This paper examines the relationship between the critique of civilization, anti-imperialism, gender and representative government in the political thought of the neglected communist, environmentalist, and gay liberationist Edward Carpenter (1844–1929). In recent years, there has been a dramatic growth in the historical literatures on anti-imperialism and representative government, yet these two topics are rarely connected. Meanwhile, a voluminous literature on the concept of civilization and its role in British imperialism has largely ignored its role in justifying social and political domination (...) in Britain itself. Carpenter's writings on these topics are important because he offers a defense of the value of representative government that is grounded in his anti-imperialism. Furthermore, his critique of civilization led him to connect problems of social domination in India to the struggles of women, homosexuals, and the working class. These groups ought in turn to be enfranchised and given roles in the functioning of the state. (shrink)

Strong between- and within-animal differences during spatial activities lead us to claim that a given animal is directly sensitive to a given substructure of the global array. This vicarious subset is not cut out by the senses but by redundancies emerging from physical properties. We argue that the subset is not a single ambient array, or a combination of single ambient arrays, but a complex holistic part of the global array.

El presente artículo tiene por objetivo explorar las implicancias de la agencia no humana como mecanismo de interacción ludonarrativa en el videojuego Stray (2022), buscando esclarecer las relaciones de cooperación interespecie que en este se representan. El análisis se enfoca en determinar las dinámicas de cruce y vínculo que se fraguan entre entidades orgánicas e inorgánicas, estableciendo parentescos zootécnicos que cuestionan los preceptos conceptuales del posthumanismo crítico en contextos especulativos cyberpunk y ahumanos. Por último, interesa igualmente indagar respecto a las (...) potenciales consecuencias que este tipo de interacciones puede tener en el videojugador y su propia caracterización agéntica. (shrink)

Democracy in Spite of the Demos challenges democratic authority when the people are no longer able to make good decisions in an economic environment generating systemic social delusion. However, the solution offered to overcome the stalemate remains precarious, and the tension between democracy and emancipation is addressed with wrong conceptual tools. This calls for a reflection on the conditions for a democratically legitimate refoundation of democracy, bridging the gap between critical and democratic theory.

RésuméLa situation actuelle de la recherche scientifique, plus particulièrenient en physique atomique, conduit à une altération de la forme traditionnelle de l'esprit scientifique. Nous en voyons les causes essentielles dans la liaison toujours plus étroite entre science et technique, interdépendance qui a pour conséquence, d'une part, une intervention accrue de l'état et des grandes organisations financières dans les domaines de base et, d'autre part, une industrialisation toujours plus marquée de I'activité scientifique fondamentale. Il en résulte une limitation de la liberté (...) de recherche et d'information et souvent de la part du physicien une mégalomanie contestable.Du point de vue sociologique, les applications industrielles de 1'énergie atomique posent le problkme dramatique du but a atteindre, qui est le maintien de la société civilisée, et des conséquences éventuellement fatales pour le genre humain des moyens mis en Ceuvre pour réaliser ce but.Les questions fondamentales et urgentes posées par les tendances et implications de la recherche atomique ne pourront trouver de solutions valables que par un dialogue toujours plus vivant entre science et philosophie.
