Taking a set of central issues from ancient Greek medicine and biology, this book studies firstly, the interaction between scientific theorising and folklore or popular assumptions; secondly, the ideological character of scientific inquiry. Topics of interest in the philosphy and sociology of science illuminated here include the relationship between primitive thought and early science, the roles of the consensus on the scientific community, tradition and the authority of the written text, in the development of science.

This paper points out the vagueness and methodological naivete of current anti-normative studies of science. The Tversky-Kahneman paradigm catalogues common 'mistakes' in statistical reasoning, but fails to describe and explain people's embarrassment when these 'mistakes' are pointed out to them. A comprehensive naturalistic account of science should not limit itself to the quick-and-dirty aspects of scientific practice. The semantic view of theories is faulted for failing to account for the processes of prediction and explanation. In antiquity, works of culture, created by the Greek-Roman people, passed centuries, the test of centuries and reached our era. Many samples of European literature, born in the Modern Age, have long been forgotten, and unique works, such as the Homeric epic and the tragedies of Sophocles, have been translated again and again, always bringing spiritual energy and aesthetic pleasure to readers’ hearts. Homer was unique among the poets of that time, and indeed the supposed author of the Iliad and (...) the Odyssey must undoubtedly be one of the world's greatest literary artists. The two epics formed the basis of Greek education and culture throughout the classical era and laid the foundation of human education up until the time of the Roman Empire and the spread of Christianity so this is proof that Homer is also one of the most influential authors in the broadest sense. The article reveals the ideological and artistic features of the ancient Greek poet Homer’s poems “Iliad” and “Odyssey”. The authors of this article analyze the thematic, ideological, and artistic features of these epic works. The methodological basis of the work is the principle of historicism, which contributes to the objective study and evaluation of literary phenomena in the process of evolutionary development. This study deals basically with a critique of ideological and policy-oriented approaches in area studies, and problems of political interventions and ideological inclinations in the Middle Eastern studies. Politics and ideology not only makes the area more complex to understand, since they aim to meet the needs of the governments, but also prevents the academic studies to develop independently. The study aims at putting forth a historical analysis required both to take the issues of the Middle (...) East studies within their unique socio-economic settings, and to regard them from the historical point of view. Central for the paper is to propose bases for the development of area studies depending on the interactions of regional histories and politics with each other. The study argues that Middle East studies in particular and area studies in general would produce reasonable knowledge and add up to the literature within a working relationship with world history, and in a comparative and multi-dimensional manner. The modern concept of ideology was established by the liberal politician and philosopher Destutt de Tracy, with the objective of creating an all-embracing and general science of ideas, which followed the sensualist and empiricist trend initiated by Locke that culminated in the positivism of Comte. Natural selection and immunity are two key concepts in the history of biology that were strongly based on the Malthusian concept of struggle for existence. This concept wrongly assumed that population grew faster than the (...) means of existence. This “natural” law contained implicitly the idea that the poor and least gifted would not survive. This idea led to the progressive development of the concept of natural selection, whose definitive version was given by Darwin. Mechnikov took the concepts of struggle for existence and natural selection and conceived infectious diseases as a struggle between a host and its invader, the so-called phagocytosis theory. This theory created the necessity to possess mechanisms to discriminate between the own and the foreign, and led to the conception of the immune self. These concepts were not developed from ideas coming from perceptions or sensations, but from ideas coming from their values: individual interest, inevitable inequality, property, utility and profit. Values are ideals that constitute an ideological matrix which exerts a numinous activity and influence the development of our future actions. In consequence, science and its practice cannot avoid and ignore the values that drive them and impulse them towards certain directions. (shrink)

Post-communist East-Central Europe is witnessing a clash of memories focused on its recent past. Whereas Western memory is constructed around the “politics of regret” and responsibility-assumption vis-à-vis the Holocaust, Eastern memory focuses to a large extent on responsibility-attribution for the trauma of communist rule. These are comparable traumatic experiences, but due to different “cognitive mapping” and different mnemonic social frameworks, Eastern memory has produced a post-mnemonic framework that allows for a creeping justification of interwar Radical Right ideologies; for the transmogrification (...) some of their standard-bearers into anti-communist heroes and martyrs; and the obfuscation World War II history. Government officials claim open data can improve internal and external communication and collaboration. These promises hinge on “data intermediaries”: extra-institutional actors that obtain, use, and translate data for the public. However, we know little about why these individuals might regard open data as a site of civic participation. In response, we draw on Ilana Gershon to conceptualize culturally situated and socially constructed perspectives on data, or “data ideologies.” This study employs mixed methodologies to examine why members of the public hold (...) particular data ideologies and how they vary. In late 2015 the authors engaged the public through a commission in a diverse city of approximately 500,000. Qualitative data was collected from three public focus groups with residents. Simultaneously, we obtained quantitative data from surveys. Participants’ data ideologies varied based on how they perceived data to be useful for collaboration, tasks, and translations. Bucking the “geek” stereotype, only a minority of those surveyed were professional software developers or engineers. Although only a nascent movement, we argue open data intermediaries have important roles to play in a new political landscape. (shrink)

This study explores society's attitudes towards medicine, as reflected in the language of Patient Information Leaflets, and attempts to explicate how they have changed over the last century. For this purpose, Halliday's transitivity model is employed as a method of discourse analysis in order to carry out a systematic, comparative investigation of the language of early 20th-century PILs and that of their modern equivalents. The study demonstrates how the transitivity choices in the respective samples cumulatively realize a particular `world-view', and (...) considers the implications this has for the construal of the wider social/cultural context and the projection of particular ideologies. 『회남자』 통치철학에 대한 일반적 평가는 긍정적이다. 백성들을 위하는 통치라는 점에서 민본주의를 주장하는 유가와 부합하는 통치로 평가되기도 한다. 그러나 『회남자』의 통치를 대표하는 무위감화통치는 수동적으로 반응하기만 하는 피치자를 상정하는 듯하고, 이런 추정에 근거해서 『회남자』통치를 가부장주의라고 비판하는 해석이 제안된 바 있다. 본고에서는 『회남자』 통치가 가부장적이라는 해석의 문제점을 지적하고, 오히려 피치자의 자발성을 중시하는 통치라고 주장한다. 『회남자』의 법치는 본성에 근거한 통치라고 할 수 있다. 호오好惡는 『회남자』 본성의 중요한 특성 중 하나다. 법가에서는 자연스러운 호오가 단순히 상벌의 근거였으나, 『회남자』의 저자들은 그것을 예제의 근거로 간주했다. 게다가 지나친 예제를 (...) 거부했고, 예제의 근거를 본성에 새겨 넣으려는 시도에도 반대했다. 따라서 『회남자』의 통치는 가부장적인 일방적 통치이기는커녕, 유가통치보다도 더욱 자발성을 허용하는 통치라고 평가할 수 있다. Forsyth’s (1980) Ethics Position Questionnaire and Hunt et al.’s (1989) Corporate Ethical Value Questionnaire are used to examine the ethical ideologies of senior managers from organizations listed in the Australian Stock Exchange. The results indicate how corporate ethical values, religion, gender, and age are related to the idealism and relativism of senior Australian managers. After discussing the results, limitations of the study are offered. Finally, managerial implications are provided and recommendations for future research are given.

This paper recounts my encounter with the ideological context of Hobbes’s system as a graduate student in political theory through the teaching and scholarship of Professor Johann Sommerville. This encounter made me recognize that political theorists should study not only systems of political philosophy but also their ideological contexts, whose primary components are not “languages” but ideas and arguments deployed in debates concerning issues of political legitimacy of a particular time. Specifically, I realized that incorporating ideological contexts into the study (...) of political theory could render the quest for legitimate political orders in different ages and cultures accessible to modern readers of diverse backgrounds, enable a more accurate grasp of the originality of a philosophical system, and uncover new resources for political theorizing. Another critical analysis of the intellectual antecedents or the logical structure of Thorstein Veblen's thought is hardly needed. Since his death—iconoclasm's reward is often posthumous—a goodly number of such studies has appeared. I do not intend to add to the pile, but rather to analyze Veblen's work as representative of the response of “intellectuals” to specific ideologies and to ideology in general. This is a subject that has not received the direct attention it deserves, and, to my knowledge, (...) Veblen has never been studied in this connection.By “ideology” I mean a system of beliefs that presents value-judgments as empirical truths in order to justify, with or without conscious intent, a particular socio-economic group's claim to material and prestigial rewards. The valuejudgments in an ideology fall into two categories: those which have to do with a hero-subject, individual or group, whom the ideologue believes worthy of the rewards, and those which concern a villain-subject, individual or group, whom the ideologue believes unworthy. To win general acceptance of these valuejudgments an ideology also contains a set of reality-statements. These, in purporting to tell the “truth” about the world—about men, nature, God—serve to objectify, and thus justify, the choice of the hero and villain-subjects. (shrink)

이 논문은 유가(儒家)의 자연법사상(自然法思想)이 대한민국의 최고 기본법이자 최고 규범인 헌법(憲法)에 어떠한 내용과 의미로 전승되어 오고 있으며, 이러한 유가사상이 오늘날에 있어 어떠한 과제를 우리에게 제시하고 있는 것인지를 살펴보기 위한 글이다. 유가사상 특히 민본(民本), 예치(禮治), 덕치(德治) 및 친친주의(親親主義)로 대표되는 선진유가의 자연법사상이 오늘날에 있어서는 그 영향력이 현저히 감소하였으나, 여전히 우리 민족의 의식 속에 하나의 윤리규범 내지 미풍양속으로서의 위치를 차지하고 있으며, 대한민국 현행 법령에 있어서도 다양한 형태로 전승되어 오고 있어, 실제 규범으로서의 법집행력도 일정 부분 가지고 있다. 즉 대한민국의 최고 기본법인 헌법을 위시하여 민법을 비롯한 (...) 민사법령 그리고 형법을 비롯한 형사법령에 유가 법사상을 반영한 입법 규정들이 산재해 있으며, 법원 및 헌법재판소의 판례나 결정 등을 통해 유가사상이 재해석되어 전승되어 오고 있는 것이다. 유가의 법사상은 헌법 명문규정으로는 헌법 전문(前文)과 본문(本文) 제9조 등에 규정된 ‘전통(傳統)’, ‘전통문화(傳統文化)’의 내포개념으로 전승되어 오는 한편, 헌법재판소의 위헌법률제청사건 및 위헌소원사건 등에 대한 결정을 통하여 재해석되어 전승되고 있다. 헌법재판소의 재해석을 통한 전승은 크게 두 가지로 나누어 볼 수 있는데, 하나는 유가의 사상 내지 윤리와 관련된 결정이며, 다른 하나는 전통문화와 관련된 결정이다. 지난 20여 년 간 헌법재판소의 판례 및 결정문을 면밀히 분석하여 검토하는 작업을 통해, 헌법재판소는 우리 사회가 유교적 전통을 받아들이고 체화(體化)시켜 일정 부분 우리의 고유한 의식으로 남아 있음을 인정하는 일관된 입장을 유지하고 있으며, 특히 가정의 영역에서는 법률보다 전통적 윤리의 역할을 더 강조하는 입장을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 유가 사상 내지 도덕관념에 터 잡은 전통문화가 어떠한 기준 하에서 우리의 고유한 전통의식 내지 도덕규범으로서 헌법적 정당성(正當性)을 갖는지 여부에 대한 중요한 기준 내지 척도를 도출해 낼 수 있었다. 헌법재판소는 헌법상 전통문화 내지 윤리로서 정당성을 인정받기 위해서는 단순히 전통문화라는 역사적 사실과 이를 계승하는 것만으로는 부족하며, 이 시대의 사회⋅경제적 기반에 맞아야 한다는 ‘시대적합성(時代適合性)’과 오늘날에 있어서도 보편타당한 전통윤리 내지는 도덕관념이어야 한다는 ‘현재적 보편타당성(現在的 普遍妥當性)’을 양대 기준으로 천명하고 있다. 또한 이러한 ‘시대적합성’과 ‘현재적 보편타당성’은 ‘오늘날의 의미로 재해석되어 포착된 것’이어야 하며, 이를 위한 가장 중요한 척도로서 ‘헌법이념(憲法理念)과 헌법의 가치질서(價値秩序)’ 및 ‘인류(人類)의 보편가치(普遍價値), 정의(正義)와 인도정신(人道精神)’을 들고 있다. 여기서 우리는 헌법상 정당성을 가지는 전통문화의 주요한 축으로서의 유가사상 내지 유가 자연법사상의 ‘시대적합성’과 ‘현재적 보편타당성’을 확보하고 ‘헌법이념과 헌법의 가치질서’ 및 ‘인류의 보편가치, 정의와 인도정신’이라는 척도를 가지고 유가 사상을 ‘오늘날의 의미로 재해석하여 포착’하여야 한다는 새로운 과제와 임무를 부여받게 된다. 이는 현재 세계적으로 활발히 논의되고 있는 “새로운 보편윤리(the Universal Ethics)의 모색”이라는 지성사적 작업과도 연결하여 논의를 진행해볼 수 있다는 점에서 오늘날 우리에게 매우 중요한 시사를 하고 있다. 또한 현재 정치권 등에서 활발히 거론되고 있는 헌법 개정 문제와 관련하여 유가 자연법사상 중 보편적 윤리 내지 가치를 발굴하여 이를 헌법 개정안에 반영시켜 나갈 것인지 여부에 대하여도 진지하고도 폭넓은 관심과 연구가 시급히 전개되어야 할 것이라고 생각한다. A controversial question in critical discourse analysis has been whether and how discourse may manifest or at least implicate the ideologies of the discourse participants. This question should be seen in the context of the long history of uneasiness concerning whether ideology can be an object of inquiry for science, whose stance of authority and objectivity implies a claim to be freed of all ideology. This claim has been quite emphatic in formalist linguistics, which has even proposed to (...) investigate human language in isolation from human society. By restoring the focus upon discourse in society, critical discourse analysis offers an occasion to subject ideology to new methods of investigation, and to formulate an explicit ideology for the field itself. As a new source of evidence, large corpus data can be collated for expressions which are presumed to undergo ideological contestation, such as `liberal' and `liberalism', which are examined here in data from the UK, the US, and South Africa. Interest in esoteric and mystical aspects of Islam in present-day Russia and its Soviet and tsarist predecessors is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon. The article starts with a critical discussion of Aleksandr Dugin’s interpretations of Sufism in his ambitious intellectual project Noomachia: Wars of the Intellect [and] Civilizations of Borderlands. The author then compares Dugin’s conceptualizations of Sufism with those of several Russian writers who lived in the second half of the nineteenth century and whose portrayal of Sufism and its (...) followers is similar to Dugin’s in some important respects. These ideologically driven constructions of Sufism stand in sharp contrast to the self-consciously objective scholarly ones that emerged in the late nineteenth/early twentieth century within the Russian academic and teaching institutions specializing in Eastern religions, languages, and cultures. The author argues that Russian academic conceptualizations of Sufism mirrored those of the fin-de-siècle German Islamology and then proceeds to examine the profound changes in Russian attitudes to Sufism, and Islam generally, after the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 and the rise of the Soviet state that based its legitimacy on the Marxist-Leninist concept of history with its pervasive atheism, materialism, and emphasis on class struggle. It shaped Soviet-era academic and nonacademic approaches to Sufism until the mid-1980s, when Soviet scholars began to question the Marxist-Leninist certainties of the previous six decades. (shrink)

본 연구는 ‘중국불교사상에 나타난 佛性의 변천과 여래장적 해석-『화엄경』 「여래출현품」과 「보왕여래성기품」을 중심으로-’에 대하여 살펴본 글이다. 그 결과 여래장 개념의 변천사는 ‘여래장→불성→여래성기→여래출현’순으로 점차 변화되었음을 경전을 통해 확인할 수 있었다. 여래장의 개념의 기원은 초기경전인 『증일아함경』중에서 찾아볼 수 있었는데, 여기서 언급된 용어는 ‘如來藏’이라는 것이다. 『증일아함경』 이후에는 이 용어는 더 이상 초기경전에서는 찾아볼 수 없었다. 그러나 부파불교이후 초기 대승경전의 출현과 발전에 따라 ‘여래장’이란 용어가 언급되고 있는데, 그 대표적인 경전으로는 『大方廣如來藏經』, 『대방등여래장경』과 『보성론』, 『승만경』이나 『대반열반경』, 『불성론』 등의 여래장계통 경전과 『화엄경』 등이다. 이들 경전 중에서 구체적으로 ‘여래장’이라는 의미를 (...) 설명하고 있는 경전은 『대방등여래장경』과 『대방광여래장경』이다. 그리고 ‘불성’이라는 용어가 나타난 최초의 경전은 『앙굴마라경』으로 보인다. 여기서 구체적으로 ‘불성’이라는 개념을 언급하고 있고, 이후 『대열반경』에서도 모든 중생에게 佛性이 있다고 설하고 있다는 것을 시작으로 차츰 여래장이라는 용어가 불성으로 변화되었다는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 이후 중국의 혜원스님(523∼592)은 佛性을 『대승의장』에서 ‘性’을 ‘佛性 · 如來性 · 如來藏性’으로 풀이한 반면, 중국화엄의 제1조인 두순스님과 제2조 지엄스님은 불도실천의 입문관으로서 불성관과 여래장관으로 여래장사상을 이해하고 있다. 특히 지엄스님은 이 마음을 청정한 진심으로 해석하고 동시에 이를 여래장 · 불성의 본성으로 보고 있는데, 이것은 『화엄경』유심사상의 여래장적 해석이라 할 수 있어 주목된다. 그리고 제3조인 법장스님도 ‘여래장연기’로 받아들이고 있다. 『화엄경』에는 여래장설이 직접적으로 설해지진 않으나, 중국의 『화엄경』의 주석가들은 자신이 이미 알고 있던 여래장사상을 바탕으로 하여 『화엄경』을 풀이하고 있다는 것을 알 수 있다.BR 본 연구의 주 텍스트 화엄대경의 경우, 구역60권본 『화엄경』 「여래보왕성기품」에서는 ‘여래성기’로 호칭되었다. 이에 비해 신역 80권본의 「여래출현품」은 ‘여래출현’의 용어로 사용되었으나, 여래장과 불성 그리고 여래성기와 여래출현은 둘 다 如來藏的의미로써 동일하다. 왜냐하면 『화엄경』에 깃들여있는 여래지 · 법신 등의 다양한 여래장적 변용의 교설은 일체중생의 성불에 대한 강력한 의지를 포함한 중국화엄교학의 특징이기 때문이다. 따라서 이러한 佛性에 대한 여래장적 해석을 「보왕여래성기품」과 「여래출현품」에서 다양한 비유로써 發現하고자 하는 근본大義는 모든 악을 저지르지 말고 모든 선을 행하여 스스로 그 마음을 깨끗이 해야 한다는 데 있다. 청정한 三業은 우리 내면에 숨어있던 佛性의 찬란한 광명을 온전히 드러낼 수 있다는 희망의 메시지를 우리에게 던져주고 있다. This article investigates the ideologisation of Arab media discourse and takes as a case in point the ideological construction of the Gulf crisis in the headlines of Al Arabiya English and Al Jazeera English. A corpus of 515 headlines produced between May and June 2017 is examined using an interdisciplinary critical discourse analytic framework. Analysis is conducted at two levels: a textual level concerned with the analysis of the semantic and syntactic aspects of headlines and a socio-cognitive level informed by (...) insights from Van Dijk’s ideological square concept and his mental model theory and Laclau and Mouffe’s discourse theory. Findings indicate that both platforms are ideologically biased toward the political perspectives of their host states, although in a lesser degree in Al Jazeera English, and also reveal the various discursive strategies used to construct subjective mental models and reference frames to guide readers understanding of the crisis. Background Although research has established that the work environment significantly shapes nurses’ ethical behavior, it’s less clear whether decent work could influence ethical ideologies of nurses. Aim To investigate the decent work conditions and ethical ideologies of nurses, and to analyze whether decent work influences their ethical ideologies. Methods A multicenter cross-sectional survey was conducted among 203 nurses working in three tertiary governmental hospitals across two cities in Egypt. We utilized the Scale of Decent Work, which consists of 15 items (...) distributed across five dimensions, to assess the level of decent work conditions. Additionally, the Ethics Position Questionnaire, containing 20 items divided into two categories—idealism and relativism—was used to evaluate the ethical ideologies of nurses. Pearson correlation and linear regression analyses were applied to analyze the data. Ethical considerations Ethical approval from the ethics committee, institutional permission, and informed consent from the participants were obtained for data collection. Results The findings indicated that the levels of decent work conditions were moderate, while the ethical ideologies of nurses were relatively high. Stepwise multiple linear regression analyses revealed that the idealism of nurses was significantly predicted by two dimensions of decent work—organizational values, and hours allowing for free time and rest—along with the overall decent work score. Meanwhile, the relativism of nurses was significantly predicted by the presence of physically and interpersonally safe working conditions. Conclusions Nurses experiencing decent work conditions characterized by high organizational values and adequate hours for free time and rest are more inclined to adopt idealistic ethical ideology. Meanwhile, those experiencing physically and interpersonally safe working conditions tend to embrace relativistic ethical ideology. Implications for clinical practice Identifying the relationship between decent work conditions and the ethical ideologies of nurses can assist hospital administrators in fostering work conditions that promote appropriate ethical ideologies among nurses. What is the point of ideology critique? Prominent Anglo-American philosophers recently proposed novel arguments for the view that ideology critique is moral critique, and ideologies are flawed insofar as they contribute to injustice or oppression. We criticize that view and make the case for an alternative and more empirically-oriented approach, grounded in epistemic rather than moral commitments. We make two related claims: (i) ideology critique can debunk beliefs and practices by uncovering how, empirically, they are produced by (...) self-justifying power, and (ii) the self-justification of power should be understood as an epistemic rather than moral flaw. Drawing on the recent realist revival in political theory, we argue that this genealogical approach has more radical potential, despite being more parsimonious than morality-based approaches. We demonstrate the relative advantages of our view by discussing the results of empirical studies on the contemporary phenomenon of neopatriarchy in the Middle East and North Africa. (shrink)

본 논고는 다산 정약용(茶山 丁若鏞)이 하곡(霞谷) 후학인 원교 이광사(圓嶠 李匡師)의 사단(四端)및 기질론(氣質論)에 적극적으로 동조한 것과 하곡과 다산의 사단칠정론(四端七情論)이 지니는 공통적 이해에 근거하여, 하곡학(霞谷學)과 다산학(茶山學)의 상호 연계성을 시론적으로 검토한 것이다. 이들의 공통된 이해는 사덕⋅사단(四德⋅四端)의 개념규정 문제와 사단칠정(四端七情)의 선⋅불선 문제로 나누어 살펴볼 수 있다. 먼저 사덕⋅사단에 대해서 하곡과 다산은 모두 ‘단(端)’을 곧 ‘시(始)’로 보고, 사단은 곧 본원의 시작점이며 사덕은 행사(行事)가 이루어지고 난 뒤 사단이 확충된 결과라고 하였다. 이들은 성(性)을 고정적이고 형이상적인 실체로 보는 것을 부정했다. 사단칠정의 선⋅불선 문제에 대해서도 하곡과 다산의 결론은 동일하다. (...) 그것은 사단도 불선할 수 있고 칠정도 선할 수 있으며, 불선의 원인이 기질에 의한 것은 아니고 매사 천리와 인위의 구분이 중요하다는 것이다. 그러나 선⋅불선의 과정을 설명하는 부분은 인성에 대한 규정차로 인한 상이점이 존재한다. 하곡은 불선의 상태가 성이나 양지의 가려짐이며, 사단의 확충은 도덕 판단과 행위 속에서 항상 志에 따르는 것이 관건이라고 보았다. 반면 다산은 선⋅불선은 자주권(自主權)의 선택이며 천리(天理)의 공(公)을 따르는가 인욕(人欲)의 사(私)를 따르는가에 달려있다. 다산의 사단칠정론은 일본고학파의 견해보다 하곡의 견해와 친연성을 지닌다. 하곡학과 다산학의 인성론이 지닌 사상적 연관성 논의는 향후 사상사 연구에서 좀더 면밀하게 고찰해야 할 과제이다.
