Although traditionally, nursing research has paid little attention to geographical approaches, recent years have witnessed some initial research interest in the dynamic between nursing, space and place. Such research potentially represents the foundations of what may be termed a ‘geography of nursing’. Although, to date, some novel and valuable perspectives have been gained into the spatial features of nursing, no consideration has been given to the theoretical development of, and basis for, a geography of nursing. Furthermore, no consideration has been (...) given to philosophical heritage; the treatment of space and place in human geography and the insights that this may provide for the new field of research. In this context, this paper provides an historical review of geographical research and traces the evolution of how space and place have been conceptualized and operationalized by it. The paper outlines the emergence of a health geography subdiscipline and its own changing and diverse perspectives. In the final section, the central themes of the current geography of nursing are considered and, reflecting back on the theoretical concerns of contemporary human geography, the paper outlines some philosophies and theories on which future geography of nursing could be based. From a disciplinary perspective, one potential role of the geography of nursing is argued to be the maintenance of the relationship between health geography and mainstream health service and medical concerns, but in a place‐sensitive, patient‐sensitive and qualitative form. The constructing principles of ancient cartography were for most of the time non-mimetic and non-empirical, so that the maps build on their basis had a most fantastic shape. We could safely call this kind of non-realistic geography – symbolic geography. In this paper, I focus on the psychological projections that shaped the form of pre-modern maps. The main epistemological instrument for such an approach is offered by Freudian psychoanalysis and Jungian analytical psychology. In ”psychoanalytical geography”, Freudian schemes of interpretation (the (...) oral, anal and genital stages of evolution) are put to work for explaining the complex mechanisms of identification and transference at work in ancient cartography. Chacune se confronte au caractère abstrait des espaces produits par les processus de planification capitaliste contemporains ; mais chacune se détourne dans le même temps vers « une myriade de trajectoires humains qui se déroulent au niveau du (...) sol ». Elles y découvrent la production d’un milieu existentiel vécu et façonné par ses habitants, un espace vital ouvert aux devenirs les plus inattendus, et en même temps intérieurement contradictoire de par sa multiplicité même. C’est ce que Lefebvre appelait « l’espace différentiel ». Mais entre l’époque de Lefebvre et la nôtre, il y a eu une floraison d’enquêtes féministes et d’historiographies postcoloniales, qui ont prêté une attention particulière aux interactions entre la positionnalité des sujets et les savoirs situés (y compris les savoirs d’expression). This paper is underpinned by an epistemological question: What are the types and ways of knowing that can be entailed in reflective leadership in its fullest sense? The question is explored through a mapping exercise which outlines a geography of reflective leadership in terms of three variables: type of knowledge, problem focus, and mode of learning (incorporating the notion of embodied learning). Particular attention is given to recognising within the terrain of reflective leadership the epistemic credentials of spiritual learning and (...) experiential awareness of spirituality. Is a truly human science of geography possible? What notions of spatiality adequately describe human spatial experience and behaviour? The perspectives examined in the book reveal and resist certain power relations that have constituted geographical knowledge. The book has two main aims.

Two years ago the publication of the monograph The Geography of Scientific Collaboration the authors discuss what issues would have been addressed if the book was written today. Three interrelated matters come up front. The first is the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on scientific collaboration in both positive and negative ways, also from the geographic perspective. The second is the rise of the virtual conferences with various benefits and challenges they bring, including their inclusively and environmental impacts. Examines recent changes and future developments in human geography.

Within the modern Western lifestyle increasing conflict is becoming apparent between that patchwork of isolated points such as the home or the office, which are linked by a mechanical system of transportation and communication devices, and a growing sense of homelessness and isolation. This work, first published in 1979, adopts a phenomenological perspective illustrating that this malaise may have partial roots in the deepening rupture between people and place. Whereas the problems of terrestrial space may have been overcome technologically and (...) economically, it has been less successful regarding people. Experience indicates that people become bound to locality, and the quality of their life is thus reduced if these bonds are disrupted or broken in any way. The relationship between community and place is investigated, as is the opportunity for improving the environment, both from a human and an ecological perspective.
