본고는 『천 개의 고원』의 서문인 「리좀」을 바탕으로 하여, 리좀을 이해하기 위한 핵심개념 중의 하나인 ‘미리우(milieu)’를 ‘리좀적 중도’이자 일종의 ‘철학적 중도’로 규명하는 것을 목적으로 한다.BR글의 구체적인 전개과정은 다음과 같다. 먼저, 텍스트에서 서양 전통 형이상학의 나무-뿌리 형태의 책에 대한 대안으로 제시되고 있는 리좀-수로 형태, ‘책-리좀’의 사유 체계를 검토한다. 다음으로, 리좀적 사유가 어떻게 ‘길’이 되고, 동양적 ‘도(Tao, 道)’와 만나 리좀적 중도가 되며 철학적 중도로 해석될 수 있는지를 밝힌다. 다른 한편으로, 본고는 리좀적 사유가 우리로 하여금 내재적 차이와 타자에 대한 이해를 보다 깊이 하도록 (...) 하며, 또한 공(空)한 다양체의 원리에 따른 실천적 삶의 수행을 돕는 방법으로서의 의의를 가짐을 조명한다. 이 연구는 동양의 중도의 사유를 현시대에 적합하게 풀어내어 철학적으로 실천하는 일에 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. L’auteur, responsable des aspects informatiques et linguistiques du projet « Manuscrits de Stendhal en ligne », décrit le processus de constitution d’un corpus, au sens linguistique du terme, dans le cadre d’une collaboration fortement interdisciplinaire. Il montre dans quelle mesure ce type de collaboration permet de construire un ensemble documentaire répondant aux besoins des chercheurs en littérature tout en apportant un matériau langagier riche et inédit pour le linguiste. Subséquemment, ce n’est pas l’objet de l’étude qui définit le corpus à (...) construire, mais à l’inverse, c’est le corpus construit qui limite et contraint les observations, remettant ainsi en question la notion d’analyse de corpus. Le concept d' Umwelt est souvent considéré comme l'équivalent allemand du concept français de « milieu ». En revenant sur l' apparition du concept scientifique d' Umwelt au début du XXe siècle, nous souhaitons mettre en évidence sa genèse polémique et le fait qu'il est, contre toute attente, le résultat d'un rejet du concept de milieu. Pour le géographe F. Ratzel et le biologiste J. von Uexküll, ce concept était en effet indissociable de la théorie de Taine. Beaucoup (...) trop déterministe à leurs yeux, elle renforçait le monisme matérialiste qui se développait alors en Allemagne et auquel ils souhaitaient mettre un terme. (shrink)

The impact of social factors upon the philosophical investigations in a broad sense is quite evident. Nevertheless their impact upon epistemology as a branch of philosophy, logic, and history of science as fields of research with noticeable philosophical content is not evident enough. We are keen to claim that this impact exists within some limits, although it is not so overtly evident. Moreover in the case of Marxism it is of a paradoxical nature. Marxism always puts the accent on the (...) role of social and economic factors in the development, development of science included. To a large extent due to Marxism, externalism emerged; the key idea of externalism may be expressed through the statement that social and economic reasons are the main sources of development of science. B.M. Hessen declared and did his best in 1931 to justify this statement through the example of the emergence of classical mechanics. Meanwhile the social milieu of Marxist countries placed a taboo on the externalist approach towards epistemology, the interpretation of logic, and history of science. All these fields of knowledge were evolved in the Marxist era in the USSR and Eastern Europe - despite the spirit of Marxism - within strict internalist boarders. Notre article reprend la distinction du milieu et de l’ambiance qu’avait étudiée en son temps Leo Spitzer. Il vise à accentuer la différence entre une conception objectiviste de l’environnement et une conception qui laisse place à la résonance affective de ce qui nous entoure. L’ambiance est un milieu rendu sensible par sa présence affective et influente. Pour ce faire, notre travail questionne le concept de « médiance » d’Augustin Berque qui prétend réformer le concept trop physicaliste et déterministe (...) de milieu et en montre néanmoins les limites, en plaidant pour une médialité ambiancielle qui se serait définitivement détachée des références à la structure sujet-objet et à l’idée d’un conditionnement psycho-physique du milieu. Vers 1935, après Être et temps, le concept de « milieu » ( Mitte ) apparaît de deux façons chez le philosophe allemand Martin Heidegger. Sur un plan horizontal, il se trouve, par-delà le « monde ambiant » ( Umwelt ), à l’intersection de l’homme et des dieux, où c’est le poète qui l’incarne à partir du langage ; selon une dimension verticale, il montre un « saut » ( Sprung ) à l’entre-deux du monde et de la terre. En nous appuyant notamment sur la pensée des Beiträge (1936-1940), nous comprenons alors le « milieu » ( Mitte ) comme le centre du Geviert (le Quadriparti) qui permet de localiser « l’être le là » ( Das Da-sein ), à « l’entre-deux » ( Das Zwischen ) du monde et de la terre, mais aussi de l’homme et des dieux. Se faisant, nous sortons de la représentation commune d’une croix ou d’un carré, comme le Geviert semble le dire, pour ouvrir un cercle où la pensée demeure en quête de l’Être. (shrink)

The Concept of Milieu in Environmental Ethics discusses how we can come together to address current environmental problems at the planetary level, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, transborder pollution and desertification. -/- The book recognises the embedded individual sociocultural and environmental contexts that impact our everyday choices. It asks, in this pluralism of worldviews, how can we build common ground to tackle environmental issues? What is our individual moral responsibility within the larger collaborative challenge? Through philosophical reasoning, this (...) book pragmatically addresses these questions and builds a framework to support sustainable ways of living. At the core of the book, it draws on the concept of milieu (fūdo) inspired by the Japanese philosopher Watsuji Tetsurō, which captures how we act within and perceive our surroundings as a web of culturally, historically and geographically situated meanings and values. In the past decade, the Norwegian government has emphasized user participation as an important goal in the care of mentally ill patients, through governmental strategic plans. At the same time, the governmental documents request normalization of psychiatric patients, including the re‐socialization of psychiatric patients back into society outside the psychiatric hospital. Milieu therapy is a therapeutic tool to ensure user participation and re‐socialization. Based on an ethnographic study in a long‐term psychiatric ward in a psychiatric hospital, we identified how (...) staff tried to implement user participation in their milieu‐oriented therapy work. We have identified three major tensions and challenges in implementing user participation in milieu‐therapeutic work. First, it is difficult to implement individual‐based user participation and at the same time take collective house rules and codes of conduct into consideration. Second, user participation proved a difficulty when patients’ viewpoints challenged staff judgements on proper conduct and goals for which patients might aim. Third, user participation becomes a challenge when trying to establish relationships based on equality when using milieu therapy in a biomedical hierarchical hospital structure. These tensions and challenges are seen in light of paradoxical political frames and demands on one side, and milieu therapy as a complex tradition anchored in different ideologies on the other. L’article esquisse une histoire de la notion de milieu en confrontant l’article de Georges Canguilhem, « Le vivant et son milieu » (1946), à celui de Leo Spitzer « Milieu et ambiance » (1942). Alors que Spitzer conteste l’opposition entre un milieu abstrait et un environnement « chaud », Canguilhem entend transformer les éléments d’une compréhension mécaniste du milieu en une idée vitaliste et productive de l’interaction mutuelle entre milieu et organisme. L’article se concentre (...) ensuite sur la perspective littéraire et esthétique de la discussion de la relation entre le vivant et son milieu, à partir de l’Histoire de la littérature anglaise de Taine. Dans deux textes de 1930 et 1931, Canguilhem présente une critique véhémente de Taine et oppose à la compréhension déterministe du milieu un concept esthétique qu’il réinvestit pour les sciences de la vie : le concept de création. En repensant la notion de milieu à travers une « esthétique du milieu », l’article conclut en opposant les critiques de Spitzer et de Canguilhem adressées à la compréhension déterministe du milieu et montre que l’opposition radicale entre détermination et création, que Canguilhem semble établir dans ses premiers textes, est reformulée dans son étude postérieure sur Le normal et le pathologique. La vie est créatrice relativement à son milieu au travers des déplacements vers un nouveau milieu, qui est lui-même, à son tour, vulnérable, précaire et inachevé. Pour penser une telle esthétique du milieu, il faut remodeler la notion d’activité artistique à partir d’un concept du vivant qui se forme dans sa confrontation constante avec son milieu. (shrink)

Jean-Luc Nancy is a prolific thinker, not only because of an abundant body of work—more than a hundred titles—but also and above all because his thought, in the form of an opening, encourages and invites us to think what he himself has not put into question. So it is with the category of “milieu”. This category, of which Georges Canguilhem in his time marked the contemporaneity, is more relevant today than ever. It enables us to think differently about our (...) world, and about what makes the world our world. Who makes the “we,” when we think through the “milieu”? How can we think from the relationship first and not from a primordial subject? How, therefore, can we think of another subjectivity, beyond the reflexive subjectivity of the human? Dans cet article, nous présentons une formulation néo-aristotélicienne de la doctrine du juste milieu. Nous commençons par décrire la formulation classique de la doctrine par Aristote, telle qu'elle est exposée dans l’Éthique à Nicomaque. Nous présentons en outre les éléments fondamentaux qui régissent les matrices de concepts (Franceschi 2002). Nous proposons ensuite une nouvelle formulation de la doctrine du juste milieu, directement dérivée de la structure-même des matrices de concepts. Nous comparons également la présente formulation de la doctrine (...) du juste milieu avec celle d'Aristote, en mettant en évidence les points communs et les différences. Nous proposons aussi une interprétation de la formulation aristotélicienne de la doctrine du juste milieu. Enfin, nous montrons comment la version néo-aristotélicienne de la doctrine du juste milieu permet de répondre à plusieurs objections, et notamment à celles qui ont été classiquement soulevées à l’encontre de sa version aristotélicienne. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin's spiritual masterpiece, The Divine Milieu, in a newly-revised translation by Siôn Cowell, is addressed to those who have lost faith in conventional religion but who still have a sense of the divine at the heart of the cosmos. "The heavens declare the glory of God," sings the Psalmist. Teilhard would agree. "We are surrounded," he says, "by a certain sort of pessimist who tells us continually that our world is foundering in atheism. He sees a universe in movement where progress is the spiritualisation of matter and its opposite is the materialisation of spirit. Teilhard opts for progress. An overview of 20 years of environmental philosophy in the Netherlands.

En référence à la mésologie ( Umweltlehre ) de Jakob von Uexküll (1864-1944), à la logique du lemme de Yamauchi Tokuryû (1890-1982) et à la « science naturelle » ( shizengaku 自然学) d’Imanishi Kinji (1902-1992), on examine ici le rapport entre hasard, contingence et nécessité dans l’évolution des espèces.

The concept of humans as relational individuals living in a milieu can provide some solutions to various obstacles of theorization that are standing in the way of an ethics of sustainability. The idea of a milieu was developed by Tetsuro Watsuji as a web of signification and symbols. It refers to the environment as lived by a subjective relational human being and not as artificially objectified. The milieu can neither be separated from its temporal—or historical—dimension as it (...) is directly related to the “now” of perceptions and actions in the world. In other words, elements of the natural milieu can be said to have a constitutive value as they contribute to our well-being by helping us make sense of our life and our world. In their temporal and relational dimensions, Watsuji’s notions of the milieu and human being are thus directly related to the notion of sustainability. This concept offers some convincing solutions to overcoming the problem of temporal distance, by shifting the center of argumentation from unknown, passive, and biologically dependent not-yet- born people to the transmission of a meaningful historical milieu. The turning point here is that if what matters is the survival of ideal and material projects that people live for, then future generations have tremendous power over them, as the actions of those future people will determine the success or failure of the projects started by present generations. The distinction between nature and artifice has been definitive for Western conceptions of the role of humans within their natural environment. But the human must already be separated from nature in order to distinguish between nature and artifice. This separation, in turn, facilitates a classification of knowledge in general, typically cast in terms of a hierarchy of sciences that ascends from the natural sciences to the social (or human) sciences. However, this hierarchy considers nature as a substantial foundation upon which (...) artifice operates and to which it responds. Here I examine three inter-related concepts that, by focusing on events rather than substances, operate beyond the nature–artifice distinction and thereby resist the hierarchical classification of the sciences: Foucault’s concept of technology, the concept of milieu as it crosses over historically from physics to biology and anthropology, and Deleuze and Guattari’s reconfiguration of the concept of milieu in terms of their concept of machine. Examines Boethius's life in Italy at the time of Theoderic the Ostrogoth. It presents his background and intellectual milieu, along with the four main traditions on which he draws: Greek Neoplatonism, Latin philosophical writing, Greek Christian literature and the Latin church fathers. In addition, the chapter briefly discusses Boethius’ treatises on Music and Arithmetic.

On a tenté, à partir des Stances du milieu par excellence, de ressaisir le sens de la vacuité selon Nāgārjuna : cela supposait que l’on suspendît les croyances fondant l’attachement de l’ego à un « soi-même » tout autant qu’aux « choses ». Par là, on entrevoyait l’idée d’un milieu absolu, par lequel les phénomènes, vides de « nature propre », seraient interconnectés sans être assujettis aux formes conventionnelles de l’espace et du temps.

Starting from the observation of the seriousness and recurrence of the “European crises” for more than fifteen years, this article proposes to study one of their main causes: the “midstream” that characterizes the contemporary political and institutional situation of Europe, in particular of the European Union, the eurozone and the Schengen area, that is, the unsustainable tension between, on the one hand, the irreducibly contradictory diversity of the member states of these institutions at this intermediate stage of their integration, and, (...) on the other hand, the necessity, for the overcoming of the crises, of the accomplishment of their integration into a European political unity. The main thesis of the article is that only such a unification could overcome the current crises, provided that it is open to the rest of the world, on the internal mode of hospitality and external mode of contribution to the unification of the world itself. 캉길렘에 따르면, 환경은 생명체를 이해하기 위해 필수적인 사유의 범주이다. 환경에 대한 생물학적인 논의는 환경을 생명체의 조직화가 이루어지기 위한 외적 원인 혹은 생명체가 자기의 내적 체계에 따라 구성하는 산물로 개념화한다. 하지만 이러한 개념화는 생명체와 환경을 이항대립 관계로 파악한다는 점에서 불충분하다. 오히려 환경은 생명체의 조직화를 구성하는 인식론적이고 존재론적인 충분 이유로 이해되어야 한다. 이를 위해서는 우선 환경의 이중성에 대한 분석이 요구된다. 환경은 물리적이고 지리적인 동시에 생명체에 의해 구성되는 공간이기도 하다. 이러한 분석에 따르면, 물리적이고 지리적인 환경은 생명체에 대해 잠재적인 환경으로 개념화될 것이다. 잠재적인 환경은 (...) 생명체의 신체와의 마주침을 통해 생명체에 대한 현실적인 환경으로 분화하고, 이때 환경은 생명체에 의해 해결되어야 하는 문제로서 출현한다. 이러한 의미에서 생명체의 조직화는 생명체가 환경에서 제기되는 문제를 해결하는 과정, 즉 생명의 과정을 표현한다. Dans son Traité 29, « Sur la vision », Plotin aborde à ce propos une difficulté consistant à savoir quelle part y joue le « milieu » séparant l’objet senti de l’organe. Cette question occupe les quatre premiers chapitres du traité : afin d’y préciser le rôle du milieu dans la perception visuelle, Plotin en admet provi­soirement la nécessité, dressant au premier chapitre la liste des possibilités théo­riques envisageables à partir de cette hypothèse de travail. Afin de mieux (...) voir les étapes et les enjeux de cette argumentation dense, elliptique et à peine effleurée par les études sur la question, je l’analyse ici à la lumière de textes antérieurs por­tant sur les modalités de la sensation comme telle et sur le problème, plus géné­ral, de la transmission d’une affection à travers un milieu donné. Ces questions, abordées avant Plotin dans des cadres divers et à partir de problématiques va­riant d’un auteur à l’autre (Platon, Aristote et ses successeurs dans le Lycée, Chrysippe de Soles, Plutarque de Chéronée, Pline l’Ancien, Galien de Pergame), ont été retravaillées par Alexandre d’Aphrodise à propos d’un thème précis, pour donner lieu à un modèle original de transmission dont j’aimerais montrer qu’il est d’un apport décisif dans le Traité 29, puisqu’il donne à Plotin l’instru­ment indispensable pour, en l’approfondissant afin de mieux le dépasser, élabo­rer par là sa propre théorie de la vision, solidaire d’un processus de désaffection du milieu perceptif amorcé avant lui. Some critical philosophers of race have argued that whiteness can be understood as a technology of affect and that white supremacy is comprised partly of unconscious habits that result in racialized perception. In an effort to deepen our understanding of the affective and bodily dimensions of white supremacy and the ways in which affective habits are socially produced, I look to insights from situated affectivity. Theorists in this field maintain that affective experience is not simply a matter of felt inner (...) states, but rather socially and environmentally embedded and fundamentally relational. Jan Slaby presents the concept of an ‘affective arrangement’ as a way to approach affectivity in terms of relational dynamics unfolding within a particular setting. Applying this concept to the societal level, Paul Schuetze introduces the notion of ‘affective milieu.’ I argue that these notions of ‘affective arrangement’ and ‘affective milieu,’ together with an organicist account of habit, can help to illuminate the workings of white supremacy in the United States. My proposed account highlights the extent to which white supremacy is an affective, bodily phenomenon and how racist habits are formed over the course of learning and ongoing affective engagement, in the context of various social settings. Crucially, these affective habits are fully bound up with habits of appraisal, interpretation, and judgment, and therefore inseparable from how subjects come to see and understand their world. Un’analisi del film di Ejzenštejn La corazzata Potëmkin – e in particolare della scena della lamentazione funebre del popolo di Odessa attorno al corpo del marinaio Vakulinčuk – offre l’occasione di riflettere intorno a una dialettica fondamentale che si instaura nella teoria e nella pratica filmica del regista russo: la dialettica fra montaggio ritmico e montaggio tonale, fra immagine-taglio (obraz-obrez) e immagine-atmosfera (obraz-sreda). Sreda significa «milieu» in tutti i sensi del termine: ciò che costituisce l’elemento materiale, seppur diafano, del (...) visibile (il medium, quindi); ciò che instaura un campo (Feld) percettivo; ciò che disegna l’ambiance nella quale abitiamo (la nostra Umwelt, o mondo-ambiente), cioè lo spazio emozionale (Stimmung) che ci sollecita dinnanzi a un’immagine. Nel caso particolare analizzato, alla lamentazione funebre dei piangenti attorno al cadavere del marinaio, che viene dettagliata dal montaggio ritmico dell’obraz-obrez, risponde quel che Ejzenštejn chiamava il «lamento delle nebbie» nel porto di Odessa: tramite un montaggio tonale, l’obraz-sreda del paesaggio si fa «risonatore psichico» che consuona e amplifica il lutto degli esseri umani, istituendo con questo una peculiare «somiglianza». L’istituzione di tale somiglianza consente a Ejzenštejn di mettere al contempo in discussione (in sintonia con le riflessioni sviluppate negli anni Venti da teorici formalisti quali Šklovskij, Ėjchenbaum, Kazanskij, Piotrovskij) la presunta specificità del medium filmico, a tutto vantaggio di un’interazione fra differenti paradigmi mediali – pittoricità, musicalità, poeticità – che si illuminano a vicenda, mostrandosi come altrettante articolazioni del ritmo. This article approaches the challenges of the distribution of responsibility for climate change on a local level using the framework of the milieu. It suggests that the framework of the milieu, inspired by Japanese and cross-cultural environmental philosophy, provides pathways to address the four challenges of climate change (global dispersion, fragmentation of agency, institutional inadequacy, temporal delay). The framework of the milieu clarifies the interrelations between the individual, the community, and the local milieu and is open (...) to a conservative view of human communities and an inclusive view of multispecies communities. On this basis, an account of individual responsibility that is anchored in the local milieu and includes a responsibility to collaborate across milieus is developed. It consists of a forward-looking responsibility that balances a degree of contributory responsibility for one’s imprints on the milieu with a degree of capacity-responsibility that varies regarding the individual’s knowledge and powers, and the acceptability of practices within the local milieu. This essay tells the story of early French ethology—“the science dealing with the habits of living beings and their relations, both with each other and with the cosmic environment.” The driving force behind this “ethological movement” was the biologist Alfred Giard (1846–1908). The essay discusses how the ethological viewpoint of Giard and his pupils developed in a period in which the current disciplines of field biology were not yet crystallized. It also shows how concepts and research interests could travel within (...) Giard's network from one working context to another, even from one discipline to another. By studying this traveling process, the essay reveals that, unlike the modern ethology of Konrad Lorenz and Niko Tinbergen, Giard's ethology was not a discipline at all but, rather, a scientific attitude. This scientific attitude triggered a reappraisal of fieldwork, but at the same time Giard's ethology was never limited to the field alone. Discussions about ethics of Big Data often focus on the ethics of data processing: collecting, storing, handling, analysing and sharing data. Data-based systems, however, do not come from nowhere. They are designed and brought into being within social spaces – or social milieu. This paper connects philosophical considerations of individual and collective capacity to enact practical reason to the influence of social spaces. Building a deeper engagement with the social imaginaries of technology development through analysis of two years of (...) fieldwork with start-ups working on Internet of Things, this paper suggests that different action positions can emerge, with consequences for how data is understood and valued. The Disengaged, Pragmatist and Idealist ethical action positions identified in the paper reveal the ways individuals and groups negotiate possibilities for ethical action, through justifications, explanations and structuring of system features.
