Cet article vise à décrire les rapports dialectiques entre l’idéologie et l’utopie dans la philosophie sociale de Paul Ricœur et à les interroger sous l’angle de la critique. L’article montre le rôle de la critique dans le cadre de la philosophie ricœurienne et décrit la présence de plusieurs types, fonctions et objets de la critique dans cette philosophie, en soulignant l’importance, dans le contexte de ses rapports avec la théorie critique, de la critique généalogique, normative (...) et reconstructive. Rappelant que les formes pathologiques d’idéologie et d’utopie doivent être critiquées, mais aussi que les idéologies et les utopies, au sens positif, peuvent aussi être des outils critiques, l’article vise à cerner certains problèmes non résolus de l’approche ricœurienne à cette question mais aussi à montrer que la fonction critique de la philosophie ricœurienne a beaucoup à nous apprendre encore aujourd’hui. Dans L’idéologie et l’utopie, Ricœur repense le rapport, hérité de Mannheim, entre ces deux concepts. L’objectif de notre contribution est de montrer que le concept d’utopie procède d’une reconstruction de la philosophie de l’imagination chez Ricœur dont la méthode est parente de la phénoménologie. Notre argumentation s’articule en trois temps. Dans un premier temps, notre attention se concentre sur la convergence entre Mannheim et Ricœur: l’attitude déviante par rapport à la réalité que génère l’utopie comme neutralisation, (...) au sens phénoménologique du terme. Dans un second temps, nous insisterons sur la critique que Ricœur adresse à la sociologie de Mannheim qui privilégie la réalité au détriment de la fiction, au risque de faire disparaitre l’utopie. Enfin, sur fond de cette divergence, nous chercherons à montrer l’importance, chez Ricœur, d’une phénoménologie génétique pour repenser la place constituante de l’imagination productrice dans l’espace social. L'importance de l'herméneutique pour Ricoeur nous a fait sous estimer le rôle de la phénoménologie dans sa pensée. Une lecture attentive de son œuvre montre qu'au contraire, lorsqu'il s'agit de l'imagination, Ricoeur défend une perspective proprement phénoménologique. Celle-ci, esquissée par Ricoeur dans sa traduction française des Idem I, met en avant la capacité de neutralisation de l'imagination et se révèlera indispensable à sa philosophie de la volonté des années 1950-1960. Mais c'est dans les années 1970 que Ricoeur va développer (...) une ontologie sociale, que Luz Ascarate met en dialogue avec la nouvelle génération de la Théorie critique, autour du concept d'utopie. Cette ontologie est fondée sur une phénoménologie de l'imagination approfondie dans des textes encore inédits. Dans ces textes, Ricoeur montre que l'imagination est d'autant plus chargée d'implications ontologiques qu'elle est neutralisante et éloignée de la réalité empirique. RESUME L’hypothèse que tente d’esquisser cet article est que l’idée ricœurienne d’une médiatisation dynamique des contradictions de l’imaginaire social présuppose une corrélation originaire de l’idéologie et de l’utopie qui ne peut elle-même être comprise qu’à partir de l’événement de l’institution d’un imaginaire social constituant. Dans un premier temps, l’article s’efforce de cerner ce qui fait la spécificité de la théorie ricœurienne de l’idéologie et de l’utopie comme « pratiques imaginatives », en soulignant à ce titre l’influence déterminante (...) des thèses de Jacques Ellul sur l’idéologie. Axel Honneth, célèbre théoricien allemand de la reconnaissance qui s’inscrit dans la filiation de l’École de Francfort et notamment de Jürgen Habermas, et Jacques Rancière, éminent penseur français de la mésentente qui a rompu avec la tradition althussérienne, sont deux figures centrales du paysage intellectuel contemporain. Leurs pensées se situent dans deux traditions distinctes, mais elles ont toutes deux à voir avec le marxisme pris au sens large, qu’elles considèrent sous un angle critique. Les deux penseurs portent intérêt à des (...) domaines spécifiques au sein de la philosophie et hors d’elle. S’ils partagent tous deux un souci du domaine politique, Axel Honneth se meut dans la philosophie sociale, la philosophie morale et la philosophie du droit ; il fait un usage important et réfléchi des sciences sociales. Jacques Rancière se tourne, pour sa part, vers l’histoire, l’esthétique et la littérature. Mais une confrontation entre leurs deux pensées paraît s’imposer, tant leurs modèles sont influents dans le champ des sciences sociales, de la théorie politique et de la philosophie critique aujourd’hui. Il s’agit de savoir si les paradigmes qu’ils mettent en avant pour critiquer la société, pour rendre raison de son évolution et des transformations qui doivent la rendre plus juste ou plus libre, le paradigme de la reconnaissance et celui de la mésentente, sont concurrents, s’ils sont exclusifs l’un de l’autre, ou s’ils sont compatibles. Constructing a dialogue between the social theory of Alain Touraine and the philosophy of Paul Ricoeur, this work locates the wellsprings of the renewed intepretative powers of Touraine's recent sociology of the subject and critique of modernity in an implicit and unfinished, but unmistakable 'hermeneutical turn'.

Que. ce soit pour un scénario clinique ou chirurgical, l’acceptation de prendre une pilule ou de se rendre à une consultation est. essentielle au succès du traitement médical. La “décennie du cerveau” a fourni aux praticiens des données neuroscientifiques substantielles sur le comportement humain, a aidé à expliquer pourquoi les gens font ce qu’ils font et a créé le concept de “cerveau motivé”. Les résultats de la psychologie empirique ont stratifié (...) la motivation en étapes de changement, qui sont devenues plus complexes au fil des décennies. Cette recherche vise à améliorer la compréhension de la façon dont les gens prennent des décisions concernant leur santé et comment mieux comprendre les stratégies et les techniques pour les aider à résoudre les problèmes d’ambivalence de manière efficace et ciblée.MéthodesNous établissons un dialogue avec la phénoménologie de la volonté de Ricoeur afin de comprendre le sens de ces découvertes scientifiques. À partir de la phénoménologie husserlienne, Paul Ricoeur a développé sa pensée en s’éloignant de l’idéalisme transcendantal en émancipant les structures intentionnelles de la volonté du domaine de la perception. Résultats: En introduisant les concepts de volontaire et d’involontaire, Ricoeur s’est. écarté du dualisme cartésien, qui fait du corps un corps d’objet, cible de vicissitudes naturelles. Le nouveau dualisme entre volontaire et involontaire est. traité par référence à ce que Ricoeur a appelé le mystère central de l’existence incarnée, qui considère l’homme “double dans l’humanité, simple dans lavitalité”. Cette dualité permet de considérer le cerveau comme l’organe naturel du comportement dans le corps humain et d’utiliser la psychologie empirique comme moyen d’échapper aux subjectivations superficielles des concepts.ConclusionLa simplicité (ou unité) d’existence invite la médecine à repenser certaines de ses hypothèses philosophiques, de telle sorte que les patients puissent être considérés comme des sujets autonomes avec des projets de vie d’auteur. L’anthropologie ricourienne a un impact éthique profond sur la manière dont la médecine devrait utiliser la technologie, ce qui découle de résultats de psychologie empirique. L’utilisation de ces nouvelles connaissances doit également faire l’objet d’une inspection minutieuse, car elle modifie le rôle social de la science médicale. (shrink)

This paper elucidates the notion that action is creative through the social imaginaries perspective. Hans Joas’s critique of sociological theories on action developed in The Creativity of Action (1996 [1992]) argued that creativity is an essential concept to better understand social action. Cornelius Castoriadis and Paul Ricoeur employ an understanding of action as being inextricably connected to the social imaginary and capable of bringing forth historically novel forms of being and doing. An elucidation of Castoriadis’s dichotomy between the instituted and (...) instituting imaginaries and Ricoeur’s distinction of the ideological and utopian poles of the cultural imagination bring to the surface points of convergence and divergence in their respective understandings of the social imaginary and historical novelty. Inspired by Joas’s critique of sociological theories of action through pragmatism, which is underlined by a critique of the philosophical anthropological assumptions held by structuralism, this essay argues that Castoriadis’s and Ricoeur’s distinct insights on the creative dimension of social action and the way in which social reality emerges can elucidate further an anti-structuralist philosophical anthropology that can help inform sociological theories of action. The successive announcements concerning the “end” of ideology or its “return” fail to register the major shift in its use as a concept in social theory: its redefinition in a culturalist perspective. The article begins by recalling the Marxist definition of the concept, comprising three ideas: the distortion of reality, the legitimation of domination, and the loosening of ideological “hold” through its critique. The article then notes the gradual abandoning of the term, before looking at the terms which presided over (...) its culturalist redefinition. The article then examines the contours of a possible renewal of the critical concept paving the way for a renewed critique of ideology. Such a reconstruction is notably based on the theory of recognition. It locates in the idea of the loosening or undoing of ideological hold the thrust of an internal critique. (shrink)

Integrative social contracts theory (ISCT) uses empirical methods to develop guidelines for international business ethics. This article criticizes ISCT in terms of the way people actually think about contracts and agreements around the globe. Differences in orientations to communications context, moral reasoning, and institutional and structural conditions make the identification of authentic norms, hypernorms, and relevant communities problematic. The difficulties of the empirical methods suggest recourse to more traditional theoretical approaches for the identification of hypernorms as well as a stronger (...) test for the compatibility of authentic norms with hypernorms. Nous partirons du constat de la discrétion des thèmes de la ville et de la vie urbaine dans l’histoire de la Théorie critique : c’est un fait que, mises à part les analyses inspirées à Benjamin par sa lecture et son interprétation de l’œuvre de Baudelaire, il est très difficile de trouver une prise en compte explicite de la ville dans les écrits des principaux représentants de la Théorie critique de la société, toutes générations confondues, qu’il s’agisse de (...) Horkheimer et Adorno ou de Habermas et Honneth. Nous essaierons d’une part de comprendre les raisons de cette discrétion (pour ne pas dire plus) du thème de la ville dans la Théorie critique, et d’autre part de voir quels aménagements il faudrait faire subir à la Théorie critique pour qu’elle soit capable de mieux prendre en considération la ville : en particulier, éviter de dissoudre la dimension de la vie urbaine dans les domaines trop larges de la critique de la modernité, de la marchandise et du capitalisme. Nous verrons enfin dans quelle mesure les développements plus récents de la Théorie critique autour des thèmes de « l’accélération », de la « résonance » (chez Hartmut Rosa) ou de la « privation de monde » semblent prometteurs d’une meilleure prise en charge de la ville par la Théorie critique. The social exchange theory of reasoning, which is championed by Leda Cosmides and John Tooby, falls under the general rubric “evolutionary psychology” and asserts that human reasoning is governed by content-dependent, domain-specific, evolutionarily-derived algorithms. According to Cosmides and Tooby, the presumptive existence of what they call “cheater-detection” algorithms disconfirms the claim that we reason via general-purpose mechanisms or via inductively acquired principles. We contend that the Cosmides/Tooby arguments in favor of domain-specific algorithms or evolutionarily-derived mechanisms fail and that the notion (...) of a social exchange rule, which is central to their theory, is not correctly characterized. As a consequence, whether or not their conclusion is true cannot be established on the basis of the arguments they have presented. (shrink)

Over the last two decades, Axel Honneth has written extensively on the notion of social pathology, presenting it as a distinctive critical resource of Frankfurt School Critical Theory, in which tradition he places himself, and as an alternative to the mainstream liberal approaches in political philosophy. In this paper, I review the developments of Honneth's writing on this notion and offer an immanent critique, with a particular focus on his recent major work "Freedom's Right". Tracing the use of, and problems (...) internal to, Honneth's concept of social pathology serves to demonstrate his increasing reformism. It also serves to catalogue some of the dead ends that Critical Theory should avoid in taking up the idea of social pathology. The implication is not that this idea should be dropped. Rather, the paper is undertaking the necessary step of clearing the ground for further progress to take place on the question of what role the idea of social pathology can and should play in Critical Theory. The paper is critical in nature (and relentlessly so), but ultimately serves a constructive purpose. (shrink)

This paper provides a philosophical critique of social choice theory insofar as it deals with the normative evaluation of voting and voting rules. I will argue that the very method of evaluating voting rules in terms of whether they satisfy various conditions is deeply problematic because introducing strategic behaviour leads to a violation of any condition that makes a difference between voting rules. I also argue that it is legitimate to make interpersonal comparisons of utilities in voting theory. Combining a (...) realistic account of voters’ behaviour with a utilitarian evaluation of the outcomes then leads to the judgment that strategic voting is beneficial. If it is, then Arrow's theorem does not have far-reaching consequences for democracy because one of its conditions is not normatively acceptable. (shrink)

For more than three decades, Integrative Social Contracts Theory (ISCT) has been lauded as a business ethics theory particularly well suited to the international arena, especially because of its alleged ability to reconcile respect for cultural idiosyncrasies and normative teeth. However, this theory has also faced various objections, many of which its authors have responded to with varying degrees of satisfaction. As a contribution to this debate, this article provides a unifying rationale for many of those objections by exploring their (...) rooting in the Separation thesis. It submits that this fact negatively impacts the theory with three major challenges, namely: significant limitations to correctly frame moral issues and situations; poor identification of hypernorms; and insufficient theoretical grounding of hypernorms. This article critiques R. Keith Sawyer’s theory of social causation from his 2005 book Social Emergence. It considers his use of analogy with the philosophy of mind, his account of individual agency, the legacy of Emile Durkheim, the concepts of supervenience, multiple realization, and wild disjunction, and the role of history in social causation. Sawyer’s theory is also evaluated in terms of two examples of empirical research: his own micro-sociological studies into group creativity; and Margaret Archer’s macro-sociology of education systems.

Kasereka Kavwahirehi Cet essai cherche à montrer comment et pourquoi la philosophie africaine, telle qu’elle est élaborée à partir de 1970 après le rejet de l’ethnophilosophie, n’a pas développé un courant de philosophie sociale ou de théorie critique. Après les débats sur les méthodes et les conditions de possibilité d’une philosophie africaine rigoureuse, une nouvelle génération de philosophes africains a voulu remédier au théoricisme en faisant de la philosophie politique normative la voie royale. Au risque (...) de reconduire autrement ce à quoi elle voulait échapper, elle a aussi laissé en veilleuse la voie de l’analyse sociale de la société à sauver de la souffrance sociale. Ainsi, faute d’avoir développé des outils d’analyse appropriés, la philosophie africaine fait silencieusement face à la crise sociale qui frappe nombre de sociétés africaines où les inégalités sociales s’aggravent, où les revendications d’une vie bonne nourrissent des mouvements sociaux, et où l’humanitaire semble être la seule réponse à la souffrance sociale. Une complémentarité entre philosophie politique et philosophie sociale semble être le nouveau défi à relever pour ceux qui veulent contribuer à imaginer de nouvelles institutions sociales et économiques susceptibles de répondre aux aspirations des sociétés dans leur diversité. Si les oeuvres ont été abordées sous l'angle classique de l'analyse voire de la psychanalyse, et de la déconstruction, elles ont surtout été le point de départ (...) de discussions et réflexions philosophiques originales prenant appui sur une théorie des appareils - à distinguer des simples dispositifs et systèmes de communication - visant à appréhender les enjeux actuels de l'art et de la culture, innervés par une techno-science qui se voudrait porteuse d'espoir et d'utopie, quand elle se trouve bien souvent emportée dans des dérives commerciales, totalitaires et sectaires : l'individu, pris dans une temporalité vide, effrénée, et dépossédé d'une technique qu'il n'a pu intérioriser, se retrouve prolétarisé (Stiegler). Quelles seraient les alternatives à un tel phénomène? Comment, par l'expérience, matérialiser les immatériaux. La figure polymorphe - à la fois fantastique, imaginaire, sociale et politique - de l'extraterrestre (étranger, handicapé, hérétique, parasite, fou, génie, monstre, ange ou sauveur...) s'est progressivement imposée, nous conduisant à interroger les problématiques portant sur la différence et sur les différends qu'elle suscite, sur l'errance, la spectralité, l'événement et l'univers infini, l'archaïque et l'ultramoderne... Le rapport entre art et croyance, science et idéologie, foi et savoir (Derrida) s'est révélé déterminant dans notre réflexion, la pierre angulaire se situant dans la technique, potentiellement aliénante du fait des normes qu'elle met en jeu, ou au contraire émancipatrice, quand elle parvient à dépasser sa condition hylémorphique. This striking Lacanian contribution to discourse analysis is also a critique of contemporary psychological abstraction, as well as a reassessment of the radical opposition between psychology and psychoanalysis. This original introduction to Lacan's work bridges the gap between discourseanalytical debates in social psychology and the social-theoretical extensions of discourse theory. David Pavón Cuéllar provides a precise definition and a detailed explanation of key Lacanian concepts, and illustrates how they may be put to work on a concrete discourse, in this case (...) a fragment of an interview obtained by the author from the Mexican underground Popular Revolutionary Forces (EPR). Throughout the book, Lacanian concepts are compared to their counterparts in psychology. Such a comparison reveals insuperable incompatibilities between the two series of concepts. The author shows that Lacan's psychoanalytical terminology can neither be translated nor assimilated to the terms of current psychology. Among the notions in actual or potential competition with Lacanian concepts, the book deals with those proposed by semiology, Marxism, phenomenology, constructionism, deconstruction, and hermeneutics. Taking a stand on those theoretical positions, each chapter includes detailed discussion of the contribution of classical approaches to language; including Barthes, Bakhtin, Althusser, Politzer, Wittgenstein, Berger and Luckmann, Derrida, and Ricoeur. There is sustained reference in the body of the text to the arguments of Lacan and Lacanians, of Miller, Milner, Soler, and Zizek. At the same time, in the extensive notes accompanying the text, there is a systematic reappraisal and reinterpretation of debates and pieces of research work in social psychology, especially in a discursive and critical domain that has incorporated elements of psychoanalytic theory. This is a study in the philosophy of social science. It takes the form of a comparative critique of three contemporary approaches: ordinary language philosophy, hermeneutics and critical theory, represented here respectively by Ludwig Wittgenstein, Paul Ricoeur and Jürgen Habermas. Part I is devoted to an exposition of these authors' views and of the traditions to which they belong. Its unifying thread is their common concern with language, a concern which nonetheless reveals important differences of approach. For whereas ordinary language (...) philosophers tend to treat linguistic activity as the ultimate object of inquiry, both Ricoeur and Habermas regard it as a medium which betrays more fundamental dimensions of human experience and the social world. Part II complements the exposition with a critical analysis of its central themes: the conceptualisation of action, the methodology of interpretation, and the theory of reference and truth. The author defends many aspects of the work of Ricoeur and Habermas, such as the emphasis on power and ideology, the strategy of depth interpretation, and the link between consensus and truth; but he argues that there are serious deficiencies and obscurities in their work. He proposes solutions to these difficulties and concludes with a sketch of a critical and rationally justified theory for the interpretation of action - a critical hermeneutics. (shrink)

Ideology critique generally seeks to undermine selected theories and beliefs by demonstrating their partisan origins and their insidious social functions. This approach rightly reveals the socially implicated nature of much purported knowledge, but also brackets or bypasses its cognitive properties. In contrast, Michael Morris argues that it is possible to integrate the social and epistemic dimensions of belief in a way that preserves the cognitive and adjudicatory capacities of reason, while acknowledging that reason itself is inevitably social, historical, and interested. Les failles dans la théorie de la démocratie libérale ont été toujours localisées dans au moins deux sphères importantes : celle de la procédure et celle des résultatst. En ce qui concerne la première, le problème réside dans le fait que l’on tâche que «la volonté du peuple» – ou du moins celle du peuple pertinent, des électeurs éligibles – s’exprime à travers des mécanismes signifiants et pratiques. Suivant le consenus partagé jusqu’à récemment par la plupart des théoriciens orthodoxes (...) de la démocratie libérale, les élections à des cops représentatifs et les votes ultérieurs des gagnants de ces élections constituent de tels mécanismes. Or, on constate à tout bout de champ que différentes instances des pouvoirs élus agissent à l’encontre de l’opinion des groupements de personnes qui les ont élus. La théorie de la démocratie libérale dit que, tant que l’on respecte les procédures appropriées permettant l’expression majoritaire de la volonté du peuple quant à ceux qui le représenteront, les représentants sont légitimés à voter contre la volonté apparente du peuple. Or, c’est une pure condradiction pratique. En ce qui concerne la question des résultats, la théorie récente de la démocratie libérale s’est creusé là une fosse encore plus profonde en abandonnant le concept de bien commun, auquel souscrivaient du moins quelques-uns des théoriciens plus traditionnels. La théorie de la démocratie libérale a finalement renoncé à toute fonction critique à l’égard des résultats. Par contre, elle est obligée de ratifier tout résultat, quelque déplorable ou même tragique qu’il puisse être, tant qu’il soit le produit de l’ensemble habilité des procédures et des institutions admises. Or, la nouvelle orientation théorique devra s’attaquer à tous les éléments qui sont absents dans l’approche rawlsienne et dans les écrits de la plupart des disciples libéraux de Rawls : pouvoir, violence, domination, idéologie, décision, interprétation, expression politique, révolution, histoire, économie, biopolitique. On a désespérément besoin de nouveaux modèles opour la philosophie sociale et politique! (shrink)

Face aux défis lancés à la réflexion urbaine par les développements de la ville contemporaine, cet article tente de reprendre le concept de « droit à la ville » thématisé par Henri Lefebvre en le confrontant à certains des éléments les plus récents de la théorie critique et de la philosophie sociale d’Axel Honneth. Il s’agit ici de partir d’une analyse de ce que l’on pourrait appeler « les pathologies urbaines du social » pour montrer que le droit (...) à la ville, en tant qu’utopie assumée et nécessaire, peut constituer un horizon normatif légitime pour repenser la ville et répondre aux maladies contemporaines de l’urbain. The concept of "practices"--whether of representation, of political or scientific traditions, or of organizational culture--is central to social theory. In this book, Stephen Turner presents the first analysis and critique of the idea of practice as it has developed in the various theoretical traditions of the social sciences and the humanities. Understood broadly as a tacit understanding "shared" by a group, the concept of a practice has a fatal difficulty, Turner argues: there is no plausible mechanism by which a "practice" (...) is transmitted or reproduced. The historical uses of the concept, from Durkheim to Kripke's version of Wittgenstein, provide examples of the contortions that thinkers have been forced into by this problem, and show the ultimate implausibility of the idea. Turner's conclusion sketches a picture of what happens when we do without the notion of a shared practice, and how this bears on social theory and philosophy. It explains why social theory cannot get beyond the stage of constructing fuzzy analogies, and why the standard constructions of the contemporary philosophical problem of relativism depend upon this defective notion. This first book-length critique of practice theory is sure to stir discussion and controversy in a wide range of fields, from philosophy and science studies to sociology, anthropology, literary studies, and political and legal theory. Philosophy & Social Criticism, Volume 48, Issue 2, Page 184-208, February 2022. Being critical does not come easy, not even within Critical Theory. In this article I respond to criticism of my book from 2019, Capitalism, Alienation and Critique, arguing that contemporary Critical Theory has something to learn from the founding fathers. Firstly, for Adorno immanent critique has metaphysical implications beyond Honneth’s critique of bourgeois society as inconsistent in terms of its professed ideals. Secondly, immanent critique is not the same (...) as ideology critique, and when it comes to Horkheimer and Habermas, they conducted the latter rather than the former. Thirdly, even though today nature must be our concern, answers are to be found in politics and metaphysics rather than science. Finally, critique of neoliberalism should be conducted as critique of political economy, that is, ideology critique, rather than sociological descriptions of the empirical details of globalized capitalism. Denaturalizing economics is a condition for economic democracy. (shrink)

Social Theory and the Political Imaginary: Practice, Critique and History is an innovative work of synthesis, critique, and analysis. It presages a social theory perspective that recognises the constitutive significance of the political imaginary in modernity. Social theory's current dilemmas are explored through a series of interlinked asssessments of some of its recent substantial strands, specifically, Luc Boltanski's pragmatism and the wider 'practical turn', the perspectives of multiple modernities and global modernity, the outlook of social and political imaginaries, and critical (...) social theory. The political imaginary's reconfigurations are evident in the tensions of global modernity and original social theory interpretations are advanced of landmark instances of twenty-first century social contestation: the Hong Kong protests conditioned by threats to civil freedoms and a lack of self-determination, the radical democratic practices of anti-austerity movements contesting capitalist globalisation's injustices, and the inverted cosmopolitanism of the 2005 French Riots challenging the oppression and inequalities experienced by immigrant communities and marginalised youth. These incisive applications of social theory and complementary conceptual innovations illuminate the vicissitudes of social struggles, political forms, and theoretical perspectives. Similarly, reflection on the political imaginary is found to enable a necessary rethinking of the interrelationship of practice, critique and history. (shrink)

This contribution investigates whether Hegel’s critique of social contract theory is still applicable to contemporary contract theory proposed by, e. g., Rawls and Nozick. At first sight, they seem to have overcome the problems identified by Hegel because Rawls and Nozick appropriate the social contract as something essentially rational and normative. I argue, however, that for Hegel, their appeal to rational argumentation is not compatible with the concreteness of human individuals. A revised reading of the master/ bondsman-relation, emphasizing the role (...) of the “fear of death”, shows the limited scope of contemporary contract theory. (shrink)

Holbach's famous materialistic and atheistic philosophy is less known for its political dimension. Yet the author proposed an original theory of the social contract in his works of the 1770s. This article details the main features of his political thought and of his social contract, notably his proposal of an 'Ethocracy' grounded in utility and justice. This Ethocracy paves the way for a pluralist republicanism that has original features in the history of ideas. Holbach was a reader of Hobbes and (...) Locke and an acquaintance of Rousseau, and proposed various critiques of the political writings of these authors. Through five main critiques, this article further shows the value of Holbach's positive theory on key concepts such as the state of nature, sociability, property, the general will and equality. Lastly, Holbach's potential contribution to political theory is highlighted, showing how the largely forgotten author merits our attention today. (shrink)

In this polemical intervention within the field of French and European social theory, Franck Fischbach proposes to revive and radicalise the tradition of social philosophy. The latter is understood, following Axel Honneth, in terms of the normatively-driven analysis of socio-economic processes that may be characterised as pathologies of the social. Fischbach contrasts the lessons of social philosophy from Rousseau to the Frankfurt School with the recent ascendance to intellectual hegemony of a formalistic, procedural liberalism which is oblivious to social negativity. (...) The review questions the capacity of social philosophy to synthesise stances as politically and methodologically different as those of de Maistre, Nietzsche and Marx, as well as the very pertinence of the appellation ‘philosophy’. Fischbach’s more historically determinate definition of social philosophy as arising out of the critique of Jacobin revolutionary political thought, with its supposed abstraction and voluntarism, fails to contend with the claims of ruptural politics, as well as with those positions that would regard crisis and pathology not just as a menace, but also as an opportunity for liberation. In the end, in spite of its able historical and conceptual mapping, and its commendable demand for totalising critique, Fischbach fails to persuade in his claim that social philosophy is the name for emancipatory thought in the present. Axel Honneth's Critique of Power is a rich interpretation of the history of critical theory, which clarifies its central problems and emphasizes the "social" factors that should provide that theory with a normative and practical orientation.Honneth focuses on the dialog between French and German social theory that was beginning at the time of Michel Foucault's death. It traces the common roots of the work of Foucault and Jürgen Habermas to a basic text of the last generation of critical theorists - (...) Max Horkheimer and Theodor Adorno's Dialectic of Enlightenment - and draws from this connection the outline of a program that might unite and surpass their seemingly irreconcilable methods of critiquing power structures. In doing so, Honneth provides a constructive and nonpolemical framework for comparisons between the two theorists. And he presents a novel interpretation of Foucault's analysis of social systems.Honneth traces the internal contradictions in critical theory through an analysis of Horkheimer's early programmatic writings, the Dialectic of Enlightenment, and Adorno's later social-theoretical writings. He shows how Habermas and Foucault in their distinctive ways reinserted the social world into critical theory but argues that neither operation has been wholly successful. His cogent analysis redirects critical social theory in ways that can draw on the strengths and avoid the weaknesses of the two approaches.Axel Honneth is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Konstanz. This article argues that a relatively novel methodology called multi-agent artificial intelligence modeling can play an important role in helping scholars fulfill eight desiderata for a “good” social scientific theory (conceptual clarity, logical consistency, empirical groundedness, parsimony, generativity, testability, insightfulness, and usefulness). The unique contributions of this methodology include its use of psychologically realistic agents in sociologically realistic networks that interact with each other and their simulated environment within an “artificial society.” These simulation tools utilize artificial intelligence in a way (...) that enables scholars to causally generate the emergence of macro-level societal phenomena of interest from the micro-level behaviors and meso-level interactions of simulated agents that represent real world populations. These social digital twins can also integrate multiple social theories within a single causal architecture, providing a unique opportunity for the revolutionizing of our best theoretical frameworks. Le présent article se propose de revenir sur l’apport de la psychanalyse à l’élaboration de la théorie sociale critique développée par Adorno et Horkheimer. Pour en éclairer la spécificité, il se consacre à l’étude de la théorie des besoins que ces auteurs élaborent dans les années 1940, qui vise à élucider comment il est possible de satisfaire socialement les besoins de tous sans reconduire la domination de la nature. L’article démontre la contribution de la psychanalyse au développement de (...) cette théorie, qui se constitue dans un dialogue avec les notions freudiennes d’autoconservation et d’étayage. Il entend détailler comment la théorie des besoins permet de mettre en lumière la façon dont cette théorie sociale critique met à l’épreuve la théorie freudienne des pulsions : le concept de besoin s’établit dans la théorie sociale par l’intermédiaire d’une confrontation avec la naturalité propre à la pulsion, et permet à la théorie sociale d’élaborer un concept de nature dans lequel nature interne et nature externe sont articulées et différenciées. In recent years, more and more philosophy scholars have been practicing what social sciences commonly refer to as “fieldwork”. However, what one may call “field philosophy” raises a number of specific issues. What is fieldwork in philosophy? Why should philosophers engage in fieldwork? How can they proceed both in theory and in practice? The present paper draws on the two-day conference that took place in Lyon in 2019 bringing together philosophy scholars and PhD students who conducted fieldwork in the domains (...) of health and ecology. Based on these discussions, we question the objects, forms, methods, and aims of this approach, while proposing some methodological milestones. As a method that is rooted in the philosophical tradition all the while being concerned with its ongoing topicality, field philosophy as we understand it contributes to enriching the philosophical discipline in its bibliographical and historian traditions, and to elucidating the relationship between philosophy and society. We believe that a community of inquiry is thus crucial in fostering methodological creativity and in continuing to elaborate on the aims and methods of this practice. (shrink)

Continental Philosophy of Social Science demonstrates the unique and autonomous nature of the continental approach to social science and contrasts it with the Anglo-American tradition. Yvonne Sherratt argues for the importance of an historical understanding of the Continental tradition in order to appreciate its individual, humanist character. Examining the key traditions of hermeneutic, genealogy, and critical theory, and the texts of major thinkers such as Gadamer, Ricoeur, Derrida, Nietzsche, Foucault, the Early Frankfurt School and Habermas, she also contextualizes contemporary developments (...) within strands of thought stemming back to Ancient Greece and Rome. Sherratt shows how these modes of thinking developed through medieval Christian thought into the Enlightenment and Romantic eras, before becoming mainstays of twentieth-century disciplines. Ricoeurs philosophische Entwicklung seit Beginn der siebziger Jahre dokumentiert sich nicht nur in seinen Monographien, sondern auch in einer Reihe von Aufsätzen, die bislang unübersetzt geblieben oder an entlegener Stelle in deutscher Sprache erschienen sind. Das Ziel des Bandes besteht darin, besonders prägnante Aufsätze zu den wichtigsten Themen zu präsentieren, mit denen sich Ricoeur in dieser Zeit auseinandergesetzt hat. Dazu zählen seine Überlegungen zu einer Hermeneutik des Textes, zur Theorie von Metapher und Erzählung, zum Verhältnis von Ideologie und Utopie, (...) zur Religionsphilosophie, zu einer Hermeneutik des Selbst, zur Ethik und Rechtsphilosophie sowie zum Verhältnis von Erinnerung und Vergessen. Auf diese Weise soll dem Leser die Gelegenheit geboten werden, sich einen Überblick über die Schwerpunkte von Ricoeurs philosophischer Arbeit der letzten drei Jahrzehnte zu verschaffen. Was die Auswahl der einzelnen Texte anbelangt, so orientiert sie sich zum einen am Gewicht der Themen im Zusammenhang des gesamten Werks, zum anderen aber auch daran, daß die Beiträge die Position des Autors auf besonders exemplarische Weise darstellen.Der Band wird abgerundet durch eine »Philosophische Autobiographie«, in der Ricoeur seinen Denkweg reflektiert. I pursue here a wish of Ricœur: to analyze ideology and utopia from a genetic phenomenology, in the sense of Husserl in the _Cartesian Meditations_, which “strives to dig under the surface of apparent meaning to the most fundamental meanings.” A single innovative interest guides my proposal between two contrasting phenomenologies of the imagination in Michel Henry and Paul Ricœur: to root, on the one hand, the dialectical mediation of ideology and utopia in the living immanence of the affective imagination (...) and, on the other hand, to inscribe the power of its expression as well as its power to act in the social and cultural field require to hold together the affective immanence of life, the figuration of the social reality and the socio-cultural and historical praxis. The psychoanalytical interpretation of the cultural imaginary to the bending of the affect and the language and the micro-history of the social practices of the representations serve here as “forks caudines,” under which the immanent phenomenology of the affective imagination is led to a hermeneutics of the imaginative practices of the discourse and the action. In Aesthetic Theory, Adorno argues that, in modernity, art and philosophy are reciprocally dependent upon each other for legitimation and critical force. This claim has puzzled scholars and provoked controversy. I argue that Adorno’s thesis may be comprehended in the following manner: art requires philosophy because, without the latter, art would lack the power to critique social and historical reality (in particular, the ideological elements that often remain invisible as second nature), and to rationally interpret the material particularity expressed by (...) such reality; and, conversely, philosophy requires art because the latter expresses historical experience to reason. Such material historical experience is necessary in order to prevent philosophy from falling into ideological convention; idle speculation; or abstract and reified instrumentality. Thus, the constellation of history, art, and philosophy is essential to Adorno’s aesthetics. (shrink)
