Helmut Fleischer has distinguished three different approaches to history in the development of Marx's thinking: the "anthropological" , the "pragmatological" , and the "nomological" . However, these represent a less continuous and coherent development than Fleischer claims. The 1857 Introduction to the Grundrisse can be instanced as a fourth view, more focused than the others on historiography, and at variance with what Marx says elsewhere. Dit artikel tracht de grondslagen te leggen voor een aannemelijke theorie van organisatie. Het zet uiteen, dat het vermogen van iedere bevolkingsgroep, de hulpmiddelen effectief aan te wenden, in de eerste plaats afhankelijk is van de voorschriften en regelingen, die zij aanneemt voor de contrôle van haar natuurlijke hulpbronnen en productiemiddelen en de distributie van inkomen. Deze regels en voorschriften vormen tezamen hetgeen een georganiseerd proces wordt genoemd. De voornaamste stelling van het artikel is deze, dat een organisatie een groeiend (...) model is van relaties tusschen volken en de materialen in hun omgeving. Er zijn bepaalde relatie-beginselen, die een organisatie tot een levend geheel, haar endogenetisch, maken, d.w.z. haar uit zichzelf de energie doen voortbrengen om haar eigen levensprocessen te onderhouden. Een schending van deze principes -- zoo zet de schrijver uiteen -- veroorzaakt een vermindering van de levensvatbaarheid der organisatie, zoodat de energie, die noodig is om haar geraamte bijeen te houden van buiten-af moet worden aangevuld, d.w.z. uitwendig moet zijn ten opzichte van haar eigen activiteiten. Het schema van zulk een organisatie wordt exogenetisch genoemd. Een aantal voorbeelden wordt gegeven, om deze stelling te ondersteunen en de principes worden met een aantal gevallen geïllustreerd. De stelling toont aan, dat het sociale organisme de tendentie heeft exogenetisch te worden, wanneer het er niet in slaagt, de eischen van den mensch behoorlijk met die van zijn technologie in overeenstemming te brengen. De basis van deze verhouding, zoo toont de schrijver aan, ligt in drie integratiepunten, namelijk: 1. Het punt, waarin de relaties van individuen en groepen tot de natuurlijke hulpbronnen zijn bepaald. 2. Het punt, waarin de relaties van individuen en groepen tot de productiemiddelen zijn bepaald. 3. Het punt, waarin de betrekkelijke rechten van kapitaal en arbeid ten opzichte van de geproduceerde goederen zijn bepaald. En este texto el A. se propone mostrar que es posible emplear algunas técnicas de la lógica modal para reflexionar en torno al problema de la existencia de Dios. En la primera parte se presenta la estructura general de la lógica modal,su simbología y los diversos sistemas que recientemente han sido propuestos. En la segunda parte, el A. sugiere la posibilidad de formular en términos modales la prueba ontológica de San Anselmo. El texto culmina extrayendo algunas consecuencias de esta formulación.

Presently, there are two views of human history vying for our allegiance. The one is grounded in the Enlightenment and insists that history is a closed process whose course is determined by the dictum that “might makes right.” The other view is that of supernaturalism, which regards every event in history as a direct act of God. Challenging both of these views is the prophetic construal of history. By exploring the possibility of self-development in African female protagonists, this engrossing work augments existing feminist critiques that have analyzed the possibilities and potentials for the individuation of mostly Western, mostly European female characters. Animals search for food and shelter by locomotion through time and space. The elemental step is the action-perception cycle, which has three steps. In the first step a volley of action potentials initiated by an act of search triggers the formation of a macroscopic wave packet that constitutes the memory of the stimulus. The wave packet is filtered and sent to the entorhinal cortex, where it is combined with wave packets from all sensory systems. This triggers the second step forming (...) a unified memory that is passed through the hippocampal formation where it is assigned a place in the life-long memory of the subject. In the third step the output of the entorhinal cortex triggers the formation of a global wave packet that synchronizes the oscillatory activity of most of not all of the cerebral cortex. This shared oscillation caries a pattern of amplitude modulation, that can be observed non-invasively from the scalp EEG of human volunteers perceiving the stimulus and correlated with the stimulus. The same dendritic electric currents that drive the output of the brains of the wave packet drive the observed EEG signs. Therefore I postulate that the global wave packet, the third step in the cycle requiring only 0.2 seconds expresses the memory of the global accommodation that initiates the next action-perception cycle. Some unspecified fraction of the AM pattern is available to me the observer, and some other unspecified fraction of the total activity in the subject who is expected to respond to the stimulus. There is reason to hope that these fractions will coincide often enough to support refinements in techniques for extending these correlates of consciousness. Although Gadamer's study of Greek paideia has been virtually ignored in the scholarly literature, I argue that it is central to his philosophy of education. Gadamer singles out three kinds of paideia: traditional, sophistic and philosophic. Traditional paideia, grounded in an unaware habit or disposition of the soul, was vulnerable when sophistic paideia brought reasoned argument against it. This 'new' paideia originally supported traditional notions of the just and the good with its conscious art of argumentation and pragmatic enhancement of (...) success. But this paideia also undermined conventional morality by arguing that it is only convention, thereby corrupting the youth of Athens by appealing to the untrammeled desire for power. Philosophical paideia takes its bearings from the sophistic as its deepest opponent and counterimage. It turns out, however, that the two are virtually indistinguishable. Both bring thinking to consciousness; both are rhetorical arts; both create confusion; and both are subject to the 'weakness of the logoi.' In the end, the difference between them rests not on distinctions of reason, but the intent of the reasoner. This conflict of paideias is relevant to the situation of education today. Problems of narrow technical perspective and the broadest ideological manipulation are directly traceable to sophistic paideia. Thus, Gadamer points to hermeneutical praxis as 'the heart of all education that wants to teach how to philosophize.'. (shrink)

The author defends the anti-representationalist claim that the formation of the proper names (and as a consequence – scientific terms or notions) cannot happen through certain ostensive pointing at some objects given here and now (like in B. Russell’s theory) or through perceptions which are generalized inductively or by means of Kantian apperception or Anschauung. In order to answer the question about the concepts formation we have to take into account the historical and socio-cultural background of the genesis of proper (...) names which form the foundation and boundary of all classifications including the scientific ones. The author claims that there is an important difference between a personal belief or propositional knowledge and some implicit or background knowledge of the language community in its historical development. The first one could be evaluated on its truth / falseness. The second one however – being the foundation for the first one – cannot be evaluated in this manner. It simply is as it is. (shrink)

I describe a constructive foundation for quantum mechanics, based on the discreteness of the degrees of freedom of quantum objects and on the Principle of Relativity. Taking Einstein’s historical construction of Special Relativity as a model, the construction is carried out in close contact with a simple quantum mechanical Gedanken experiment. This leads to the standard axioms of quantum mechanics. The quantum mechanical description is identified as a mathematical tool that allows describing objects, whose degree of freedom in space–time has (...) a discrete spectrum, relative to classical observers in space–time. This description is covariant with respect to coordinate transformations and meets the requirement that the spectrum is the same in every inertial system. The construction gives detailed answers to controversial questions, such as the measurement problem, the informational content of the wave function, and the completeness of quantum mechanics. (shrink)
