Julie Taymor is an exemplary artist who has successfully made the transition from avant-garde director of live theatre in the 1980s to become a Broadway director for Disney Corporation with The Lion King, and, more recently, a film director with Sony’s nostalgic look at the music of the Beatles in Across the Universe. Highlights of her career—spanning the latter half of the twentieth century—offer excellent examples of the changes in the economics of creativity and artistic labor for a case study (...) in cultural and aesthetic values under global capitalism. Through interviews, newspapers and financial annual reports, specific moments in Taymor’s oeuvre reveal key distinctions between cultural and intercultural values, between aesthetic and financial exchange values, and highlight themes and limitations in the legacy of the Marxist labor theory of value. Hoffnung ist nicht primär ein Zukunftssinn, sondern unser Sinn für die Möglichkeit des Guten. Diese Studie analysiert das facettenreiche Phänomen des Hoffens aus den unterschiedlichen Theorieperspektiven der europäischen Denkgeschichte, um die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen des Hoffens kritisch zu erkunden und haltbare von fragwürdigen Formen des Hoffens zu unterscheiden. Argumente gegen das Hoffen werden ebenso diskutiert wie Argumente für das Hoffen. Es werden die Auffassungen des Hoffens als Tugend, als Passion, als Streben nach Glückseligkeit untersucht (Plato, Aristoteles, Thomas von Aquin, Descartes, (...) Hobbes, Hume, Spinoza, Leibniz, Wolf). Es wird die Frage nach dem Recht der Hoffnung diskutiert (Kant) und der Versuch Kierkegaards analysiert, Hoffen als Modus der Liebe zu bestimmen. Es wird der philosophische Versuch rekonstruiert, Hoffnung als Prinzip zu denken (Ernst Bloch), und sein theologisches Pendant, eine Theologie der Hoffnung zu entwickeln (Jürgen Moltmann). Die These ist, dass Hoffen ein Grundphänomen des menschlichen Lebens ist, bei dem es nicht primär um die Zukunft geht, sondern das am besten als Sinn für die Möglichkeit des Guten verstanden werden kann. This book studies the history of intercultural human rights. It examines the foundational elements of human rights in the East and the West and provides a comparative analysis of the independent streams of thought originating from the two different geographic spaces. It traces the genesis of the idea of human rights back to ancient Indian and Greco-Roman texts, especially concepts such as the Rigvedic universal moral law, the Upanishadic narratives, the Romans' model of governance, the rule of law, and administration (...) of justice. It also looks at Cicero's concept of rights and duties which focuses on quality of compassion and fair play, and Seneca's expositions on mercy, empathy, justice and checks on the arbitrary exercise of power. An important contribution, this book fills a significant gap in the study of human rights. In 2021, a previously unknown treatise by Porphyry of Tyre, which has been preserved in a Syriac translation, was made available to historians of philosophy: Porphyry, On Principles and Matter (De Gruyter, 2021). This text not only enlarges our knowledge of the legacy of the most prominent disciple of Plotinus but also serves as an important witness to Platonist discussions of first principles and of Plato's concept of prime matter in the Timaeus. The aim of the present volume of collected (...) studies is two-fold. On the one hand, it brings up an update to the state of the art of our knowledge of Porphyry's philosophy and of his role in the transmission of the earlier philosophical materials, especially those of the Middle Platonic works. On the other hand, it focuses on the questions of the reception of Porphyry's legacy, both by Greek and Latin Platonists (with special interest in Calcidius) and by Christian Oriental authors (with particular focus on the Syriac tradition). The primary audience of the book will be scholars and graduate students in ancient and late ancient Greek philosophy, Orientalists and scholars interested in the Christian reception of Greek philosophy, in the studies of the Christian Orient, as well as in Greek, Latin, and Syriac philology.
