This paper aims to study the argumentative basis on which the prevention of migration is justified and hatred politics is institutionalised in three Mediterranean settings, namely Greece, Malta, and Italy, that were at the centre of the so-called ‘refugee crisis’ in 2015–2017. Following the rubric of corpus-assisted Discourse-Historical Approach (DHA) to Critical Discourse Studies (CDS), we trace (a) the main meaningful patterns, and (b) discursive and argumentation strategies (topoi) in three balanced corpora of mainstream news portals aligned with centre-right and (...) centre-left political views. Among our main findings, the mobilisation of migrant populations is construed as an extremely polarised issue both in national and EU contexts and claims in favour of its prevention are justified on topoi of danger/threat, numbers and burdening/weighing down. The present paper aims to report on the preliminary findings from the initial stages of ongoing research on hate speech in Lithuanian online comments. Comments are marked strongly by such phenomena as flaming and trolling; therefore, in this genre we can expect a high degree of hostility, obscenity, high incidence of insults and aggressive lexis, which can inflict harm to individuals or organizations. The goal of the current research is thus to make an attempt to identify some features of verbal (...) aggression in Lithuanian by applying the principles and instruments of corpus linguistics, which proved to be a useful approach when dealing with such issues as trolling. It is expected that further analysis of those features will help to identify and define formal linguistic criteria that could facilitate identification of hate speech in public discourse. The data has been obtained from the Lithuanian corpus of user-generated comments collected from one major Lithuanian portal, www.delfi.lt. The corpus consists of all the comments posted in the year 2014 and in total includes 17,909 comments, which make up 1,160,109 words. For the initial data analysis, linguistic aspects, such as wordlists, collocations, and formulaic language, were analysed by using the AntConc software. The interpretations of the results are still very tentative, but what the initial findings show is that overt aggression does not feature among the most frequent and most salient features of comments. Aggression is, in our data, indirectly expressed through creative language use, which can mainly be studied through qualitative analysis. (shrink)

A wide variety of ontologies relevant to the biological and medical domains are available through the OBO Foundry portal, and their number is growing rapidly. Integration of these ontologies, while requiring considerable effort, is extremely desirable. However, heterogeneities in format and style pose serious obstacles to such integration. In particular, inconsistencies in naming conventions can impair the readability and navigability of ontology class hierarchies, and hinder their alignment and integration. While other sources of diversity are tremendously complex and challenging, (...) agreeing a set of common naming conventions is an achievable goal, particularly if those conventions are based on lessons drawn from pooled practical experience and surveys of community opinion. We summarize a review of existing naming conventions and highlight certain disadvantages with respect to general applicability in the biological domain. We also present the results of a survey carried out to establish which naming conventions are currently employed by OBO Foundry ontologies and to determine what their special requirements regarding the naming of entities might be. Lastly, we propose an initial set of typographic, syntactic and semantic conventions for labelling classes in OBO Foundry ontologies. Adherence to common naming conventions is more than just a matter of aesthetics. Such conventions provide guidance to ontology creators, help developers avoid flaws and inaccuracies when editing, and especially when interlinking, ontologies. Common naming conventions will also assist consumers of ontologies to more readily understand what meanings were intended by the authors of ontologies used in annotating bodies of data. (shrink)

As Ricœur scholars know, the literature by and on Ricœur is vast. Material written by Ricœur that is not collected in published volumes is often difficult to locate, and even in the published volumes it is frequently a challenge to locate where Ricœur discusses a particular topic. Given the amount of his work it can be a challenge too to determine changes in his analyses over the life of his corpus. And locating secondary literature on Ricœur can be equally problematic. (...) In response, we have been working to establish a model for how Ricœur’s corpus might be digitized so that the issues of access, keyword location, and pattern might all be addressed. To develop the model, we are starting with Ricœur’s primary texts in English and plan to expand over time to other languages and to the secondary literature on Ricœur. In the present article we discuss our model and its five steps: digital access; copyright; text preparation for digital searches and analysis; examples of digital searches and analyses; and an archive portal interface that allows users to query based on an extensible set of search variables without needing to know or access the underlying search logic. Take, for example, the humble phenomenon of the "techno-bore." Such people, having acquired some new electronic gizmo, spend all their time talking about the thing, especially savoring such conversations with like-minded techno-bores, who go on in equal and endless length about their latest toys. Rather than becoming a tool for organizing one's affairs, the digital assistant becomes one's main affair. Or, consider the case of the Internet. Although the "Web" is supposed to put us in touch with each other, say, by making e-mail possible, we find ourselves either unable to cope with the avalanche of mail that comes over the portal and thus unable to respond to it all (or at all), or we spend much more time on our mail than we ever did, thus making the mail itself a nuisance and consequently much less useful than formerly.Of course, none of this is unique to computers and the digital workplace. The same complaints have been voiced in regard to cars, television (and radio, too), modern medicine, and industrialization—in fact, the whole gamut of innovations that we label "technology." Indeed, although information technology is Hershock's main target, it represents only the perfection of a form that has been developing for some time and which he often refers to with the phrase "technologies of control." That is, cars, televisions, blenders, can openers, and computers are tools that are put to use in order to make our lives easier; they accomplish this purpose by putting some element of the world, some range of things, more directly under our control and, importantly, by limiting our involvement with them as well. We make things more tractable, more subject to our wanting (as distinct, Hershock says, from our desiring, which involves an element of respect for the desired), and thus more an extension of ourselves rather than obdurate and resistant things. For example, insofar as a sledgehammer makes breaking rocks easier, it makes rocks and their sizes and shapes more a function of our will, less a reflection of their nature, and distances us also from the material thing. To touch a rock with one's hands is an entirely different experience, a much more intimate experience than touching it with a hammer. In a curious way, says Hershock, the rock becomes more "iconic." In other words, it becomes more representation—our representation—and less a thing-in-itself. The computer and its screen "icons" simply push this envelope to its logical end, reducing all things to "buttons" that can be pushed at will, as our wants dictate. And as we well know from Orwell, such power corrupts absolutely and completely, corrupts both the ruler and the ruled, reducing citizens and ruler to an infantile level. Two related phenomena attend such a development, Hershock tells us: narcissism and nihilism. We become more narcissistic because we become more obsessed with our wants as a reflection of our world. In 1927 he published two philosophy books, The Analysis of Matter and An Outline of Philosophy . His next book in academic philosophy, An Inquiry into Meaning and Truth , was not published until 1940. Yet, Russell published a significant amount of essays and popular books between 1927 and 1946, mostly to finance the running of Beacon Hill School, and his growing family. (...) Bullying behaviour among adolescents is a prevalent concern all over the world as it holds significant implications for their mental health and social life. Similarly, bullying has emerged as a grave concern in high schools in Pakistan. However, very limited literature has covered the dynamics of religious education and bullying behaviour among high school students in Pakistan. Therefore, this study seeks to investigate the impact of religious beliefs and practices on the prevalence of abuse and bullying among high school students (...) in Pakistan. The study has adopted a qualitative research design to fulfil this objective. The primary qualitative data for the study was collected by interviewing high school students from three prominent high schools in Pakistan. The data was analysed with the help of thematic analysis. The findings of this study indicate that religious education can help promote compassion, empathy, and respect among students. Thus, the study holds significant implications regarding the role of the community and teachers in taking a stand against bullying. (shrink)

El presente trabajo pretende valorar los aportes de Michel Foucault desde los conceptos de _Gubernamentalidad y bio-política_ para una conceptualización de la Hegemonía. Su contexto es, en primera instancia, el de una crítica del idealismo discursivo de Ernesto Laclau, que no reconoce al discurso como resultado de un sistema de relaciones disciplinares, operadas sobre los cuerpos y el medio. Por otra parte, tal crítica es indispensable también para contestar la incapacidad del Pensamiento Crítico Latinoamericano de articular los cambios operados por (...) el neoliberalismo en los procesos subjetivos de producción, afectos, institucionalidad y comunicación. En tal sentido las nociones foucaultianas permiten fundamentar el carácter contingente y discursivo de la Hegemonía, dando cuenta del sistema de prácticas disciplinares que su economía política comporta. El tratamiento del Estado y Sociedad Civil por el pensador francés será óbice para una crítica de la _razón neoliberal_, como presentada por Dardot y Laval. El estudio demuestra, en el contexto latinoamericano, como el neoliberalismo es resultado de un proceso de disputa hegemónica de imposición de los intereses coloniales de dominación a partir de un nuevo marco subjetivo. Most countries provide some form of nationality or citizenship either by birthright or inheritance. This paper accepts Jacques Derrida’s invitation to imagine nationality or citizenship otherwise, this time by death and burial: you are from where you die or are buried. I read Derrida’s invitation alongside his four studies of Martin Heidegger’s use of “Geschlecht” to argue that we ought to reconsider the relationship between the nation and (its) philosophy. I show that Derrida’s proposed “law of the eclipse” provides us (...) new resources to rethink nationalism today. (shrink)

In Parages, Jacques Derrida writes that the ‘Donner – le temps’ seminar ‘led up to’ a study of Maurice Blanchot’s La folie du jour. That study is the improvised fourteenth session of Donner le temps II. Derrida turns to La folie du jour to treat in more explicit terms the structure of the ‘ récit’ which was particularly relevant to his reading of Charles Baudelaire’s récit ‘La fausse monnaie’ earlier in the seminar, but which is almost entirely absent from the (...) sessions included in Donner le temps II. This paper proposes one possible reason for Derrida’s insistence on Blanchot in the seminar and for thinking the gift: La folie du jour’s narrator, which is not someone determinate, but personne (which, in French, can mean either an indeterminate ‘no one’ or a substitutable ‘anyone’ depending on the context). I argue that the aporetic structure of the gift is best expressed when the gift’s subject and object are indeterminable and substitutable, which is the case when the gift is given to or received from an impersonal personne (to or from no one or anyone). El presente trabajo busca explicar cómo la filosofía de Leibniz da cuenta de una concepción radicalmente objetiva de la belleza a partir de las posiciones teológicas y cosmológicas defendidas por el alemán en contra de Descartes y Spinoza. Después de introducir, en la primera sección, el lugar de la estética en los sistemas filosóficos de los racionalistas, la segunda sección se centra en exponer la definición de belleza propia de Leibniz y configurar un criterio de objetividad estética con el aporte (...) de discusiones filosóficas históricas y contemporáneas. En la tercera sección, se revisa el argumento de Leibniz contra el voluntarismo cartesiano y el subjetivismo de Spinoza en relación a la noción de belleza. En la cuarta, evaluaremos si la propuesta ontológica sobre la belleza de Leibniz es compatible con la definición de objetividad desarrollada en la segunda sección. Se concluye que, a la luz de la cosmología y metafísica leibniziana, la belleza debe ser independiente de toda corroboración subjetiva, ya que la belleza de las cosas es lógicamente anterior, incluso, a la existencia de éstas, lo que resulta en una concepción autónoma y objetiva de la belleza. According to the classical view, beauty is grounded on the universe’s objective harmony, defined by the formula of unity in variety. Thus, nature’s beauty is univocal and independent of subjective judgement. In this paper I argue that, although Leibniz’s view coincides with this formula, his philosophy offers an explanation for subjective dissent in aesthetic judgements about nature. I show that the acceptance of divergences on aesthetic value are the result of a conception of harmony that includes qualitative variety and dissonance.

France Guwy and Emmanuel Levinas discuss the relationship between “the Bible and philosophy.” Levinas explains that he never “experienced” a contradiction between the two, and that they both aim at the same thing: meaning outside of immanence. Such transcendence, Levinas argues, is impossible for the Spinozist.

El presente trabajo expone el intento romántico de la interpretación del ánimo épocal, aplicándolo a la misma génesis del romanticismo. Para ello, emn primer lugar, se analiza el caso paradigmáitico de la crísis que significó para Heinrich von Kleist la lectura de las críticas kantianas. Y, luego, se interroga por el verdadero sentido que comporta la "estetización del mundo y lo real" que lleva a cabo el romanticismo temprano, mostrando como esto significa una recuperación de los sentidos (para el sentido) (...) en contra de la razón. In 1982 Emmanuel Levinas contributed a “lesson” on religion to a series in Le Monde. Intended for a general audience, Levinas’s lesson is a clear and concise introduction to his thought in general—and, in particular, to the curious persistence of the idea of God or the Infinite despite modernity. After the death of God, what remains, invoking Descartes, is the “idea of God” or even the “expectation” of God (and, so, of some greater “meaning [sens] and justification”). Between Pascal and (...) Heidegger, Levinas perhaps surprisingly insists upon the Descartes of A Discourse on the Method to emphasize the bon sens (both “good” and “common” sense) that underpins any thought that goes “to God” (à Dieu). Levinas is, here again, after what makes such thought possible, that thought that can somehow relate the finite and the infinite, that “thinks more than it can think.”. (shrink)

El emprendimiento social es visualizado como alternativa para responder a las consecuencias que ha generado el neoliberalismo a nivel mundial. La revisión del concepto, desde una perspectiva axiológica y pragmática, por parte de algunos autores, han demostrado que el emprendimiento social, lejos de ser una alternativa al neoliberalismo es una continuidad del mismo. El presente artículo estudia la relación que tiene el emprendimiento social y el neoliberalismo en función de los elementos ontológicos que lo conforman y las escuelas de pensamiento (...) sobre las que se ha implementado. El resultado muestra las paradojas que presenta el concepto a nivel ontológico, y cómo los emprendimientos sociales desarrollados desde la escuela de Economía Social tienen una mayor capacidad de generar una ruptura con el sistema e ideología neoliberal; mientras que los emprendimientos desarrollados bajo la escuela de innovación social, tienden a generar una continuidad al neoliberalismo.Social entrepreneurship is visualized as an alternative to respond to the consequences generated by neoliberalism worldwide. The review of the concept, from an axiological and practical perspective by several authors, has shown that social entrepreneurship is an alternative to neoliberalism. This article studies the relationship between social entrepreneurship and neoliberalism regarding the ontological elements that make it up and the schools of thought on which it has implemented. The result shows the paradoxes that present the concept at the ontological level, and how the enterprises of the School of Economics have a higher capacity to generate a rupture with the neoliberal system and ideology; while entrepreneurship under the school of social innovation tends to create a continuity to neoliberalism. Abstract:Geodiversity is defined as “the natural range (diversity) of geological (rocks, minerals, fossils), geomorphological (land form, processes) and soil features. It includes their assemblages, relationships, properties, interpretations and systems.” This very physical definition is enlarged by a holistic point of view associated to cultural geomorphology which embraces social and artistic representations of landforms, sometimes considered as a geo-heritage. In this point of view, coal mining memory is symbolized by heap and mine's galleries which are anthropogenic landforms. With abandonment, their appearance (...) has changed through time and in the North of France, the “black gold” became “green gold.” This paper aims to reconstitute the landscape trajectories of these recently rediscovered “coalscapes” and focuses on European coal landscapes, particularly on the Atlantic Front. The studies of the iconography of the National Work Archives compared to present landscapes shows that new heritage statuses focus on picturesque landscape but also reveal an evolution of this model: after having included ecology, (geo)heritage coalscapes make the picturesque model change by taking into account environmental changes, new touristic practices (eco and geo-tourism) and new perceptions of industrial and mining landscapes. In a broader sense, this perception of landscapes refers to the anthropocene times, where human artifacts such as mining features represent human prints on the environment. This paper questions European coal landscape as symbols of migrating landscapes that linked, scientifically and aesthetically, old and modern Europe. (shrink)

ABSTRACT Marcia Sá Cavalcante Schuback’s Time in Exile illuminates being in “gerundive time.” The gerundive tense (which is similar to the infinitive tense in English) captures how our being is always already “suspended” between worlds and meanings—how our being is a “non-final verb.” Schuback considers such existence in the work of Martin Heidegger, Maurice Blanchot, and Clarice Lispector. Of the three thinkers, Lispector’s writing best reveals how existence (especially existence in exile) is an “immense struggle for presence.” Schuback’s hope is (...) that we may find a home in our homelessness. Gegenuber den Ansatzen, den fruhen Hegel entweder von den theologischen Jugendschriften her (Dilthey) oder aus seiner Kritik an der Nationalokonomie (Lukacs) zu verstehen, wird diese Arbeit geleitet von der Frage nach dem eigentumlichen philosophischen Interesse, das Hegel von Anfang fuhrte: Religion und Politik in eine Einheit zu bringen.

L’acceptabilité sociale fait référence aux échelons d’acceptation sociale accordée par les communautés et les autres parties prenantes à une entreprise, un projet ou une activité. La SLO est importante pour maintenir le développement économique local ; par conséquent, les entreprises doivent favoriser le développement communautaire et maintenir de bonnes relations avec les communautés pour atteindre leurs objectifs. Certaines études montrent comment des communautés ont obligé des entreprises à arrêter leurs opérations en raison de leurs impacts négatifs, mais dans des pays (...) considérés par Transparency International comme ayant un niveau élevé de corruption, tel le Mexique, ces actions collectives ne sont pas totalement efficaces. Sur la base de sources secondaires, cet article expose les incohérences et les limitations qui existent dans le contexte de l’exploitation minière mexicaine, où les entreprises qui ne disposent pas de SLO obtiennent des résultats différents en fonction de leur proximité avec des groupes politiques et économiques. La présente recherche contribue à l’étude de la SLO dans les pays ayant un niveau élevé de corruption et un système socioéconomique caractérisé par la collusion entre les pratiques des secteurs public et privé. El autor argumenta que el elemento clave que define la existencia de un sistema político democrático es el hecho que la Constitución y las leyes sean el producto de la voluntad mayoritaria del pueblo, expresada en asambleas que lo representen a través de un voto que tenga realmente el mismo valor. Sostiene que para el Chile actual es claro que la Constitución no es el producto de la voluntad mayoritaria del pueblo pues fue impuesta por la dictadura en un plebiscito (...) espurio, y sus contenidos configuran un régimen autoritario. El autor junto con desarrollar estas ideas cuestiona cómo los gobiernos concertacionistas fueron dando por realizada la transición a la democracia. (shrink)

En directa vinculación con los movimientos artísticos de finales de siglo XVIII y comienzos del XIX, los hermanos Schlegel se separan de la larga tradición, de procedencia aristotélica, en que la acción creadora es reducida al acto mimético, proponiendo para ello un concepto común de arte que ya no separa a la poética de la plástica, iniciando así, según (...) el autor, la moderna crítica de arte. Este artículo expone y discute los principales problemas referidos al status de la Filosofía del espíritu como parte componente del sistema, por un lado, y como realización de la historicidad, por el otro. Dicha polémica exige revisar el estado de la producción hegeliana y sus ediciones, pues se advierte una diferencia textual que, sin duda, influye en la determinación sistemática de la filosofía de Hegel.

Resumen: El artículo busca una comprensión de los trabajos académicos acerca de filosofía de la historia desarrollados por Hegel y Friedrich Schlegel a partir del análisis de lo que considera una disputa constante entre idealismo y romanticismo, en la que se encuentran involucradas tanto la idea de una exposición sistemática inherente a la filosofía en tanto ciencia, como así también el recurso retórico a la ironía y el enfrentamiento confesional de los cristianismos posteriores a la Reforma y su concepto de (...) historia universal.: The article aims to reach an understanding of the scholarly work developed by Hegel and Friedrich Schlegel concerning the Philosophy of History, from the analysis of what is considered as a constant dispute between idealism and romanticism, in which the ideas of a systematic exposition, inherent to philosophy as science, as well as the rhetorical resort to irony and the confessional confrontation of Christianities following the Reformation and its universal history.
