Hearing/seeing dread: thought of distortion and transformation in Kafka’s The Burrow and Odradek.Michiko Oki - 2018 - Journal for Cultural Research 22 (1):16-26.
In Kafka’s unfinished story, The Burrow, an unidentified subterranean creature struggles while digging in a burrow, constantly engulfed in anxiety for potential intruders. His obsessive anxiety starts to be materialised in his hearing of a noise everywhere and at constant intensity. Incessantly speculating the cause of this noise, his dreadful imagination first finds it as a swarm of small fries, eventually growing into a single gigantic monster threatening his burrow, as if desiring an irresistible entity that goes beyond the idea (...)

Flexing Gender Perception: Brain Potentials Reveal the Cognitive Permeability of Grammatical Information.Sayaka Sato, Aina Casaponsa & Panos Athanasopoulos - 2020 - Cognitive Science 44 (9):e12884.
A growing body of recent research suggests that verbal categories, particularly labels, impact categorization and perception. These findings are commonly interpreted as demonstrating the involvement of language on cognition; however, whether these assumptions hold true for grammatical structures has yet to be investigated. In the present study, we investigated the extent to which linguistic information, namely, grammatical gender categories, structures cognition to subsequently influence categorical judgments and perception. In a nonverbal categorization task, French–English bilinguals and monolingual English speakers made gender‐associated (...)

    Aristotle’s Uses of ἕνεκα.Takashi Oki - 2021 - Phronesis 67 (1):1-26.
I argue that Aristotle’s arguments in passages regarding chance in the Physics and in passages about ignorance in action in the Nicomachean and Eudemian Ethics presuppose two different uses of ‘for the sake of something’, which are able to explain respectively the wish or thought of agents and the type or nature of what they actually do. In my view, however, this does not commit Aristotle, in the ‘ignorance’ passages from the two Ethics, to holding that the type or nature (...)

    Aristotle’s Refutation of the Eleatic Argument in Physics I.8.Takashi Oki - 2021 - Peitho 12 (1).
In this paper, I show that Aristotle’s refutation of the Eleatic argument in Physics I.8 is based on the idea that a thing at the starting point of coming to be is composite and is made up of what underlies and a privation. In doing so, I clarify how the concept of accidentality as used in his solution should be understood in relation to the composite nature of what comes to be. I also suggest an explanation of why Aristotle’s discussion (...)

  15. Self-Determination of Death in Japan: A Review & Discussion.Atsushi Asai & Sayaka Sakamoto - 2007 - Eubios Journal of Asian and International Bioethics 17 (2):35-40.
Self-determination is a central concept in the field of bioethics and the most critical decision among the myriad of decisions concerning medical care is the decision to choose to die; “self-determination of death.” The purpose of this paper is to clarify the basic positions on self-determination of death held by present Japanese people and we tentatively sorted these positions into 10 arguments. We discuss the problems and implications of these positions revealed within our present review and conclude that a society (...)

MED26‐containing Mediator may orchestrate multiple transcription processes through organization of nuclear bodies.Hidefumi Suzuki, Kazuki Furugori, Ryota Abe, Shintaro Ogawa, Sayaka Ito, Tomohiko Akiyama, Keiko Horiuchi & Hidehisa Takahashi - 2023 - Bioessays 45 (4):2200178.
Mediator is a coregulatory complex that plays essential roles in multiple processes of transcription regulation. One of the human Mediator subunits, MED26, has a role in recruitment of the super elongation complex (SEC) to polyadenylated genes and little elongation complex (LEC) to non‐polyadenylated genes, including small nuclear RNAs (snRNAs) and replication‐dependent histone (RDH) genes. MED26‐containing Mediator plays a role in 3′ Pol II pausing at the proximal region of transcript end sites in RDH genes through recruitment of Cajal bodies (CBs) (...)

  29. Egyptians, Aliens, and Okies: Against the Sum of Averages.Christian Tarsney, Michael Geruso & Dean Spears - 2023 - Utilitas 35 (4):320-326.
Grill (2023) defends the sum of averages view (SAV), on which the value of a population is found by summing the average welfare of each generation or birth cohort. A major advantage of SAV, according to Grill, is that it escapes the Egyptology objection to average utilitarianism. But, we argue, SAV escapes only the most literal understanding of this objection, since it still allows the value of adding a life to depend on facts about other, intuitively irrelevant lives. Moreover, SAV (...)

The Study On The Influence Of Oki Mashahiro's Yoga Practice To Korean Yoga. 심준보 - 2015 - The Journal of Indian Philosophy 43 (43):179-216.

Aesthetic Engagement and Soundscape: A Case of Convenience Store Woman, a Contemporary Japanese Novel.Garcia Chambers - forthcoming - Estetika: The European Journal of Aesthetics 60 (1):36-54.
The award-winning novel Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata, first published in 2016 as コンビニ人間 (Konbini ningen), has received a lot of media attention from readers of both the original Japanese version and the English translation. For some, the novel depicts the wonder and vulnerability of a culture of convenience and conformity, while others have suggested that it highlights the gender discrimination faced by women in contemporary Japan. Yet the novel is ripe for analyses from other perspectives. This paper (...)

Platon und die Physis.Dietmar Koch, Irmgard Männlein-Robert & Niels Weidtmann (eds.)

Agriculture and working-class political culture: A lesson from The Grapes of Wrath.Paul B. Thompson - 2007 - Agriculture and Human Values 24 (2):165-177.
John Steinbeck’s 1939 novel can be given a reading that links events and the mentality of characters to mainstream schools of liberal and neo-liberal political theory: libertarianism, egalitarianism, and utilitarianism. Each of these schools is sketched in outline and applied to topics in rural political culture. While it is likely that Steinbeck himself would have identified with an egalitarian or utilitarian view, he resists the temptation to deny his Okie characters an authentic voice that matches none of these schools so (...)
