Julius Evolas writing covered a vast range of subjects, from a distinctive and categorical ideological outlook and has been extremely influential on a significant number of extreme right thinkers, activists and organisations. This book is the first full length study in English to present his political thought to a wider audience, beyond that of his followers and sympathisers, and to bring into the open the study of a neglected strand of contemporary Western thought, that of traditionalism. Evola (...) deserves more attention because he is an influential writer. His following comes from an important if largely ignored political movement: activists and commentators whose political positions are, like his, avowedly traditionalist, authoritarian, anti-modern, anti-democratic and anti-liberal. With honourable exceptions, contemporary academic study tends to treat these groups as a minority within a minority, a sub-species of Fascism, from whom they are held to derive their ideas and their support. This work seeks to bring out more clearly the complexity of Evolas post-war strategy, so as to explain how he can be adopted both by the neo-fascist groups committed to violence, and by groups such as the European New Right whose approach is more aimed at influence from within liberal democracies. Furlong also recognises the relevance of Evolas ideas to anti-globalisation arguments, including a re-examination of his arguments for detachment and spontaneism (apolitia). (shrink)

"Liberalism" is widely used to describe a variety of social and political ideas, but has been an especially difficult concept for historians and political scientists to define. Burckhardt, Mill, and Tocqueville define one type of liberal thought. They share an aristocratic liberalism marked by distaste for the masses and the middle class, opposition to the commercial spirit, fear and contempt of mediocrity, and suspicion of the centralized state. Their fears are combined with an elevated ideal of (...) human personality, an ideal which affirms modernity. All see their ideals threatened in the immediate future, and all hope to save European civilization from barbarism and militarism through some form of education, although all grow more pessimistic towards the end of their lives. Aristocratic Liberalism ignores the national boundaries that so often confine the history of political thought, and uses the perspective thus gained to establish a pan-European type of political thought. Going beyond Burckhardt, Mill, and Tocqueville, Aristocratic Liberalism argues for new ways of looking at nineteenth-century liberalism. It corrects many prevalent misconceptions about liberalism, and suggests new paths for arriving at a better understanding of the leading form of nineteenth-century political thought. The new Afterword by the author presents a novel description of liberal political language as the "discourse of capacity," and suggests that this kind of language is the common denominator of all forms of European liberalism in the nineteenth century. Avineri brings to bear on his study of Marx a thorough and sensitive understanding of Marx's published and unpublished writings; a subtle appreciation of the philosophical climate within which Marx functioned, especially in his interpretation of Hegel and Feuerbach; and an ability to avoid the standard clichés of interpretation and provide fresh insight into a number of difficult issues. Especially noteworthy is (...) his illuminating interpretation of Marx's Critique of Hegel's Philosophy of Right where Avineri shows how Marx arrived at many of the distinctive motifs of his political philosophy through a detailed critique of Hegel. Avineri also escapes the sentimentality that surrounds many discussions of Marx's concept of alienation. His discussion of the unity of theory of praxis is particularly sensitive to the tensions and stresses glossed over by Marx. The author also makes many revealing points concerning Marx's condemnation of terror and his attitude toward violence. Throughout, Avineri displays the knack of bringing just the right text to bear on controversial issues. Herder's thought is presented as well advanced beyond his times, if often disorganized and confused. To contrast his ideas with those of more traditional eighteenth century political thought, the latter is described in terms of the mechanical models it embodies, while the organic and teleological categories of the former are stressed in discussing his answers to the questions of one and many, causation, motion, and power in their political contexts. As much attention is given to Herder's (...) philosophies of history and education as to his social and political thought in the usual sense, and the subtitle is distinctly misleading, since Herder's views on nationalism, involving the basic themes of self-determination and Volksgeist, are only one of many areas of thought presented to the reader. This book examines the utopian dimension of contemporary social and political thought. Arguing for a utopian optic for the human sciences, el-Ojeili claims that major transformations of the utopian constellation have occurred since the end of the twentieth century. Following a survey of major utopian shifts in the modern period, el-Ojeili focuses on three spaces within today’s utopian constellation. At the liberal centre, we see a splintering effect, particularly after the global financial crisis of 2008: a contingent (...) neo-liberalism, a neo-Keynesian turn, and a liberalism of fear. At the far-Right margin, we see the consolidation of post-fascism, a combination of “the future in the past”, elements of the post-modern present, and appeals to a novel future.
