Le prix à payer par les femmes pour cette intégration fut d'abandonner leurs revendications propres - par exemple une meilleure protection de la maternité ou des crèches dans les usines. Ce renoncement peut être compris comme la preuve d'une forte conscience de classe de ces travailleuses ; cela (...) oblige les historien-ne-s à repenser les modèles et les normes de la formation de la classe ouvrière qui reste dominée par les expériences masculines. In Philosophy, there are two central questions concerning the phenomenon of lying: First, what is lying? And, secondly, what is morally wrong with lying? Those who deal with the second question usually ask if, when, and why lying can be morally justified. Hence, the liar and his reasons stand in the limelight. But what does actually happen when someone is lying, particularly to the addressee of the lie? What is harmed by lying? This paper goes the other way around and (...) focuses on the addressee. It defends the thesis that two principles are concerned: the respect of the person and his/her autonomy on the one hand. And trust on the other hand. Furthermore, the paper is an attempt to answer the question why we consider some lies worse than other lies: Namely, if something essential for our self-conception is involved. This paper is a discussion of Gabriel, Hülser and Schlotter’s 2009 article on a possible causal relation between Stoic logic and Frege. The paper provides detailed argument for why Rudolf Hirzel should not be taken as the qualified middleman in philosophical discussion with whom Frege learned what he ‘borrowed’ without acknowledgement from Stoic logic. Additionally, this paper offers some modest findings about some aspects of Frege's and Hirzel's lives and work habits, which may help us understand a little better Frege's (...) connection to Hirzel and to Stoic logic as well as Frege’s failure to acknowledge the Stoics. Author Susanne Claxton offers a new ecophenomenological perspective to Heidegger and his engagement with the Greeks, and an alternative to the ruling binary in environmental ethics of anthropocentrism and ecocentrism.

The author makes a review of the different meaning of the word “clone”. He refers on the new perspectives in fertilizing human eggs with somatic nucleus in order to obtain a zygote after having removed the original nucleus. The author moreover discusses the ethical implications.

The effects of climate change lead to increasing social injustice and hence justice is intrinsically linked to a socio-ecological transformation. In this study, we investigate whether justice sensitivity motivates pro-environmental intention and behavior and, if so, to what extent emotions and moral disengagement determine this process. For this purpose, we conducted two quota-sampling surveys. Multiple regression analyses in both studies suggest that a higher perception of injustice from a perpetrator’s, beneficiary’s, and observer’s perspective is associated with an increased PEI. However, (...) moral disengagement best predicted PEB and PEI. Guilt and authentic pride were found to be emotional predictors of PEI. Additionally, mediation analyses demonstrated that guilt mediates the connection between both perpetrator and beneficiary sensitivity and PEI. These results suggest that when the predominant originators of climate change perceive global climate injustice from the perspective of a beneficiary or a perpetrator, they experience guilt and have a higher PEI. Based on this mechanism, it seems promising to render global injustice more salient to those responsible for activities that lead to climate change to motivate them to adapt their behavior. The role of moral disengagement and victim sensitivity as barriers to pro-environmental behavior is discussed in this context. (shrink)

This book offers a new account of what it is to act for a normative reason. The first part of the book examines the problems of causal accounts of acting for reasons and suggests to solve them by a dispositional approach. The author argues for a dispositional account which unites epistemic, volitional, and executional dispositions in a complex normative competence. This ‘Normative Competence Account’ allows for more and less reflective ways of acting for normative reasons. The second part of the (...) book clarifies the relation between the normative reason that an agent acts for and his or her motivating reasons. It refutes the widely held ‘identity view’ that acting for a normative reason requires the normative reason to be identical with a motivating reason. The author describes how normative reasons are related to motivating reasons by a relation of correspondence, and proposes a new understanding of how normative reasons explain those actions that are performed for them. Determined by Reasons engages with current debates from a wide range of different philosophical areas, including action theory, metaethics, moral psychology, epistemology, and ontology, to develop a new account of acting for normative reasons. This value can make it prudentially rational for you to stay alive even if it appears highly unlikely that you have a bright future ahead of you. On March 11, 2020 the World Health Organization classified COVID‐19, caused by Sars‐CoV‐2, as a pandemic. Although not much was known about the new virus, the first outbreaks in China and Italy showed that potentially a large number of people worldwide could fall critically ill in a short period of time. A shortage of ventilators and intensive care resources was expected in many countries, leading to concerns about restrictions of medical care and preventable deaths. In order to be prepared for (...) this challenging situation, national triage guidance has been developed or adapted from former influenza pandemic guidelines in an increasing number of countries over the past few months. In this article, we provide a comparative analysis of triage recommendations from selected national and international professional societies, including Australia/New Zealand, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Pakistan, South Africa, Switzerland, the United States, and the International Society of Critical Care Medicine. We describe areas of consensus, including the importance of prognosis, patient will, transparency of the decision‐making process, and psychosocial support for staff, as well as the role of justice and benefit maximization as core principles. We then probe areas of disagreement, such as the role of survival versus outcome, long‐term versus short‐term prognosis, the use of age and comorbidities as triage criteria, priority groups and potential tiebreakers such as ‘lottery’ or ‘first come, first served’. Having explored a number of tensions in current guidance, we conclude with a suggestion for framework conditions that are clear, consistent and implementable. This analysis is intended to advance the ongoing debate regarding the fair allocation of limited resources and may be relevant for future policy‐making. (shrink)

In their paper ‘Why Frege did not plagiarize the Stoics’ (Gabriel et al. 2024), G. Gabriel, K. Hülser and D. Rami provide an extended set of arguments to show that Frege didn’t, and couldn’t have, plagiarize(d) the Stoics via Prantl’s long chapter on Stoic logic (Prantl 1855) or at all, thus attempting to counter Bobzien’s 2021 ‘Frege plagiarized the Stoics’. The present short essay is Part II of a four-part refutation of Gabriel et al. 2024: The authors repeatedly ‒ and (...) wrongly ‒ claim that there is a tradition of Stoic logic (and Stoic logical terminology) transmitted continuously from antiquity to the 19th century that was generally known in the 18th and 19th centuries. In this second part of the refutation, it is shown that, and why, the authors are entirely mistaken on every one of these points. (shrink)

Based on an empirical study of a research team in natural science, the author argues that collaborating scientists do not trust each other completely. Due to the inherent incompleteness of trust, epistemic trust among scientists is not sufficient to manage epistemic dependency in research teams. To mitigate the limitations of epistemic trust, scientists resort to specific strategies of indirect assessment such as dialoguing practices and the probing of explanatory responsiveness. Imagine that, through no fault of your own, you nd yourself at the bottom of a deep well. Thugs have picked up an innocent person | call him Bob | and have thrown him down the well. Bob is now falling towards you. If you do nothing, your body will cushion Bob's otherwise lethal fall. This will guarantee his survival, but it will kill you. If you shoot your ray gun, you vaporize and kill Bob, thereby saving your life. Are (...) you morally permitted to shoot your ray gun?Most people believe that self-defence against an innocent threat such as Bob is permissible. Judith Thomson (1991) and Frances Kamm (1987) have tried to justify this widely held belief. Jeff McMahan (2002) and Michael Otsuka (1994) have argued against it. In this paper, I contend that arguments from both sides of the debate mistakenly take the existence of an important asymmetry between Bob and you for granted. That way, they miss how similar Bob and you are, in that both of you happen to nd yourselves, undeservingly and through no fault of your own, in a situation in which you can secure your own survival only if you kill an innocent person. In this paper, I argue that despite certain differences, we are justi ed in focusing on the simliarities between Bob and you, and that you should thus flip a coin to decide who should live (cf. Broome, 1991). By flipping a coin, you ensure that an indivisible good -- continuing one's life -- is distributed as fairly as is possible without wasting it. (shrink)

Law has been a close partner to sociology from its very beginning, and the partnership often has proven to be extremely prolific for sociology. Grand theories as well as vital conceptual tools can be counted among its offspring. Both disciplines share the common ground of socio-legal studies, which has developed into a nearly independent interdisciplinary enterprise where legal scholars and sociologists happily meander between the normative and the analytical. From the vast array of topics in the field of socio-legal studies (...) I select the sociology of criminal justice and punishment in order to demonstrate the characteristics of this relationship. The partnership between sociology and law emerged as part of the modernization project in the 19th and 20th centuries, and the sociology of punishment was part of this endeavour. Rooted in a strong tradition of old (Durkheim) and new (Elias, Foucault) classics, recent developments in this field are leaving the idea of an `unproblematically modern punishment' (Whitman, 2005a) behind, and new fields of inquiry for comparative lawyers and sociologists are opening up. Although artificial intelligence has been given an unprecedented amount of attention in both the public and academic domains in the last few years, its convergence with other transformative technologies like cloud computing, robotics, and augmented/virtual reality is predicted to exacerbate its impacts on society. The adoption and integration of these technologies within industry and manufacturing spaces is a fundamental part of what is called Industry 4.0, or the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The impacts of this paradigm shift on the human operators (...) who continue to work alongside and symbiotically with these technologies in the industry bring with it novel ethical issues. Therefore, how to design these technologies for human values becomes the critical area of intervention. This paper takes up the case study of robotic AI-based assistance systems to explore the potential value implications that emerge due to current design practices and use. The design methodology known as Value Sensitive Design (VSD) is proposed as a sufficient starting point for designing these technologies for human values to address these issues. (shrink)

Hobbes's political theory has traditionally been taken to be an endorsement of state power and a prescription for unconditional obedience to the sovereign's will. In this book, Susanne Sreedhar develops a novel interpretation of Hobbes's theory of political obligation and explores important cases where Hobbes claims that subjects have a right to disobey and resist state power, even when their lives are not directly threatened. Der Kolner Dominikaner Gerhard von Sterngassen verfasste im ersten Viertel des 14. Jahrhunderts einen Laster- und Tugendtraktat, der unter zwei metaphorischen Titeln "Medela languentis animae" bzw. "Pratum animarum" in zwei unterschiedlich umfangreichen Redaktionen uberliefert ist. Trotz der wiederholten Erwahnung des Werkes im Zusammenhang der Deutschen Thomistenschule bzw. der Rheinischen Dominikanerschule fehlte bislang eine umfassende Untersuchung und Edition. Den zentralen Inhalt des Buches von Susanne Kaup bilden die text- und quellenkritische Edition sowie die theologische Interpretation der Lehre von den Gluckseligkeiten (...) (beatitudines) der Bergpredigt einer Thematik, deren mittelalterliche Rezeptionsgeschichte bisher wenig Aufmerksamkeit erfuhr und die die haufig in der Forschung diskutierte philosophische Lehre vom Gluck aus theologischer Perspektive erganzt. In der Zitation von Autoren der Patristik bis hin zu Thomas von Aquin werden systematische Texte und narrative Exempla der Wustenvatertheologie miteinander verbunden. Gerhard von Sterngassen verfasste ein theologisch-spirituelles, heils-padagogisches Werk fur die Privatfrommigkeit; durch die umfangreiche Benutzung des Thomas von Aquin leistete er einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Breitenwirkung dieses Gedankengutes. Die Dissertation wurde im Juni 2010 mit dem Promotionsforderpreis der Munchener Universitatsgesellschaft ausgezeichnet.". (shrink)
