Cette contribution examine l’apport original de Philon d’Alexandrie à la transmission d’une tradition de paradoxes décrivant la condition du sage, attestés dans des sources stoïciennes et repris dans le Quod omnis probus liber sit philonien. Deux questions relatives à la condition paradoxale du sage sont analysées : sa divinisation et le modèle de science qui la caractérise. Philon montre en effet une interprétation complémentaire, qu’il désigne comme « disjonctive », de la perfection du sage : il reprend les paradoxes (...) stoïciens, mais change substantiellement le « paradigme conjonctif », qui, selon la célèbre analyse de Jacques Brunschwig, les sous-tend. Ce changement a lieu grâce à l’intervention d’une clé non seulement médio-platonicienne, mais aussi biblique : celle de la transcendance de la perfection divine. (shrink)

Abstract.Since the gene splicing debates of the 1980s, the public has been exposed to an ongoing sequence of genetic and reproductive technologies. Many issue areas have outcomes that lose track of people's inner values or engender opposing religious viewpoints defying final resolution. This essay relocates the discussion of what is an acceptable application from the individual to the societal level, examining technologies that stand to address large numbers of people and thus call for policy resolution, rather than individual fiat, in (...) their application. A major source of guidance is the “Genetic Frontiers” series of professional dialogues and conferences held by the National Conference for Community and Justice from 2002 to 2004. Genetic testing, human gene therapy, genetic engineering of plants and animals, and stem cell technology are examined. While differences in perspective on the beginning of life persist, a stepwise approach to the examination of genetic testing reveals areas of general agreement. Stewardship of life, human co‐creativity with the divine, and social justice help define the bounds of application of genetic engineering and therapy; compassionate care plays a major role in establishing stem cell policy. Active, sustained dialogue is a useful resource for enabling sharing of religious values and crystallization of policies. (shrink)

Aristotle is oftentimes viewed through a strictly philosophical lens as heir to Plato and has having introduced logical rigor where an emphasis on the theory of Forms formerly prevailed. It must be appreciated that Aristotle was the son of a physician, and that his inculcation of the thought of other Greek philosophers addressing health and the natural elements led to an extremely broad set of biologically- and medically-related writings. As this article proposes, Aristotle deepened the fourfold theory of the elements (...) with anatomic and physiologic observations. In books like History of Animals, Parts of Animals, and the lost Anatomai, he actively dissected organisms and recorded his findings. The corpus of medically-related literature Aristotle developed had a direct influence on subsequent Greek thinkers, including Galen, and on Medieval Islamic and modern Western practitioners such as William Harvey. Aristotle's ideas continue to influence modern medical thinkers in Europe and America through both his interpretation by European philosophers gaining the attention of medical humanists, and his writings' enduring impact on medical researchers balancing scientific with more personalistic approaches to medicine. The estrangement between genetic scientists and theologians originating in the 1960s is reflected in novel combinations of human thought (subject) and genes (investigational object), paralleling each other through the universal process known in chaos theory as self-similarity. The clash and recombination of genes and knowledge captures what Philip Hefner refers to as irony, one of four voices he suggests transmit the knowledge and arguments of the religion-and-science debate. When viewed along a tangent connecting irony to leadership, journal dissemination, and the (...) activities of the "public intellectual" and the public at large, the sequence of voices is shown to resemble the passage of genetic information from DNA to mRNA, tRNA, and protein, and from cell nucleus to surrounding environment. In this light, Hefner's inquiry into the voices of Zygon is bound up with the very subject matter Zygon covers. (shrink)

Coherence and correspondence are classical contenders as theories of truth. In this paper we examine them instead as interacting factors in the dynamics of belief across epistemic networks. We construct an agent-based model of network contact in which agents are characterized not in terms of single beliefs but in terms of internal belief suites. Individuals update elements of their belief suites on input from other agents in order both to maximize internal belief coherence and to incorporate ‘trickled in’ elements of (...) truth as correspondence. Results, though often intuitive, prove more complex than in simpler models (Hegselmann & Krause 2002, 2006; Grim, Singer, Reade & Fisher 2015). The optimistic finding is that pressures toward internal coherence can exploit and expand on small elements of truth as correspondence is introduced into epistemic networks. Less optimistic results show that pressures for coherence can also work directly against the incorporation of truth, particularly when coherence is established first and new data is introduced later. This paper outlines the demographic characteristics of the Baiga tribe, one of the most primitive of the aboriginal tribal groups of Central India. The Baiga population has grown steadily since the first anthropological study of the tribe in the 1930s. Age at menarche, age at marriage, breast-feeding, and time interval between marriage and first conception are natural. There are more females than males. Sub-tribe endogamy is common; consanguineous marriage is favoured (34% of marriages are between first cousins) and marital distance (...) is low (mean 7·1 km). Though the mean menarcheal age is high (15·2 years), mean age at first marriage is low (16·6 years), giving a long reproductive period. (shrink)

Les considérations physiologiques sont étrangères, en tant que telles, au projet de l'Ethique, et sans doute, à l'ensemble des préoccupations philosophiques de Spinoza. Au début de Ia seconde partie de l'Ethique, Spinoza précise clairement: “j'expliquerai seulement ce qui peut nous conduire comme par la main à la connaissance de l’ Arne humaine et de sa béatitude suprême”. Pourtant, le livre ne laisse pas de contenir une révision intéressante du modèle mécaniste que Descartes appliquait à l'explication du corps humain; il (...) contient surtout une hypothèse sur Ia structure organique, qui, nous le croyons, a joué un rôle de modèle pour un certain type de théorie de l'être vivant. Ce type de conception se trouve d'abord dans l'iatromécanisme de Boerhaave et de ses disciples au XVIIIe siècle, mais les séquelles en sont identifiables jusque dans Ia philosophie biologique contemporaine. À partir du XVIe siècle, le gouvernement «mixte» de Venise devient, pour l'Europe de l'Ancien Régime, un modèle politique. Composant harmonieusement les principes de la démocratie (avec le Grand Conseil), de l'aristocratie (avec le Sénat) et de la monarchie (avec le Doge), garantissant la paix sociale et la stabilité des institutions, prétendant préserver Venise des aléas de l'Histoire, cette forme de gouvernement donne naissance à un véritable mythe. Volet essentiel de la réflexion sur la diversité des traditions républicaines italiennes, (...) l'étude du mythe politique vénitien permet aussi de s'interroger sur les emplois discutables du paradigme républicain dans l'historiographie récente. La pensée postmoderne considère qu’on défend mal la démocratie en en proposant un modèle théorique surplombant et qu’il est préférable de s’en tenir à une appréciation immanente des expériences démocratiques. La philosophie politique serait ainsi incapable de s’affranchir de ses prétentions normatives pourtant inadaptées aux contextes historiques. La critique est stimulante mais partielle : car lorsque la philosophie politique avance des modèles de démocratie, c’est moins pour se placer en dehors de l’histoire qu’afin de rendre possible la délibération des (...) citoyens à l’intérieur de leur communauté d’appartenance. L’impact social de la science et de la technologie se manifeste par une série de relations que le présent modèle va découper sur des boucles de rétroaction. L’activité techno-scientifique des humains crée des perturbations dans le réseau des relations interindividuelles et sociales ainsi que dans l’environnement physique ; en retour, les environnements sociaux et physiques ainsi modifiés exercent des déterminations qui conditionnent et affectent la poursuite des activités initiales. De plus, à toutes les étapes de ces boucles de rétroaction (...) jouent des relations, en boucles également, par lesquelles certaines actions individuelles produisent un effet social et des états de choses collectifs produisent des effets sur les comportements individuels.Science and technology affect social life through numerous relations and the present model undertakes to picture the main ones as specific portions of feedback cycles. By its very creativity in science and technology man induces changes in the network of interindividual and social relations, and drastically modifies the physical environment ; those social and physical changes, in turn, serve as conditions and causes for retroactive changes in the human scientific and technological behavior. Furthermore, the model introduces the concept of " amplification socioficatrice " in order to highlight those additional relations through which certain individual actions or reactions come to have a social effect and existence in the midst of the generalized loop relations obtaining between individual and society. Le but de cet article est de présenter un modèle formel des processus dichotomiques platoniciens. Cette méthode, déjà utilisée dans le Gorgias et décrite dans le Phèdre, reçoit une grande extension dans les dialogues ultérieurs. Elle s'efforce d'obtenir une définition à partir des divisions successives d'un ensemble de concepts. Nous montrons que les chaînes de dichotomies ne fonctionnent pas comme des classifications, mais comme des « filtres convergents » sur l'espace des Idées. Cela veut dire que cet espace est, (...) formellement parlant, un espace topologique compact, donc fini. Mais, dans d'autres textes, Platon semble indiquer que les Idées sont en nombre infini. Dans cette hypothèse, il resterait possible d'atteindre, au moins à l'infini, quelque chose comme une définition, en considérant l'Idée du Bien comme une sorte de principe de compactification de l'univers platonicien. The purpose of this article is to present a formal model of platonician dichotomic processes. This method, already used in Gorgias and described in Phaedrus, takes a great development in further dialogues. It tries to get a definition from successive divisions of a set of concepts. We show that the chains of dichotomies do not work as classifications but as "convergent filters "on the space of Ideas. It means that this space is, formally speaking, a compact and therefore, finite, topological space. But in some other texts, Platon seems to specify that there is an infinite number of Ideas. In this case, it will remain possible to reach, at least in the infinite, something like a definition, by regarding the Idea of Good as a sort of compactness principle of the platonician universe. This article critically discusses the concept of economic rationality, arguing that it is too narrow and specific to encompass the full concept of practical rationality. Economic rationality is identified here with the use of the optimizing model of decision, as well as of expected utility apparatus to deal with uncertainty. To argue that practical rationality is broader than economic rationality, the article claims that practical rationality includes bounded rationality as a particular case, and that bounded rationality cannot be reduced to (...) economic rationality as defined here. In this theoretical contribution, we interpret the notion of professional development in the light of concepts coming from cognitive development. This brings us to consider teacher training as not only having to allow the elaboration of skills, but also as having to encourage the development of new cognitive structures. We explore the theoretical concepts in relation with certain processes revealed by the reflexive texts of the students. Finally, we propose ways that could foster certain dimensions of global professional development in (...) learners, among which self-regulated learning, the focus on certain concerns and taking into account certain types of information.
