen gemeinsame, einheitliche Form eines rein intelligiblen Ich. The objective of this research is to find the meeting point between the second precept of Pancasila and the global ethics of Kung. The article also discusses the value of the second precept of Pancasila as found in the global ethics. This research is intended to recognise human rights as the convergence of the second sila (principle) of Pancasila, namely, 'a just and civilised humanity' with Hans Kung's global ethics. The method used in this research is a literature study containing (...) relevant theories. The second principle of Pancasila, Kemanusiaan yang Adil dan Beradab, is the basis for understanding the life of humanity, unity and justice in Indonesia and becomes the basis for humans to understand themselves and others. CONTRIBUTION: This research offers significant insights into the value of human rights as a meeting point between the second sila of Pancasila and Hans Kung's global ethics. The second sila of Pancasila and Hans Kung's global ethics emphasise that everyone has rights. Human rights do not contradict with the typical Indonesian culture of deliberation and mutual cooperation, because the second principle of Pancasila, namely, a just and civilised humanity, is the basis for ensuring human rights. The Constitution of Indonesia of 1945, article 27 paragraph 1 also guarantees human rights. Human rights do not encourage individualism; instead, they protect individuals and groups. Human rights are not meant to promote egoism, but they help to maintain solidarity among people and ensure the well-being of society. They are a means to respect human dignity and protect the weak. The congregation is challenged by modern times that require various life adjustments, including priestly pastoral ministry. Therefore, this study examined the pastoral ministry style for the parishioner’s rural community of St. Petrus Paulus Ampah Diocese in Palangka Raya. A descriptive qualitative approach was used with data collected using participatory observations, in-depth interviews and document studies. Furthermore, the data analysis involved reducing, displaying and process verification. The participants included parish priests, catechists and station council administrators. The results showed that the congregations (...) did not participate in church activities because the pastoral ministry style did not fulfil their needs, economic factors and lack of Catholic faith knowledge. Therefore, the church authorities in pastoral ministry should create a holistic and transformative congregation based on their needs. The current pastoral ministry practice is based on ecclesiastical organisation building and worship (liturgy) focused service. The church should simultaneously conduct catechism practices and charitable diaconia such as social, economic and spiritual activities. This was an interdisciplinary study that focused on practical and pastoral theology, catechesis and social sciences on Catholics’ pastoral ministry style for rural communities.Contribution: Importantly, it contributes to the literature on pastoral style reforms focusing on the congregation’s socio-economic life. Therefore, it can improve the congregation’s interests, ecclesiastical activities and independence. (shrink)

Environmental philosophy – broadly conceived as using philosophical tools to develop ideas related to environmental issues – is conducted and practised in highly diverse ways in different contexts and traditions in Asia. ‘Asian environmental philosophy’ can be understood to include Asian traditions of thought as well as grassroots perspectives on environmental issues in Asia. Environmental issues have sensitive political facets tied to who has the legitimacy to decide about how natural resources are used. Because of this, the works, practices, and (...) researchers in Asian environmental philosophy are exposed to being (mis)used by diverse stakeholders and actors to support political ends not related to environmental sustainability. Two processes are at play at the nexus of the construction of identities in relation to conceptualisations of nature: eco-orientalism and ecological nationalisms. This paper analyzes and exemplifies these dynamics through a conceptual framework that distinguishes ideological and socio-technical explanations of environmental degradation. Finally, to minimise the risks of political misuse, five pathways are presented to carefully help curate environmental, philosophical statements: contextualise, quantify uncertainty and ‘uniqueness’, downscale, confront claims with local realities and literature, and collaborate with researchers from other disciplines. Conjointly, these pathways aim at favouring intercultural collaboration while valuing diversity, thus supporting the development and exchanges in environmental philosophy in Asia and beyond. In Leben und Werk Johann Salomo Semlers (1725-1791) spiegeln sich die Probleme der protestantischen Aufklärungstheologie des 18. Jahrhunderts und die Anfänge einer historisch-kritischen Theologie. Nachdem zuerst eine Biographie gegeben wurde, konzentriert sich die folgende Darstellung auf das Bibelverständnis und die Hermeneutik, die Christologie und Soteriologie sowie den Perfektibilitätsgedanken. Die Gründe für die einflußreiche Unterscheidung von christlicher Religion und wissenschaftlicher Theologie werden analysiert.

Kant’s commitment to universalism has been called into question since increasing attention has been paid to his work on race in the last 20 years. This worry can easily be applied to Kant’s work on education: when Kant describes education as allowing humanity to fulfill its Bestimmung (vocation), scholars might reasonably conclude that such a claim only applies certain racial groups. Yet Salomo Friedlaender claims that if Kant’s moral theory is taught to children, “Every person is valued according to (...) her morality and no longer, as in our crude days, according to ‘race’ or national and religious affiliation.” This interpretation of Kant might strike some contemporary Kant scholars as naïvely optimistic, but neo-Kantians were well aware of Kant’s racial claims. By examining how neo-Kantians read Kant’s work on race, I argue that Friedlaender’s interpretation provides a way of reading an unracialized Bestimmung in the pedagogy. (shrink)

Johann Salomo Semler's distinction between public and private religion has central significance for the theory of Christianity, particularly as this is conceived by Trutz Rendtorff. It serves the theory as a conceptual tool in order to be able to grasp the sociological problem of relating individual and society theologically and thus to describe modernity as a „chapter in the history of Christianity.“ Yet certain difficulties arise upon closer viewing. In Semler the distinction rests on the effort to set a (...) free private religion apart from public religion. In this it is indebted to a pointedly critical interest and can thus not be enlisted in support of a constructive definition of the relationship between church and Christianity. As a result, it becomes difficult to claim that the theory of Christianity can be based upon the period of theological enlightenment. Instead, it is tempting to take up the critical starting impulse of Semler's distinction and interpret it as a figural reflection with which theology reflects its relation to its own subject matter. The distinction of public and private religion thus finally moves surprisingly close to a systems-theoretical version of the relationship between individual and society. (shrink)

When the University of Halle-Wittenberg founded the Interdisciplinary Centre for Research into the European Enlightenment in 1993, it was following the destiny of its history as a centre of the Early Enlightenment in Germany which affected the whole of Europe and as one of the moving forces behind the Anthropological Turn. Research foci of the Centre have been and are Enlightenment anthropology, Enlightenment in the reference field of early modem esotericism, university history, philanthropism and the Garden Kingdom of Dessau-W rlitz; (...) more recent emphasis has been on the Early Enlightenment as a field of experimentation and the foundation of cultural models for the Modern Age. The results of this research have been published since Autumn 1995 in the Centres' research publications series entitled University of Halle Series on the European Enlightenment. In addition, there have been relevant works produced outside the Centre. Two to four volumes are published annually (monographs, collected volumes, commentaries on sources). (shrink)
